Et il advint, après qu'Alexandre, fils de Philippe, le Macédonien, issu du pays de Kittim, eut défait Darius, roi des Perses et des Mèdes, qu'il régna à sa place, lui le premier sur la Grèce.
And it happened, after that Alexander son of Philip, the Macedonian, who came out of the land of Chettiim, had smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes, that he reigned in his stead, the first over Greece,
Il entreprit de nombreuses guerres, s'empara de maintes forteresses et mit à mort les rois de la terre.
And made many wars, and won many strong holds, and slew the kings of the earth,
Il s'avança jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre et pilla les dépouilles de nations nombreuses, de sorte que la terre se tut devant lui ; alors son cœur s'exalta et s'enorgueillit.
And went through to the ends of the earth, and took spoils of many nations, insomuch that the earth was quiet before him; whereupon he was exalted and his heart was lifted up.
Il rassembla une armée puissante et domina sur des contrées, des nations et des rois, qui devinrent ses tributaires.
And he gathered a mighty strong host and ruled over countries, and nations, and kings, who became tributaries unto him.
Après cela, il tomba malade et sentit qu'il allait mourir.
And after these things he fell sick, and perceived that he should die.
C'est pourquoi il appela ses serviteurs, les plus illustres qui avaient été élevés avec lui dès sa jeunesse, et partagea entre eux son royaume, de son vivant même.
Wherefore he called his servants, such as were honourable, and had been brought up with him from his youth, and parted his kingdom among them, while he was yet alive.
Alexandre régna douze ans, puis il mourut.
So Alexander reigned twelves years, and then died.
Ses serviteurs prirent le pouvoir, chacun dans son domaine.
And his servants bare rule every one in his place.
Après sa mort, ils ceignirent tous le diadème, et leurs fils après eux pendant de longues années ; et les maux se multiplièrent sur la terre.
And after his death they all put crowns upon themselves; so did their sons after them many years: and evils were multiplied in the earth.
De leur descendance sortit une racine de péché, Antiochus Épiphane, fils du roi Antiochus, qui avait été otage à Rome ; il commença à régner la cent trente-septième année du royaume des Grecs.
And there came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, son of Antiochus the king, who had been an hostage at Rome, and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.
En ces jours-là, il sortit d'Israël des fils pervers qui séduisirent beaucoup de gens, disant : Allons, et faisons alliance avec les nations qui nous entourent, car depuis que nous nous sommes séparés d'elles, bien des malheurs nous sont arrivés.
In those days went there out of Israel wicked men, who persuaded many, saying, Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us: for since we departed from them we have had much sorrow.
Ce discours leur parut bon.
So this device pleased them well.
Quelques-uns parmi le peuple s'empressèrent d'aller trouver le roi, qui leur donna l'autorisation de suivre les coutumes des nations.
Then certain of the people were so forward herein, that they went to the king, who gave them licence to do after the ordinances of the heathen:
Ils bâtirent alors un gymnase à Jérusalem, selon l'usage des nations.
Whereupon they built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen:
Ils se firent des prépuces, abandonnèrent l'alliance sainte, s'unirent aux nations et se vendirent pour faire le mal.
And made themselves uncircumcised, and forsook the holy covenant, and joined themselves to the heathen, and were sold to do mischief.
Lorsque le royaume fut affermi devant Antiochus, he conçut le dessein de régner sur l'Égypte, afin de dominer sur deux royaumes.
Now when the kingdom was established before Antiochus, he thought to reign over Egypt that he might have the dominion of two realms.
Il entra en Égypte avec une multitude immense, avec des chars, des éléphants, des cavaliers et une grande flotte.
Wherefore he entered into Egypt with a great multitude, with chariots, and elephants, and horsemen, and a great navy,
Il fit la guerre à Ptolémée, roi d'Égypte ; Ptolémée fut effrayé devant lui et s'enfuit, et beaucoup tombèrent frappés à mort.
And made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt: but Ptolemee was afraid of him, and fled; and many were wounded to death.
Ils s'emparèrent des villes fortes du pays d'Égypte, et Antiochus en pilla les dépouilles.
Thus they got the strong cities in the land of Egypt and he took the spoils thereof.
Après avoir frappé l'Égypte, Antiochus s'en retourna la cent quarante-troisième année, et il monta contre Israël et contre Jérusalem avec une multitude immense.
And after that Antiochus had smitten Egypt, he returned again in the hundred forty and third year, and went up against Israel and Jerusalem with a great multitude,
Il entra avec orgueil dans le sanctuaire, enleva l'autel d'or, le chandelier de la lumière et tous ses ustensiles,
And entered proudly into the sanctuary, and took away the golden altar, and the candlestick of light, and all the vessels thereof,
la table de proposition, les vases à libations, les coupes, les encensoirs d'or, le voile, les couronnes et les ornements d'or qui décoraient la façade du temple, et il dépouilla tout.
And the table of the shewbread, and the pouring vessels, and the vials. and the censers of gold, and the veil, and the crown, and the golden ornaments that were before the temple, all which he pulled off.
Il prit l'argent, l'or, les vases précieux, et s'empara des trésors cachés qu'il trouva.
He took also the silver and the gold, and the precious vessels: also he took the hidden treasures which he found.
Ayant tout enlevé, il s'en alla dans son pays, après avoir fait un grand carnage et proféré des paroles pleines d'arrogance.
And when he had taken all away, he went into his own land, having made a great massacre, and spoken very proudly.
Il y eut alors un grand deuil en Israël, dans tous les lieux où ils habitaient.
Therefore there was a great mourning in Israel, in every place where they were;
Les chefs et les anciens gémirent, les jeunes filles et les jeunes gens perdirent leurs forces, et la beauté des femmes fut altérée.
So that the princes and elders mourned, the virgins and young men were made feeble, and the beauty of women was changed.
Tout nouveau marié entonna une complainte, et celle qui siégeait dans la chambre nuptiale était dans la tristesse.
Every bridegroom took up lamentation, and she that sat in the marriage chamber was in heaviness,
La terre trembla pour ses habitants, et toute la maison de Jacob fut couverte de honte.
The land also was moved for the inhabitants thereof, and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion.
Deux ans après, le roi envoya un commissaire aux tributs dans les villes de Juda ; il vint à Jérusalem avec une multitude immense.
And after two years fully expired the king sent his chief collector of tribute unto the cities of Juda, who came unto Jerusalem with a great multitude,
Il leur adressa des paroles de paix avec ruse, et ils le crurent ; mais il se jeta soudain sur la ville, lui porta un coup terrible et fit périr beaucoup de gens en Israël.
And spake peaceable words unto them, but all was deceit: for when they had given him credence, he fell suddenly upon the city, and smote it very sore, and destroyed much people of Israel.
Il pilla la ville, y mit le feu, et renversa les maisons et les murs d'alentour.
And when he had taken the spoils of the city, he set it on fire, and pulled down the houses and walls thereof on every side.
Ils emmenèrent captives les femmes et les enfants, et s'emparèrent du bétail.
But the women and children took they captive, and possessed the cattle.
Ils entourèrent la cité de David d'un mur grand et fort, avec des tours puissantes, et elle leur servit de citadelle.
Then builded they the city of David with a great and strong wall, and with mighty towers, and made it a strong hold for them.
Ils y placèrent une nation pécheresse, des hommes impies, qui s'y fortifièrent.
And they put therein a sinful nation, wicked men, and fortified themselves therein.
Ils y amassèrent des armes et des vivres, et y déposèrent les dépouilles qu'ils avaient recueillies à Jérusalem ; ils devinrent ainsi un piège redoutable.
They stored it also with armour and victuals, and when they had gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem, they laid them up there, and so they became a sore snare:
Ce fut un lieu d'embuscade contre le sanctuaire, et un adversaire maléfique pour Israël en tout temps.
For it was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary, and an evil adversary to Israel.
Ils répandirent le sang innocent autour du sanctuaire et souillèrent le lieu saint.
Thus they shed innocent blood on every side of the sanctuary, and defiled it:
À cause d'eux, les habitants de Jérusalem s'enfuirent ; la ville devint une demeure d'étrangers, elle devint étrangère à ceux qui y étaient nés, et ses enfants l'abandonnèrent.
Insomuch that the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled because of them: whereupon the city was made an habitation of strangers, and became strange to those that were born in her; and her own children left her.
Son sanctuaire fut désolé comme un désert, ses fêtes se changèrent en deuil, ses sabbats en opprobre, et son honneur en mépris.
Her sanctuary was laid waste like a wilderness, her feasts were turned into mourning, her sabbaths into reproach her honour into contempt.
Autant sa gloire avait été grande, autant son déshonneur s'accrut, et sa grandeur fut changée en deuil.
As had been her glory, so was her dishonour increased, and her excellency was turned into mourning.
Le roi Antiochus écrivit à tout son royaume, afin que tous ne formassent qu'un seul peuple,
Moreover king Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom, that all should be one people,
et que chacun abandonnât ses propres lois ; toutes les nations se conformèrent à l'ordre du roi.
And every one should leave his laws: so all the heathen agreed according to the commandment of the king.
Beaucoup d'Israélites acceptèrent son culte, sacrifièrent aux idoles et profanèrent le sabbat.
Yea, many also of the Israelites consented to his religion, and sacrificed unto idols, and profaned the sabbath.
Le roi envoya par des messagers, à Jérusalem et aux villes de Juda, des lettres leur ordonnant de suivre des lois étrangères au pays,
For the king had sent letters by messengers unto Jerusalem and the cities of Juda that they should follow the strange laws of the land,
d'interdire les holocaustes, les sacrifices et les libations dans le temple, de profaner les sabbats et les fêtes,
And forbid burnt offerings, and sacrifice, and drink offerings, in the temple; and that they should profane the sabbaths and festival days:
de souiller le sanctuaire et les saints,
And pollute the sanctuary and holy people:
d'élever des autels, des bois sacrés et des temples d'idoles, d'immoler des porcs et des bêtes impures,
Set up altars, and groves, and chapels of idols, and sacrifice swine’s flesh, and unclean beasts:
de laisser leurs fils incirconcis, et de souiller leurs âmes par toutes sortes d'impuretés et de profanations,
That they should also leave their children uncircumcised, and make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and profanation:
afin qu'ils oubliassent la loi et changeassent toutes les ordonnances.
To the end they might forget the law, and change all the ordinances.
Quiconque n'agirait pas selon l'ordre du roi devait être mis à mort.
And whosoever would not do according to the commandment of the king, he said, he should die.
Il écrivit dans les mêmes termes à tout son royaume, établit des inspecteurs sur tout le peuple, et ordonna aux villes de Juda de sacrifier, ville par ville.
In the selfsame manner wrote he to his whole kingdom, and appointed overseers over all the people, commanding the cities of Juda to sacrifice, city by city.
Beaucoup de gens parmi le peuple se joignirent à eux, tous ceux qui abandonnaient la loi ; ils commirent le mal dans le pays,
Then many of the people were gathered unto them, to wit every one that forsook the law; and so they committed evils in the land;
et forcèrent Israël à se cacher dans des lieux de refuge, partout où ils pouvaient trouver un abri.
And drove the Israelites into secret places, even wheresoever they could flee for succour.
Le quinzième jour du mois de Kisleu, la cent quarante-cinquième année, ils érigèrent l'abomination de la désolation sur l'autel, et ils bâtirent des autels pour les idoles dans toutes les villes de Juda, aux alentours.
Now the fifteenth day of the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and fifth year, they set up the abomination of desolation upon the altar, and builded idol altars throughout the cities of Juda on every side;
On brûlait de l'encens aux portes des maisons et dans les rues.
And burnt incense at the doors of their houses, and in the streets.
Ils déchirèrent les livres de la loi qu'ils trouvèrent et les jetèrent au feu.
And when they had rent in pieces the books of the law which they found, they burnt them with fire.
Celui chez qui l'on trouvait un livre de l'alliance, ou quiconque observait la loi, était mis à mort selon l'édit du roi.
And whosoever was found with any the book of the testament, or if any committed to the law, the king’s commandment was, that they should put him to death.
C'est ainsi qu'ils usaient de leur autorité contre les Israélites, chaque mois, envers ceux qui étaient découverts dans les villes.
Thus did they by their authority unto the Israelites every month, to as many as were found in the cities.
Le vingt-cinquième jour du mois, ils sacrifiaient sur l'autel des idoles qui avait été élevé sur l'autel de Dieu.
Now the five and twentieth day of the month they did sacrifice upon the idol altar, which was upon the altar of God.
Conformément à l'édit, ils mirent à mort les femmes qui avaient fait circoncire leurs enfants.
At which time according to the commandment they put to death certain women, that had caused their children to be circumcised.
Ils suspendirent les nourrissons à leurs cous, pillèrent leurs maisons et tuèrent ceux qui avaient pratiqué la circoncision.
And they hanged the infants about their necks, and rifled their houses, and slew them that had circumcised them.
Cependant, beaucoup en Israël restèrent fermes et résolus en eux-mêmes à ne rien manger d'impur.
Howbeit many in Israel were fully resolved and confirmed in themselves not to eat any unclean thing.
Ils préférèrent mourir plutôt que de se souiller par des aliments et de profaner l'alliance sainte ; et ils moururent.
Wherefore the rather to die, that they might not be defiled with meats, and that they might not profane the holy covenant: so then they died.
Une très grande colère pesa sur Israël.
And there was very great wrath upon Israel.
En ces jours-là, s'éleva Mattathias, fils de Jean, fils de Siméon, prêtre de la lignée de Joarib, de Jérusalem, et il s'établit à Modin.
In those days arose Mattathias the son of John, the son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem, and dwelt in Modin.
Il avait cinq fils : Jean, surnommé Gaddi,
And he had five sons, Joannan, called Caddis:
Simon, surnommé Thassi,
Simon; called Thassi:
Judas, appelé Macchabée,
Judas, who was called Maccabeus:
Éléazar, surnommé Avaran, et Jonathan, surnommé Apphus.
Eleazar, called Avaran: and Jonathan, whose surname was Apphus.
Voyant les blasphèmes qui se commettaient en Juda et à Jérusalem,
And when he saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem,
il dit : Malheur à moi ! Pourquoi suis-je né pour voir la ruine de mon peuple et la ruine de la ville sainte, et pour y demeurer alors qu'elle est livrée aux mains des ennemis, et le sanctuaire aux mains des étrangers ?
He said, Woe is me! wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people, and of the holy city, and to dwell there, when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy, and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers?
Son temple est devenu comme un homme sans gloire.
Her temple is become as a man without glory.
Ses vases de gloire ont été emmenés captifs, ses nourrissons ont été égorgés dans les rues, et ses jeunes gens par l'épée de l'ennemi.
Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity, her infants are slain in the streets, her young men with the sword of the enemy.
Quelle nation n'a pas eu sa part de son royaume et ne s'est pas emparée de ses dépouilles ?
What nation hath not had a part in her kingdom and gotten of her spoils?
Tous ses ornements lui ont été enlevés ; de libre qu'elle était, elle est devenue esclave.
All her ornaments are taken away; of a free woman she is become a bondslave.
Et voici que notre sanctuaire, notre beauté et notre gloire, est dévasté, et les nations l'ont profané.
And, behold, our sanctuary, even our beauty and our glory, is laid waste, and the Gentiles have profaned it.
À quoi bon vivre encore ?
To what end therefore shall we live any longer?
Mattathias et ses fils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, se couvrirent de sacs et menèrent un grand deuil.
Then Mattathias and his sons rent their clothes, and put on sackcloth, and mourned very sore.
Cependant, les officiers du roi, chargés de contraindre à l'apostasie, arrivèrent dans la ville de Modin pour y faire sacrifier.
In the mean while the king’s officers, such as compelled the people to revolt, came into the city Modin, to make them sacrifice.
Beaucoup d'Israélites vinrent à eux, et Mattathias se rassembla avec ses fils.
And when many of Israel came unto them, Mattathias also and his sons came together.
Les officiers du roi prirent la parole et dirent à Mattathias : Tu es un chef, un homme illustre et grand dans cette ville, soutenu par des fils et des frères.
Then answered the king’s officers, and said to Mattathias on this wise, Thou art a ruler, and an honourable and great man in this city, and strengthened with sons and brethren:
Avance donc le premier et accomplis l'ordre du roi, comme l'ont fait toutes les nations, les hommes de Juda et ceux qui sont restés à Jérusalem ; ainsi, toi et ta maison, vous serez au nombre des amis du roi, et vous serez honorés, toi et tes fils, par de l'argent, de l'or et de nombreux présents.
Now therefore come thou first, and fulfil the king’s commandment, like as all the heathen have done, yea, and the men of Juda also, and such as remain at Jerusalem: so shalt thou and thy house be in the number of the king’s friends, and thou and thy children shall be honoured with silver and gold, and many rewards.
Mattathias répondit d'une voix forte : Même si toutes les nations qui sont sous la domination du roi lui obéissent, au point que chacun abandonne le culte de ses pères et se conforme à ses ordres,
Then Mattathias answered and spake with a loud voice, Though all the nations that are under the king’s dominion obey him, and fall away every one from the religion of their fathers, and give consent to his commandments:
moi, mes fils et mes frères, nous marcherons dans l'alliance de nos pères.
Yet will I and my sons and my brethren walk in the covenant of our fathers.
À Dieu ne plaise que nous abandonnions la loi et les ordonnances !
God forbid that we should forsake the law and the ordinances.
Nous n'écouterons pas les paroles du roi pour nous détourner de notre religion, ni à droite ni à gauche.
We will not hearken to the king’s words, to go from our religion, either on the right hand, or the left.
Lorsqu'il eut fini de prononcer ces paroles, un Juif s'avança, à la vue de tous, pour sacrifier sur l'autel de Modin, selon l'ordre du roi.
Now when he had left speaking these words, there came one of the Jews in the sight of all to sacrifice on the altar which was at Modin, according to the king’s commandment.
À cette vue, Mattathias fut enflammé de zèle et ses entrailles frémirent ; il laissa éclater une juste colère, courut et l'égorgea sur l'autel.
Which thing when Mattathias saw, he was inflamed with zeal, and his reins trembled, neither could he forbear to shew his anger according to judgment: wherefore he ran, and slew him upon the altar.
Il tua en même temps l'officier du roi qui contraignait au sacrifice, et il renversa l'autel.
Also the king’s commissioner, who compelled men to sacrifice, he killed at that time, and the altar he pulled down.
Il montra son zèle pour la loi, comme l'avait fait Phinées envers Zimri, fils de Salou.
Thus dealt he zealously for the law of God like as Phinees did unto Zambri the son of Salom.
Puis Mattathias cria d'une voix forte à travers la ville : Quiconque a le zèle de la loi et maintient l'alliance, qu'il me suive !
And Mattathias cried throughout the city with a loud voice, saying, Whosoever is zealous of the law, and maintaineth the covenant, let him follow me.
Et il s'enfuit avec ses fils dans les montagnes, abandonnant tout ce qu'ils avaient dans la ville.
So he and his sons fled into the mountains, and left all that ever they had in the city.
Alors beaucoup de ceux qui cherchaient la justice et le droit descendirent au désert pour s'y établir,
Then many that sought after justice and judgment went down into the wilderness, to dwell there:
eux, leurs enfants, leurs femmes et leur bétail, car les maux s'appesantissaient sur eux.
Both they, and their children, and their wives; and their cattle; because afflictions increased sore upon them.
On apprit aux officiers du roi et à la garnison qui était à Jérusalem, dans la cité de David, que des hommes, ayant transgressé l'ordre du roi, étaient descendus dans des cachettes au désert.
Now when it was told the king’s servants, and the host that was at Jerusalem, in the city of David, that certain men, who had broken the king’s commandment, were gone down into the secret places in the wilderness,
Un grand nombre de soldats les poursuivirent, les atteignirent, campèrent en face d'eux et leur livrèrent bataille le jour du sabbat.
They pursued after them a great number, and having overtaken them, they camped against them, and made war against them on the sabbath day.
Ils leur dirent : C'est assez ! Sortez, obéissez à l'ordre du roi, et vous vivrez.
And they said unto them, Let that which ye have done hitherto suffice; come forth, and do according to the commandment of the king, and ye shall live.
Mais ils répondirent : Nous ne sortirons pas, et nous n'obéirons pas à l'ordre du roi en profanant le jour du sabbat.
But they said, We will not come forth, neither will we do the king’s commandment, to profane the sabbath day.
Aussitôt, on engagea le combat contre eux.
So then they gave them the battle with all speed.
Ils ne leur répondirent pas, ne jetèrent aucune pierre contre eux et ne fermèrent pas leurs cachettes,
Howbeit they answered them not, neither cast they a stone at them, nor stopped the places where they lay hid;
disant : Mourons tous dans notre innocence ; le ciel et la terre nous sont témoins que vous nous faites périr injustement.
But said, Let us die all in our innocency: heaven and earth will testify for us, that ye put us to death wrongfully.
Ils les attaquèrent donc le jour du sabbat, et ils périrent, eux, leurs femmes, leurs enfants et leur bétail, au nombre de mille personnes.
So they rose up against them in battle on the sabbath, and they slew them, with their wives and children and their cattle, to the number of a thousand people.
Quand Mattathias et ses amis l'apprirent, ils menèrent sur eux un grand deuil.
Now when Mattathias and his friends understood hereof, they mourned for them right sore.
Ils se dirent l'un à l'autre : Si nous faisons tous comme nos frères ont fait, et si nous ne combattons pas contre les nations pour nos vies et pour nos lois, elles nous auront bientôt exterminés de la terre.
And one of them said to another, If we all do as our brethren have done, and fight not for our lives and laws against the heathen, they will now quickly root us out of the earth.
Ils prirent ce jour-là cette résolution : Quiconque viendra nous attaquer le jour du sabbat, nous le battrons, et nous ne mourrons pas tous comme nos frères qui ont été égorgés dans leurs cachettes.
At that time therefore they decreed, saying, Whosoever shall come to make battle with us on the sabbath day, we will fight against him; neither will we die all, as our brethren that were murdered in the secret places.
Alors se joignit à eux l'assemblée des Assidéens, hommes vaillants d'Israël, tous dévoués volontairement à la loi.
Then came there unto him a company of Assideans who were mighty men of Israel, even all such as were voluntarily devoted unto the law.
Tous ceux qui fuyaient la persécution se joignirent à eux et leur servirent de renfort.
Also all they that fled for persecution joined themselves unto them, and were a stay unto them.
Ils formèrent une armée, frappèrent les pécheurs dans leur colère et les hommes impies dans leur fureur ; les autres s'enfuirent vers les nations pour chercher un refuge.
So they joined their forces, and smote sinful men in their anger, and wicked men in their wrath: but the rest fled to the heathen for succour.
Mattathias et ses amis parcoururent le pays et renversèrent les autels ;
Then Mattathias and his friends went round about, and pulled down the altars:
ils circoncirent de force tous les enfants incirconcis qu'ils trouvèrent sur le territoire d'Israël.
And what children soever they found within the coast of Israel uncircumcised, those they circumcised valiantly.
Ils poursuivirent les fils de l'orgueil, et l'œuvre prospéra entre leurs mains.
They pursued also after the proud men, and the work prospered in their hand.
Ils arrachèrent la loi des mains des nations et des mains des rois, et ne laissèrent pas le pécheur triompher.
So they recovered the law out of the hand of the Gentiles, and out of the hand of kings, neither suffered they the sinner to triumph.
Comme le temps de sa mort approchait, Mattathias dit à ses fils : Maintenant l'orgueil et l'outrage ont pris de la force ; c'est un temps de ruine et de fureur ardente.
Now when the time drew near that Mattathias should die, he said unto his sons, Now hath pride and rebuke gotten strength, and the time of destruction, and the wrath of indignation:
Maintenant donc, mes fils, ayez du zèle pour la loi, et donnez vos vies pour l'alliance de nos pères.
Now therefore, my sons, be ye zealous for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of your fathers.
Souvenez-vous des œuvres que nos pères ont accomplies en leur temps, et vous recevrez une grande gloire et un nom éternel.
Call to remembrance what acts our fathers did in their time; so shall ye receive great honour and an everlasting name.

Phinees our father in being zealous and fervent obtained the covenant of an everlasting priesthood.
Josué, pour avoir accompli la parole, devint juge en Israël.
Jesus for fulfilling the word was made a judge in Israel.
Caleb, pour avoir rendu témoignage devant l'assemblée, reçut en héritage une part du pays.
Caleb for bearing witness before the congregation received the heritage of the land.
David, pour sa piété, posséda le trône d'un royaume éternel.
David for being merciful possessed the throne of an everlasting kingdom.
Élie, pour avoir été embrasé de zèle pour la loi, fut enlevé au ciel.
Elias for being zealous and fervent for the law was taken up into heaven.
Ananias, Azarias et Misaël, par leur foi, furent sauvés de la flamme.
Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, by believing were saved out of the flame.
Daniel, pour son innocence, fut délivré de la gueule des lions.
Daniel for his innocency was delivered from the mouth of lions.
Considérez ainsi, de génération en génération, que tous ceux qui espèrent en lui ne succombent pas.
And thus consider ye throughout all ages, that none that put their trust in him shall be overcome.
Ne craignez pas les paroles d'un homme pécheur, car sa gloire n'est que fumier et vers.
Fear not then the words of a sinful man: for his glory shall be dung and worms.
Aujourd'hui il s'élève, et demain on ne le trouvera plus, car il est retourné à sa poussière et son dessein a péri.
To day he shall be lifted up and to morrow he shall not be found, because he is returned into his dust, and his thought is come to nothing.
Vous donc, mes fils, prenez courage et soyez des hommes pour la loi, car par elle vous serez comblés de gloire.
Wherefore, ye my sons, be valiant and shew yourselves men in the behalf of the law; for by it shall ye obtain glory.
Voici Simon, votre frère ; je sais qu'il est un homme de conseil : écoutez-le toujours, il sera pour vous un père.
And behold, I know that your brother Simon is a man of counsel, give ear unto him alway: he shall be a father unto you.
Quant à Judas Macchabée, il a été vaillant et fort dès sa jeunesse : qu'il soit votre chef de guerre et qu'il dirige le combat du peuple.
As for Judas Maccabeus, he hath been mighty and strong, even from his youth up: let him be your captain, and fight the battle of the people.
Attirez à vous tous ceux qui observent la loi, et vengez l'oppression de votre peuple.
Take also unto you all those that observe the law, and avenge ye the wrong of your people.
Rendez aux nations ce qu'elles méritent, et soyez attentifs aux commandements de la loi.
Recompense fully the heathen, and take heed to the commandments of the law.
Il les bénit, et fut réuni à ses pères.
So he blessed them, and was gathered to his fathers.
Il mourut la cent quarante-sixième année ; ses fils l'ensevelirent dans le sépulcre de ses pères à Modin, et tout Israël mena sur lui un grand deuil.
And he died in the hundred forty and sixth year, and his sons buried him in the sepulchres of his fathers at Modin, and all Israel made great lamentation for him.
Alors Judas, appelé Macchabée, son fils, se leva à sa place.
Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.
Tous ses frères l'aidèrent, ainsi que tous ceux qui s'étaient attachés à son père, et ils soutinrent avec joie le combat d'Israël.
And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.
Il accrut la gloire de son peuple ; il revêtit la cuirasse comme un géant, ceignit ses armes de guerre et engagea des combats, protégeant le camp par son épée.
So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.
Il fut semblable à un lion dans ses exploits, et comme un lionceau rugissant après sa proie.
In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion’s whelp roaring for his prey.
Il poursuivit les impies, les traqua, et livra aux flammes ceux qui troublaient son peuple.
For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.
Les impies reculèrent de peur devant lui, tous les artisans d'iniquité furent épouvantés, et le salut prospéra entre ses mains.
Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.
Il remplit d'amertume de nombreux rois, réjouit Jacob par ses exploits, et sa mémoire est bénie à jamais.
He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.
Il parcourut les villes de Juda, en extermina les impies et détourna la colère d'Israël.
Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:
Sa renommée s'étendit jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, et il rassembla ceux qui étaient sur le point de périr.
So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.
Alors Apollonius rassembla des nations et une armée nombreuse de Samarie pour faire la guerre à Israël.
Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.
Judas, l'ayant appris, sortit à sa rencontre, le défit et le tua ; beaucoup tombèrent frappés à mort, et les autres s'enfuirent.
Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.
Judas s'empara de leurs dépouilles ; il prit aussi l'épée d'Apollonius et s'en servit pour combattre tout le reste de sa vie.
Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius’ sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.
Seron, chef de l'armée de Syrie, apprit que Judas avait rassemblé autour de lui une troupe et une assemblée de fidèles prêts à combattre avec lui.
Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;
Il dit : Je me ferai un nom et je me glorifierai dans le royaume ; j'irai combattre Judas et ceux qui sont avec lui, car ils méprisent l'ordre du roi.
He said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king’s commandment.
Il se prépara donc, et une puissante armée d'impies monta avec lui pour l'aider et pour tirer vengeance des enfants d'Israël.
So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel.
Lorsqu'il approcha de la montée de Beth-Horon, Judas sortit à sa rencontre avec une petite troupe.
And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company:
Ceux-ci, voyant l'armée qui venait à leur rencontre, dirent à Judas : Comment pourrons-nous, étant si peu nombreux, combattre une multitude si grande et si forte, alors que nous sommes épuisés par le jeûne de ce jour ?
Who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day?
Judas leur répondit : Il est facile à un grand nombre de tomber entre les mains de peu de gens ; car pour le Dieu du ciel, il n'y a pas de différence entre sauver avec beaucoup ou avec peu.
Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company:
Car la victoire à la guerre ne dépend pas de la multitude de l'armée, mais c'est du ciel que vient la force.
For the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven.
Ils viennent contre nous, pleins d'orgueil et d'iniquité, pour nous détruire, nous, nos femmes et nos enfants, et pour nous dépouiller ;
They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us:
mais nous, nous combattons pour nos vies et pour nos lois.
But we fight for our lives and our laws.
Lui-même les brisera devant nous ; vous donc, ne les craignez pas.
Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them.
Dès qu'il eut fini de parler, il se jeta soudain sur eux, et Seron fut brisé avec son armée devant lui.
Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him.
Ils les poursuivirent à la descente de Beth-Horon jusqu'à la plaine ; environ huit cents d'entre eux tombèrent, et le reste s'enfuit au pays des Philistins.
And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.
Alors la crainte de Judas et de ses frères, et l'épouvante, commencèrent à tomber sur les nations d'alentour.
Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them:
Sa renommée parvint jusqu'au roi, et toutes les nations parlaient des combats de Judas.
Insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.
Lorsque le roi Antiochus apprit ces nouvelles, il fut rempli de fureur ; il envoya rassembler toutes les forces de son royaume, une armée très puissante.
Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.
Il ouvrit son trésor et donna à ses troupes la solde d'une année, leur ordonnant d'être prêtes à toute éventualité.
He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.
Mais il vit que l'argent manquait dans ses coffres et que les tributs de la contrée étaient faibles, à cause de la dissension et du fléau qu'il avait apportés sur le pays en abolissant les lois qui existaient depuis les temps anciens.
Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time;
Il craignit de n'avoir plus de quoi payer les dépenses et faire des largesses comme il l'avait fait auparavant, car il surpassait en libéralité les rois qui l'avaient précédé.
He feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him.
Fort embarrassé en son esprit, il résolut d'aller en Perse pour lever les tributs de ces contrées et amasser beaucoup d'argent.
Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.
Il laissa Lysias, homme illustre et de sang royal, pour administrer les affaires du roi, depuis le fleuve Euphrate jusqu'aux frontières de l'Égypte,
So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt:
et pour élever son fils Antiochus jusqu'à son retour.
And to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.
Il lui remit la moitié de ses forces avec les éléphants, et lui donna ses instructions sur tout ce qu'il voulait, particulièrement au sujet des habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem :
Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem:
il devait envoyer contre eux une armée pour briser et détruire la force d'Israël et ce qui restait de Jérusalem, et pour effacer leur souvenir de ce lieu ;
To wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place;
il devait établir des étrangers sur tout leur territoire et partager leur terre au sort.
And that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot.
Le roi prit l'autre moitié de l'armée et partit d'Antioche, sa ville royale, la cent quarante-septième année ; il traversa le fleuve Euphrate et parcourut les provinces d'en haut.
So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and having passed the river Euphrates, he went through the high countries.
Lysias choisit Ptolémée, fils de Dorymène, Nicanor et Gorgias, hommes puissants d'entre les amis du roi.
Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king’s friends:
Il envoya avec eux quarante mille hommes de pied et sept mille cavaliers, pour aller au pays de Juda et le ravager, selon l'ordre du roi.
And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded.
Ils partirent avec toute leur armée, arrivèrent et campèrent près d'Emmaüs, dans la plaine.
So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country.
Les marchands du pays, ayant appris leur renommée, prirent beaucoup d'argent et d'or, ainsi que des entraves, et vinrent au camp pour acheter les enfants d'Israël comme esclaves ; une armée de Syrie et du pays des Philistins se joignit aussi à eux.
And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them.
Judas et ses frères virent que les malheurs se multipliaient et que les armées campaient sur leur territoire ; ils apprirent aussi que le roi avait ordonné de détruire le peuple et de l'exterminer.
Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders: for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them;
Ils se dirent l'un à l'autre : Relevons notre peuple de sa ruine, et combattons pour notre peuple et pour le sanctuaire.
They said one to another, Let us restore the decayed fortune of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary.
L'assemblée se réunit pour se préparer au combat, pour prier et pour demander grâce et miséricorde.
Then was the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.
Jérusalem était déserte comme un désert, aucun de ses enfants n'y entrait ni n'en sortait ; le sanctuaire était foulé aux pieds, des étrangers occupaient la citadelle, elle était devenue la demeure des nations ; la joie fut ôtée à Jacob, et la flûte et la harpe se turent.
Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased.
Ils se rassemblèrent donc et vinrent à Mitspa, en face de Jérusalem, car Mitspa était autrefois un lieu de prière pour Israël.
Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel.
Ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là, se revêtirent de sacs, mirent de la cendre sur leurs têtes et déchirèrent leurs vêtements.
Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes,
Ils ouvrirent le livre de la loi, pour y chercher ce que les nations demandent à leurs idoles.
And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images.
Ils apportèrent les vêtements sacerdotaux, les prémices et les dîmes, et ils firent venir les naziréens qui avaient accompli le temps de leur vœu.
They brought also the priests’ garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days.
Ils crièrent d'une voix forte vers le ciel, disant : Que ferons-nous de ceux-ci, et où les emmènerons-nous ?
Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?
Car ton sanctuaire est foulé aux pieds et profané, et tes prêtres sont dans le deuil et l'abaissement.
For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low.
Et voici que les nations se sont assemblées contre nous pour nous détruire ; tu sais ce qu'elles projettent contre nous.
And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.
Comment pourrons-nous leur résister, si tu ne nous viens pas en aide, ô Dieu ?
How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?
Ils sonnèrent des trompettes et crièrent d'une voix forte.
Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.
Après cela, Judas établit des chefs pour le peuple, des chefs de mille, de cent, de cinquante et de dix.
And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.
Quant à ceux qui bâtissaient des maisons, qui s'étaient fiancés, qui plantaient des vignes ou qui avaient peur, il leur dit de s'en retourner chacun chez soi, selon la loi.
But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.
L'armée se mit en marche et vint camper au midi d'Emmaüs.
So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus.
Judas dit : Armez-vous et soyez des vaillants ; soyez prêts dès le matin pour combattre ces nations qui se sont assemblées contre nous pour nous détruire, nous et notre sanctuaire.
And Judas said, arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary:
Car il vaut mieux pour nous mourir au combat que de voir les malheurs de notre nation et du sanctuaire.
For it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary.
Toutefois, telle qu'est la volonté de Dieu dans le ciel, qu'il en soit ainsi.
Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
Gorgias prit cinq mille hommes de pied et mille cavaliers d'élite, et l'armée partit de nuit,
Then took Gorgias five thousand footmen, and a thousand of the best horsemen, and removed out of the camp by night;
afin de tomber sur le camp des Juifs et de les frapper soudainement ; les hommes de la citadelle lui servaient de guides.
To the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews, and smite them suddenly. And the men of the fortress were his guides.
Judas l'apprit et se mit en marche, lui et ses vaillants hommes, pour frapper l'armée du roi qui était à Emmaüs,
Now when Judas heard thereof he himself removed, and the valiant men with him, that he might smite the king’s army which was at Emmaus,
pendant que les forces étaient encore dispersées hors du camp.
While as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp.
Gorgias vint de nuit au camp de Judas et n'y trouva personne ; il les chercha dans les montagnes, car il disait : Ils fuient devant nous.
In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas: and when he found no man there, he sought them in the mountains: for said he, These fellows flee from us
Dès que le jour parut, Judas se montra dans la plaine avec trois mille hommes ; mais ils n'avaient ni les armures ni les épées qu'ils auraient souhaitées.
But as soon as it was day, Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men, who nevertheless had neither armour nor swords to their minds.
Ils virent le camp des nations, fort et protégé, entouré de cavalerie, et c'étaient des hommes experts à la guerre.
And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well harnessed, and compassed round about with horsemen; and these were expert of war.
Judas dit aux hommes qui étaient avec lui : Ne craignez pas leur multitude et ne redoutez pas leur choc.
Then said Judas to the men that were with him, Fear ye not their multitude, neither be ye afraid of their assault.
Souvenez-vous comment nos pères furent délivrés dans la mer Rouge, quand Pharaon les poursuivait avec une armée.
Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.
Maintenant donc, crions vers le ciel ; peut-être le Seigneur aura-t-il pitié de nous, se souviendra-t-il de l'alliance de nos pères et brisera-t-il cette armée devant nous aujourd'hui.
Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us, and remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this host before our face this day:
Alors toutes les nations sauront qu'il y a quelqu'un qui rachète et sauve Israël.
That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel.
Les étrangers levèrent les yeux et les virent venir contre eux.
Then the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming over against them.
Ils sortirent du camp pour livrer bataille ; les hommes de Judas sonnèrent de la trompette.
Wherefore they went out of the camp to battle; but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets.
Ils engagèrent le combat ; les nations furent brisées et s'enfuirent dans la plaine.
So they joined battle, and the heathen being discomfited fled into the plain.
Tous ceux qui étaient à l'arrière-garde tombèrent par l'épée ; on les poursuivit jusqu'à Gazara et jusqu'aux plaines d'Idumée, d'Azot et de Jamnia ; il en tomba environ trois mille hommes.
Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword: for they pursued them unto Gazera, and unto the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, so that there were slain of them upon a three thousand men.
Judas revint avec son armée après les avoir poursuivis,
This done, Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them,
et il dit au peuple : Ne soyez pas avides de butin, car nous avons encore un combat à livrer.
And said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoil inasmuch as there is a battle before us,
Gorgias et son armée sont là, dans la montagne, près de nous ; mais résistez maintenant à nos ennemis et combattez-les, après quoi vous prendrez le butin en toute assurance.
And Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain: but stand ye now against our enemies, and overcome them, and after this ye may boldly take the spoils.
Comme Judas achevait de parler, on vit paraître un détachement qui regardait du haut de la montagne.
As Judas was yet speaking these words, there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain:
Ils virent que les leurs avaient été mis en fuite et que l'on brûlait le camp, car la fumée qui s'élevait indiquait ce qui s'était passé.
Who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight and were burning the tents; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done:
À cette vue, ils furent saisis d'une grande crainte ; et voyant aussi l'armée de Judas dans la plaine, prête au combat,
When therefore they perceived these things, they were sore afraid, and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight,
ils s'enfuirent tous au pays des étrangers.
They fled every one into the land of strangers.
Judas revint pour piller le camp ; ils recueillirent beaucoup d'or et d'argent, de la soie bleue, de la pourpre marine et de grandes richesses.
Then Judas returned to spoil the tents, where they got much gold, and silver, and blue silk, and purple of the sea, and great riches.
Au retour, ils chantaient des hymnes et bénissaient le Seigneur dans le ciel, car il est bon, car sa miséricorde dure à toujours.
After this they went home, and sung a song of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord in heaven: because it is good, because his mercy endureth forever.
Israël eut une grande délivrance en ce jour-là.
Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.
Ceux des étrangers qui s'étaient échappés vinrent annoncer à Lysias tout ce qui était arrivé.
Now all the strangers that had escaped came and told Lysias what had happened:
À cette nouvelle, il fut consterné et découragé, parce qu'Israël n'avait pas été traité comme il le voulait, et que les ordres du roi n'avaient pas été exécutés.
Who, when he heard thereof, was confounded and discouraged, because neither such things as he would were done unto Israel, nor such things as the king commanded him were come to pass.
L'année suivante, il rassembla soixante mille hommes d'élite et cinq mille cavaliers pour les réduire.
The next year therefore following Lysias gathered together threescore thousand choice men of foot, and five thousand horsemen, that he might subdue them.
Ils vinrent en Idumée et campèrent à Beth-Sour ; Judas vint à leur rencontre avec dix mille hommes.
So they came into Idumea, and pitched their tents at Bethsura, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.
Voyant cette armée puissante, il fit cette prière : Béni sois-tu, Sauveur d'Israël, qui as brisé l'élan du géant par la main de ton serviteur David, et qui as livré le camp des étrangers entre les mains de Jonathan, fils de Saül, et de son écuyer.
And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armourbearer;
Livre cette armée aux mains de ton peuple Israël, et qu'ils soient couverts de honte avec leur puissance et leurs cavaliers.
Shut up this army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and horsemen:

Make them to be of no courage, and cause the boldness of their strength to fall away, and let them quake at their destruction:
Renverse-les par l'épée de ceux qui t'aiment, et que tous ceux qui connaissent ton nom te louent par des hymnes.
Cast them down with the sword of them that love thee, and let all those that know thy name praise thee with thanksgiving.
Ils engagèrent le combat, et environ cinq mille hommes de l'armée de Lysias tombèrent ; ils tombèrent devant eux.
So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain.
Lysias, voyant la déroute de son armée et la hardiesse des soldats de Judas, et comment ils étaient prêts à vivre ou à mourir vaillamment, s'en retourna à Antioche ; il y leva des troupes étrangères pour revenir en Judée avec une armée plus nombreuse.
Now when Lysias saw his army put to flight, and the manliness of Judas’ soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into Judea.
Judas et ses frères dirent : Voici que nos ennemis sont écrasés ; montons pour purifier le sanctuaire et pour le dédicacer.
Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary.
Toute l'armée se rassembla et ils montèrent sur la montagne de Sion.
Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion.
Ils virent le sanctuaire désert, l'autel profané, les portes brûlées, des buissons croissant dans les parvis comme dans une forêt ou sur une montagne, et les chambres des prêtres renversées.
And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests’ chambers pulled down;
Ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, menèrent un grand deuil et se couvrirent la tête de cendre.
They rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads,
Ils tombèrent la face contre terre, sonnèrent des trompettes de signal et crièrent vers le ciel.
And fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven.
Alors Judas ordonna à des hommes de combattre ceux de la citadelle, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût purifié le sanctuaire.
Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary.
Il choisit des prêtres sans tache, attachés à la loi.
So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law:
Ils purifièrent le sanctuaire et transportèrent les pierres de la souillure dans un lieu impur.
Who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place.
Ils délibérèrent sur ce qu'ils feraient de l'autel des holocaustes, qui avait été profané.
And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned;
Ils jugèrent bon de le démolir, de peur qu'il ne leur fût un opprobre, parce que les nations l'avaient souillé ; ils le démolirent donc.
They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down,
Ils déposèrent les pierres sur la montagne du temple, dans un lieu convenable, jusqu'à ce qu'il vînt un prophète qui se prononçât à leur sujet.
And laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them.
Ils prirent des pierres brutes, selon la loi, et bâtirent un autel neuf sur le modèle de l'ancien.
Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former;
Ils restaurèrent le sanctuaire et l'intérieur du temple, et ils sanctifièrent les parvis.
And made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts.
Ils firent de nouveaux vases sacrés, et ils placèrent dans le temple le chandelier, l'autel des parfums et la table.
They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of burnt offerings, and of incense, and the table.
Ils brûlèrent de l'encens sur l'autel et allumèrent les lampes du chandelier, qui éclairèrent le temple.
And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple.
Ils mirent les pains sur la table, suspendirent les voiles et achevèrent tous les travaux qu'ils avaient entrepris.
Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make.
Le vingt-cinquième jour du neuvième mois, c'est-à-dire le mois de Kisleu, la cent quarante-huitième année, ils se levèrent de grand matin,
Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning,
et offrirent un sacrifice selon la loi sur le nouvel autel des holocaustes qu'ils avaient fait.
And offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made.
Au temps même et au jour où les nations l'avaient profané, il fut dédicacé avec des chants, des cithares, des harpes et des cymbales.
Look, at what time and what day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals.
Tout le peuple tomba la face contre terre ; ils adorèrent et louèrent dans le ciel celui qui les avait fait prospérer.
Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success.
Ils célébrèrent la dédicace de l'autel pendant huit jours, offrant des holocaustes avec joie et sacrifiant un sacrifice de salut et de louange.
And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise.
Ils ornèrent la façade du temple de couronnes d'or et de petits boucliers ; ils restaurèrent les entrées et les chambres, et y mirent des portes.
They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold, and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them.
Il y eut une très grande joie parmi le peuple, et l'opprobre des nations fut effacé.
Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away.
Judas, ses frères et toute l'assemblée d'Israël ordonnèrent que les jours de la dédicace de l'autel seraient célébrés en leur temps, d'année en année, pendant huit jours, à partir du vingt-cinquième jour du mois de Kisleu, avec joie et allégresse.
Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness.
En ce temps-là, ils entourèrent la montagne de Sion de murs élevés et de tours puissantes, de peur que les nations ne vinssent la fouler aux pieds comme elles l'avaient fait auparavant.
At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down as they had done before.
Judas y établit une garnison pour la garder, et il fortifia Beth-Sour pour la protéger, afin que le peuple eût un rempart contre l'Idumée.
And they set there a garrison to keep it, and fortified Bethsura to preserve it; that the people might have a defence against Idumea.
Lorsque les nations d'alentour apprirent que l'autel avait été rebâti et le sanctuaire restauré comme auparavant, elles en furent fort irritées.
Now when the nations round about heard that the altar was built and the sanctuary renewed as before, it displeased them very much.
Elles résolurent d'exterminer la race de Jacob qui était au milieu d'elles, et elles commencèrent à tuer et à détruire parmi le peuple.
Wherefore they thought to destroy the generation of Jacob that was among them, and thereupon they began to slay and destroy the people.
Alors Judas fit la guerre aux fils d'Ésaü en Idumée, à l'Akrabattène, parce qu'ils harcelaient Israël ; il leur porta un grand coup, les humilia et s'empara de leurs dépouilles.
Then Judas fought against the children of Esau in Idumea at Arabattine, because they besieged Gael: and he gave them a great overthrow, and abated their courage, and took their spoils.
Il se souvint aussi de la méchanceté des fils de Béan, qui étaient pour le peuple un piège et une pierre d'achoppement, en lui dressant des embuscades sur les chemins.
Also he remembered the injury of the children of Bean, who had been a snare and an offence unto the people, in that they lay in wait for them in the ways.
Il les enferma dans leurs tours, les assiégea et les voua à l'anathème ; il brûla leurs tours avec le feu et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient.
He shut them up therefore in the towers, and encamped against them, and destroyed them utterly, and burned the towers of that place with fire, and all that were therein.
Puis il passa chez les fils d'Ammon, où il trouva une troupe nombreuse et un peuple abondant, ayant Timothée pour chef.
Afterward he passed over to the children of Ammon, where he found a mighty power, and much people, with Timotheus their captain.
Il leur livra de nombreux combats ; ils furent brisés devant lui, et il les défit.
So he fought many battles with them, till at length they were discomfited before him; and he smote them.
Il prit Jazer avec les villes de son ressort, puis il revint en Judée.
And when he had taken Jazar, with the towns belonging thereto, he returned into Judea.
Les nations qui étaient en Galaad se rassemblèrent contre les Israélites qui se trouvaient sur leur territoire pour les détruire ; mais ceux-ci s'enfuirent dans la forteresse de Dathema.
Then the heathen that were at Galaad assembled themselves together against the Israelites that were in their quarters, to destroy them; but they fled to the fortress of Dathema.
Ils envoyèrent des lettres à Judas et à ses frères, disant : Les nations qui nous entourent se sont assemblées contre nous pour nous exterminer ;
And sent letters unto Judas and his brethren, The heathen that are round about us are assembled together against us to destroy us:
elles se préparent à venir s'emparer de la forteresse où nous nous sommes réfugiés, et Timothée est le chef de leur armée.
And they are preparing to come and take the fortress whereunto we are fled, Timotheus being captain of their host.
Viens donc maintenant nous délivrer de leurs mains, car beaucoup d'entre nous ont péri ;
Come now therefore, and deliver us from their hands, for many of us are slain:
tous nos frères qui étaient au pays de Tob ont été mis à mort, leurs femmes et leurs enfants ont été emmenés captifs avec leurs biens, et environ mille hommes y ont péri.
Yea, all our brethren that were in the places of Tobie are put to death: their wives and their children also they have carried away captives, and borne away their stuff; and they have destroyed there about a thousand men.
Pendant qu'on lisait encore ces lettres, voici que d'autres messagers arrivèrent de Galilée, les vêtements déchirés, apportant des nouvelles semblables,
While these letters were yet reading, behold, there came other messengers from Galilee with their clothes rent, who reported on this wise,
et disant : Ceux de Ptolémaïs, de Tyr et de Sidon se sont assemblés, avec toute la Galilée des nations, pour nous anéantir.
And said, They of Ptolemais, and of Tyrus, and Sidon, and all Galilee of the Gentiles, are assembled together against us to consume us.
Lorsque Judas et le peuple entendirent ces paroles, une grande assemblée se réunit pour délibérer sur ce qu'il fallait faire pour leurs frères qui étaient dans la détresse et attaqués par les nations.
Now when Judas and the people heard these words, there assembled a great congregation together, to consult what they should do for their brethren, that were in trouble, and assaulted of them.
Judas dit à Simon, son frère : Choisis-toi des hommes et va délivrer tes frères qui sont en Galilée ; moi et Jonathan, mon frère, nous irons au pays de Galaad.
Then said Judas unto Simon his brother, Choose thee out men, and go and deliver thy brethren that are in Galilee, for I and Jonathan my brother will go into the country of Galaad.
Il laissa Joseph, fils de Zacharie, et Azarias, chefs du peuple, avec le reste de l'armée en Judée pour la garder.
So he left Joseph the son of Zacharias, and Azarias, captains of the people, with the remnant of the host in Judea to keep it.
Il leur donna cet ordre : Prenez le commandement de ce peuple, mais n'engagez pas de combat contre les nations jusqu'à ce que nous soyons de retour.
Unto whom he gave commandment, saying, Take ye the charge of this people, and see that ye make not war against the heathen until the time that we come again.
Trois mille hommes furent donnés à Simon pour aller en Galilée, et huit mille à Judas pour le pays de Galaad.
Now unto Simon were given three thousand men to go into Galilee, and unto Judas eight thousand men for the country of Galaad.
Simon partit pour la Galilée et livra de nombreux combats aux nations ; les nations furent brisées devant lui.
Then went Simon into Galilee, where he fought many battles with the heathen, so that the heathen were discomfited by him.
Il les poursuivit jusqu'à la porte de Ptolémaïs ; il tomba environ trois mille hommes parmi les nations, et il prit leurs dépouilles.
And he pursued them unto the gate of Ptolemais; and there were slain of the heathen about three thousand men, whose spoils he took.
Il emmena avec lui ceux qui étaient en Galilée et en Arbattis, avec leurs femmes, leurs enfants et tout ce qu'ils possédaient, et il les amena en Judée avec une grande joie.
And those that were in Galilee, and in Arbattis, with their wives and their children, and all that they had, took he away with him, and brought them into Judea with great joy.
Judas Macchabée et Jonathan, son frère, passèrent le Jourdain et marchèrent trois jours dans le désert.
Judas Maccabeus also and his brother Jonathan went over Jordan, and travelled three days’ journey in the wilderness,
Ils rencontrèrent les Nabatéens, qui les accueillirent pacifiquement et leur racontèrent tout ce qui était arrivé à leurs frères au pays de Galaad,
Where they met with the Nabathites, who came unto them in a peaceable manner, and told them every thing that had happened to their brethren in the land of Galaad:
et comment beaucoup d'entre eux étaient enfermés dans Bosra, Bosor, Aléma, Casphor, Makéd et Carnaïm, toutes villes fortes et grandes ;
And how that many of them were shut up in Bosora, and Bosor, and Alema, Casphor, Maked, and Carnaim; all these cities are strong and great:
qu'ils étaient aussi enfermés dans les autres villes de Galaad, et que l'ennemi s'était préparé à attaquer les forteresses le lendemain, pour s'en emparer et les détruire tous en un seul jour.
And that they were shut up in the rest of the cities of the country of Galaad, and that against to morrow they had appointed to bring their host against the forts, and to take them, and to destroy them all in one day.
Aussitôt Judas et son armée prirent le chemin du désert vers Bosra ; il s'empara de la ville, fit passer tous les mâles au fil de l'épée, prit toutes leurs dépouilles et livra la ville au feu.
Hereupon Judas and his host turned suddenly by the way of the wilderness unto Bosora; and when he had won the city, he slew all the males with the edge of the sword, and took all their spoils, and burned the city with fire,
Il partit de là pendant la nuit et marcha jusqu'à la forteresse.
From whence he removed by night, and went till he came to the fortress.
Le matin venu, ils levèrent les yeux, et voici qu'une multitude innombrable portait des échelles et des machines pour prendre la forteresse ; ils l'attaquaient.
And betimes in the morning they looked up, and, behold, there was an innumerable people bearing ladders and other engines of war, to take the fortress: for they assaulted them.
Judas, voyant que le combat commençait et que le cri de la ville montait jusqu'au ciel avec le son des trompettes et une grande clameur,
When Judas therefore saw that the battle was begun, and that the cry of the city went up to heaven, with trumpets, and a great sound,
dit à ses soldats : Combattez aujourd'hui pour vos frères !
He said unto his host, Fight this day for your brethren.
Il s'avança derrière l'ennemi avec trois corps de troupes ; ils sonnèrent des trompettes et crièrent en priant.
So he went forth behind them in three companies, who sounded their trumpets, and cried with prayer.
L'armée de Timothée, reconnaissant que c'était le Macchabée, s'enfuit devant lui ; il leur porta un grand coup, et il en tomba environ huit mille hommes ce jour-là.
Then the host of Timotheus, knowing that it was Maccabeus, fled from him: wherefore he smote them with a great slaughter; so that there were killed of them that day about eight thousand men.
Judas se détourna vers Mitspa ; il l'attaqua, s'en empara, tua tous les mâles, prit les dépouilles et livra la ville au feu.
This done, Judas turned aside to Maspha; and after he had assaulted it he took and slew all the males therein, and received the spoils thereof and and burnt it with fire.
De là, il alla prendre Casphon, Makéd, Bosor et les autres villes de Galaad.
From thence went he, and took Casphon, Maged, Bosor, and the other cities of the country of Galaad.
Après ces événements, Timothée rassembla une autre armée et campa en face de Raphon, de l'autre côté du torrent.
After these things gathered Timotheus another host and encamped against Raphon beyond the brook.
Judas envoya des hommes pour explorer le camp ; ils lui rapportèrent : Toutes les nations qui nous entourent se sont rassemblées auprès de lui, formant une armée immense.
So Judas sent men to espy the host, who brought him word, saying, All the heathen that be round about us are assembled unto them, even a very great host.
Il a aussi loué des Arabes pour lui venir en aide, et ils campent de l'autre côté du torrent, prêts à venir te combattre. Judas alla à leur rencontre.
He hath also hired the Arabians to help them and they have pitched their tents beyond the brook, ready to come and fight against thee. Upon this Judas went to meet them.
Timothée dit aux chefs de son armée : Quand Judas et son armée approcheront du torrent, s'il passe le premier vers nous, nous ne pourrons lui résister, car il l'emportera sur nous ;
Then Timotheus said unto the captains of his host, When Judas and his host come near the brook, if he pass over first unto us, we shall not be able to withstand him; for he will mightily prevail against us:
mais s'il a peur et campe de l'autre côté du fleuve, nous passerons vers lui et nous l'emporterons sur lui.
But if he be afraid, and camp beyond the river, we shall go over unto him, and prevail against him.
Lorsque Judas approcha du torrent, il posta les scribes du peuple au bord du torrent et leur donna cet ordre : Ne laissez personne s'arrêter dans le camp, mais que tous marchent au combat.
Now when Judas came near the brook, he caused the scribes of the people to remain by the brook: unto whom he gave commandment, saying, Suffer no man to remain in the camp, but let all come to the battle.
Il passa le premier vers eux, et tout le peuple après lui ; toutes les nations furent brisées devant lui, jetèrent leurs armes et s'enfuirent vers le temple de Carnaïm.
So he went first over unto them, and all the people after him: then all the heathen, being discomfited before him, cast away their weapons, and fled unto the temple that was at Carnaim.
Mais ils s'emparèrent de la ville et brûlèrent le temple avec tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. C'est ainsi que Carnaïm fut domptée, et ils ne purent plus résister à Judas.
But they took the city, and burned the temple with all that were therein. Thus was Carnaim subdued, neither could they stand any longer before Judas.
Judas rassembla tous les Israélites qui étaient au pays de Galaad, du plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, avec leurs femmes, leurs enfants et leurs bagages, une armée immense, pour se rendre au pays de Juda.
Then Judas gathered together all the Israelites that were in the country of Galaad, from the least unto the greatest, even their wives, and their children, and their stuff, a very great host, to the end they might come into the land of Judea.
Or, lorsqu'ils arrivèrent à Ephron, (c'était une grande ville sur le chemin qu'ils devaient suivre, fort bien fortifiée), ils ne purent s'en détourner ni à droite ni à gauche, mais il leur fallut passer par le milieu d'elle.
Now when they came unto Ephron, (this was a great city in the way as they should go, very well fortified) they could not turn from it, either on the right hand or the left, but must needs pass through the midst of it.
Alors les gens de la ville leur en fermèrent l'accès et bouchèrent les portes avec des pierres.
Then they of the city shut them out, and stopped up the gates with stones.
Sur quoi Judas leur envoya des paroles de paix, disant : Laissez-nous passer par votre pays pour aller dans notre propre contrée, et nul ne vous fera de mal ; nous ne ferons que passer à pied : toutefois ils ne voulurent point lui ouvrir.
Whereupon Judas sent unto them in peaceable manner, saying, Let us pass through your land to go into our own country, and none shall do you any hurt; we will only pass through on foot: howbeit they would not open unto him.
C'est pourquoi Judas ordonna de faire une proclamation dans toute l'armée, afin que chaque homme dressât sa tente au lieu où il se trouvait.
Wherefore Judas commanded a proclamation to be made throughout the host, that every man should pitch his tent in the place where he was.
Les soldats campèrent donc, et ils assaillirent la ville tout ce jour-là et toute cette nuit, jusqu'à ce qu'enfin la ville fût livrée entre ses mains.
So the soldiers pitched, and assaulted the city all that day and all that night, till at the length the city was delivered into his hands:
Il fit alors passer tous les mâles au fil de l'épée, rasa la ville, en prit les dépouilles, et traversa la ville sur les corps de ceux qui avaient été tués.
Who then slew all the males with the edge of the sword, and rased the city, and took the spoils thereof, and passed through the city over them that were slain.
Après cela, ils passèrent le Jourdain pour aller dans la grande plaine devant Bethsan.
After this went they over Jordan into the great plain before Bethsan.
Et Judas rassembla les traînards, et exhorta le peuple tout le long du chemin, jusqu'à ce qu'ils arrivassent au pays de Judée.
And Judas gathered together those that came behind, and exhorted the people all the way through, till they came into the land of Judea.
Ils montèrent donc à la montagne de Sion avec joie et allégresse, où ils offrirent des holocaustes, parce qu'aucun d'eux n'avait été tué jusqu'à ce qu'ils fussent revenus en paix.
So they went up to mount Sion with joy and gladness, where they offered burnt offerings, because not one of them were slain until they had returned in peace.
Or, pendant que Judas et Jonathan étaient au pays de Galaad, et Simon son frère en Galilée devant Ptolémaïs,
Now what time as Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Galaad, and Simon his brother in Galilee before Ptolemais,
Joseph, fils de Zacharie, et Azarias, capitaines des garnisons, entendirent parler des exploits et des faits de guerre qu'ils avaient accomplis.
Joseph the son of Zacharias, and Azarias, captains of the garrisons, heard of the valiant acts and warlike deeds which they had done.
C'est pourquoi ils dirent : Faisons-nous aussi un nom, et allons combattre les nations qui sont autour de nous.
Wherefore they said, Let us also get us a name, and go fight against the heathen that are round about us.
Ayant donc donné des ordres à la garnison qui était avec eux, ils marchèrent vers Jamnia.
So when they had given charge unto the garrison that was with them, they went toward Jamnia.
Alors Gorgias sortit de la ville avec ses hommes pour combattre contre eux.
Then came Gorgias and his men out of the city to fight against them.
Et il advint que Joseph et Azarias furent mis en fuite, et poursuivis jusqu'aux frontières de la Judée : et il tomba ce jour-là environ deux mille hommes du peuple d'Israël.
And so it was, that Joseph and Azaras were put to flight, and pursued unto the borders of Judea: and there were slain that day of the people of Israel about two thousand men.
Ainsi y eut-il une grande défaite parmi les enfants d'Israël, parce qu'ils n'avaient pas obéi à Judas et à ses frères, mais pensaient accomplir quelque exploit.
Thus was there a great overthrow among the children of Israel, because they were not obedient unto Judas and his brethren, but thought to do some valiant act.
D'ailleurs, ces hommes n'étaient pas de la race de ceux par la main desquels la délivrance fut donnée à Israël.
Moreover these men came not of the seed of those, by whose hand deliverance was given unto Israel.
Toutefois, l'homme Judas et ses frères étaient en grande renommée aux yeux de tout Israël et de toutes les nations, partout où leur nom était entendu ;
Howbeit the man Judas and his brethren were greatly renowned in the sight of all Israel, and of all the heathen, wheresoever their name was heard of;
De sorte que le peuple s'assemblait auprès d'eux avec des acclamations de joie.
Insomuch as the the people assembled unto them with joyful acclamations.
Ensuite Judas partit avec ses frères, et combattit les enfants d'Ésaü dans le pays du midi, où il frappa Hébron et ses dépendances, en abattit la forteresse et en brûla les tours tout autour.
Afterward went Judas forth with his brethren, and fought against the children of Esau in the land toward the south, where he smote Hebron, and the towns thereof, and pulled down the fortress of it, and burned the towers thereof round about.
De là, il partit pour aller au pays des Philistins, et passa par la Samarie.
From thence he removed to go into the land of the Philistines, and passed through Samaria.
En ce temps-là, certains prêtres, désirant montrer leur vaillance, furent tués au combat, pour être sortis combattre inconsidérément.
At that time certain priests, desirous to shew their valour, were slain in battle, for that they went out to fight unadvisedly.
Ainsi Judas se tourna vers Azot, au pays des Philistins, et après avoir abattu leurs autels, brûlé au feu leurs images taillées et pillé leurs villes, il revint au pays de Judée.
So Judas turned to Azotus in the land of the Philistines, and when he had pulled down their altars, and burned their carved images with fire, and spoiled their cities, he returned into the land of Judea.
Vers ce temps-là, le roi Antiochus, parcourant les hautes provinces, apprit qu'Élymaïs, au pays de Perse, était une ville fort renommée pour ses richesses, son argent et son or ;
About that time king Antiochus travelling through the high countries heard say, that Elymais in the country of Persia was a city greatly renowned for riches, silver, and gold;
Et qu'il s'y trouvait un temple fort riche, où se trouvaient des voiles d'or, des cuirasses et des boucliers qu'Alexandre, fils de Philippe, le roi macédonien, qui régna le premier sur les Grecs, y avait laissés.
And that there was in it a very rich temple, wherein were coverings of gold, and breastplates, and shields, which Alexander, son of Philip, the Macedonian king, who reigned first among the Grecians, had left there.
C'est pourquoi il vint et chercha à prendre la ville et à la piller ; mais il ne le put, parce que les gens de la ville, en ayant été avertis,
Wherefore he came and sought to take the city, and to spoil it; but he was not able, because they of the city, having had warning thereof,
Se levèrent contre lui pour combattre : il s'enfuit donc, et partit de là avec une grande tristesse, et retourna à Babylone.
Rose up against him in battle: so he fled, and departed thence with great heaviness, and returned to Babylon.
De plus, il vint quelqu'un lui apporter des nouvelles en Perse, disant que les armées qui étaient allées contre le pays de Judée avaient été mises en fuite :
Moreover there came one who brought him tidings into Persia, that the armies, which went against the land of Judea, were put to flight:
Et que Lysias, qui était parti d'abord avec une grande puissance, avait été repoussé par les Juifs ; et qu'ils s'étaient fortifiés par les armes, la puissance et l'abondance des dépouilles qu'ils avaient prises sur les armées qu'ils avaient détruites :
And that Lysias, who went forth first with a great power was driven away of the Jews; and that they were made strong by the armour, and power, and store of spoils, which they had gotten of the armies, whom they had destroyed:
Et aussi qu'ils avaient abattu l'abomination qu'il avait élevée sur l'autel à Jérusalem, et qu'ils avaient entouré le sanctuaire de hautes murailles, comme auparavant, ainsi que sa ville de Bethsura.
Also that they had pulled down the abomination, which he had set up upon the altar in Jerusalem, and that they had compassed about the sanctuary with high walls, as before, and his city Bethsura.
Or, quand le roi entendit ces paroles, il fut frappé d'étonnement et fort ému : sur quoi il se jeta sur son lit et tomba malade de chagrin, parce que les choses n'étaient pas arrivées comme il l'avait espéré.
Now when the king heard these words, he was astonished and sore moved: whereupon he laid him down upon his bed, and fell sick for grief, because it had not befallen him as he looked for.
Et il y resta plusieurs jours : car son chagrin augmentait de plus en plus, et il comptait bien qu'il allait mourir.
And there he continued many days: for his grief was ever more and more, and he made account that he should die.
C'est pourquoi il appela tous ses amis et leur dit : Le sommeil a fui de mes yeux, et mon cœur défaille à cause de mes soucis.
Wherefore he called for all his friends, and said unto them, The sleep is gone from mine eyes, and my heart faileth for very care.
Et je me disais en moi-même : Dans quelle tribulation suis-je tombé, et dans quel flot de misère suis-je maintenant ! car j'étais libéral et aimé dans ma puissance.
And I thought with myself, Into what tribulation am I come, and how great a flood of misery is it, wherein now I am! for I was bountiful and beloved in my power.
Mais maintenant je me souviens des maux que j'ai faits à Jérusalem, et que j'ai pris tous les vases d'or et d'argent qui s'y trouvaient, et que j'ai envoyé détruire les habitants de la Judée sans cause.
But now I remember the evils that I did at Jerusalem, and that I took all the vessels of gold and silver that were therein, and sent to destroy the inhabitants of Judea without a cause.
Je reconnais donc que c'est à cause de cela que ces malheurs m'ont atteint, et voici que je péris par une grande tristesse dans une terre étrangère.
I perceive therefore that for this cause these troubles are come upon me, and, behold, I perish through great grief in a strange land.
Alors il appela Philippe, l'un de ses amis, qu'il établit gouverneur sur tout son royaume,
Then called he for Philip, one of his friends, who he made ruler over all his realm,
Et il lui donna le diadème, sa robe et son sceau, afin qu'il élevât son fils Antiochus et le préparât pour le royaume.
And gave him the crown, and his robe, and his signet, to the end he should bring up his son Antiochus, and nourish him up for the kingdom.
Ainsi le roi Antiochus mourut là, en l'an cent quarante-neuf.
So king Antiochus died there in the hundred forty and ninth year.
Or, quand Lysias sut que le roi était mort, il établit pour régner à sa place Antiochus son fils, qu'il avait élevé dès sa jeunesse, et il l'appela du nom d'Eupator.
Now when Lysias knew that the king was dead, he set up Antiochus his son, whom he had brought up being young, to reign in his stead, and his name he called Eupator.
Vers ce temps-là, ceux qui étaient dans la citadelle enfermaient les Israélites autour du sanctuaire, et cherchaient toujours à leur nuire et à fortifier les païens.
About this time they that were in the tower shut up the Israelites round about the sanctuary, and sought always their hurt, and the strengthening of the heathen.
C'est pourquoi Judas, résolu à les détruire, convoqua tout le peuple pour les assiéger.
Wherefore Judas, purposing to destroy them, called all the people together to besiege them.
Ils s'assemblèrent donc et les assiégèrent en l'an cent cinquante, et il éleva contre eux des terrasses pour le tir et d'autres machines.
So they came together, and besieged them in the hundred and fiftieth year, and he made mounts for shot against them, and other engines.
Toutefois, quelques-uns des assiégés s'échappèrent, auxquels se joignirent certains hommes impies d'Israël :
Howbeit certain of them that were besieged got forth, unto whom some ungodly men of Israel joined themselves:
Et ils allèrent vers le roi et dirent : Jusques à quand tarderas-tu à faire justice et à venger nos frères ?
And they went unto the king, and said, How long will it be ere thou execute judgment, and avenge our brethren?
Nous avons voulu servir ton père, agir selon sa volonté et obéir à ses commandements ;
We have been willing to serve thy father, and to do as he would have us, and to obey his commandments;
C'est pour cette cause que ceux de notre nation assiègent la citadelle et se sont éloignés de nous : de plus, ils ont tué tous ceux d'entre nous qu'ils ont pu trouver, et ont pillé notre héritage.
For which cause they of our nation besiege the tower, and are alienated from us: moreover as many of us as they could light on they slew, and spoiled our inheritance.
Et ils n'ont pas seulement étendu la main sur nous, mais aussi sur leurs frontières.
Neither have they stretched out their hand against us only, but also against their borders.
Et voici qu'en ce jour ils assiègent la citadelle de Jérusalem pour la prendre : ils ont aussi fortifié le sanctuaire et Bethsura.
And, behold, this day are they besieging the tower at Jerusalem, to take it: the sanctuary also and Bethsura have they fortified.
C'est pourquoi, si tu ne les préviens promptement, ils feront de plus grandes choses que celles-ci, et tu ne pourras plus les maîtriser.
Wherefore if thou dost not prevent them quickly, they will do the greater things than these, neither shalt thou be able to rule them.
Or, quand le roi entendit cela, il fut irrité, et rassembla tous ses amis, les capitaines de son armée et ceux qui avaient la charge de la cavalerie.
Now when the king heard this, he was angry, and gathered together all his friends, and the captains of his army, and those that had charge of the horse.
Il lui vint aussi des autres royaumes et des îles de la mer des bandes de soldats mercenaires.
There came also unto him from other kingdoms, and from isles of the sea, bands of hired soldiers.
De sorte que le nombre de son armée était de cent mille hommes de pied, vingt mille cavaliers et trente-deux éléphants exercés au combat.
So that the number of his army was an hundred thousand footmen, and twenty thousand horsemen, and two and thirty elephants exercised in battle.
Ceux-ci passèrent par l'Idumée et campèrent contre Bethsura, qu'ils assaillirent pendant plusieurs jours, construisant des machines de guerre ; mais ceux de Bethsura sortirent, les brûlèrent par le feu et combattirent vaillamment.
These went through Idumea, and pitched against Bethsura, which they assaulted many days, making engines of war; but they of Bethsura came out, and burned them with fire, and fought valiantly.
Sur quoi Judas quitta la citadelle et campa à Bethzacharie, vis-à-vis du camp du roi.
Upon this Judas removed from the tower, and pitched in Bathzacharias, over against the king’s camp.
Alors le roi, se levant de grand matin, fit marcher son armée avec impétuosité vers Bethzacharie, où ses troupes se préparèrent au combat et sonnèrent des trompettes.
Then the king rising very early marched fiercely with his host toward Bathzacharias, where his armies made them ready to battle, and sounded the trumpets.
Et afin d'exciter les éléphants au combat, ils leur montrèrent le sang des raisins et des mûres.
And to the end they might provoke the elephants to fight, they shewed them the blood of grapes and mulberries.
De plus, ils répartirent les bêtes entre les légions, et pour chaque éléphant ils assignèrent mille hommes armés de cottes de mailles et de casques d'airain sur leurs têtes ; et outre cela, pour chaque bête, furent ordonnés cinq cents cavaliers d'élite.
Moreover they divided the beasts among the armies, and for every elephant they appointed a thousand men, armed with coats of mail, and with helmets of brass on their heads; and beside this, for every beast were ordained five hundred horsemen of the best.
Ceux-ci étaient prêts en toute occasion : partout où se trouvait la bête, et partout où elle allait, ils allaient aussi, et ne s'éloignaient point d'elle.
These were ready at every occasion: wheresoever the beast was, and whithersoever the beast went, they went also, neither departed they from him.
Et sur les bêtes étaient de fortes tours de bois qui couvraient chacune d'elles, et qui y étaient fixées par des engins : il y avait aussi sur chacune trente-deux hommes vaillants qui combattaient sur elles, outre l'Indien qui la gouvernait.
And upon the beasts were there strong towers of wood, which covered every one of them, and were girt fast unto them with devices: there were also upon every one two and thirty strong men, that fought upon them, beside the Indian that ruled him.
Quant au reste des cavaliers, ils les placèrent de part et d'autre aux deux ailes de l'armée, leur donnant des signaux pour ce qu'ils devaient faire, et étant protégés par les rangs.
As for the remnant of the horsemen, they set them on this side and that side at the two parts of the host giving them signs what to do, and being harnessed all over amidst the ranks.
Or, quand le soleil brilla sur les boucliers d'or et d'airain, les montagnes en resplendirent et brillèrent comme des lampes de feu.
Now when the sun shone upon the shields of gold and brass, the mountains glistered therewith, and shined like lamps of fire.
Ainsi une partie de l'armée du roi s'étant déployée sur les hautes montagnes, et une autre partie dans les vallées au-dessous, ils marchèrent avec assurance et en bon ordre.
So part of the king’s army being spread upon the high mountains, and part on the valleys below, they marched on safely and in order.
C'est pourquoi tous ceux qui entendirent le bruit de leur multitude, la marche de la troupe et le cliquetis des armes, furent émus : car l'armée était fort grande et puissante.
Wherefore all that heard the noise of their multitude, and the marching of the company, and the rattling of the harness, were moved: for the army was very great and mighty.
Alors Judas et son armée s'approchèrent et engagèrent le combat, et il tomba de l'armée du roi six cents hommes.
Then Judas and his host drew near, and entered into battle, and there were slain of the king’s army six hundred men.
Éléazar aussi, surnommé Savaran, s'apercevant que l'une des bêtes, armée d'un harnais royal, était plus haute que toutes les autres, et supposant que le roi était sur elle,
Eleazar also, surnamed Savaran, perceiving that one of the beasts, armed with royal harness, was higher than all the rest, and supposing that the king was upon him,
Il s'exposa au péril afin de délivrer son peuple et de se faire un nom perpétuel :
Put himself in jeopardy, to the end he might deliver his people, and get him a perpetual name:
C'est pourquoi il courut vers elle courageusement à travers le milieu de la bataille, tuant à droite et à gauche, de sorte qu'ils s'écartaient devant lui des deux côtés.
Wherefore he ran upon him courageously through the midst of the battle, slaying on the right hand and on the left, so that they were divided from him on both sides.
Cela fait, il se glissa sous l'éléphant, le frappa par-dessous et le tua : sur quoi l'éléphant tomba sur lui, et il mourut là.
Which done, he crept under the elephant, and thrust him under, and slew him: whereupon the elephant fell down upon him, and there he died.
Toutefois, le reste des Juifs, voyant la force du roi et la violence de ses troupes, se détourna d'eux.
Howbeit the rest of the Jews seeing the strength of the king, and the violence of his forces, turned away from them.
Alors l'armée du roi monta à Jérusalem à leur rencontre, et le roi dressa ses tentes contre la Judée et contre la montagne de Sion.
Then the king’s army went up to Jerusalem to meet them, and the king pitched his tents against Judea, and against mount Sion.
Mais il fit la paix avec ceux qui étaient à Bethsura : car ils sortirent de la ville, parce qu'ils n'y avaient point de vivres pour soutenir le siège, c'était une année de repos pour la terre.
But with them that were in Bethsura he made peace: for they came out of the city, because they had no victuals there to endure the siege, it being a year of rest to the land.
Ainsi le roi prit Bethsura et y mit une garnison pour la garder.
So the king took Bethsura, and set a garrison there to keep it.
Quant au sanctuaire, il l'assiégea plusieurs jours : et il y plaça de l'artillerie avec des machines et des engins pour lancer le feu et les pierres, et des pièces pour lancer des dards et des frondes.
As for the sanctuary, he besieged it many days: and set there artillery with engines and instruments to cast fire and stones, and pieces to cast darts and slings.
Sur quoi ils firent aussi des machines contre leurs machines, et soutinrent le combat pendant longtemps.
Whereupon they also made engines against their engines, and held them battle a long season.
Pourtant, à la fin, leurs provisions manquant (car c'était la septième année, et ceux qui en Judée avaient été délivrés des Gentils avaient consommé le reste des réserves) ;
Yet at the last, their vessels being without victuals, (for that it was the seventh year, and they in Judea that were delivered from the Gentiles, had eaten up the residue of the store;)
Il n'en resta que peu dans le sanctuaire, parce que la famine prévalut tellement contre eux qu'ils furent contraints de se disperser, chacun en son lieu.
There were but a few left in the sanctuary, because the famine did so prevail against them, that they were fain to disperse themselves, every man to his own place.
En ce temps-là, Lysias apprit que Philippe, que le roi Antiochus, de son vivant, avait établi pour élever son fils Antiochus afin qu'il fût roi,
At that time Lysias heard say, that Philip, whom Antiochus the king, whiles he lived, had appointed to bring up his son Antiochus, that he might be king,
Était revenu de Perse et de Médie, ainsi que l'armée du roi qui était allée avec lui, et qu'il cherchait à prendre en main la direction des affaires.
Was returned out of Persia and Media, and the king’s host also that went with him, and that he sought to take unto him the ruling of the affairs.
C'est pourquoi il partit en toute hâte et dit au roi, aux capitaines de l'armée et à la troupe : Nous dépérissons chaque jour, nos vivres sont peu de chose, le lieu que nous assiégeons est fort, et les affaires du royaume reposent sur nous :
Wherefore he went in all haste, and said to the king and the captains of the host and the company, We decay daily, and our victuals are but small, and the place we lay siege unto is strong, and the affairs of the kingdom lie upon us:
Maintenant donc, soyons amis avec ces hommes, et faisons la paix avec eux et avec toute leur nation ;
Now therefore let us be friends with these men, and make peace with them, and with all their nation;
Et convenons avec eux qu'ils vivront selon leurs lois, comme ils le faisaient auparavant : car c'est pour cela qu'ils sont mécontents et qu'ils ont fait toutes ces choses, parce que nous avons aboli leurs lois.
And covenant with them, that they shall live after their laws, as they did before: for they are therefore displeased, and have done all these things, because we abolished their laws.
Ainsi le roi et les princes furent satisfaits : c'est pourquoi il leur envoya des propositions de paix, et ils les acceptèrent.
So the king and the princes were content: wherefore he sent unto them to make peace; and they accepted thereof.
Le roi aussi et les princes leur firent serment : sur quoi ils sortirent de la place forte.
Also the king and the princes made an oath unto them: whereupon they went out of the strong hold.
Alors le roi entra dans la montagne de Sion ; mais quand il vit la force du lieu, il rompit le serment qu'il avait fait, et donna l'ordre d'abattre le mur tout autour.
Then the king entered into mount Sion; but when he saw the strength of the place, he broke his oath that he had made, and gave commandment to pull down the wall round about.
Ensuite il partit en toute hâte et retourna à Antioche, où il trouva Philippe maître de la ville : il combattit donc contre lui et prit la ville par force.
Afterward departed he in all haste, and returned unto Antiochia, where he found Philip to be master of the city: so he fought against him, and took the city by force.
En l'an cent cinquante et un, Démétrius, fils de Séleucus, partit de Rome et monta avec quelques hommes vers une ville de la côte maritime, et y régna.
In the hundred and one and fiftieth year Demetrius the son of Seleucus departed from Rome, and came up with a few men unto a city of the sea coast, and reigned there.
Et comme il entrait dans le palais de ses ancêtres, il advint que ses troupes s'emparèrent d'Antiochus et de Lysias pour les lui amener.
And as he entered into the palace of his ancestors, so it was, that his forces had taken Antiochus and Lysias, to bring them unto him.
C'est pourquoi, quand il le sut, il dit : Que je ne voie point leurs visages.
Wherefore, when he knew it, he said, Let me not see their faces.
Ainsi son armée les tua. Or, quand Démétrius fut assis sur le trône de son royaume,
So his host slew them. Now when Demetrius was set upon the throne of his kingdom,
Tous les hommes méchants et impies d'Israël vinrent à lui, ayant pour chef Alcime, qui désirait être souverain prêtre :
There came unto him all the wicked and ungodly men of Israel, having Alcimus, who was desirous to be high priest, for their captain:
Et ils accusèrent le peuple devant le roi, disant : Judas et ses frères ont tué tous tes amis, et nous ont chassés de notre propre pays.
And they accused the people to the king, saying, Judas and his brethren have slain all thy friends, and driven us out of our own land.
Maintenant donc, envoie quelque homme en qui tu as confiance, et qu'il aille voir quel ravage il a fait parmi nous et dans le pays du roi, et qu'il les punisse avec tous ceux qui les aident.
Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest, and let him go and see what havock he hath made among us, and in the king’s land, and let him punish them with all them that aid them.
Alors le roi choisit Bacchidès, un ami du roi, qui gouvernait au-delà du fleuve, et qui était un grand homme dans le royaume et fidèle au roi,
Then the king chose Bacchides, a friend of the king, who ruled beyond the flood, and was a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king,
Et il l'envoya avec ce méchant Alcime, qu'il établit souverain prêtre, et lui commanda de tirer vengeance des enfants d'Israël.
And him he sent with that wicked Alcimus, whom he made high priest, and commanded that he should take vengeance of the children of Israel.
Ils partirent donc et vinrent avec une grande puissance au pays de Judée, où ils envoyèrent des messagers à Judas et à ses frères avec des paroles de paix trompeuses.
So they departed, and came with a great power into the land of Judea, where they sent messengers to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully.
Mais ils ne prêtèrent aucune attention à leurs paroles ; car ils voyaient qu'ils étaient venus avec une grande puissance.
But they gave no heed to their words; for they saw that they were come with a great power.
Alors une troupe de scribes s'assembla auprès d'Alcime et de Bacchidès pour demander justice.
Then did there assemble unto Alcimus and Bacchides a company of scribes, to require justice.
Or, les Assidéens furent les premiers parmi les enfants d'Israël qui cherchèrent la paix auprès d'eux :
Now the Assideans were the first among the children of Israel that sought peace of them:
Car ils disaient : Un homme qui est prêtre de la race d'Aaron est venu avec cette armée, et il ne nous fera aucun tort.
For said they, One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come with this army, and he will do us no wrong.
Il leur parla donc avec des paroles de paix et leur jura, disant : Nous ne chercherons à faire de mal ni à vous ni à vos amis.
So he spake unto them, peaceably, and sware unto them, saying, we will procure the harm neither of you nor your friends.
Sur quoi ils le crurent : toutefois il se saisit de soixante hommes d'entre eux et les tua en un seul jour, selon les paroles qu'il est écrit :
Whereupon they believed him: howbeit he took of them threescore men, and slew them in one day, according to the words which he wrote,
Ils ont jeté la chair de tes saints et ont répandu leur sang autour de Jérusalem, et il n'y avait personne pour les ensevelir.
The flesh of thy saints have they cast out, and their blood have they shed round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.
C'est pourquoi la crainte et l'effroi tombèrent sur tout le peuple, qui disait : Il n'y a en eux ni vérité ni justice ; car ils ont rompu l'alliance et le serment qu'ils avaient faits.
Wherefore the fear and dread of them fell upon all the people, who said, There is neither truth nor righteousness in them; for they have broken the covenant and oath that they made.
Après cela, Bacchidès partit de Jérusalem et campa à Bezeth, d'où il envoya prendre plusieurs des hommes qui l'avaient abandonné, et certains du peuple aussi, et après les avoir tués, il les jeta dans la grande fosse.
After this, removed Bacchides from Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bezeth, where he sent and took many of the men that had forsaken him, and certain of the people also, and when he had slain them, he cast them into the great pit.
Alors il remit le pays à Alcime et laissa avec lui une force pour l'aider : ainsi Bacchidès s'en alla vers le roi.
Then committed he the country to Alcimus, and left with him a power to aid him: so Bacchides went to the king.
Mais Alcime luttait pour le souverain sacerdoce.
But Alcimus contended for the high priesthood.
Et tous ceux qui troublaient le peuple se rallièrent à lui, et après s'être emparés du pays de Juda, ils firent beaucoup de mal en Israël.
And unto him resorted all such as troubled the people, who, after they had gotten the land of Juda into their power, did much hurt in Israel.
Or, quand Judas vit tout le mal qu'Alcime et sa troupe avaient fait parmi les Israélites, plus encore que les païens,
Now when Judas saw all the mischief that Alcimus and his company had done among the Israelites, even above the heathen,
Il parcourut toutes les frontières de la Judée tout autour, et tira vengeance de ceux qui s'étaient révoltés contre lui, de sorte qu'ils n'osèrent plus sortir dans le pays.
He went out into all the coasts of Judea round about, and took vengeance of them that had revolted from him, so that they durst no more go forth into the country.
D'un autre côté, quand Alcime vit que Judas et sa troupe avaient pris le dessus, et sachant qu'il n'était pas capable de résister à leur force, il retourna vers le roi et dit d'eux tout le mal qu'il put.
On the other side, when Alcimus saw that Judas and his company had gotten the upper hand, and knew that he was not able to abide their force, he went again to the king, and said all the worst of them that he could.
Alors le roi envoya Nicanor, l'un de ses princes honorables, un homme qui portait une haine mortelle à Israël, avec l'ordre de détruire le peuple.
Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his honourable princes, a man that bare deadly hate unto Israel, with commandment to destroy the people.
Nicanor vint donc à Jérusalem avec une grande force ; et il envoya vers Judas et ses frères des paroles amicales et trompeuses, disant :
So Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great force; and sent unto Judas and his brethren deceitfully with friendly words, saying,
Qu'il n'y ait point de combat entre moi et vous ; je viendrai avec peu d'hommes, afin de vous voir en paix.
Let there be no battle between me and you; I will come with a few men, that I may see you in peace.
Il vint donc vers Judas, et ils se saluèrent l'un l'autre paisiblement. Toutefois les ennemis étaient prêts à enlever Judas par violence.
He came therefore to Judas, and they saluted one another peaceably. Howbeit the enemies were prepared to take away Judas by violence.
Ce que Judas ayant connu, à savoir qu'il était venu vers lui avec tromperie, il eut grand-peur de lui et ne voulut plus voir son visage.
Which thing after it was known to Judas, to wit, that he came unto him with deceit, he was sore afraid of him, and would see his face no more.
Nicanor aussi, voyant que son dessein était découvert, sortit pour combattre contre Judas près de Capharsalama :
Nicanor also, when he saw that his counsel was discovered, went out to fight against Judas beside Capharsalama:
Où environ cinq mille hommes du côté de Nicanor furent tués, et le reste s'enfuit dans la cité de David.
Where there were slain of Nicanor’s side about five thousand men, and the rest fled into the city of David.
Après cela, Nicanor monta à la montagne de Sion, et certains des prêtres et certains des anciens du peuple sortirent du sanctuaire pour le saluer paisiblement et pour lui montrer l'holocauste qui était offert pour le roi.
After this went Nicanor up to mount Sion, and there came out of the sanctuary certain of the priests and certain of the elders of the people, to salute him peaceably, and to shew him the burnt sacrifice that was offered for the king.
Mais il se moqua d'eux, se rit d'eux, les outragea honteusement et parla avec orgueil,
But he mocked them, and laughed at them, and abused them shamefully, and spake proudly,
Et il jura dans sa colère, disant : Si Judas et son armée ne sont pas maintenant livrés entre mes mains, si jamais je reviens en sûreté, je brûlerai cette maison : et il sortit dans une grande fureur.
And sware in his wrath, saying, Unless Judas and his host be now delivered into my hands, if ever I come again in safety, I will burn up this house: and with that he went out in a great rage.
Alors les prêtres entrèrent et se tinrent devant l'autel et le temple, pleurant et disant :
Then the priests entered in, and stood before the altar and the temple, weeping, and saying,
Toi, Seigneur, tu as choisi cette maison pour être appelée de ton nom, et pour être une maison de prière et de supplication pour ton peuple :
Thou, O Lord, didst choose this house to be called by thy name, and to be a house of prayer and petition for thy people:
Venge-toi de cet homme et de son armée, et qu'ils tombent par l'épée : souviens-toi de leurs blasphèmes, et ne leur permets pas de subsister plus longtemps.
Be avenged of this man and his host, and let them fall by the sword: remember their blasphemies, and suffer them not to continue any longer.
Nicanor sortit donc de Jérusalem et campa à Beth-Horon, où une armée de Syrie vint à sa rencontre.
So Nicanor went out of Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bethhoron, where an host out of Syria met him.
Mais Judas campa à Adasa avec trois mille hommes, et là il pria, disant :
But Judas pitched in Adasa with three thousand men, and there he prayed, saying,
Seigneur, quand ceux qui furent envoyés par le roi des Assyriens blasphémèrent, ton ange sortit et en frappa cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille.
O Lord, when they that were sent from the king of the Assyrians blasphemed, thine angel went out, and smote an hundred fourscore and five thousand of them.
Détruis de même cette armée devant nous en ce jour, afin que les autres sachent qu'il a parlé blasphématoirement contre ton sanctuaire, et juge-le selon sa méchanceté.
Even so destroy thou this host before us this day, that the rest may know that he hath spoken blasphemously against thy sanctuary, and judge thou him according to his wickedness.
Ainsi, le treizième jour du mois d'Adar, les armées engagèrent le combat : mais l'armée de Nicanor fut défaite, et lui-même fut le premier tué dans la bataille.
So the thirteenth day of the month Adar the hosts joined battle: but Nicanor’s host was discomfited, and he himself was first slain in the battle.
Or, quand l'armée de Nicanor vit qu'il était tué, ils jetèrent leurs armes et s'enfuirent.
Now when Nicanor’s host saw that he was slain, they cast away their weapons, and fled.
Alors ils les poursuivirent la valeur d'une journée, depuis Adasa jusqu'à Gazera, sonnant l'alarme après eux avec leurs trompettes.
Then they pursued after them a day’s journey, from Adasa unto Gazera, sounding an alarm after them with their trumpets.
Sur quoi ils sortirent de toutes les villes de la Judée tout autour et les enveloppèrent ; de sorte que ceux-ci, se retournant contre ceux qui les poursuivaient, furent tous tués par l'épée, et il n'en resta pas un seul.
Whereupon they came forth out of all the towns of Judea round about, and closed them in; so that they, turning back upon them that pursued them, were all slain with the sword, and not one of them was left.
Ensuite ils prirent les dépouilles et le butin, coupèrent la tête de Nicanor et sa main droite qu'il avait étendue avec tant d'orgueil, les emportèrent et les suspendirent du côté de Jérusalem.
Afterwards they took the spoils, and the prey, and smote off Nicanors head, and his right hand, which he stretched out so proudly, and brought them away, and hanged them up toward Jerusalem.
Pour cette cause, le peuple se réjouit grandement, et ils célébrèrent ce jour comme un jour de grande allégresse.
For this cause the people rejoiced greatly, and they kept that day a day of great gladness.
De plus, ils ordonnèrent de célébrer chaque année ce jour, qui est le treizième d'Adar.
Moreover they ordained to keep yearly this day, being the thirteenth of Adar.
Ainsi le pays de Juda fut en repos pendant un peu de temps.
Thus the land of Juda was in rest a little while.
Or, Judas avait entendu parler des Romains, qu'ils étaient des hommes puissants et vaillants, et tels qu'ils accueillaient avec bienveillance tous ceux qui se joignaient à eux, et faisaient alliance d'amitié avec tous ceux qui venaient à eux ;
Now Judas had heard of the the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them;
Et qu'ils étaient des hommes d'une grande valeur. On lui raconta aussi leurs guerres et les nobles actions qu'ils avaient accomplies parmi les Galates, et comment ils les avaient conquis et rendus tributaires ;
And that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute;
Et ce qu'ils avaient fait au pays d'Espagne pour la conquête des mines d'argent et d'or qui s'y trouvent ;
And what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there;
Et que par leur prudence et leur patience ils avaient conquis tout le pays, bien qu'il fût fort éloigné d'eux ; et aussi les rois qui étaient venus contre eux des extrémités de la terre, jusqu'à ce qu'ils les eussent défaits et leur eussent infligé une grande défaite, de sorte que les autres leur payaient un tribut chaque année :
And that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year:
Outre cela, comment ils avaient défait en bataille Philippe, et Persée, roi des Kittim, avec d'autres qui s'étaient élevés contre eux, et les avaient vaincus :
Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them:
Comment aussi Antiochus, le grand roi d'Asie, qui était venu contre eux en bataille, ayant cent vingt éléphants, avec de la cavalerie, des chars et une très grande armée, fut défait par eux ;
How also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them;
Et comment ils le prirent vivant, et convinrent que lui et ceux qui régneraient après lui paieraient un grand tribut, donneraient des otages et ce qui avait été convenu,
And how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,
Et le pays de l'Inde, de la Médie et de la Lydie, et les meilleures de ses provinces, qu'ils lui prirent et donnèrent au roi Eumène :
And the country of India, and Media and Lydia and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes:
De plus, comment les Grecs avaient résolu de venir les détruire ;
Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them;
Et qu'eux, en ayant connaissance, envoyèrent contre eux un certain capitaine, et combattant contre eux en tuèrent beaucoup, emmenèrent captives leurs femmes et leurs enfants, les pillèrent, prirent possession de leurs terres, abattirent leurs forteresses et les réduisirent en servitude jusqu'à ce jour :
And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:
On lui raconta aussi comment ils détruisirent et soumirent à leur domination tous les autres royaumes et les îles qui, en quelque temps que ce fût, leur avaient résisté ;
It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them;
Mais avec leurs amis et ceux qui s'appuyaient sur eux, ils gardèrent l'amitié : et qu'ils avaient conquis des royaumes tant lointains que proches, de sorte que tous ceux qui entendaient leur nom avaient peur d'eux :
But with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them:
Et aussi que ceux qu'ils veulent aider à régner, règnent ; et que ceux qu'ils veulent, ils les déposent : enfin, qu'ils étaient grandement exaltés :
Also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted:
Pourtant, malgré tout cela, aucun d'eux ne portait le diadème ni n'était vêtu de pourpre pour en tirer gloire :
Yet for all this none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby:
De plus, comment ils s'étaient fait un sénat, où trois cent vingt hommes siégeaient en conseil chaque jour, consultant toujours pour le peuple, afin qu'il fût bien gouverné :
Moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered:
Et qu'ils confiaient leur gouvernement à un seul homme chaque année, qui régnait sur tout leur pays, et que tous obéissaient à ce seul homme, et qu'il n'y avait parmi eux ni envie ni émulation.
And that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emulation among them.
En considération de ces choses, Judas choisit Eupolème, fils de Jean, fils d'Accos, et Jason, fils d'Éléazar, et les envoya à Rome pour faire avec eux alliance d'amitié et de confédération,
In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them,
Et pour les prier de leur ôter le joug ; car ils voyaient que le royaume des Grecs opprimait Israël par la servitude.
And to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude.
Ils allèrent donc à Rome, ce qui était un fort long voyage, et entrèrent au sénat, où ils prirent la parole et dirent :
They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said.
Judas Macchabée avec ses frères et le peuple des Juifs nous ont envoyés vers vous pour faire alliance et paix avec vous, et afin que nous soyons inscrits comme vos confédérés et vos amis.
Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends.
Cette chose plut aux Romains.
So that matter pleased the Romans well.
Et voici la copie de la lettre que le sénat écrivit en réponse sur des tables d'airain, et envoya à Jérusalem, afin qu'ils y eussent un mémorial de paix et d'alliance :
And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy:
Que le bonheur soit aux Romains et au peuple des Juifs, sur mer et sur terre, pour toujours : que l'épée et l'ennemi soient aussi loin d'eux.
Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them,
S'il survient d'abord quelque guerre aux Romains ou à l'un de leurs confédérés dans toute leur domination,
If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion,
Le peuple des Juifs les aidera, selon que le temps le prescrira, de tout son cœur :
The people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart:
Et ils ne donneront rien à ceux qui leur font la guerre, ni ne les aideront de vivres, d'armes, d'argent ou de navires, selon qu'il a semblé bon aux Romains ; mais ils garderont leurs engagements sans rien recevoir pour cela.
Neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore.
De la même manière aussi, si la guerre vient d'abord sur la nation des Juifs, les Romains les aideront de tout leur cœur, selon que le temps leur sera prescrit :
In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them:
Et il ne sera point donné de vivres à ceux qui prennent parti contre eux, ni d'armes, ni d'argent, ni de navires, selon qu'il a semblé bon aux Romains ; mais ils garderont leurs engagements, et cela sans tromperie.
Neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit.
Selon ces articles, les Romains firent alliance avec le peuple des Juifs.
According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews.
Toutefois, si par la suite l'une ou l'autre partie juge à propos d'ajouter ou de retrancher quelque chose, ils pourront le faire à leur gré, et tout ce qu'ils ajouteront ou retrancheront sera ratifié.
Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think to meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified.
Et quant aux maux que Démétrius fait aux Juifs, nous lui avons écrit, disant : Pourquoi as-tu rendu ton joug pesant sur nos amis et confédérés les Juifs ?
And as touching the evils that Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews?
Si donc ils se plaignent encore de toi, nous leur ferons justice et nous combattrons contre toi par mer et par terre.
If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land.
En outre, quand Démétrius apprit que Nicanor et son armée avaient été tués au combat, il envoya Bacchidès et Alcime au pays de Judée une seconde fois, et avec eux l'élite de son armée :
Furthermore, when Demetrius heard the Nicanor and his host were slain in battle, he sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judea the second time, and with them the chief strength of his host:
Ils s'en allèrent par le chemin qui mène à Galgala, et campèrent devant Masaloth qui est à Arbèles, et après s'en être emparés, ils tuèrent beaucoup de monde.
Who went forth by the way that leadeth to Galgala, and pitched their tents before Masaloth, which is in Arbela, and after they had won it, they slew much people.
Aussi, au premier mois de l'an cent cinquante-deux, ils campèrent devant Jérusalem :
Also the first month of the hundred fifty and second year they encamped before Jerusalem:
De là, ils partirent et allèrent à Bérée avec vingt mille hommes de pied et deux mille cavaliers.
From whence they removed, and went to Berea, with twenty thousand footmen and two thousand horsemen.
Or, Judas avait campé à Éléasa, et trois mille hommes d'élite avec lui :
Now Judas had pitched his tents at Eleasa, and three thousand chosen men with him:
Ceux-ci, voyant que la multitude de l'autre armée était si grande, furent saisis d'une grande crainte ; sur quoi beaucoup s'esquivèrent de l'armée, de sorte qu'il n'en resta plus que huit cents hommes.
Who seeing the multitude of the other army to he so great were sore afraid; whereupon many conveyed themselves out of the host, insomuch as abode of them no more but eight hundred men.
Quand Judas vit donc que son armée s'écoulait et que la bataille le pressait, il fut fort troublé en son esprit et fort angoissé, parce qu'il n'avait pas le temps de les rassembler.
When Judas therefore saw that his host slipt away, and that the battle pressed upon him, he was sore troubled in mind, and much distressed, for that he had no time to gather them together.
Néanmoins, il dit à ceux qui restaient : Levons-nous et montons contre nos ennemis, si peut-être nous sommes capables de combattre contre eux.
Nevertheless unto them that remained he said, Let us arise and go up against our enemies, if peradventure we may be able to fight with them.
Mais ils l'en détournaient, disant : Nous ne le pourrons jamais : sauvons plutôt nos vies maintenant, et plus tard nous reviendrons avec nos frères et nous combattrons contre eux : car nous sommes peu nombreux.
But they dehorted him, saying, We shall never be able: let us now rather save our lives, and hereafter we will return with our brethren, and fight against them: for we are but few.
Alors Judas dit : À Dieu ne plaise que je fasse une telle chose et que je fuie devant eux : si notre temps est venu, mourons vaillamment pour nos frères, et ne tachons pas notre honneur.
Then Judas said, God forbid that I should do this thing, and flee away from them: if our time be come, let us die manfully for our brethren, and let us not stain our honour.
Sur quoi l'armée de Bacchidès sortit de ses tentes et se tint vis-à-vis d'eux, leur cavalerie étant divisée en deux corps, et leurs frondeurs et leurs archers marchant devant l'armée, et tous ceux qui étaient au premier rang étaient des hommes puissants.
With that the host of Bacchides removed out of their tents, and stood over against them, their horsemen being divided into two troops, and their slingers and archers going before the host and they that marched in the foreward were all mighty men.
Quant à Bacchidès, il était à l'aile droite : ainsi l'armée s'approcha des deux côtés et sonna des trompettes.
As for Bacchides, he was in the right wing: so the host drew near on the two parts, and sounded their trumpets.
Ceux du côté de Judas sonnèrent aussi de leurs trompettes, de sorte que la terre trembla au bruit des armées, et le combat dura depuis le matin jusqu'au soir.
They also of Judas’ side, even they sounded their trumpets also, so that the earth shook at the noise of the armies, and the battle continued from morning till night.
Or, quand Judas s'aperçut que Bacchidès et la force de son armée étaient du côté droit, il prit avec lui tous les hommes de cœur,
Now when Judas perceived that Bacchides and the strength of his army were on the right side, he took with him all the hardy men,
Qui défirent l'aile droite et la poursuivirent jusqu'à la montagne d'Azot.
Who discomfited the right wing, and pursued them unto the mount Azotus.
Mais quand ceux de l'aile gauche virent que ceux de l'aile droite étaient défaits, ils suivirent Judas et ceux qui étaient avec lui, les serrant de près par-derrière :
But when they of the left wing saw that they of the right wing were discomfited, they followed upon Judas and those that were with him hard at the heels from behind:
Sur quoi il y eut un rude combat, de sorte que beaucoup furent tués de part et d'autre.
Whereupon there was a sore battle, insomuch as many were slain on both parts.
Judas aussi fut tué, et le reste s'enfuit.
Judas also was killed, and the remnant fled.
Alors Jonathan et Simon prirent Judas leur frère et l'ensevelirent dans le sépulcre de ses pères à Modin.
Then Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother, and buried him in the sepulchre of his fathers in Modin.
De plus, ils le pleurèrent, et tout Israël fit sur lui une grande lamentation et fut en deuil pendant plusieurs jours, disant :
Moreover they bewailed him, and all Israel made great lamentation for him, and mourned many days, saying,
Comment est tombé le vaillant homme qui délivrait Israël !
How is the valiant man fallen, that delivered Israel!
Quant aux autres choses concernant Judas, ses guerres, les nobles actions qu'il a faites et sa grandeur, elles ne sont pas écrites, car elles furent très nombreuses.
As for the other things concerning Judas and his wars, and the noble acts which he did, and his greatness, they are not written: for they were very many.
Or, après la mort de Judas, les méchants commencèrent à lever la tête sur toutes les frontières d'Israël, et l'on vit paraître tous ceux qui commettaient l'iniquité.
Now after the death of Judas the wicked began to put forth their heads in all the coasts of Israel, and there arose up all such as wrought iniquity.
En ces jours-là aussi, il y eut une très grande famine, à cause de laquelle le pays se révolta et se joignit à eux.
In those days also was there a very great famine, by reason whereof the country revolted, and went with them.
Alors Bacchidès choisit des hommes impies et les établit seigneurs du pays.
Then Bacchides chose the wicked men, and made them lords of the country.
Et ils firent des enquêtes et des recherches pour trouver les amis de Judas, et les amenèrent à Bacchidès, qui tira vengeance d'eux et les traita avec mépris.
And they made enquiry and search for Judas’ friends, and brought them unto Bacchides, who took vengeance of them, and used them despitefully.
Ainsi, il y eut une grande affliction en Israël, telle qu'il n'y en avait pas eu depuis le temps qu'on ne voyait plus de prophète parmi eux.
So was there a great affliction in Israel, the like whereof was not since the time that a prophet was not seen among them.
C'est pourquoi tous les amis de Judas s'assemblèrent et dirent à Jonathan :
For this cause all Judas’ friends came together, and said unto Jonathan,
Depuis que ton frère Judas est mort, nous n'avons aucun homme semblable à lui pour marcher contre nos ennemis et contre Bacchidès, et contre ceux de notre nation qui nous sont adversaires.
Since thy brother Judas died, we have no man like him to go forth against our enemies, and Bacchides, and against them of our nation that are adversaries to us.
Maintenant donc, nous t'avons choisi aujourd'hui pour être notre prince et notre capitaine à sa place, afin que tu conduises nos combats.
Now therefore we have chosen thee this day to be our prince and captain in his stead, that thou mayest fight our battles.
Sur quoi Jonathan prit le gouvernement en ce temps-là, et se leva à la place de son frère Judas.
Upon this Jonathan took the governance upon him at that time, and rose up instead of his brother Judas.
Mais quand Bacchidès en eut connaissance, il chercha à le tuer.
But when Bacchides gat knowledge thereof, he sought for to slay him
Alors Jonathan, Simon son frère et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, s'en étant aperçus, s'enfuirent dans le désert de Thécué et campèrent près des eaux du puits d'Asphar.
Then Jonathan, and Simon his brother, and all that were with him, perceiving that, fled into the wilderness of Thecoe, and pitched their tents by the water of the pool Asphar.
Ce que Bacchidès ayant appris, il s'approcha du Jourdain avec toute son armée le jour du sabbat.
Which when Bacchides understood, he came near to Jordan with all his host upon the sabbath day.
Or, Jonathan avait envoyé son frère Jean, capitaine du peuple, prier ses amis les Nabatéens de leur laisser en garde leur bagage, qui était considérable.
Now Jonathan had sent his brother John, a captain of the people, to pray his friends the Nabathites, that they might leave with them their carriage, which was much.
Mais les fils de Jambri sortirent de Médaba, se saisirent de Jean et de tout ce qu'il avait, et s'en allèrent avec cela.
But the children of Jambri came out of Medaba, and took John, and all that he had, and went their way with it.
Après cela, on vint dire à Jonathan et à Simon son frère que les fils de Jambri célébraient un grand mariage, et qu'ils amenaient la mariée de Nadabatha avec un grand cortège, car elle était la fille d'un des grands princes de Canaan.
After this came word to Jonathan and Simon his brother, that the children of Jambri made a great marriage, and were bringing the bride from Nadabatha with a great train, as being the daughter of one of the great princes of Chanaan.
C'est pourquoi ils se souvinrent de Jean leur frère, et ils montèrent et se cachèrent sous le couvert de la montagne :
Therefore they remembered John their brother, and went up, and hid themselves under the covert of the mountain:
Où ils levèrent les yeux et regardèrent, et voici, il y avait un grand tumulte et un grand équipage : et l'époux sortit avec ses amis et ses frères pour les rencontrer, avec des tambours, des instruments de musique et beaucoup d'armes.
Where they lifted up their eyes, and looked, and, behold, there was much ado and great carriage: and the bridegroom came forth, and his friends and brethren, to meet them with drums, and instruments of musick, and many weapons.
Alors Jonathan et ceux qui étaient avec lui se levèrent contre eux du lieu où ils étaient en embuscade, et en firent un tel carnage que beaucoup tombèrent morts, et le reste s'enfuit dans la montagne, et ils prirent toutes leurs dépouilles.
Then Jonathan and they that were with him rose up against them from the place where they lay in ambush, and made a slaughter of them in such sort, as many fell down dead, and the remnant fled into the mountain, and they took all their spoils.
Ainsi le mariage fut changé en deuil, et le bruit de leur mélodie en lamentation.
Thus was the marriage turned into mourning, and the noise of their melody into lamentation.
Ainsi, quand ils eurent pleinement vengé le sang de leur frère, ils s'en retournèrent vers les marais du Jourdain.
So when they had avenged fully the blood of their brother, they turned again to the marsh of Jordan.
Or, quand Bacchidès apprit cela, il vint au jour du sabbat sur les bords du Jourdain avec une grande puissance.
Now when Bacchides heard hereof, he came on the sabbath day unto the banks of Jordan with a great power.
Alors Jonathan dit à sa troupe : Levons-nous maintenant et combattons pour nos vies, car il n'en est pas de nous aujourd'hui comme par le passé :
Then Jonathan said to his company, Let us go up now and fight for our lives, for it standeth not with us to day, as in time past:
Car voici, le combat est devant nous et derrière nous, et les eaux du Jourdain de ce côté et de celui-là, le marais aussi et le bois, et il n'y a point de lieu pour nous détourner.
For, behold, the battle is before us and behind us, and the water of Jordan on this side and that side, the marsh likewise and wood, neither is there place for us to turn aside.
C'est pourquoi, criez maintenant vers le ciel, afin que vous soyez délivrés de la main de vos ennemis.
Wherefore cry ye now unto heaven, that ye may be delivered from the hand of your enemies.
Sur quoi ils engagèrent le combat, et Jonathan étendit sa main pour frapper Bacchidès, mais celui-ci se retira en arrière de lui.
With that they joined battle, and Jonathan stretched forth his hand to smite Bacchides, but he turned back from him.
Alors Jonathan et ceux qui étaient avec lui sautèrent dans le Jourdain et traversèrent à la nage jusqu'à l'autre rive : toutefois les autres ne passèrent point le Jourdain vers eux.
Then Jonathan and they that were with him leapt into Jordan, and swam over unto the other bank: howbeit the other passed not over Jordan unto them.
Ainsi, environ mille hommes du côté de Bacchidès furent tués ce jour-là.
So there were slain of Bacchides’ side that day about a thousand men.
Ensuite Bacchidès retourna à Jérusalem et répara les villes fortes de Judée ; la forteresse de Jéricho, Emmaüs, Beth-Horon, Béthel, Thamnatha, Pharathoni et Taphon, il les fortifia de hautes murailles, de portes et de barres.
Afterward returned Bacchides to Jerusalem and repaired the strong cites in Judea; the fort in Jericho, and Emmaus, and Bethhoron, and Bethel, and Thamnatha, Pharathoni, and Taphon, these did he strengthen with high walls, with gates and with bars.
Et il y mit une garnison afin qu'ils pussent nuire à Israël.
And in them he set a garrison, that they might work malice upon Israel.
Il fortifia aussi la ville de Bethsura, Gazera et la citadelle, et y mit des troupes et des provisions de vivres.
He fortified also the city Bethsura, and Gazera, and the tower, and put forces in them, and provision of victuals.
De plus, il prit les fils des principaux hommes du pays pour otages, et les mit dans la citadelle à Jérusalem pour y être gardés.
Besides, he took the chief men’s sons in the country for hostages, and put them into the tower at Jerusalem to be kept.
En outre, en l'an cent cinquante-trois, au second mois, Alcime ordonna que le mur du parvis intérieur du sanctuaire fût abattu ; il abattit aussi les ouvrages des prophètes.
Moreover in the hundred fifty and third year, in the second month, Alcimus commanded that the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary should be pulled down; he pulled down also the works of the prophets
Et comme il commençait à abattre, en ce temps même Alcime fut frappé et ses entreprises furent entravées : car sa bouche fut fermée et il fut atteint de paralysie, de sorte qu'il ne pouvait plus rien dire ni donner d'ordre concernant sa maison.
And as he began to pull down, even at that time was Alcimus plagued, and his enterprizes hindered: for his mouth was stopped, and he was taken with a palsy, so that he could no more speak any thing, nor give order concerning his house.
Ainsi Alcime mourut en ce temps-là dans de grands tourments.
So Alcimus died at that time with great torment.
Or, quand Bacchidès vit qu'Alcime était mort, il retourna vers le roi : sur quoi le pays de Judée fut en repos pendant deux ans.
Now when Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead, he returned to the king: whereupon the land of Judea was in rest two years.
Alors tous les hommes impies tinrent conseil, disant : Voici, Jonathan et sa troupe sont en repos et vivent sans souci : maintenant donc, amenons ici Bacchidès, qui les saisira tous en une seule nuit.
Then all the ungodly men held a council, saying, Behold, Jonathan and his company are at ease, and dwell without care: now therefore we will bring Bacchides hither, who shall take them all in one night.
Ils allèrent donc et consultèrent avec lui.
So they went and consulted with him.
Alors il partit et vint avec une grande armée, et envoya secrètement des lettres à ses partisans en Judée, afin qu'ils se saisissent de Jonathan et de ceux qui étaient avec lui : toutefois ils ne le purent, parce que leur dessein leur fut connu.
Then removed he, and came with a great host, and sent letters privily to his adherents in Judea, that they should take Jonathan and those that were with him: howbeit they could not, because their counsel was known unto them.
C'est pourquoi ils prirent des hommes du pays qui étaient les auteurs de ce mal, environ cinquante personnes, et les tuèrent.
Wherefore they took of the men of the country, that were authors of that mischief, about fifty persons, and slew them.
Ensuite Jonathan, Simon et ceux qui étaient avec lui se retirèrent à Bethbasi, qui est dans le désert, et ils en réparèrent les ruines et la fortifièrent.
Afterward Jonathan, and Simon, and they that were with him, got them away to Bethbasi, which is in the wilderness, and they repaired the decays thereof, and made it strong.
Ce que Bacchidès ayant su, il rassembla toute son armée et envoya des ordres à ceux de Judée.
Which thing when Bacchides knew, he gathered together all his host, and sent word to them that were of Judea.
Alors il alla et mit le siège devant Bethbasi ; et ils combattirent contre elle pendant longtemps et construisirent des machines de guerre.
Then went he and laid siege against Bethbasi; and they fought against it a long season and made engines of war.
Mais Jonathan laissa son frère Simon dans la ville, et sortit lui-même dans le pays, et il sortit avec un certain nombre d'hommes.
But Jonathan left his brother Simon in the city, and went forth himself into the country, and with a certain number went he forth.
Et il frappa Odonarkès et ses frères, et les fils de Phasiron dans leur tente.
And he smote Odonarkes and his brethren, and the children of Phasiron in their tent.
Et quand il commença à les frapper et qu'il monta avec ses troupes, Simon et sa troupe sortirent de la ville et brûlèrent les machines de guerre,
And when he began to smite them, and came up with his forces, Simon and his company went out of the city, and burned up the engines of war,
Et ils combattirent contre Bacchidès, qui fut défait par eux, et ils l'affligèrent durement : car son dessein et sa peine furent vains.
And fought against Bacchides, who was discomfited by them, and they afflicted him sore: for his counsel and travail was in vain.
C'est pourquoi il fut fort irrité contre les hommes méchants qui lui avaient conseillé de venir dans le pays, de sorte qu'il en tua beaucoup et résolut de retourner dans son propre pays.
Wherefore he was very wroth at the wicked men that gave him counsel to come into the country, inasmuch as he slew many of them, and purposed to return into his own country.
Ce que Jonathan ayant appris, il lui envoya des ambassadeurs afin de faire la paix avec lui et de lui rendre les prisonniers.
Whereof when Jonathan had knowledge, he sent ambassadors unto him, to the end he should make peace with him, and deliver them the prisoners.
Ce qu'il accepta, et il fit selon ses demandes, et lui jura qu'il ne lui ferait jamais de mal tous les jours de sa vie.
Which thing he accepted, and did according to his demands, and sware unto him that he would never do him harm all the days of his life.
Quand donc il lui eut rendu les prisonniers qu'il avait pris auparavant au pays de Judée, il s'en retourna et s'en alla dans son propre pays, et ne revint plus sur leurs frontières.
When therefore he had restored unto him the prisoners that he had taken aforetime out of the land of Judea, he returned and went his way into his own land, neither came he any more into their borders.
Ainsi l'épée cessa en Israël ; mais Jonathan habita à Machmas et commença à gouverner le peuple ; et il détruisit les impies du milieu d'Israël.
Thus the sword ceased from Israel: but Jonathan dwelt at Machmas, and began to govern the people; and he destroyed the ungodly men out of Israel.
En l'an cent soixante, Alexandre, fils d'Antiochus surnommé Épiphane, monta et prit Ptolémaïs : car le peuple l'avait reçu, et c'est ainsi qu'il y régna.
In the hundred and sixtieth year Alexander, the son of Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, went up and took Ptolemais: for the people had received him, by means whereof he reigned there,
Or, quand le roi Démétrius l'apprit, il rassembla une armée extrêmement grande et sortit contre lui pour combattre.
Now when king Demetrius heard thereof, he gathered together an exceeding great host, and went forth against him to fight.
De plus, Démétrius envoya des lettres à Jonathan avec des paroles affectueuses, afin de l'exalter.
Moreover Demetrius sent letters unto Jonathan with loving words, so as he magnified him.
Car il disait : Faisons d'abord la paix avec lui, avant qu'il ne se joigne à Alexandre contre nous :
For said he, Let us first make peace with him, before he join with Alexander against us:
Sinon il se souviendra de tous les maux que nous avons faits contre lui, contre ses frères et contre son peuple.
Else he will remember all the evils that we have done against him, and against his brethren and his people.
C'est pourquoi il lui donna l'autorité de rassembler une armée et de se pourvoir d'armes, afin qu'il pût l'aider au combat : il ordonna aussi que les otages qui étaient dans la citadelle lui fussent rendus.
Wherefore he gave him authority to gather together an host, and to provide weapons, that he might aid him in battle: he commanded also that the hostages that were in the tower should be delivered him.
Alors Jonathan vint à Jérusalem et lut les lettres en présence de tout le peuple et de ceux qui étaient dans la citadelle :
Then came Jonathan to Jerusalem, and read the letters in the audience of all the people, and of them that were in the tower:
Qui furent saisis d'une grande crainte quand ils entendirent que le roi lui avait donné l'autorité de rassembler une armée.
Who were sore afraid, when they heard that the king had given him authority to gather together an host.
Sur quoi ceux de la citadelle livrèrent leurs otages à Jonathan, et il les rendit à leurs parents.
Whereupon they of the tower delivered their hostages unto Jonathan, and he delivered them unto their parents.
Cela fait, Jonathan s'établit à Jérusalem et commença à bâtir et à réparer la ville.
This done, Jonathan settled himself in Jerusalem, and began to build and repair the city.
Et il ordonna aux ouvriers de bâtir les murs et la montagne de Sion tout autour avec des pierres de taille pour la fortification ; et ils le firent.
And he commanded the workmen to build the walls and the mount Sion and about with square stones for fortification; and they did so.
Alors les étrangers qui étaient dans les forteresses que Bacchidès avait bâties s'enfuirent ;
Then the strangers, that were in the fortresses which Bacchides had built, fled away;
De sorte que chacun quitta sa place et s'en alla dans son propre pays.
Insomuch as every man left his place, and went into his own country.
Seulement à Bethsura restèrent quelques-uns de ceux qui avaient abandonné la loi et les commandements : car c'était leur lieu de refuge.
Only at Bethsura certain of those that had forsaken the law and the commandments remained still: for it was their place of refuge.
Or, quand le roi Alexandre eut entendu les promesses que Démétrius avait envoyées à Jonathan, et qu'on lui eut aussi raconté les batailles et les nobles actions que lui et ses frères avaient faites, et les peines qu'ils avaient endurées,
Now when king Alexander had heard what promises Demetrius had sent unto Jonathan: when also it was told him of the battles and noble acts which he and his brethren had done, and of the pains that they had endured,
Il dit : Trouverons-nous un autre homme tel que lui ? maintenant donc, faisons de lui notre ami et notre confédéré.
He said, Shall we find such another man? now therefore we will make him our friend and confederate.
Sur quoi il écrivit une lettre et la lui envoya, conçue en ces termes :
Upon this he wrote a letter, and sent it unto him, according to these words, saying,
Le roi Alexandre à son frère Jonathan, salut :
King Alexander to his brother Jonathan sendeth greeting:
Nous avons entendu dire de toi que tu es un homme d'une grande puissance et digne d'être notre ami.
We have heard of thee, that thou art a man of great power, and meet to be our friend.
C'est pourquoi, en ce jour, nous t'établissons souverain prêtre de ta nation et t'appelons l'ami du roi ; (et il lui envoya avec cela une robe de pourpre et une couronne d'or) : et nous te demandons de prendre notre parti et de garder amitié avec nous.
Wherefore now this day we ordain thee to be the high priest of thy nation, and to be called the king’s friend; (and therewithal he sent him a purple robe and a crown of gold:) and require thee to take our part, and keep friendship with us.
Ainsi, au septième mois de l'an cent soixante, à la fête des Tabernacles, Jonathan revêtit la sainte robe, rassembla des troupes et se pourvut de beaucoup d'armes.
So in the seventh month of the hundred and sixtieth year, at the feast of the tabernacles, Jonathan put on the holy robe, and gathered together forces, and provided much armour.
Ce que Démétrius ayant appris, il en fut fort affligé et dit :
Whereof when Demetrius heard, he was very sorry, and said,
Qu'avons-nous fait, pour qu'Alexandre nous ait prévenus en faisant amitié avec les Juifs pour se fortifier ?
What have we done, that Alexander hath prevented us in making amity with the Jews to strengthen himself?
Moi aussi, je leur écrirai des paroles d'encouragement, et leur promettrai des dignités et des dons, afin d'avoir leur aide.
I also will write unto them words of encouragement, and promise them dignities and gifts, that I may have their aid.
Il leur envoya donc à cet effet : Le roi Démétrius au peuple des Juifs, salut :
He sent unto them therefore to this effect: King Demetrius unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:
Puisque vous avez gardé vos alliances avec nous et avez persévéré dans notre amitié, ne vous joignant pas à nos ennemis, nous l'avons appris et nous en sommes réjouis.
Whereas ye have kept covenants with us, and continued in our friendship, not joining yourselves with our enemies, we have heard hereof, and are glad.
C'est pourquoi, continuez encore à nous être fidèles, et nous vous récompenserons largement pour ce que vous faites en notre faveur,
Wherefore now continue ye still to be faithful unto us, and we will well recompense you for the things ye do in our behalf,
Et je vous accorderai de nombreuses immunités et vous donnerai des récompenses.
And will grant you many immunities, and give you rewards.
Et maintenant, je vous affranchis, et pour vous je décharge tous les Juifs des tributs, de la taxe du sel et des couronnes d'or,
And now do I free you, and for your sake I release all the Jews, from tributes, and from the customs of salt, and from crown taxes,
Et de ce qu'il m'appartient de recevoir pour le tiers de la semence et la moitié du fruit des arbres, je les en décharge dès ce jour, de sorte qu'ils ne seront plus perçus sur le pays de Judée, ni sur les trois gouvernements qui y sont ajoutés du pays de Samarie et de Galilée, dès ce jour et pour toujours.
And from that which appertaineth unto me to receive for the third part or the seed, and the half of the fruit of the trees, I release it from this day forth, so that they shall not be taken of the land of Judea, nor of the three governments which are added thereunto out of the country of Samaria and Galilee, from this day forth for evermore.
Que Jérusalem aussi soit sainte et libre, avec son territoire, tant pour les dîmes que pour les tributs.
Let Jerusalem also be holy and free, with the borders thereof, both from tenths and tributes.
Et quant à la citadelle qui est à Jérusalem, je renonce à toute autorité sur elle et la donne au souverain prêtre, afin qu'il y place les hommes qu'il aura choisis pour la garder.
And as for the tower which is at Jerusalem, I yield up authority over it, and give the high priest, that he may set in it such men as he shall choose to keep it.
De plus, je mets librement en liberté chacun des Juifs qui ont été emmenés captifs du pays de Judée dans quelque partie de mon royaume que ce soit, et je veux que tous mes officiers fassent remise des tributs, même sur leur bétail.
Moreover I freely set at liberty every one of the Jews, that were carried captives out of the land of Judea into any part of my kingdom, and I will that all my officers remit the tributes even of their cattle.
En outre, je veux que toutes les fêtes, les sabbats, les nouvelles lunes, les jours solennels, les trois jours avant la fête et les trois jours après la fête soient tous des jours d'immunité et de liberté pour tous les Juifs de mon royaume.
Furthermore I will that all the feasts, and sabbaths, and new moons, and solemn days, and the three days before the feast, and the three days after the feast shall be all of immunity and freedom for all the Jews in my realm.
Aussi nul n'aura l'autorité de s'ingérer ou d'inquiéter aucun d'eux en quelque affaire que ce soit.
Also no man shall have authority to meddle with or to molest any of them in any matter.
Je veux de plus qu'on enrôle parmi les troupes du roi environ trente mille hommes des Juifs, auxquels une solde sera donnée, comme il appartient à toutes les troupes du roi.
I will further, that there be enrolled among the king’s forces about thirty thousand men of the Jews, unto whom pay shall be given, as belongeth to all king’s forces.
Et d'entre eux, certains seront placés dans les forteresses du roi, et d'autres seront préposés aux affaires du royaume qui demandent de la confiance : et je veux que leurs chefs et leurs gouverneurs soient pris parmi eux, et qu'ils vivent selon leurs propres lois, ainsi que le roi l'a ordonné dans le pays de Judée.
And of them some shall be placed in the king’s strong holds, of whom also some shall be set over the affairs of the kingdom, which are of trust: and I will that their overseers and governors be of themselves, and that they live after their own laws, even as the king hath commanded in the land of Judea.
Et concernant les trois gouvernements qui sont ajoutés à la Judée du pays de Samarie, qu'ils soient réunis à la Judée, afin qu'ils soient considérés comme ne faisant qu'un, et ne soient tenus d'obéir à aucune autre autorité qu'à celle du souverain prêtre.
And concerning the three governments that are added to Judea from the country of Samaria, let them be joined with Judea, that they may be reckoned to be under one, nor bound to obey other authority than the high priest’s.
Quant à Ptolémaïs et au pays qui en dépend, je les donne en don gratuit au sanctuaire de Jérusalem pour les dépenses nécessaires du sanctuaire.
As for Ptolemais, and the land pertaining thereto, I give it as a free gift to the sanctuary at Jerusalem for the necessary expences of the sanctuary.
De plus, je donne chaque année quinze mille sicles d'argent sur les revenus du roi, des lieux qui m'appartiennent.
Moreover I give every year fifteen thousand shekels of silver out of the king’s accounts from the places appertaining.
Et tout le surplus que les officiers n'ont pas versé comme par le passé, sera donné désormais pour les travaux du temple.
And all the overplus, which the officers payed not in as in former time, from henceforth shall be given toward the works of the temple.
Et outre cela, les cinq mille sicles d'argent qu'ils prenaient chaque année sur les revenus du temple pour ses usages, ces sommes mêmes seront remises, parce qu'elles appartiennent aux prêtres qui font le service.
And beside this, the five thousand shekels of silver, which they took from the uses of the temple out of the accounts year by year, even those things shall be released, because they appertain to the priests that minister.
Et quiconque s'enfuira au temple de Jérusalem ou dans ses dépendances, étant redevable au roi ou pour quelque autre motif, qu'il soit libre, ainsi que tout ce qu'il possède dans mon royaume.
And whosoever they be that flee unto the temple at Jerusalem, or be within the liberties hereof, being indebted unto the king, or for any other matter, let them be at liberty, and all that they have in my realm.
Pour la construction aussi et la réparation des ouvrages du sanctuaire, les dépenses seront fournies par les revenus du roi.
For the building also and repairing of the works of the sanctuary expences shall be given of the king’s accounts.
Oui, et pour la construction des murs de Jérusalem et sa fortification tout autour, les dépenses seront fournies par les revenus du roi, de même que pour la construction des murs en Judée.
Yea, and for the building of the walls of Jerusalem, and the fortifying thereof round about, expences shall be given out of the king’s accounts, as also for the building of the walls in Judea.
Or, quand Jonathan et le peuple entendirent ces paroles, ils n'y ajoutèrent point foi et ne les reçurent point, parce qu'ils se souvenaient du grand mal qu'il avait fait en Israël ; car il les avait affligés très durement.
Now when Jonathan and the people heard these words, they gave no credit unto them, nor received them, because they remembered the great evil that he had done in Israel; for he had afflicted them very sore.
Mais ils furent bien satisfaits d'Alexandre, parce qu'il fut le premier à leur proposer une paix véritable, et ils furent toujours ses confédérés.
But with Alexander they were well pleased, because he was the first that entreated of true peace with them, and they were confederate with him always.
Alors le roi Alexandre rassembla de grandes forces et campa vis-à-vis de Démétrius.
Then gathered king Alexander great forces, and camped over against Demetrius.
Et après que les deux rois eurent engagé le combat, l'armée de Démétrius s'enfuit : mais Alexandre le poursuivit et l'emporta sur eux.
And after the two kings had joined battle, Demetrius’ host fled: but Alexander followed after him, and prevailed against them.
Et il continua le combat fort rudement jusqu'au coucher du soleil : et ce jour-là Démétrius fut tué.
And he continued the battle very sore until the sun went down: and that day was Demetrius slain.
Ensuite Alexandre envoya des ambassadeurs à Ptolémée, roi d'Égypte, avec un message en ces termes :
Afterward Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemee king of Egypt with a message to this effect:
Puisque je suis revenu dans mon royaume, que je suis assis sur le trône de mes pères, que j'ai obtenu la domination, que j'ai renversé Démétrius et recouvré notre pays ;
Forasmuch as I am come again to my realm, and am set in the throne of my progenitors, and have gotten the dominion, and overthrown Demetrius, and recovered our country;
Car après que j'eus engagé le combat avec lui, lui et son armée ont été défaits par nous, de sorte que nous sommes assis sur le trône de son royaume :
For after I had joined battle with him, both he and his host was discomfited by us, so that we sit in the throne of his kingdom:
Maintenant donc, faisons alliance d'amitié ensemble, et donne-moi maintenant ta fille pour femme : et je serai ton gendre, et je vous donnerai, à toi et à elle, des présents dignes de toi.
Now therefore let us make a league of amity together, and give me now thy daughter to wife: and I will be thy son in law, and will give both thee and her as according to thy dignity.
Alors le roi Ptolémée répondit, disant : Heureux le jour où tu es revenu dans la terre de tes pères et où tu t'es assis sur le trône de leur royaume.
Then Ptolemee the king gave answer, saying, Happy be the day wherein thou didst return into the land of thy fathers, and satest in the throne of their kingdom.
Et maintenant, je ferai pour toi ce que tu as écrit : viens donc à ma rencontre à Ptolémaïs, afin que nous nous voyions l'un l'autre ; car je te donnerai ma fille en mariage selon ton désir.
And now will I do to thee, as thou hast written: meet me therefore at Ptolemais, that we may see one another; for I will marry my daughter to thee according to thy desire.
Ainsi Ptolémée sortit d'Égypte avec sa fille Cléopâtre, et ils vinrent à Ptolémaïs en l'an cent soixante-deux :
So Ptolemee went out of Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra, and they came unto Ptolemais in the hundred threescore and second year:
Où le roi Alexandre, allant à sa rencontre, il lui donna sa fille Cléopâtre et célébra son mariage à Ptolémaïs avec une grande gloire, comme il sied aux rois.
Where king Alexander meeting him, he gave unto him his daughter Cleopatra, and celebrated her marriage at Ptolemais with great glory, as the manner of kings is.
Or, le roi Alexandre avait écrit à Jonathan de venir à sa rencontre.
Now king Alexander had written unto Jonathan, that he should come and meet him.
Il se rendit alors avec honneur à Ptolémais, où il rencontra les deux rois, et il leur donna, ainsi qu'à leurs amis, de l'argent et de l'or, et de nombreux présents, et il trouva grâce à leurs yeux.
Who thereupon went honourably to Ptolemais, where he met the two kings, and gave them and their friends silver and gold, and many presents, and found favour in their sight.
En ce temps-là, des hommes pervers d'Israël, des hommes d'une vie méchante, s'assemblèrent contre lui pour l'accuser ; mais le roi ne voulut point les écouter.
At that time certain pestilent fellows of Israel, men of a wicked life, assembled themselves against him, to accuse him: but the king would not hear them.
Bien plus, le roi ordonna de lui ôter ses vêtements et de le revêtir de pourpre ; et ils firent ainsi.
Yea more than that, the king commanded to take off his garments, and clothe him in purple: and they did so.
Et il le fit asseoir auprès de lui, et dit à ses princes : Allez avec lui au milieu de la ville, et faites proclamer que nul ne se plaigne contre lui d'aucune affaire, et que nul ne l'inquiète pour quelque cause que ce soit.
And he made him sit by himself, and said into his princes, Go with him into the midst of the city, and make proclamation, that no man complain against him of any matter, and that no man trouble him for any manner of cause.
Or, quand ses accusateurs virent qu'il était honoré selon la proclamation, et revêtu de pourpre, ils s'enfuirent tous.
Now when his accusers saw that he was honored according to the proclamation, and clothed in purple, they fled all away.

So the king honoured him, and wrote him among his chief friends, and made him a duke, and partaker of his dominion.

Afterward Jonathan returned to Jerusalem with peace and gladness.
De plus, en l'an cent soixante-cinq, Démétrius, fils de Démétrius, vint de Crète dans la terre de ses pères.
Furthermore in the; hundred threescore and fifth year came Demetrius son of Demetrius out of Crete into the land of his fathers:
Le roi Alexandre, l'ayant appris, en fut fort affligé et retourna à Antioche.
Whereof when king Alexander heard tell, he was right sorry, and returned into Antioch.
Alors Démétrius établit Apollonius, gouverneur de Célésyrie, pour son général, lequel rassembla une grande armée, campa à Jamnia, et envoya dire à Jonathan, le souverain sacrificateur :
Then Demetrius made Apollonius the governor of Celosyria his general, who gathered together a great host, and camped in Jamnia, and sent unto Jonathan the high priest, saying,
Toi seul t'élèves contre nous, et je suis devenu un objet de dérision et d'opprobre à cause de toi ; et pourquoi vantes-tu ta puissance contre nous dans les montagnes ?
Thou alone liftest up thyself against us, and I am laughed to scorn for thy sake, and reproached: and why dost thou vaunt thy power against us in the mountains?
Maintenant donc, si tu as confiance en ta propre force, descends vers nous dans la plaine, et là nous nous mesurerons ensemble ; car la puissance des villes est avec moi.
Now therefore, if thou trustest in thine own strength, come down to us into the plain field, and there let us try the matter together: for with me is the power of the cities.
Demande et apprends qui je suis, et qui sont les autres qui nous aident, et ils te diront que ton pied ne pourra tenir devant nous dans leur propre pays.
Ask and learn who I am, and the rest that take our part, and they shall tell thee that thy foot is not able to to flight in their own land.
C'est pourquoi tu ne pourras maintenant résister à la cavalerie et à une si grande force dans la plaine, où il n'y a ni pierre, ni caillou, ni lieu pour s'enfuir.
Wherefore now thou shalt not be able to abide the horsemen and so great a power in the plain, where is neither stone nor flint, nor place to flee unto.
Jonathan, ayant entendu ces paroles d'Apollonius, fut ému dans son âme, et choisissant dix mille hommes, il sortit de Jérusalem, où Simon son frère vint au-devant de lui pour l'aider.
So when Jonathan heard these words of Apollonius, he was moved in his mind, and choosing ten thousand men he went out of Jerusalem, where Simon his brother met him for to help him.
Et il dressa ses tentes devant Joppé ; mais ceux de Joppé lui en fermèrent les portes, parce qu'Apollonius y avait une garnison.
And he pitched his tents against Joppa: but; they of Joppa shut him out of the city, because Apollonius had a garrison there.
Alors Jonathan en fit le siège ; sur quoi ceux de la ville, saisis de crainte, le laissèrent entrer ; et ainsi Jonathan gagna Joppé.
Then Jonathan laid siege unto it: whereupon they of the city let him in for fear: and so Jonathan won Joppa.
Apollonius, l'ayant appris, prit trois mille cavaliers avec une grande armée de gens de pied, et alla vers Azot comme s'il voyageait, et par là il l'attira dans la plaine, parce qu'il avait un grand nombre de cavaliers en qui il mettait sa confiance.
Whereof when Apollonius heard, he took three thousand horsemen, with a great host of footmen, and went to Azotus as one that journeyed, and therewithal drew him forth into the plain. because he had a great number of horsemen, in whom he put his trust.
Alors Jonathan le poursuivit jusqu'à Azot, où les armées engagèrent la bataille.
Then Jonathan followed after him to Azotus, where the armies joined battle.
Or, Apollonius avait laissé mille cavaliers en embuscade.
Now Apollonius had left a thousand horsemen in ambush.
Et Jonathan sut qu'il y avait une embuscade derrière lui ; car ils avaient environné son armée et jeté des dards contre le peuple, du matin jusqu'au soir.
And Jonathan knew that there was an ambushment behind him; for they had compassed in his host, and cast darts at the people, from morning till evening.
Mais le peuple se tint ferme, comme Jonathan l'avait ordonné ; et ainsi les chevaux des ennemis se fatiguèrent.
But the people stood still, as Jonathan had commanded them: and so the enemies’ horses were tired.
Alors Simon fit avancer son armée et attaqua les gens de pied (car les cavaliers étaient épuisés), lesquels furent défaits par lui et s'enfuirent.
Then brought Simon forth his host, and set them against the footmen, (for the horsemen were spent) who were discomfited by him, and fled.
Les cavaliers aussi, ayant été dispersés dans la plaine, s'enfuirent vers Azot et entrèrent dans Beth-Dagon, le temple de leur idole, pour y être en sûreté.
The horsemen also, being scattered in the field, fled to Azotus, and went into Bethdagon, their idol’s temple, for safety.
Mais Jonathan mit le feu à Azot et aux villes d'alentour, et en prit les dépouilles ; et il brûla par le feu le temple de Dagon avec ceux qui s'y étaient réfugiés.
But Jonathan set fire on Azotus, and the cities round about it, and took their spoils; and the temple of Dagon, with them that were fled into it, he burned with fire.
Ainsi, il y eut environ huit mille hommes brûlés ou tués par l'épée.
Thus there were burned and slain with the sword well nigh eight thousand men.
De là, Jonathan déplaça son armée et campa devant Ascalon, d'où les hommes de la ville sortirent et vinrent au-devant de lui avec une grande pompe.
And from thence Jonathan removed his host, and camped against Ascalon, where the men of the city came forth, and met him with great pomp.
Après cela, Jonathan retourna à Jérusalem avec son armée, ayant de riches dépouilles.
After this returned Jonathan and his host unto Jerusalem, having any spoils.
Or, quand le roi Alexandre apprit ces choses, il honora encore plus Jonathan.
Now when king Alexander heard these things, he honoured Jonathan yet more.
Et il lui envoya une agrafe d'or, comme on a coutume d'en donner à ceux qui sont du sang des rois ; il lui donna aussi Accaron avec tout son territoire en possession.
And sent him a buckle of gold, as the use is to be given to such as are of the king’s blood: he gave him also Accaron with the borders thereof in possession.
Et le roi d'Égypte rassembla une grande armée, nombreuse comme le sable qui est sur le rivage de la mer, et beaucoup de navires, et il chercha par tromperie à s'emparer du royaume d'Alexandre pour le joindre au sien.
And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander’s kingdom, and join it to his own.
Sur quoi il entreprit son voyage en Espagne d'une manière pacifique, de sorte que les habitants des villes lui ouvraient les portes et venaient au-devant de lui ; car le roi Alexandre leur avait ordonné de faire ainsi, parce qu'il était son beau-frère.
Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.
Or, à mesure que Ptolémée entrait dans les villes, il y mettait une garnison de soldats pour les garder.
Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.
Et quand il fut près d'Azot, on lui montra le temple de Dagon qui avait été brûlé, et Azot avec ses faubourgs qui avaient été détruits, et les corps qui avaient été jetés çà et là, et ceux qu'il avait brûlés dans la bataille ; car ils en avaient fait des monceaux sur le chemin par où il devait passer.
And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.
Ils racontèrent aussi au roi tout ce que Jonathan avait fait, afin de le blâmer ; mais le roi garda le silence.
Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.
Alors Jonathan alla au-devant du roi avec une grande pompe à Joppé, où ils se saluèrent l'un l'autre et logèrent.
Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.
Ensuite Jonathan, après avoir accompagné le roi jusqu'au fleuve appelé Éleuthère, retourna à Jérusalem.
Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.
Le roi Ptolémée, s'étant ainsi rendu maître de l'empire des villes maritimes jusqu'à Séleucie sur la côte de la mer, conçut de mauvais desseins contre Alexandre.
King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.
C'est pourquoi il envoya des ambassadeurs au roi Démétrius, disant : Viens, faisons alliance entre nous, et je te donnerai ma fille qu'Alexandre possède, et tu régneras sur le royaume de ton père.
Whereupon he sent ambassadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father’s kingdom:
Car je me repens de lui avoir donné ma fille, parce qu'il a cherché à me tuer.
For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.
C'est ainsi qu'il le calomniait, parce qu'il convoitait son royaume.
Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.
C'est pourquoi il lui ôta sa fille et la donna à Démétrius, et il abandonna Alexandre, de sorte que leur haine fut ouvertement connue.
Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.
Alors Ptolémée entra dans Antioche, et il mit deux couronnes sur sa tête, la couronne d'Asie et celle d'Égypte.
Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.
En ce temps-là, le roi Alexandre était en Cilicie, parce que les habitants de ces contrées s'étaient révoltés contre lui.
In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.
Mais quand Alexandre l'apprit, il vint lui faire la guerre ; sur quoi le roi Ptolémée fit avancer son armée, vint au-devant de lui avec une grande puissance et le mit en fuite.
But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.
Ainsi Alexandre s'enfuit en Arabie pour y être protégé ; mais le roi Ptolémée fut exalté.
So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:
Car Zabdiel l'Arabe coupa la tête d'Alexandre et l'envoya à Ptolémée.
For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander’s head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.
Le roi Ptolémée mourut aussi le troisième jour après, et ceux qui étaient dans les forteresses furent tués les uns par les autres.
King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.
Par ce moyen, Démétrius commença à régner en l'an cent soixante-sept.
By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.
En ce même temps, Jonathan rassembla ceux qui étaient en Judée pour prendre la citadelle qui était à Jérusalem ; et il fit construire contre elle beaucoup de machines de guerre.
At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.
Alors des hommes impies, qui haïssaient leur propre peuple, allèrent vers le roi et lui dirent que Jonathan assiégeait la citadelle.
Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,
Ce qu'ayant appris, il se mit en colère, et partant aussitôt, il vint à Ptolémais et écrivit à Jonathan de ne point assiéger la citadelle, mais de venir lui parler à Ptolémais en toute hâte.
Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.
Néanmoins Jonathan, l'ayant appris, ordonna de continuer le siège ; et il choisit certains des anciens d'Israël et des prêtres, et se mit en péril ;
Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;
Et il prit de l'argent, de l'or, des vêtements et divers autres présents, et se rendit à Ptolémais vers le roi, où il trouva grâce à ses yeux.
And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.
Et bien que certains hommes impies du peuple eussent porté plainte contre lui,
And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,
Le roi le traita comme ses prédécesseurs l'avaient fait avant lui, et l'éleva en présence de tous ses amis,
Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,
Et il le confirma dans le souverain sacerdoce et dans tous les honneurs qu'il avait auparavant, et lui donna la prééminence parmi ses premiers amis.
And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.
Alors Jonathan demanda au roi qu'il affranchît la Judée de tout tribut, ainsi que les trois gouvernements avec le pays de Samarie ; et il lui promit trois cents talents.
Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.
Le roi y consentit et écrivit à Jonathan des lettres sur toutes ces choses, en cette manière :
So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:
Le roi Démétrius à son frère Jonathan et à la nation des Juifs, salut.
King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
Nous vous envoyons ici la copie de la lettre que nous avons écrite à Lasthénès notre parent à votre sujet, afin que vous puissiez la voir.
We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.
Le roi Démétrius à Lasthénès son père, salut.
King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:
Nous avons résolu de faire du bien au peuple des Juifs, qui sont nos amis et qui gardent nos alliances, à cause de leur bonne volonté envers nous.
We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.
C'est pourquoi nous leur avons confirmé les frontières de la Judée, avec les trois gouvernements d'Aphéréma, de Lydda et de Ramathem, qui ont été ajoutés à la Judée du pays de Samarie, et tout ce qui en dépend, pour tous ceux qui sacrifient à Jérusalem, au lieu des paiements que le roi recevait d'eux chaque année auparavant sur les fruits de la terre et des arbres.
Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.
Et quant aux autres choses qui nous appartiennent, des dîmes et des taxes qui nous reviennent, ainsi que les salines et les impôts de la couronne qui nous sont dus, nous les en déchargeons tous pour leur soulagement.
And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.
Et rien de tout ceci ne sera révoqué, dès maintenant et à jamais.
And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.
Maintenant donc, aie soin d'en faire une copie, et qu'elle soit remise à Jonathan et placée sur la montagne sainte en un lieu visible.
Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.
Après cela, quand le roi Démétrius vit que le pays était en paix devant lui et que nulle résistance ne lui était faite, il renvoya toutes ses forces, chacun en son lieu, excepté certaines bandes d'étrangers qu'il avait rassemblées des îles des païens ; c'est pourquoi toutes les forces de ses pères le haïssaient.
After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.
De plus, il y avait un certain Tryphon, qui avait été auparavant du parti d'Alexandre, lequel, voyant que toute l'armée murmurait contre Démétrius, alla vers Simalcué l'Arabe qui élevait Antiochus, le jeune fils d'Alexandre,
Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander’s part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,
Et il le pressait vivement de lui livrer ce jeune Antiochus, afin qu'il régnât à la place de son père ; il lui raconta donc tout ce que Démétrius avait fait, et comment ses gens de guerre étaient en inimitié avec lui, et il demeura là un long temps.
And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father’s stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.
Entre-temps, Jonathan envoya dire au roi Démétrius qu'il fît sortir de Jérusalem ceux qui étaient dans la citadelle, ainsi que ceux qui étaient dans les forteresses ; car ils combattaient contre Israël.
In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.
Démétrius envoya donc dire à Jonathan : Non seulement je ferai cela pour toi et pour ton peuple, mais je t'honorerai grandement, toi et ta nation, si l'occasion s'en présente.
So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.
Maintenant donc, tu feras bien de m'envoyer des hommes pour me secourir ; car toutes mes forces m'ont abandonné.
Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.
Là-dessus, Jonathan lui envoya trois mille hommes vaillants à Antioche ; et quand ils vinrent vers le roi, le roi fut très joyeux de leur venue.
Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.
Cependant, les habitants de la ville s'assemblèrent au milieu de la cité, au nombre de cent vingt mille hommes, et voulaient tuer le roi.
Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.
C'est pourquoi le roi s'enfuit dans le palais ; mais ceux de la ville s'emparèrent des passages de la cité et commencèrent à combattre.
Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.
Alors le roi appela les Juifs à son secours ; ils vinrent tous à lui en un instant, et se dispersant dans la ville, ils tuèrent ce jour-là dans la cité jusqu'à cent mille hommes.
Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.
Ils mirent aussi le feu à la ville, firent un grand butin ce jour-là, et délivrèrent le roi.
Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.
Or, quand ceux de la ville virent que les Juifs s'étaient rendus maîtres de la cité comme ils le voulaient, leur courage s'abattit ; c'est pourquoi ils firent supplication au roi et crièrent, disant :
So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,
Accordez-nous la paix, et que les Juifs cessent de nous attaquer, nous et la ville.
Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.
Sur quoi ils jetèrent leurs armes et firent la paix ; et les Juifs furent honorés devant le roi et devant tous ceux qui étaient dans son royaume ; et ils retournèrent à Jérusalem avec de riches dépouilles.
With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.
Ainsi le roi Démétrius s'assit sur le trône de son royaume, et le pays fut en paix devant lui.
So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.
Néanmoins, il fut trompeur dans tout ce qu'il avait dit, et il se détacha de Jonathan, et ne le récompensa point selon les bienfaits qu'il avait reçus de lui, mais il lui causa de grandes afflictions.
Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.
Après cela, Tryphon revint, et avec lui le jeune enfant Antiochus, qui régna et fut couronné.
After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.
Alors s'assemblèrent auprès de lui tous les gens de guerre que Démétrius avait congédiés, et ils combattirent contre Démétrius, qui tourna le dos et s'enfuit.
Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.
De plus, Tryphon prit les éléphants et s'empara d'Antioche.
Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.
En ce temps-là, le jeune Antiochus écrivit à Jonathan, disant : Je te confirme dans le souverain sacerdoce, et je t'établis chef sur les quatre gouvernements, et pour être l'un des amis du roi.
At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king’s friends.
Là-dessus, il lui envoya des vases d'or pour son service, et lui permit de boire dans de l'or, d'être revêtu de pourpre et de porter une agrafe d'or.
Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.
Il établit aussi son frère Simon pour chef, depuis le lieu appelé l'Échelle de Tyr jusqu'aux frontières d'Égypte.
His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.
Alors Jonathan se mit en marche et parcourut les villes au-delà du fleuve, et toutes les forces de Syrie s'assemblèrent vers lui pour l'aider ; et quand il vint à Ascalon, les habitants de la ville vinrent au-devant de lui honorablement.
Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.
De là, il alla à Gaza, mais ceux de Gaza lui fermèrent les portes ; c'est pourquoi il en fit le siège, et brûla ses faubourgs par le feu, et les pilla.
From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.
Ensuite, ceux de Gaza ayant supplié Jonathan, il fit la paix avec eux, prit les fils de leurs chefs pour otages, les envoya à Jérusalem, et parcourut le pays jusqu'à Damas.
Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.
Or, quand Jonathan apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient venus à Cadès en Galilée avec une grande armée, ayant l'intention de le chasser du pays,
Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius’ princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,
Il alla au-devant d'eux, et laissa Simon son frère dans le pays.
He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.
Alors Simon campa devant Bethsura, l'attaqua pendant longtemps et l'investit.
Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:
Mais ils demandèrent à faire la paix avec lui, ce qu'il leur accorda ; puis il les fit sortir de là, prit la ville et y mit une garnison.
But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.
Quant à Jonathan et à son armée, ils campèrent près des eaux de Génésareth, d'où, de grand matin, ils se rendirent à la plaine de Nasor.
As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.

And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.
Or, quand ceux qui étaient en embuscade sortirent de leurs places et engagèrent le combat, tous ceux qui étaient du côté de Jonathan s'enfuirent ;
So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan’s side fled;
De sorte qu'il n'en resta pas un seul, excepté Mattathias, fils d'Absalom, et Judas, fils de Chalphi, chefs de l'armée.
Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.
Alors Jonathan déchira ses vêtements, mit de la poussière sur sa tête et pria.
Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.
Ensuite, retournant au combat, il les mit en fuite, et ils s'enfuirent.
Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.
Or, quand ses propres hommes qui s'étaient enfuis virent cela, ils revinrent à lui et poursuivirent avec lui les ennemis jusqu'à Cadès, jusqu'à leurs propres tentes, et ils y campèrent.
Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.
Ainsi, il y eut environ trois mille hommes parmi les païens qui furent tués ce jour-là ; et Jonathan retourna à Jérusalem.
So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
Or, Jonathan, voyant que le temps lui était favorable, choisit certains hommes et les envoya à Rome pour confirmer et renouveler l'amitié qu'ils avaient avec eux.
Now when Jonathan saw that time served him, he chose certain men, and sent them to Rome, for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them.
Il envoya aussi des lettres aux Lacédémoniens et en d'autres lieux pour le même dessein.
He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians, and to other places, for the same purpose.
Ils allèrent donc à Rome, entrèrent au sénat et dirent : Jonathan le souverain sacrificateur et le peuple des Juifs nous ont envoyés vers vous, afin que vous renouveliez l'amitié que vous aviez avec eux, et l'alliance, comme autrefois.
So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said, Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in former time.
Là-dessus, les Romains leur donnèrent des lettres pour les gouverneurs de chaque lieu, afin qu'ils les ramenassent au pays de Judée en paix.
Upon this the Romans gave them letters unto the governors of every place that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably.
Et voici la copie des lettres que Jonathan écrivit aux Lacédémoniens :
And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians:
Jonathan le souverain sacrificateur, les anciens de la nation, les prêtres et le reste des Juifs, aux Lacédémoniens leurs frères, salut.
Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other of the Jews, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting:
Des lettres furent envoyées autrefois à Onias le souverain sacrificateur, de la part de Darius qui régnait alors parmi vous, pour signifier que vous êtes nos frères, comme la copie ci-dessous écrite le spécifie.
There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from Darius, who reigned then among you, to signify that ye are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.
En ce temps-là, Onias traita honorablement l'ambassadeur qui avait été envoyé, et reçut les lettres où il était fait mention de l'alliance et de l'amitié.
At which time Onias entreated the ambassador that was sent honourably, and received the letters, wherein declaration was made of the league and friendship.
C'est pourquoi nous aussi, bien que nous n'ayons besoin d'aucune de ces choses, ayant entre les mains les livres saints de l'Écriture pour nous consoler,
Therefore we also, albeit we need none of these things, that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us,
Nous avons néanmoins entrepris de vous envoyer renouveler la fraternité et l'amitié, de peur que nous ne devenions tout à fait étrangers pour vous ; car il s'est passé un long temps depuis que vous nous avez envoyé une ambassade.
Have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers unto you altogether: for there is a long time passed since ye sent unto us.
Nous donc, en tout temps et sans cesse, tant dans nos fêtes que dans les autres jours solennels, nous nous souvenons de vous dans les sacrifices que nous offrons et dans nos prières, comme il est juste et comme il convient de penser à nos frères.
We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our feasts, and other convenient days, do remember you in the sacrifices which we offer, and in our prayers, as reason is, and as it becometh us to think upon our brethren:
Et nous nous réjouissons fort de votre gloire.
And we are right glad of your honour.
Pour nous, nous avons eu de grandes tribulations et des guerres de tous côtés, d'autant que les rois qui nous entourent nous ont fait la guerre.
As for ourselves, we have had great troubles and wars on every side, forsomuch as the kings that are round about us have fought against us.
Toutefois, nous n'avons pas voulu vous être à charge, ni aux autres de nos confédérés et amis, dans ces guerres.
Howbeit we would not be troublesome unto you, nor to others of our confederates and friends, in these wars:
Car nous avons le secours du ciel qui nous assiste, de sorte que nous sommes délivrés de nos ennemis, et nos ennemis sont abaissés sous nos pieds.
For we have help from heaven that succoureth us, so as we are delivered from our enemies, and our enemies are brought under foot.
Pour cette cause, nous avons choisi Numénius, fils d'Antiochus, et Antipater, fils de Jason, et nous les avons envoyés vers les Romains pour renouveler l'amitié que nous avions avec eux et l'ancienne alliance.
For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater he son of Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the amity that we had with them, and the former league.

We commanded them also to go unto you, and to salute and to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.

Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto.

Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest, greeting:
On a trouvé dans un écrit que les Lacédémoniens et les Juifs sont frères, et qu'ils sont de la race d'Abraham.
It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham:
Maintenant donc, puisque cela est venu à notre connaissance, vous ferez bien de nous écrire au sujet de votre prospérité.
Now therefore, since this is come to our knowledge, ye shall do well to write unto us of your prosperity.
Nous vous répondons que vos troupeaux et vos biens sont à nous, et les nôtres sont à vous. Nous ordonnons donc à nos ambassadeurs de vous faire rapport de cette manière.
We do write back again to you, that your cattle and goods are our’s, and our’s are your’s We do command therefore our ambassadors to make report unto you on this wise.
Or, quand Jonathan apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient venus pour le combattre avec une armée plus nombreuse qu'auparavant,
Now when Jonathan heard that Demebius’ princes were come to fight against him with a greater host than afore,
Il partit de Jérusalem et alla au-devant d'eux dans le pays d'Amath ; car il ne leur laissa pas de répit pour entrer dans son pays.
He removed from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amathis: for he gave them no respite to enter his country.
Il envoya aussi des espions dans leurs tentes, lesquels revinrent et lui dirent qu'ils étaient disposés à tomber sur eux pendant la nuit.
He sent spies also unto their tents, who came again, and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night season.
C'est pourquoi, dès que le soleil fut couché, Jonathan ordonna à ses gens de veiller et d'être sous les armes, afin que toute la nuit ils fussent prêts à combattre ; il envoya aussi des sentinelles tout autour de l'armée.
Wherefore so soon as the sun was down, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms, that all the night long they might be ready to fight: also he sent forth centinels round about the host.
Mais quand les adversaires apprirent que Jonathan et ses gens étaient prêts pour le combat, ils craignirent et tremblèrent dans leur cœur, et ils allumèrent des feux dans leur camp.
But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they feared, and trembled in their hearts, and they kindled fires in their camp.
Cependant Jonathan et sa compagnie ne le surent que le matin, car ils voyaient les lumières brûler.
Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.
Alors Jonathan les poursuivit, mais il ne put les atteindre, car ils avaient passé le fleuve Éleuthère.
Then Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they were gone over the river Eleutherus.
C'est pourquoi Jonathan se tourna vers les Arabes appelés Zabadéens, les frappa et prit leurs dépouilles.
Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians, who were called Zabadeans, and smote them, and took their spoils.
Et partant de là, il vint à Damas et parcourut tout le pays.
And removing thence, he came to Damascus, and so passed through all the country,
Simon aussi se mit en marche et parcourut le pays jusqu'à Ascalon et aux forteresses voisines, d'où il se détourna vers Joppé et s'en empara.
Simon also went forth, and passed through the country unto Ascalon, and the holds there adjoining, from whence he turned aside to Joppa, and won it.
Car il avait appris qu'ils voulaient livrer la forteresse aux partisans de Démétrius ; c'est pourquoi il y mit une garnison pour la garder.
For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius’ part; wherefore he set a garrison there to keep it.
Après cela, Jonathan revint, et ayant assemblé les anciens du peuple, il délibéra avec eux sur la construction de forteresses en Judée,
After this came Jonathan home again, and calling the elders of the people together, he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea,
Et sur l'exhaussement des murs de Jérusalem, et l'élévation d'un grand rempart entre la citadelle et la ville, afin de la séparer de la cité, pour qu'elle fût isolée et que l'on ne pût ni y vendre ni y acheter.
And making the walls of Jerusalem higher, and raising a great mount between the tower and the city, for to separate it from the city, that so it might be alone, that men might neither sell nor buy in it.
Là-dessus, ils s'assemblèrent pour rebâtir la ville, car une partie du mur du côté du torrent, à l'orient, était tombée, et ils réparèrent ce qui était appelé Caphénatha.
Upon this they came together to build up the city, forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was fallen down, and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha.
Simon aussi rebâtit Adida dans la Séphéla, et la fortifia de portes et de barres.
Simon also set up Adida in Sephela, and made it strong with gates and bars.
Or, Tryphon cherchait à s'emparer du royaume d'Asie et à tuer le roi Antiochus, afin de mettre la couronne sur sa propre tête.
Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia, and to kill Antiochus the king, that he might set the crown upon his own head.
Toutefois, il craignait que Jonathan ne le souffrît pas et ne lui fît la guerre ; c'est pourquoi il cherchait un moyen de se saisir de Jonathan pour le tuer. Il partit donc et vint à Bethsan.
Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him, and that he would fight against him; wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan, that he might kill him. So he removed, and came to Bethsan.
Alors Jonathan sortit au-devant de lui avec quarante mille hommes choisis pour le combat, et il vint à Bethsan.
Then Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for the battle, and came to Bethsan.
Or, quand Tryphon vit que Jonathan venait avec une si grande force, il n'osa porter la main sur lui ;
Now when Tryphon saw Jonathan came with so great a force, he durst not stretch his hand against him;
Mais il le reçut honorablement, le recommanda à tous ses amis, lui fit des présents et ordonna à ses gens de guerre de lui être aussi obéissants qu'à lui-même.
But received him honourably, and commended him unto all his friends, and gave him gifts, and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him, as to himself.
Il dit aussi à Jonathan : Pourquoi as-tu fatigué tout ce peuple, puisqu'il n'y a point de guerre entre nous ?
Unto Jonathan also he said, Why hast thou brought all this people to so great trouble, seeing there is no war betwixt us?
Renvoie-les donc maintenant dans leurs maisons, et choisis quelques hommes pour t'accompagner, et viens avec moi à Ptolémais, car je te la donnerai, avec le reste des forteresses et des forces, et tous ceux qui ont quelque charge ; quant à moi, je m'en retournerai et je partirai, car c'est là la cause de ma venue.
Therefore send them now home again, and choose a few men to wait on thee, and come thou with me to Ptolemais, for I will give it thee, and the rest of the strong holds and forces, and all that have any charge: as for me, I will return and depart: for this is the cause of my coming.
Jonathan, le croyant, fit ce qu'il lui avait dit, et renvoya son armée, qui s'en retourna au pays de Judée.
So Jonathan believing him did as he bade him, and sent away his host, who went into the land of Judea.
Et il ne retint avec lui que trois mille hommes, dont il envoya deux mille en Galilée, et mille l'accompagnèrent.
And with himself he retained but three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.
Or, dès que Jonathan fut entré dans Ptolémais, ceux de Ptolémais fermèrent les portes et se saisirent de lui, et tous ceux qui étaient venus avec lui, ils les tuèrent par l'épée.
Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates and took him, and all them that came with him they slew with the sword.
Alors Tryphon envoya une armée de gens de pied et de cavaliers en Galilée et dans la grande plaine, pour détruire toute la compagnie de Jonathan.
Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain, to destroy all Jonathan’s company.
Mais quand ils apprirent que Jonathan et ceux qui étaient avec lui avaient été pris et tués, ils s'encouragèrent les uns les autres et marchèrent serrés, prêts à combattre.
But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain, they encouraged one another; and went close together, prepared to fight.
Ceux donc qui les poursuivaient, s'apercevant qu'ils étaient prêts à combattre pour leur vie, s'en retournèrent.
They therefore that followed upon them, perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives, turned back again.
C'est pourquoi ils revinrent tous en paix au pays de Judée ; là, ils pleurèrent Jonathan et ceux qui étaient avec lui, et ils furent dans une grande crainte ; et tout Israël fit de grandes lamentations.
Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably, and there they bewailed Jonathan, and them that were with him, and they were sore afraid; wherefore all Israel made great lamentation.
Alors tous les païens qui étaient autour d'eux cherchèrent à les détruire ; car ils disaient : Ils n'ont plus de chef, ni personne pour les aider ; maintenant donc, faisons-leur la guerre et effaçons leur mémoire d'entre les hommes.
Then all the heathen that were round about then sought to destroy them: for said they, They have no captain, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away their memorial from among men.
Or, quand Simon apprit que Tryphon avait rassemblé une grande armée pour envahir le pays de Judée et le détruire,
Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,
Et voyant que le peuple était dans un grand tremblement et dans la crainte, il monta à Jérusalem et rassembla le peuple,
And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,
Et il les exhorta, disant : Vous savez vous-mêmes quelles grandes choses moi, mes frères et la maison de mon père avons faites pour les lois et le sanctuaire, les batailles aussi et les afflictions que nous avons vues.
And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father’s house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.
C'est pourquoi tous mes frères ont été tués pour l'amour d'Israël, et je suis resté seul.
By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel’s sake, and I am left alone.
Maintenant donc, loin de moi la pensée d'épargner ma propre vie au temps de l'affliction ; car je ne vaux pas mieux que mes frères.
Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.
Certes, je vengerai ma nation, le sanctuaire, nos femmes et nos enfants ; car tous les païens se sont assemblés pour nous détruire par pure malice.
Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.
Or, dès que le peuple eut entendu ces paroles, son esprit se ranima.
Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.
Et ils répondirent à haute voix, disant : Tu seras notre chef à la place de Judas et de Jonathan ton frère.
And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.
Combats pour nous, et tout ce que tu nous commanderas, nous le ferons.
Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.
Il rassembla donc tous les hommes de guerre, se hâta d'achever les murs de Jérusalem et la fortifia tout autour.
So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.
Il envoya aussi Jonathan, fils d'Absalom, avec une grande armée à Joppé ; lequel, en ayant chassé ceux qui y étaient, y demeura.
Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.
Tryphon partit donc de Ptolémais avec une grande armée pour envahir le pays de Judée, et Jonathan était avec lui sous garde.
So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.
Mais Simon dressa ses tentes à Adida, vis-à-vis de la plaine.
But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.
Or, quand Tryphon sut que Simon s'était levé à la place de son frère Jonathan, et qu'il avait l'intention de lui livrer bataille, il lui envoya des messagers, disant :
Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,
Si nous retenons Jonathan ton frère, c'est pour l'argent qu'il doit au trésor du roi, pour les affaires dont il avait la charge.
Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king’s treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.
C'est pourquoi envoie maintenant cent talents d'argent et deux de ses fils en otages, afin que, lorsqu'il sera en liberté, il ne se révolte pas contre nous, et nous le laisserons aller.
Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.
Là-dessus Simon, bien qu'il sût qu'ils lui parlaient avec tromperie, envoya néanmoins l'argent et les enfants, de peur qu'il ne s'attirât une grande haine de la part du peuple ;
Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:
Qui aurait pu dire : C'est parce que je n'ai pas envoyé l'argent et les enfants que Jonathan est mort.
Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.
Il envoya donc les enfants et les cent talents ; mais Tryphon fut trompeur et ne relâcha point Jonathan.
So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.
Après cela, Tryphon vint pour envahir le pays et le détruire, en faisant le tour par le chemin qui mène à Adora ; mais Simon et son armée marchèrent contre lui en tout lieu où il allait.
And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.
Or, ceux qui étaient dans la citadelle envoyèrent des messagers à Tryphon, afin qu'il se hâtât de venir vers eux par le désert et qu'il leur envoyât des vivres.
Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.
C'est pourquoi Tryphon prépara toute sa cavalerie pour venir cette nuit-là ; mais il tomba une très grande neige, à cause de laquelle il ne vint pas. Il partit donc et vint au pays de Galaad.
Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.
Et quand il fut près de Bascama, il tua Jonathan, qui fut enterré là.
And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.
Ensuite Tryphon s'en retourna et alla dans son pays.
Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.
Alors Simon envoya prendre les os de Jonathan son frère, et les enterra à Modin, la ville de ses pères.
Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.
Et tout Israël fit sur lui de grandes lamentations, et le pleura pendant plusieurs jours.
And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.
Simon bâtit aussi un monument sur le sépulcre de son père et de ses frères, et l'éleva très haut à la vue, avec des pierres de taille par-derrière et par-devant.
Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.
De plus, il éleva sept pyramides, l'une vis-à-vis de l'autre, pour son père, pour sa mère et pour ses quatre frères.
Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.
Et il y fit des ornements artistiques, autour desquels il plaça de grandes colonnes, et sur les colonnes il fit sculpter toutes leurs armures pour une mémoire perpétuelle, et à côté des armures des navires gravés, afin qu'ils fussent vus de tous ceux qui naviguent sur la mer.
And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.
C'est là le sépulcre qu'il fit à Modin, et il subsiste encore aujourd'hui.
This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.
Or, Tryphon agit avec tromperie envers le jeune roi Antiochus, et le tua.
Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.
Et il régna à sa place, se couronna roi d'Asie, et causa une grande calamité au pays.
And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.
Alors Simon rebâtit les forteresses en Judée, les entoura de hautes tours, de grands murs, de portes et de barres, et y mit des vivres en réserve.
Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.
De plus, Simon choisit des hommes et les envoya au roi Démétrius, afin qu'il accordât une franchise au pays, parce que tout ce que Tryphon faisait n'était que pillage.
Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.
Le roi Démétrius lui répondit et lui écrivit en cette manière :
Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:
Le roi Démétrius à Simon le souverain sacrificateur et l'ami des rois, ainsi qu'aux anciens et à la nation des Juifs, salut.
King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
La couronne d'or et la robe d'écarlate que vous nous avez envoyées, nous les avons reçues ; et nous sommes prêts à faire avec vous une paix ferme, et à écrire à nos officiers pour confirmer les franchises que nous vous avons accordées.
The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.
Et toutes les alliances que nous avons faites avec vous demeureront fermes ; et les forteresses que vous avez bâties seront à vous.
And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.
Quant à toute erreur ou faute commise jusqu'à ce jour, nous la pardonnons, ainsi que l'impôt de la couronne que vous nous devez ; et s'il y avait quelque autre tribut payé à Jérusalem, il ne sera plus payé.
As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.
Et voyez qui parmi vous est propre à être de notre cour, qu'il y soit inscrit, et qu'il y ait paix entre nous.
And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.
Ainsi le joug des païens fut ôté d'Israël, en l'an cent soixante-dix.
Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.
Alors le peuple d'Israël commença à écrire dans ses actes et contrats : En la première année de Simon, le souverain sacrificateur, le gouverneur et le chef des Juifs.
Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.
En ces jours-là, Simon campa devant Gaza et l'assiégea tout autour ; il fit aussi une machine de guerre, l'approcha de la ville, frappa une certaine tour et s'en empara.
In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.
Et ceux qui étaient dans la machine sautèrent dans la ville ; sur quoi il y eut un grand tumulte dans la cité.
And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:
De sorte que les habitants de la ville déchirèrent leurs vêtements, montèrent sur les murs avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants, et crièrent à haute voix, suppliant Simon de leur accorder la paix.
Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.
Et ils dirent : Ne nous traite pas selon notre méchanceté, mais selon ta miséricorde.
And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.
Simon s'apaisa donc envers eux et ne les combattit plus ; mais il les chassa de la ville, purifia les maisons où étaient les idoles, et y entra avec des chants et des actions de grâces.
So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.
Oui, il en ôta toute souillure, y établit des hommes qui gardassent la loi, la rendit plus forte qu'elle n'était auparavant, et s'y bâtit une demeure.
Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.
Ceux aussi de la citadelle de Jérusalem étaient si étroitement serrés qu'ils ne pouvaient ni sortir, ni aller dans le pays, ni acheter, ni vendre ; c'est pourquoi ils furent dans une grande détresse par manque de vivres, et un grand nombre d'entre eux périrent par la famine.
They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.
Alors ils crièrent vers Simon, le suppliant de faire la paix avec eux ; ce qu'il leur accorda ; et lorsqu'il les eut fait sortir de là, il purifia la citadelle de ses souillures.
Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:
Et il y entra le vingt-troisième jour du second mois, en l'an cent soixante et onze, avec des actions de grâces, des branches de palmiers, au son des harpes, des cymbales et des lyres, avec des hymnes et des cantiques, parce qu'un grand ennemi avait été détruit en Israël.
And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.
Il ordonna aussi que ce jour fût célébré chaque année avec joie. De plus, il fortifia la colline du temple qui était près de la citadelle, et il y demeura lui-même avec sa compagnie.
He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.
Et quand Simon vit que Jean son fils était un homme vaillant, il le fit chef de toutes les armées ; et il demeura à Gazara.
And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.
Or, en l'an cent soixante-douze, le roi Démétrius rassembla ses forces et alla en Médie pour obtenir du secours afin de combattre Tryphon.
Now in the hundred threescore and twelfth year king Demetrius gathered his forces together, and went into Media to get him help to fight against Tryphone.
Mais quand Arsacès, roi de Perse et de Médie, apprit que Démétrius était entré sur son territoire, il envoya l'un de ses princes pour le prendre vivant.
But when Arsaces, the king of Persia and Media, heard that Demetrius was entered within his borders, he sent one of his princes to take him alive:
Celui-ci alla et défit l'armée de Démétrius, le prit et l'amena à Arsacès, par qui il fut mis sous garde.
Who went and smote the host of Demetrius, and took him, and brought him to Arsaces, by whom he was put in ward.
Quant au pays de Judée, il fut en paix tous les jours de Simon ; car il chercha le bien de sa nation, de sorte que son autorité et son honneur leur plurent toujours.
As for the land of Judea, that was quiet all the days of Simon; for he sought the good of his nation in such wise, as that evermore his authority and honour pleased them well.
Et comme il fut honorable dans tous ses actes, il le fut aussi en ce qu'il prit Joppé pour port, et s'ouvrit une entrée vers les îles de la mer.
And as he was honourable in all his acts, so in this, that he took Joppa for an haven, and made an entrance to the isles of the sea,
Il étendit les limites de sa nation et recouvra le pays.
And enlarged the bounds of his nation, and recovered the country,
Il rassembla un grand nombre de captifs, et domina sur Gazara, sur Bethsura et sur la citadelle, dont il ôta toute souillure ; et il n'y eut personne qui lui résistât.
And gathered together a great number of captives, and had the dominion of Gazera, and Bethsura, and the tower, out of the which he took all uncleanness, neither was there any that resisted him.
Alors ils cultivèrent leur terre en paix, et la terre donna ses produits, et les arbres de la plaine leurs fruits.
Then did they till their ground in peace, and the earth gave her increase, and the trees of the field their fruit.
Les vieillards s'asseyaient tous dans les places, s'entretenant des biens publics, et les jeunes gens se revêtaient d'habits glorieux et guerriers.
The ancient men sat all in the streets, communing together of good things, and the young men put on glorious and warlike apparel.
Il pourvut de vivres les villes et y établit toutes sortes de munitions, de sorte que son nom glorieux fut renommé jusqu'au bout du monde.
He provided victuals for the cities, and set in them all manner of munition, so that his honourable name was renowned unto the end of the world.
Il fit régner la paix dans le pays, et Israël se réjouit d'une grande joie.
He made peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy:
Car chacun s'asseyait sous sa vigne et sous son figuier, et il n'y avait personne pour les effrayer.
For every man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to fray them:
Il ne resta plus personne dans le pays pour les combattre ; les rois eux-mêmes furent renversés en ces jours-là.
Neither was there any left in the land to fight against them: yea, the kings themselves were overthrown in those days.
De plus, il fortifia tous ceux de son peuple qui étaient dans l'abaissement ; il rechercha la loi, et il ôta tout contempteur de la loi et tout méchant.
Moreover he strengthened all those of his people that were brought low: the law he searched out; and every contemner of the law and wicked person he took away.
Il embellit le sanctuaire et multiplia les vases du temple.
He beautified the sanctuary, and multiplied vessels of the temple.
Or, quand on apprit à Rome et jusqu'à Sparte que Jonathan était mort, on en fut fort affligé.
Now when it was heard at Rome, and as far as Sparta, that Jonathan was dead, they were very sorry.
Mais dès qu'ils apprirent que son frère Simon avait été fait souverain sacrificateur à sa place, et qu'il gouvernait le pays et les villes qui s'y trouvaient,
But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon was made high priest in his stead, and ruled the country, and the cities therein:
Ils lui écrivirent sur des tables d'airain pour renouveler l'amitié et l'alliance qu'ils avaient faites avec Judas et Jonathan ses frères.
They wrote unto him in tables of brass, to renew the friendship and league which they had made with Judas and Jonathan his brethren:
Ces écrits furent lus devant l'assemblée à Jérusalem.
Which writings were read before the congregation at Jerusalem.
Et voici la copie des lettres que les Lacédémoniens envoyèrent : Les chefs des Lacédémoniens, avec la ville, à Simon le souverain sacrificateur, aux anciens, aux prêtres et au reste du peuple des Juifs, nos frères, salut.
And this is the copy of the letters that the Lacedemonians sent; The rulers of the Lacedemonians, with the city, unto Simon the high priest, and the elders, and priests, and residue of the people of the Jews, our brethren, send greeting:
Les ambassadeurs qui ont été envoyés vers notre peuple nous ont informés de votre gloire et de votre honneur ; c'est pourquoi nous nous sommes réjouis de leur venue.
The ambassadors that were sent unto our people certified us of your glory and honour: wherefore we were glad of their coming,
Et nous avons enregistré ce qu'ils ont dit dans le conseil du peuple, en cette manière : Numénius, fils d'Antiochus, et Antipater, fils de Jason, ambassadeurs des Juifs, sont venus vers nous pour renouveler l'amitié qu'ils avaient avec nous.
And did register the things that they spake in the council of the people in this manner; Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, the Jews’ ambassadors, came unto us to renew the friendship they had with us.
Et il a plu au peuple de recevoir ces hommes honorablement, et de mettre la copie de leur ambassade dans les registres publics, afin que le peuple des Lacédémoniens en eût un mémorial ; de plus, nous en avons écrit une copie à Simon le souverain sacrificateur.
And it pleased the people to entertain the men honourably, and to put the copy of their ambassage in publick records, to the end the people of the Lacedemonians might have a memorial thereof: furthermore we have written a copy thereof unto Simon the high priest.
Après cela, Simon envoya Numénius à Rome avec un grand bouclier d'or du poids de mille mines, pour confirmer l'alliance avec eux.
After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a great shield of gold of a thousand pound weight to confirm the league with them.
Ce qu'ayant appris, le peuple dit : Quelle reconnaissance rendrons-nous à Simon et à ses fils ?
Whereof when the people heard, they said, What thanks shall we give to Simon and his sons?
Car lui, ses frères et la maison de son père ont affermi Israël, ont repoussé par le combat leurs ennemis loin d'eux, et ont affermi leur liberté.
For he and his brethren and the house of his father have established Israel, and chased away in fight their enemies from them, and confirmed their liberty.
Ils l'écrivirent donc sur des tables d'airain, qu'ils placèrent sur des piliers au mont Sion ; et voici la copie de l'écrit : Le dix-huitième jour du mois d'Elul, en l'an cent soixante-douze, qui est la troisième année de Simon le souverain sacrificateur,
So then they wrote it in tables of brass, which they set upon pillars in mount Sion: and this is the copy of the writing; The eighteenth day of the month Elul, in the hundred threescore and twelfth year, being the third year of Simon the high priest,
À Saramel, dans la grande assemblée des prêtres, du peuple, des chefs de la nation et des anciens du pays, ces choses nous ont été notifiées.
At Saramel in the great congregation of the priests, and people, and rulers of the nation, and elders of the country, were these things notified unto us.
Attendu que souvent il y a eu des guerres dans le pays, au cours desquelles, pour le maintien de leur sanctuaire et de la loi, Simon, fils de Mattathias, de la postérité de Jarib, avec ses frères, se sont exposés au péril, et résistant aux ennemis de leur nation, ont fait à leur nation un grand honneur.
Forasmuch as oftentimes there have been wars in the country, wherein for the maintenance of their sanctuary, and the law, Simon the son of Mattathias, of the posterity of Jarib, together with his brethren, put themselves in jeopardy, and resisting the enemies of their nation did their nation great honour:

(For after that Jonathan, having gathered his nation together, and been their high priest, was added to his people,

Their enemies prepared to invade their country, that they might destroy it, and lay hands on the sanctuary:
En ce temps-là, Simon se leva et combattit pour sa nation, dépensa beaucoup de ses propres biens, arma les hommes vaillants de sa nation et leur donna une solde,
At which time Simon rose up, and fought for his nation, and spent much of his own substance, and armed the valiant men of his nation and gave them wages,
Et il fortifia les villes de Judée, ainsi que Bethsura qui est aux frontières de la Judée, où se trouvait auparavant l'armure des ennemis ; mais il y mit une garnison de Juifs.
And fortified the cities of Judea, together with Bethsura, that lieth upon the borders of Judea, where the armour of the enemies had been before; but he set a garrison of Jews there:
De plus, il fortifia Joppé qui est sur la mer, et Gazara qui confine à Azot, où les ennemis demeuraient auparavant ; mais il y plaça des Juifs et les fournit de toutes les choses nécessaires pour leur réparation.)
Moreover he fortified Joppa, which lieth upon the sea, and Gazera, that bordereth upon Azotus, where the enemies had dwelt before: but he placed Jews there, and furnished them with all things convenient for the reparation thereof.)
Le peuple, célébrant donc les actes de Simon et la gloire qu'il pensait apporter à sa nation, le fit son gouverneur et son souverain sacrificateur, parce qu'il avait fait toutes ces choses, et pour la justice et la foi qu'il gardait à sa nation, et parce qu'il cherchait par tous les moyens à exalter son peuple.
The people therefore sang the acts of Simon, and unto what glory he thought to bring his nation, made him their governor and chief priest, because he had done all these things, and for the justice and faith which he kept to his nation, and for that he sought by all means to exalt his people.
Car en son temps les choses prospérèrent entre ses mains, de sorte que les païens furent ôtés de leur pays, ainsi que ceux qui étaient dans la cité de David à Jérusalem, qui s'étaient fait une citadelle d'où ils sortaient pour souiller tout autour du sanctuaire et faire un grand mal dans le lieu saint.
For in his time things prospered in his hands, so that the heathen were taken out of their country, and they also that were in the city of David in Jerusalem, who had made themselves a tower, out of which they issued, and polluted all about the sanctuary, and did much hurt in the holy place:
Mais il y plaça des Juifs, et la fortifia pour la sûreté du pays et de la ville, et il releva les murs de Jérusalem.
But he placed Jews therein. and fortified it for the safety of the country and the city, and raised up the walls of Jerusalem.
Le roi Démétrius le confirma aussi dans le souverain sacerdoce selon ces choses,
King Demetrius also confirmed him in the high priesthood according to those things,
Et il le mit au nombre de ses amis, et l'honora d'une grande gloire.
And made him one of his friends, and honoured him with great honour.
Car il avait entendu dire que les Romains avaient appelé les Juifs leurs amis, leurs confédérés et leurs frères, et qu'ils avaient reçu honorablement les ambassadeurs de Simon.
For he had heard say, that the Romans had called the Jews their friends and confederates and brethren; and that they had entertained the ambassadors of Simon honourably;
Et que les Juifs et les prêtres avaient consenti que Simon fût leur gouverneur et leur souverain sacrificateur à perpétuité, jusqu'à ce qu'il s'élevât un prophète fidèle.
Also that the Jews and priests were well pleased that Simon should be their governor and high priest for ever, until there should arise a faithful prophet;
Et qu'il fût leur capitaine, et qu'il eût la charge du sanctuaire, pour établir des hommes sur leurs travaux, sur le pays, sur l'armure et sur les forteresses ; qu'il eût, dis-je, la charge du sanctuaire.
Moreover that he should be their captain, and should take charge of the sanctuary, to set them over their works, and over the country, and over the armour, and over the fortresses, that, I say, he should take charge of the sanctuary;
Qu'en outre, il fût obéi de chacun, et que tous les actes dans le pays fussent faits en son nom, et qu'il fût revêtu de pourpre et portât de l'or.
Beside this, that he should be obeyed of every man, and that all the writings in the country should be made in his name, and that he should be clothed in purple, and wear gold:
Qu'il ne fût permis à personne, soit du peuple, soit des prêtres, d'enfreindre aucune de ces choses, ni de contredire ses paroles, ni de convoquer une assemblée dans le pays sans lui, ni d'être revêtu de pourpre, ni de porter une agrafe d'or.
Also that it should be lawful for none of the people or priests to break any of these things, or to gainsay his words, or to gather an assembly in the country without him, or to be clothed in purple, or wear a buckle of gold;
Et que quiconque ferait autrement, ou enfreindrait l'une de ces choses, serait puni.
And whosoever should do otherwise, or break any of these things, he should be punished.
Ainsi, tout le peuple voulut traiter avec Simon et faire comme il a été dit.
Thus it liked all the people to deal with Simon, and to do as hath been said.
Simon accepta donc, et consentit à être souverain sacrificateur, capitaine et gouverneur des Juifs et des prêtres, et à les défendre tous.
Then Simon accepted hereof, and was well pleased to be high priest, and captain and governor of the Jews and priests, and to defend them all.
On ordonna donc que cet écrit fût mis sur des tables d'airain, et qu'elles fussent placées dans l'enceinte du sanctuaire en un lieu visible.
So they commanded that this writing should be put in tables of brass, and that they should be set up within the compass of the sanctuary in a conspicuous place;
Et que des copies en fussent déposées dans le trésor, afin que Simon et ses fils les eussent.
Also that the copies thereof should be laid up in the treasury, to the end that Simon and his sons might have them.
De plus, Antiochus, fils du roi Démétrius, envoya des îles de la mer des lettres à Simon, prêtre et prince des Juifs, et à tout le peuple.
Moreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent letters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews, and to all the people;
Dont voici la teneur : Le roi Antiochus à Simon, le souverain sacrificateur et prince de sa nation, et au peuple des Juifs, salut.
The contents whereof were these: King Antiochus to Simon the high priest and prince of his nation, and to the people of the Jews, greeting:
Attendu que certains hommes pervers se sont emparés du royaume de nos pères, et que mon dessein est de le revendiquer afin de le rétablir dans son ancien état, et qu'à cette fin j'ai rassemblé une multitude de soldats étrangers et préparé des navires de guerre.
Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers, and my purpose is to challenge it again, that I may restore it to the old estate, and to that end have gathered a multitude of foreign soldiers together, and prepared ships of war;
Mon intention étant aussi de parcourir le pays, afin de me venger de ceux qui l'ont détruit et qui ont rendu désertes beaucoup de villes dans le royaume.
My meaning also being to go through the country, that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it, and made many cities in the kingdom desolate:

Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations which the kings before me granted thee, and whatsoever gifts besides they granted.

I give thee leave also to coin money for thy country with thine own stamp.
Et quant à Jérusalem et au sanctuaire, qu'ils soient libres ; et toute l'armure que tu as faite, et les forteresses que tu as bâties et que tu tiens entre tes mains, qu'elles te restent.
And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary, let them be free; and all the armour that thou hast made, and fortresses that thou hast built, and keepest in thine hands, let them remain unto thee.
Et si quelque chose est dû, ou sera dû au roi, qu'il t'en soit fait remise dès maintenant et à jamais.
And if anything be, or shall be, owing to the king, let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore.
De plus, quand nous aurons recouvré notre royaume, nous t'honorerons, toi, ta nation et ton temple, d'une grande gloire, de sorte que votre honneur sera connu par tout le monde.
Furthermore, when we have obtained our kingdom, we will honour thee, and thy nation, and thy temple, with great honour, so that your honour shall be known throughout the world.
En l'an cent soixante-quatorze, Antiochus entra dans le pays de ses pères ; alors toutes les forces s'assemblèrent vers lui, de sorte qu'il en resta peu avec Tryphon.
In the hundred threescore and fourteenth year went Antiochus into the land of his fathers: at which time all the forces came together unto him, so that few were left with Tryphon.

Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus, he fled unto Dora, which lieth by the sea side:

For he saw that troubles came upon him all at once, and that his forces had forsaken him.
Alors Antiochus campa devant Dora, ayant avec lui cent vingt mille hommes de guerre et huit mille cavaliers.
Then camped Antiochus against Dora, having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war, and eight thousand horsemen.
Et ayant investi la ville, et approché les navires du côté de la ville sur la mer, il pressa la cité par terre et par mer, et ne laissa personne sortir ni entrer.
And when he had compassed the city round about, and joined ships close to the town on the sea side, he vexed the city by land and by sea, neither suffered he any to go out or in.
Entre-temps, Numénius et sa compagnie revinrent de Rome, ayant des lettres pour les rois et les pays, dans lesquelles étaient écrites ces choses :
In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome, having letters to the kings and countries; wherein were written these things:

Les ambassadeurs des Juifs, nos amis et confédérés, sont venus vers nous pour renouveler l'ancienne amitié et l'alliance, étant envoyés par Simon le souverain sacrificateur et par le peuple des Juifs.
The Jews’ ambassadors, our friends and confederates, came unto us to renew the old friendship and league, being sent from Simon the high priest, and from the people of the Jews:
Et ils ont apporté un bouclier d'or de mille mines.
And they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound.
Nous avons donc jugé bon d'écrire aux rois et aux pays, afin qu'ils ne leur fassent aucun mal, et qu'ils ne combattent ni contre eux, ni contre leurs villes, ni contre leurs pays, et qu'ils n'aident point leurs ennemis contre eux.
We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countries, that they should do them no harm, nor fight against them, their cities, or countries, nor yet aid their enemies against them.
Il nous a aussi semblé bon de recevoir d'eux le bouclier.
It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them.
Si donc il y a des hommes pervers qui se sont enfuis de leur pays vers vous, livrez-les à Simon le souverain sacrificateur, afin qu'il les punisse selon leur propre loi.
If therefore there be any pestilent fellows, that have fled from their country unto you, deliver them unto Simon the high priest, that he may punish them according to their own law.
Il écrivit les mêmes choses au roi Démétrius, à Attale, à Ariarathe et à Arsacès,
The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king, and Attalus, to Ariarathes, and Arsaces,
Et à tous les pays, à Sampsamé, aux Lacédémoniens, à Délos, à Myndos, à Sicyone, à la Carie, à Samos, à la Pamphylie, à la Lycie, à Halicarnasse, à Rhodes, à Arados, à Cos, à Sidé, à Arados, à Gortyne, à Cnide, à Chypre et à Cyrène.
And to all the countries and to Sampsames, and the Lacedemonians, and to Delus, and Myndus, and Sicyon, and Caria, and Samos, and Pamphylia, and Lycia, and Halicarnassus, and Rhodus, and Aradus, and Cos, and Side, and Aradus, and Gortyna, and Cnidus, and Cyprus, and Cyrene.
Et ils en envoyèrent la copie à Simon le souverain sacrificateur.
And the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest.
Ainsi le roi Antiochus campa devant Dora le second jour, l'attaquant sans cesse et construisant des machines, par lesquelles il enferma Tryphon, de sorte qu'il ne pouvait ni sortir ni entrer.
So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day, assaulting it continually, and making engines, by which means he shut up Tryphon, that he could neither go out nor in.
En ce temps-là, Simon lui envoya deux mille hommes choisis pour le secourir, avec de l'argent, de l'or et beaucoup d'armes.
At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him; silver also, and gold, and much armour.
Néanmoins, il ne voulut pas les recevoir, mais il rompit toutes les alliances qu'il avait faites avec lui auparavant, et se rendit étranger à lui.
Nevertheless he would not receive them, but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore, and became strange unto him.
De plus, il lui envoya Athénobius, l'un de ses amis, pour traiter avec lui et dire : Vous retenez Joppé et Gazara, avec la citadelle qui est à Jérusalem, lesquelles sont des villes de mon royaume.
Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius, one of his friends, to commune with him, and say, Ye withhold Joppa and Gazera; with the tower that is in Jerusalem, which are cities of my realm.
Vous en avez ravagé les frontières, vous avez fait un grand mal dans le pays, et vous vous êtes emparés de la domination de plusieurs lieux dans mon royaume.
The borders thereof ye have wasted, and done great hurt in the land, and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom.
Maintenant donc, livrez les villes que vous avez prises, et les tributs des lieux dont vous vous êtes emparés hors des frontières de la Judée.
Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken, and the tributes of the places, whereof ye have gotten dominion without the borders of Judea:
Ou bien, donnez-moi pour elles cinq cents talents d'argent ; et pour le dommage que vous avez causé, et pour les tributs des villes, cinq cents autres talents ; sinon, nous viendrons vous faire la guerre.
Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver; and for the harm that ye have done, and the tributes of the cities, other five hundred talents: if not, we will come and fight against you
Athénobius, l'ami du roi, vint donc à Jérusalem ; et quand il vit la gloire de Simon, le buffet de vaisselle d'or et d'argent, et son grand cortège, il fut étonné et lui rapporta le message du roi.
So Athenobius the king’s friend came to Jerusalem: and when he saw the glory of Simon, and the cupboard of gold and silver plate, and his great attendance, he was astonished, and told him the king’s message.
Alors Simon répondit et lui dit : Nous n'avons point pris la terre d'autrui, ni ne retenons ce qui appartient à d'autres, mais l'héritage de nos pères, que nos ennemis avaient injustement possédé pendant un certain temps.
Then answered Simon, and said unto him, We have neither taken other men’s land, nor holden that which appertaineth to others, but the inheritance of our fathers, which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time.
C'est pourquoi, en ayant trouvé l'occasion, nous retenons l'héritage de nos pères.
Wherefore we, having opportunity, hold the inheritance of our fathers.
Et quant à ce que tu demandes Joppé et Gazara, bien qu'elles aient fait un grand mal au peuple de notre pays, nous te donnerons cent talents pour elles. À cela Athénobius ne lui répondit pas un mot ;
And whereas thou demandest Joppa and Gazera, albeit they did great harm unto the people in our country, yet will we give thee an hundred talents for them. Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word;
Mais il s'en retourna avec colère vers le roi, et lui fit rapport de ces paroles, de la gloire de Simon et de tout ce qu'il avait vu ; sur quoi le roi fut transporté d'une grande colère.
But returned in a rage to the king, and made report unto him of these speeches, and of the glory of Simon, and of all that he had seen: whereupon the king was exceeding wroth.
Entre-temps, Tryphon s'enfuit par navire à Orthosias.
In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias.
Alors le roi établit Cendébée capitaine de la côte maritime, et lui donna une armée de gens de pied et de cavaliers,
Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea coast, and gave him an host of footmen and horsemen,
Et il lui ordonna de faire marcher son armée vers la Judée ; il lui ordonna aussi de rebâtir Cédron, de fortifier les portes et de faire la guerre au peuple ; mais pour le roi lui-même, il poursuivit Tryphon.
And commanded him to remove his host toward Judea; also he commanded him to build up Cedron, and to fortify the gates, and to war against the people; but as for the king himself, he pursued Tryphon.
Cendébée vint donc à Jamnia et commença à provoquer le peuple, à envahir la Judée, à faire le peuple prisonnier et à tuer.
So Cendebeus came to Jamnia and began to provoke the people and to invade Judea, and to take the people prisoners, and slay them.
Et ayant rebâti Cédron, il y mit des cavaliers et une armée de gens de pied, afin qu'en sortant ils pussent faire des incursions sur les chemins de la Judée, comme le roi le lui avait ordonné.
And when he had built up Cedrou, he set horsemen there, and an host of footmen, to the end that issuing out they might make outroads upon the ways of Judea, as the king had commanded him.
Jean monta de Gazara et annonça à Simon, son père, ce que Cendébée avait fait.
Then came up John from Gazera, and told Simon his father what Cendebeus had done.
Alors Simon appela ses deux fils aînés, Judas et Jean, et leur dit : Moi, mes frères et la maison de mon père, nous avons combattu les ennemis d'Israël depuis notre jeunesse jusqu'à ce jour, et le succès a couronné nos mains, de sorte que nous avons délivré Israël maintes fois.
Wherefore Simon called his two eldest sons, Judas and John, and said unto them, I, and my brethren, and my father’s house, have ever from my youth unto this day fought against the enemies of Israel; and things have prospered so well in our hands, that we have delivered Israel oftentimes.
Mais maintenant je suis vieux, et vous, par la miséricorde de Dieu, vous êtes d'un âge suffisant : soyez donc à ma place et à celle de mon frère, et allez combattre pour notre nation, et que le secours du ciel soit avec vous.
But now I am old, and ye, by God’s mercy, are of a sufficient age: be ye instead of me and my brother, and go and fight for our nation, and the help from heaven be with you.
Il choisit dans le pays vingt mille hommes de guerre avec des cavaliers, qui marchèrent contre Cendébée, et ils passèrent la nuit à Modin.
So he chose out of the country twenty thousand men of war with horsemen, who went out against Cendebeus, and rested that night at Modin.
S'étant levés le matin, ils s'avancèrent dans la plaine, et voici qu'une armée nombreuse, composée de fantassins et de cavaliers, vint au-devant d'eux ; mais un torrent les séparait.
And when as they rose in the morning, and went into the plain, behold, a mighty great host both of footmen and horsemen came against them: howbeit there was a water brook betwixt them.
Il campa avec son peuple en face d'eux ; et voyant que le peuple craignait de traverser le torrent, il passa le premier, et ses hommes, le voyant, passèrent après lui.
So he and his people pitched over against them: and when he saw that the people were afraid to go over the water brook, he went first over himself, and then the men seeing him passed through after him.
Cela fait, il divisa ses troupes et plaça les cavaliers au milieu des fantassins, car la cavalerie des ennemis était fort nombreuse.
That done, he divided his men, and set the horsemen in the midst of the footmen: for the enemies’ horsemen were very many.
Alors ils sonnèrent des trompettes sacrées, et Cendébée fut mis en fuite avec son armée ; beaucoup d'entre eux tombèrent morts, et le reste se réfugia dans la forteresse.
Then sounded they with the holy trumpets: whereupon Cendebeus and his host were put to flight, so that many of them were slain, and the remnant gat them to the strong hold.
En ce temps-là, Judas, frère de Jean, fut blessé ; mais Jean les poursuivit jusqu'à Cédron, que Cendébée avait bâtie.
At that time was Judas John’s brother wounded; but John still followed after them, until he came to Cedron, which Cendebeus had built.
Ils s'enfuirent jusqu'aux tours qui sont dans les champs d'Azot, et Jean les brûla par le feu ; il en périt environ deux mille hommes. Après cela, il retourna en paix au pays de Judée.
So they fled even unto the towers in the fields of Azotus; wherefore he burned it with fire: so that there were slain of them about two thousand men. Afterward he returned into the land of Judea in peace.
Or, dans la plaine de Jéricho, Ptolémée, fils d'Abubus, avait été établi commandant, et il possédait beaucoup d'argent et d'or ;
Moreover in the plain of Jericho was Ptolemeus the son of Abubus made captain, and he had abundance of silver and gold:
car il était gendre du souverain sacrificateur.
For he was the high priest’s son in law.
Son cœur s'étant élevé, il conçut le dessein de se rendre maître du pays, et il dressa des embûches à Simon et à ses fils pour les faire périr.
Wherefore his heart being lifted up, he thought to get the country to himself, and thereupon consulted deceitfully against Simon and his sons to destroy them.
Simon, qui visitait les villes du pays et veillait à leur bonne administration, descendit à Jéricho avec ses fils, Mattathias et Judas, l'an cent soixante-dix-sept, au onzième mois, qui est le mois de Sabat.
Now Simon was visiting the cities that were in the country, and taking care for the good ordering of them; at which time he came down himself to Jericho with his sons, Mattathias and Judas, in the hundred threescore and seventeenth year, in the eleventh month, called Sabat:
Le fils d'Abubus les reçut avec perfidie dans une petite forteresse nommée Doc, qu'il avait bâtie, et il leur fit un grand festin ; mais il y avait caché des hommes.
Where the son of Abubus receiving them deceitfully into a little hold, called Docus, which he had built, made them a great banquet: howbeit he had hid men there.
Lorsque Simon et ses fils eurent beaucoup bu, Ptolémée se leva avec ses gens, ils prirent leurs armes, se jetèrent sur Simon dans la salle du festin et le tuèrent, ainsi que ses deux fils et quelques-uns de ses serviteurs.
So when Simon and his sons had drunk largely, Ptolemee and his men rose up, and took their weapons, and came upon Simon into the banqueting place, and slew him, and his two sons, and certain of his servants.
Il commit ainsi une grande trahison et rendit le mal pour le bien.
In which doing he committed a great treachery, and recompensed evil for good.
Ptolémée écrivit ces choses et les envoya au roi, afin qu'il lui envoyât une armée pour lui prêter secours, et qu'il lui livrât le pays et les villes.
Then Ptolemee wrote these things, and sent to the king, that he should send him an host to aid him, and he would deliver him the country and cities.
Il en envoya d'autres à Gazara pour faire périr Jean ; et il envoya des lettres aux tribuns pour qu'ils vinssent à lui, afin de leur donner de l'argent, de l'or et des présents.
He sent others also to Gazera to kill John: and unto the tribunes he sent letters to come unto him, that he might give them silver, and gold, and rewards.
Il en envoya d'autres encore pour s'emparer de Jérusalem et de la montagne du temple.
And others he sent to take Jerusalem, and the mountain of the temple.
Mais quelqu'un courut en hâte à Gazara et annonça à Jean que son père et ses frères avaient été tués, et il ajouta : Ptolémée a envoyé aussi pour te faire mourir.
Now one had run afore to Gazera and told John that his father and brethren were slain, and, quoth he, Ptolemee hath sent to slay thee also.
À cette nouvelle, Jean fut frappé de stupeur ; il fit arrêter les hommes qui venaient pour le perdre et les fit mourir, car il savait qu'ils cherchaient à lui ôter la vie.
Hereof when he heard, he was sore astonished: so he laid hands on them that were come to destroy him, and slew them; for he knew that they sought to make him away.
Quant au reste des actions de Jean, à ses guerres, aux exploits qu'il a accomplis, aux murs qu'il a bâtis et à tous ses actes,
As concerning the rest of the acts of John, and his wars, and worthy deeds which he did, and the building of the walls which he made, and his doings,
voici que tout cela est écrit dans le livre des annales de son pontificat, depuis le temps qu'il fut établi souverain sacrificateur après son père.
Behold, these are written in the chronicles of his priesthood, from the time he was made high priest after his father.
