The second book of the prophet Esdras, the son of Saraias, the son of Azarias, the son of Helchias, the son of Sadamias, the son of Sadoc, the son of Achitob,
Fils d'Achias, fils de Phinées, fils d'Héli, fils d'Amarias, fils d'Aziei, fils de Marimoth, fils de Borith, fils d'Abisei, fils de Phinées, fils d'Éléazar,
The son of Achias, the son of Phinees, the son of Heli, the son of Amarias, the son of Aziei, the son of Marimoth, the son of And he spake unto the of Borith, the son of Abisei, the son of Phinees, the son of Eleazar,
Fils d'Aaron, de la tribu de Lévi ; lequel fut captif au pays des Mèdes, sous le règne d'Artaxerxès, roi des Perses.
The son of Aaron, of the tribe of Levi; which was captive in the land of the Medes, in the reign of Artexerxes king of the Persians.
Et la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée, disant :
And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
Va, et montre à mon peuple ses actions pécheresses, et à leurs enfants les iniquités qu'ils ont commises contre moi ; afin qu'ils les racontent aux enfants de leurs enfants :
Go thy way, and shew my people their sinful deeds, and their children their wickedness which they have done against me; that they may tell their children’s children:
Car les péchés de leurs pères se sont accrus en eux : car ils m'ont oublié, et ont sacrifié à des dieux étrangers.
Because the sins of their fathers are increased in them: for they have forgotten me, and have offered unto strange gods.
N'est-ce pas moi qui les ai fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude ? mais ils m'ont provoqué à la colère, et ont méprisé mes conseils.
Am not I even he that brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage? but they have provoked me unto wrath, and despised my counsels.
Arrache donc les cheveux de ta tête, et jette sur eux tous les maux, car ils n'ont pas obéi à ma loi, mais c'est un peuple rebelle.
Pull thou off then the hair of thy head, and cast all evil upon them, for they have not been obedient unto my law, but it is a rebellious people.
Jusques à quand les supporterai-je, moi qui leur ai fait tant de bien ?
How long shall I forbear them, into whom I have done so much good?
J'ai détruit beaucoup de rois à cause d'eux ; j'ai frappé Pharaon avec ses serviteurs et toute sa puissance.
Many kings have I destroyed for their sakes; Pharaoh with his servants and all his power have I smitten down.
J'ai détruit toutes les nations devant eux, et en Orient j'ai dispersé les peuples de deux provinces, savoir Tyr et Sidon, et j'ai tué tous leurs ennemis.
All the nations have I destroyed before them, and in the east I have scattered the people of two provinces, even of Tyrus and Sidon, and have slain all their enemies.
Parle-leur donc, en disant : Ainsi parle le Seigneur,
Speak thou therefore unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord,
Je vous ai fait passer par la mer, et dès le commencement je vous ai ouvert un passage large et sûr ; je vous ai donné Moïse pour chef, et Aaron pour sacrificateur.
I led you through the sea and in the beginning gave you a large and safe passage; I gave you Moses for a leader, and Aaron for a priest.
Je vous ai donné la lumière dans une colonne de feu, et j'ai fait de grands prodiges parmi vous ; pourtant vous m'avez oublié, dit le Seigneur.
I gave you light in a pillar of fire, and great wonders have I done among you; yet have ye forgotten me, saith the Lord.
Ainsi parle le Seigneur Tout-Puissant : Les cailles vous furent un signe ; je vous ai donné des tentes pour votre sauvegarde : néanmoins vous y avez murmuré,
Thus saith the Almighty Lord, The quails were as a token to you; I gave you tents for your safeguard: nevertheless ye murmured there,
Et vous n'avez pas triomphé en mon nom pour la destruction de vos ennemis, mais jusqu'à ce jour vous murmurez encore.
And triumphed not in my name for the destruction of your enemies, but ever to this day do ye yet murmur.
Où sont les bienfaits que je vous ai faits ? quand vous aviez faim et soif dans le désert, n'avez-vous pas crié vers moi,
Where are the benefits that I have done for you? when ye were hungry and thirsty in the wilderness, did ye not cry unto me,
Disant : Pourquoi nous as-tu amenés dans ce désert pour nous faire mourir ? il eût mieux valu pour nous servir les Égyptiens, que de mourir dans ce désert.
Saying, Why hast thou brought us into this wilderness to kill us? it had been better for us to have served the Egyptians, than to die in this wilderness.
Alors j'eus pitié de vos gémissements, et je vous donnai la manne à manger ; ainsi vous avez mangé le pain des anges.
Then had I pity upon your mournings, and gave you manna to eat; so ye did eat angels’ bread.
Quand vous aviez soif, n'ai-je pas fendu le rocher, et les eaux ont coulé à satiété ? contre la chaleur, je vous ai couverts du feuillage des arbres.
When ye were thirsty, did I not cleave the rock, and waters flowed out to your fill? for the heat I covered you with the leaves of the trees.
J'ai partagé entre vous une terre fertile, j'ai chassé devant vous les Cananéens, les Phéréziens et les Philistins : que ferai-je encore de plus pour vous ? dit le Seigneur.
I divided among you a fruitful land, I cast out the Canaanites, the Pherezites, and the Philistines, before you: what shall I yet do more for you? saith the Lord.
Ainsi parle le Seigneur Tout-Puissant : Quand vous étiez dans le désert, au fleuve des Amoréens, ayant soif et blasphémant mon nom,
Thus saith the Almighty Lord, When ye were in the wilderness, in the river of the Amorites, being athirst, and blaspheming my name,
Je ne vous ai pas envoyé le feu pour vos blasphèmes, mais j'ai jeté un bois dans l'eau, et j'ai rendu le fleuve doux.
I gave you not fire for your blasphemies, but cast a tree in the water, and made the river sweet.
Que te ferai-je, ô Jacob ? toi, Juda, tu n'as pas voulu m'obéir : je me tournerai vers d'autres nations, et c'est à elles que je donnerai mon nom, afin qu'elles gardent mes ordonnances.
What shall I do unto thee, O Jacob? thou, Juda, wouldest not obey me: I will turn me to other nations, and unto those will I give my name, that they may keep my statutes.
Puisque vous m'avez abandonné, je vous abandonnerai aussi ; quand vous désirerez que je vous sois favorable, je n'aurai aucune miséricorde pour vous.
Seeing ye have forsaken me, I will forsake you also; when ye desire me to be gracious unto you, I shall have no mercy upon you.
Toutes les fois que vous m'invoquerez, je ne vous exaucerai pas : car vous avez souillé vos mains de sang, et vos pieds sont prompts à commettre le meurtre.
Whensoever ye shall call upon me, I will not hear you: for ye have defiled your hands with blood, and your feet are swift to commit manslaughter.
Ce n'est pas moi que vous avez abandonné, mais vous-mêmes, dit le Seigneur.
Ye have not as it were forsaken me, but your own selves, saith the Lord.
Ainsi parle le Seigneur Tout-Puissant : Ne vous ai-je pas suppliés comme un père ses fils, comme une mère ses filles, et comme une nourrice ses petits enfants,
Thus saith the Almighty Lord, Have I not prayed you as a father his sons, as a mother her daughters, and a nurse her young babes,
Afin que vous soyez mon peuple, et que je sois votre Dieu ; que vous soyez mes enfants, et que je sois votre père ?
That ye would be my people, and I should be your God; that ye would be my children, and I should be your father?
Je vous ai rassemblés, comme une poule rassemble ses poussins sous ses ailes : mais maintenant, que vous ferai-je ? Je vous rejetterai de devant ma face.
I gathered you together, as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings: but now, what shall I do unto you? I will cast you out from my face.
Quand vous m'offrirez des sacrifices, je détournerai ma face de vous : car j'ai rejeté vos jours de fête solennelle, vos nouvelles lunes et vos circoncisions.
When ye offer unto me, I will turn my face from you: for your solemn feastdays, your new moons, and your circumcisions, have I forsaken.
Je vous ai envoyé mes serviteurs les prophètes, que vous avez saisis et tués, et dont vous avez mis les corps en pièces ; je redemanderai leur sang de vos mains, dit le Seigneur.
I sent unto you my servants the prophets, whom ye have taken and slain, and torn their bodies in pieces, whose blood I will require of your hands, saith the Lord.
Ainsi parle le Seigneur Tout-Puissant : Votre maison est déserte, je vous chasserai comme le vent chasse le chaume.
Thus saith the Almighty Lord, Your house is desolate, I will cast you out as the wind doth stubble.
Et vos enfants ne seront pas féconds ; car ils ont méprisé mon commandement, et ont fait ce qui est mal devant moi.
And your children shall not be fruitful; for they have despised my commandment, and done the thing that is an evil before me.
Je donnerai vos maisons à un peuple qui doit venir ; lequel, n'ayant pas entendu parler de moi, croira pourtant en moi ; à qui je n'ai montré aucun signe, et qui pourtant fera ce que j'ai commandé.
Your houses will I give to a people that shall come; which not having heard of me yet shall believe me; to whom I have shewed no signs, yet they shall do that I have commanded them.
Ils n'ont vu aucun prophète, pourtant ils se souviendront de leurs péchés et les reconnaîtront.
They have seen no prophets, yet they shall call their sins to remembrance, and acknowledge them.
Je prends à témoin la grâce du peuple à venir, dont les petits enfants tressaillent de joie : et bien qu'ils ne m'aient pas vu des yeux du corps, ils croient pourtant en esprit à ce que je dis.
I take to witness the grace of the people to come, whose little ones rejoice in gladness: and though they have not seen me with bodily eyes, yet in spirit they believe the thing that I say.
Et maintenant, frère, regarde quelle gloire ; et vois le peuple qui vient de l'Orient :
And now, brother, behold what glory; and see the people that come from the east:
Auxquels je donnerai pour chefs Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, Osée, Amos et Michée, Joël, Abdias et Jonas,
Unto whom I will give for leaders, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Oseas, Amos, and Micheas, Joel, Abdias, and Jonas,
Nahum et Habacuc, Sophonie, Aggée, Zacharie et Malachie, lequel est aussi appelé un ange du Seigneur.
Nahum, and Abacuc, Sophonias, Aggeus, Zachary, and Malachy, which is called also an angel of the Lord.
Ainsi parle le Seigneur : J'ai fait sortir ce peuple de la servitude, et je lui ai donné mes commandements par mes serviteurs les prophètes ; mais ils n'ont pas voulu les entendre, et ont méprisé mes conseils.
Thus saith the Lord, I brought this people out of bondage, and I gave them my commandments by menservants the prophets; whom they would not hear, but despised my counsels.
La mère qui les a enfantés leur dit : Allez, mes enfants ; car je suis veuve et abandonnée.
The mother that bare them saith unto them, Go your way, ye children; for I am a widow and forsaken.
Je vous ai élevés avec joie ; mais je vous ai perdus avec douleur et tristesse : car vous avez péché devant le Seigneur votre Dieu, et vous avez fait ce qui est mal devant lui.
I brought you up with gladness; but with sorrow and heaviness have I lost you: for ye have sinned before the Lord your God, and done that thing that is evil before him.
Mais que ferai-je maintenant pour vous ? Je suis veuve et abandonnée : allez, ô mes enfants, et demandez miséricorde au Seigneur.
But what shall I now do unto you? I am a widow and forsaken: go your way, O my children, and ask mercy of the Lord.
Quant à moi, ô père, je t'appelle en témoin contre la mère de ces enfants, qui n'a pas voulu garder mon alliance,
As for me, O father, I call upon thee for a witness over the mother of these children, which would not keep my covenant,
Afin que tu les livres à la confusion, et leur mère au pillage, en sorte qu'il n'y ait plus de postérité d'eux.
That thou bring them to confusion, and their mother to a spoil, that there may be no offspring of them.
Qu'ils soient dispersés parmi les nations, que leurs noms soient effacés de la terre : car ils ont méprisé mon alliance.
Let them be scattered abroad among the heathen, let their names be put out of the earth: for they have despised my covenant.
Malheur à toi, Assur, toi qui caches les injustes en toi ! Ô peuple méchant, souviens-toi de ce que j'ai fait à Sodome et à Gomorrhe ;
Woe be unto thee, Assur, thou that hidest the unrighteous in thee! O thou wicked people, remember what I did unto Sodom and Gomorrha;
Dont la terre gît en mottes de poix et en monceaux de cendres : c'est ainsi que je ferai à ceux qui ne m'écoutent pas, dit le Seigneur Tout-Puissant.
Whose land lieth in clods of pitch and heaps of ashes: even so also will I do unto them that hear me not, saith the Almighty Lord.
Ainsi parle le Seigneur à Esdras : Dis à mon peuple que je lui donnerai le royaume de Jérusalem, que j'aurais donné à Israël.
Thus saith the Lord unto Esdras, Tell my people that I will give them the kingdom of Jerusalem, which I would have given unto Israel.
Je prendrai aussi leur gloire pour moi, et je donnerai à ceux-ci les tabernacles éternels que j'avais préparés pour eux.
Their glory also will I take unto me, and give these the everlasting tabernacles, which I had prepared for them.
Ils auront l'arbre de vie pour un onguent de douce odeur ; ils ne travailleront point, et ne se fatigueront point.
They shall have the tree of life for an ointment of sweet savour; they shall neither labour, nor be weary.
Allez, et vous recevrez : demandez pour vous peu de jours, afin qu'ils soient abrégés : le royaume est déjà préparé pour vous : veillez.
Go, and ye shall receive: pray for few days unto you, that they may be shortened: the kingdom is already prepared for you: watch.
Prends le ciel et la terre à témoin ; car j'ai brisé le mal en pièces, et j'ai créé le bien : car je suis vivant, dit le Seigneur.
Take heaven and earth to witness; for I have broken the evil in pieces, and created the good: for I live, saith the Lord.
Mère, embrasse tes enfants, et élève-les avec joie, affermis leurs pieds comme une colonne : car je t'ai choisie, dit le Seigneur.
Mother, embrace thy children, and bring them up with gladness, make their feet as fast as a pillar: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord.
Et je ressusciterai les morts de leurs lieux, et je les ferai sortir des sépulcres : car j'ai reconnu mon nom en Israël.
And those that be dead will I raise up again from their places, and bring them out of the graves: for I have known my name in Israel.
Ne crains point, mère des enfants : car je t'ai choisie, dit le Seigneur.
Fear not, thou mother of the children: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord.
Pour ton aide, j'enverrai mes serviteurs Ésaïe et Jérémie, selon le conseil desquels j'ai sanctifié et préparé pour toi douze arbres chargés de divers fruits,
For thy help will I send my servants Esau and Jeremy, after whose counsel I have sanctified and prepared for thee twelve trees laden with divers fruits,
Et autant de fontaines d'où coulent le lait et le miel, et sept montagnes puissantes, sur lesquelles croissent des roses et des lis, par lesquelles je remplirai tes enfants de joie.
And as many fountains flowing with milk and honey, and seven mighty mountains, whereupon there grow roses and lilies, whereby I will fill thy children with joy.
Fais droit à la veuve, juge pour l'orphelin, donne au pauvre, défends le pupille, vêtis celui qui est nu,
Do right to the widow, judge for the fatherless, give to the poor, defend the orphan, clothe the naked,
Guéris celui qui est brisé et faible, ne te moque pas du boiteux, défends l'estropié, et que l'aveugle parvienne à la vue de ma clarté.
Heal the broken and the weak, laugh not a lame man to scorn, defend the maimed, and let the blind man come into the sight of my clearness.
Garde les vieillards et les jeunes gens dans tes murs.
Keep the old and young within thy walls.
Partout où tu trouveras des morts, prends-les et ensevelis-les, et je te donnerai la première place dans ma résurrection.
Wheresoever thou findest the dead, take them and bury them, and I will give thee the first place in my resurrection.
Demeure tranquille, ô mon peuple, et prends ton repos, car ton repos viendra.
Abide still, O my people, and take thy rest, for thy quietness still come.
Nourris tes enfants, ô bonne nourrice ; affermis leurs pieds.
Nourish thy children, O thou good nurse; stablish their feet.
Quant aux serviteurs que je t'ai donnés, aucun d'eux ne périra ; car je les redemanderai du milieu de ton nombre.
As for the servants whom I have given thee, there shall not one of them perish; for I will require them from among thy number.
Ne te lasse point : car quand viendra le jour de la tribulation et de l'angoisse, les autres pleureront et seront tristes, mais toi tu seras dans la joie et dans l'abondance.
Be not weary: for when the day of trouble and heaviness cometh, others shall weep and be sorrowful, but thou shalt be merry and have abundance.
Les nations te porteront envie, mais elles ne pourront rien contre toi, dit le Seigneur.
The heathen shall envy thee, but they shall be able to do nothing against thee, saith the Lord.
Mes mains te couvriront, afin que tes enfants ne voient pas l'enfer.
My hands shall cover thee, so that thy children shall not see hell.
Sois dans la joie, ô mère, avec tes enfants ; car je te délivrerai, dit le Seigneur.
Be joyful, O thou mother, with thy children; for I will deliver thee, saith the Lord.
Souviens-toi de tes enfants qui dorment, car je les ferai sortir des extrémités de la terre, et je leur ferai miséricorde : car je suis miséricordieux, dit le Seigneur Tout-Puissant.
Remember thy children that sleep, for I shall bring them out of the sides of the earth, and shew mercy unto them: for I am merciful, saith the Lord Almighty.
Embrasse tes enfants jusqu'à ce que je vienne et que je leur fasse miséricorde : car mes sources débordent, et ma grâce ne fera pas défaut.
Embrace thy children until I come and shew mercy unto them: for my wells run over, and my grace shall not fail.
Moi, Esdras, je reçus du Seigneur une mission sur le mont Horeb, d'aller vers Israël ; mais quand je vins vers eux, ils me méprisèrent et rejetèrent le commandement du Seigneur.
I Esdras received a charge of the Lord upon the mount Oreb, that I should go unto Israel; but when I came unto them, they set me at nought, and despised the commandment of the Lord.
C'est pourquoi je vous dis, ô nations, qui entendez et comprenez : attendez votre Pasteur, il vous donnera le repos éternel ; car il est proche, celui qui doit venir à la fin du monde.
And therefore I say unto you, O ye heathen, that hear and understand, look for your Shepherd, he shall give you everlasting rest; for he is nigh at hand, that shall come in the end of the world.
Soyez prêts pour la récompense du royaume, car la lumière éternelle brillera sur vous pour toujours.
Be ready to the reward of the kingdom, for the everlasting light shall shine upon you for evermore.
Fuyez l'ombre de ce monde, recevez la joie de votre gloire : je rends ouvertement témoignage à mon Sauveur.
Flee the shadow of this world, receive the joyfulness of your glory: I testify my Saviour openly.
Recevez le don qui vous est fait, et soyez dans l'allégresse, rendant grâces à celui qui vous a conduits au royaume céleste.
O receive the gift that is given you, and be glad, giving thanks unto him that hath led you to the heavenly kingdom.
Levez-vous et tenez-vous debout, voyez le nombre de ceux qui sont marqués du sceau pour le festin du Seigneur ;
Arise up and stand, behold the number of those that be sealed in the feast of the Lord;
Qui sont sortis de l'ombre du monde, et ont reçu du Seigneur des vêtements glorieux.
Which are departed from the shadow of the world, and have received glorious garments of the Lord.
Reçois ton nombre, ô Sion, et enferme ceux des tiens qui sont vêtus de blanc, et qui ont accompli la loi du Seigneur.
Take thy number, O Sion, and shut up those of thine that are clothed in white, which have fulfilled the law of the Lord.
Le nombre de tes enfants, que tu désirais, est accompli : supplie la puissance du Seigneur, afin que ton peuple, qui a été appelé dès le commencement, soit sanctifié.
The number of thy children, whom thou longedst for, is fulfilled: beseech the power of the Lord, that thy people, which have been called from the beginning, may be hallowed.
Moi, Esdras, je vis sur le mont Sion une grande multitude que je ne pouvais nombrer, et ils louaient tous le Seigneur par des cantiques.
I Esdras saw upon the mount Sion a great people, whom I could not number, and they all praised the Lord with songs.
Et au milieu d'eux se trouvait un jeune homme d'une haute stature, plus grand que tous les autres, et il mettait des couronnes sur la tête de chacun d'eux, et il était plus élevé qu'eux ; ce dont je fus grandement émerveillé.
And in the midst of them there was a young man of a high stature, taller than all the rest, and upon every one of their heads he set crowns, and was more exalted; which I marvelled at greatly.
Alors j'interrogeai l'ange, et dis : Seigneur, qui sont ceux-ci ?
So I asked the angel, and said, Sir, what are these?
Il me répondit et dit : Ce sont ceux qui ont dépouillé le vêtement mortel et ont revêtu l'immortel, et qui ont confessé le nom de Dieu : maintenant ils sont couronnés et reçoivent des palmes.
He answered and said unto me, These be they that have put off the mortal clothing, and put on the immortal, and have confessed the name of God: now are they crowned, and receive palms.
Alors je dis à l'ange : Quel est ce jeune homme qui les couronne, et leur met des palmes dans les mains ?
Then said I unto the angel, What young person is it that crowneth them, and giveth them palms in their hands?
Il me répondit et dit : C'est le Fils de Dieu, qu'ils ont confessé dans le monde. Alors je commençai à louer grandement ceux qui s'étaient tenus si fermement pour le nom du Seigneur.
So he answered and said unto me, It is the Son of God, whom they have confessed in the world. Then began I greatly to commend them that stood so stiffly for the name of the Lord.
Alors l'ange me dit : Va, et raconte à mon peuple quelles choses et quels grands prodiges du Seigneur ton Dieu tu as vus.
Then the angel said unto me, Go thy way, and tell my people what manner of things, and how great wonders of the Lord thy God, thou hast seen.
La trentième année après la ruine de la ville, j'étais à Babylone, et j'étais troublé sur mon lit, et mes pensées montaient dans mon cœur :
In the thirtieth year after the ruin of the city I was in Babylon, and lay troubled upon my bed, and my thoughts came up over my heart:
Car je voyais la désolation de Sion, et l'opulence de ceux qui habitaient à Babylone.
For I saw the desolation of Sion, and the wealth of them that dwelt at Babylon.
Et mon esprit fut vivement ému, de sorte que je commençai à adresser des paroles pleines de crainte au Très-Haut, et je dis :
And my spirit was sore moved, so that I began to speak words full of fear to the most High, and said,
Ô Seigneur Souverain, tu as parlé au commencement, quand tu as planté la terre, et cela toi seul, et tu as commandé au peuple,
O Lord, who bearest rule, thou spakest at the beginning, when thou didst plant the earth, and that thyself alone, and commandedst the people,
Et tu as donné à Adam un corps sans âme, qui était l'ouvrage de tes mains, et tu as insufflé en lui un souffle de vie, et il fut rendu vivant devant toi.
And gavest a body unto Adam without soul, which was the workmanship of thine hands, and didst breathe into him the breath of life, and he was made living before thee.
Et tu l'as conduit dans le paradis, que ta main droite avait planté, avant même que la terre ne parût.
And thou leadest him into paradise, which thy right hand had planted, before ever the earth came forward.
Et tu lui as donné le commandement d'aimer ta voie : ce qu'il transgressa, et aussitôt tu as établi la mort pour lui et pour ses générations, desquelles sont issues des nations, des tribus, des peuples et des familles sans nombre.
And unto him thou gavest commandment to love thy way: which he transgressed, and immediately thou appointedst death in him and in his generations, of whom came nations, tribes, people, and kindreds, out of number.
Et chaque peuple marchait selon sa propre volonté, et faisait des choses étonnantes devant toi, et méprisait tes commandements.
And every people walked after their own will, and did wonderful things before thee, and despised thy commandments.
Et de nouveau, avec le temps, tu as amené le déluge sur ceux qui habitaient le monde, et tu les as détruits.
And again in process of time thou broughtest the flood upon those that dwelt in the world, and destroyedst them.
Et il arriva pour chacun d'eux que, comme la mort fut pour Adam, ainsi fut le déluge pour ceux-ci.
And it came to pass in every of them, that as death was to Adam, so was the flood to these.
Néanmoins tu en laissas un, savoir Noé avec sa maison, de qui sont issus tous les hommes justes.
Nevertheless one of them thou leftest, namely, Noah with his household, of whom came all righteous men.
Et il arriva que, lorsque ceux qui habitaient sur la terre commencèrent à se multiplier, et qu'ils eurent beaucoup d'enfants et devinrent un grand peuple, ils recommencèrent à être plus impies que les premiers.
And it happened, that when they that dwelt upon the earth began to multiply, and had gotten them many children, and were a great people, they began again to be more ungodly than the first.
Or, comme ils vivaient si méchamment devant toi, tu te choisis un homme d'entre eux, dont le nom était Abraham.
Now when they lived so wickedly before thee, thou didst choose thee a man from among them, whose name was Abraham.
Tu l'as aimé, et à lui seul tu as montré ta volonté :
Him thou lovedst, and unto him only thou shewedst thy will:
Et tu as fait avec lui une alliance éternelle, lui promettant que tu n'abandonnerais jamais sa postérité.
And madest an everlasting covenant with him, promising him that thou wouldest never forsake his seed.
Et tu lui as donné Isaac, et à Isaac aussi tu as donné Jacob et Ésaü. Quant à Jacob, tu l'as choisi pour toi, et tu as rejeté Ésaü : et ainsi Jacob devint une grande multitude.
And unto him thou gavest Isaac, and unto Isaac also thou gavest Jacob and Esau. As for Jacob, thou didst choose him to thee, and put by Esau: and so Jacob became a great multitude.
Et il arriva que, lorsque tu fis sortir sa postérité d'Égypte, tu les amenas au mont Sinaï.
And it came to pass, that when thou leadest his seed out of Egypt, thou broughtest them up to the mount Sinai.
Et abaissant les cieux, tu as affermi la terre, tu as ému le monde entier, et tu as fait trembler les abîmes, et tu as troublé les hommes de cet âge.
And bowing the heavens, thou didst set fast the earth, movedst the whole world, and madest the depths to tremble, and troubledst the men of that age.
Et ta gloire passa par quatre portes, de feu, de tremblement de terre, de vent et de froid ; afin que tu donnes la loi à la postérité de Jacob, et la vigilance à la génération d'Israël.
And thy glory went through four gates, of fire, and of earthquake, and of wind, and of cold; that thou mightest give the law unto the seed of Jacob, and diligence unto the generation of Israel.
Et pourtant tu ne leur as pas ôté leur cœur mauvais, afin que ta loi pût porter du fruit en eux.
And yet tookest thou not away from them a wicked heart, that thy law might bring forth fruit in them.
Car le premier Adam, portant un cœur mauvais, transgressa et fut vaincu ; et il en est de même de tous ceux qui sont nés de lui.
For the first Adam bearing a wicked heart transgressed, and was overcome; and so be all they that are born of him.
Ainsi l'infirmité devint permanente ; et la loi aussi dans le cœur du peuple avec la malignité de la racine ; de sorte que le bien s'en alla, et que le mal demeura.
Thus infirmity was made permanent; and the law (also) in the heart of the people with the malignity of the root; so that the good departed away, and the evil abode still.
Ainsi les temps passèrent, et les années prirent fin : alors tu t'es suscité un serviteur, appelé David :
So the times passed away, and the years were brought to an end: then didst thou raise thee up a servant, called David:
Auquel tu as commandé de bâtir une ville à ton nom, et d'y offrir de l'encens et des oblations.
Whom thou commandedst to build a city unto thy name, and to offer incense and oblations unto thee therein.
Quand cela fut fait depuis bien des années, alors ceux qui habitaient la ville t'abandonnèrent,
When this was done many years, then they that inhabited the city forsook thee,
Et en toutes choses ils firent comme Adam et toutes ses générations avaient fait : car eux aussi avaient un cœur mauvais :
And in all things did even as Adam and all his generations had done: for they also had a wicked heart:
Et ainsi tu as livré ta ville entre les mains de tes ennemis.
And so thou gavest thy city over into the hands of thine enemies.
Les actions de ceux qui habitent Babylone sont-elles donc meilleures, pour qu'ils aient ainsi la domination sur Sion ?
Are their deeds then any better that inhabit Babylon, that they should therefore have the dominion over Sion?
Car quand je vins là, et que j'eus vu des impiétés sans nombre, mon âme vit alors beaucoup de malfaiteurs en cette trentième année, de sorte que le cœur me manqua.
For when I came thither, and had seen impieties without number, then my soul saw many evildoers in this thirtieth year, so that my heart failed me.
Car j'ai vu comment tu les supportes dans leur péché, et comment tu as épargné les méchants : et tu as détruit ton peuple, et tu as préservé tes ennemis, et tu ne l'as point fait connaître.
For I have seen how thou sufferest them sinning, and hast spared wicked doers: and hast destroyed thy people, and hast preserved thine enemies, and hast not signified it.
Je ne me rappelle pas comment cette voie peut être délaissée : ceux de Babylone sont-ils donc meilleurs que ceux de Sion ?
I do not remember how this way may be left: Are they then of Babylon better than they of Sion?
Ou y a-t-il un autre peuple qui te connaisse, outre Israël ? ou quelle génération a ainsi cru à tes alliances, comme Jacob ?
Or is there any other people that knoweth thee beside Israel? or what generation hath so believed thy covenants as Jacob?
Et pourtant leur récompense ne paraît point, et leur travail n'a point de fruit : car j'ai parcouru çà et là les nations, et je vois qu'elles regorgent de richesses, et ne pensent point à tes commandements.
And yet their reward appeareth not, and their labour hath no fruit: for I have gone here and there through the heathen, and I see that they flow in wealth, and think not upon thy commandments.
Pèse donc maintenant notre iniquité dans la balance, et aussi celle de ceux qui habitent le monde ; et ainsi ton nom ne se trouvera nulle part ailleurs qu'en Israël.
Weigh thou therefore our wickedness now in the balance, and their’s also that dwell the world; and so shall thy name no where be found but in Israel.
Ou quand est-ce que ceux qui habitent sur la terre n'ont pas péché devant toi ? ou quel peuple a ainsi gardé tes commandements ?
Or when was it that they which dwell upon the earth have not sinned in thy sight? or what people have so kept thy commandments?
Tu trouveras qu'Israël nommément a gardé tes préceptes ; mais non les nations.
Thou shalt find that Israel by name hath kept thy precepts; but not the heathen.
Et l'ange qui m'avait été envoyé, dont le nom était Uriel, me donna une réponse,
And the angel that was sent unto me, whose name was Uriel, gave me an answer,
Et dit : Ton cœur s'est trop avancé dans ce monde, et penses-tu comprendre la voie du Très-Haut ?
And said, Thy heart hath gone to far in this world, and thinkest thou to comprehend the way of the most High?
Alors je dis : Oui, mon seigneur. Et il me répondit et dit : Je suis envoyé pour te montrer trois voies, et pour proposer trois similitudes devant toi :
Then said I, Yea, my lord. And he answered me, and said, I am sent to shew thee three ways, and to set forth three similitudes before thee:
Desquelles si tu peux m'en expliquer une seule, je te montrerai aussi la voie que tu désires voir, et je te ferai voir d'où vient le cœur mauvais.
Whereof if thou canst declare me one, I will shew thee also the way that thou desirest to see, and I shall shew thee from whence the wicked heart cometh.
Et je dis : Parle, mon seigneur. Alors il me dit : Va, pèse-moi le poids du feu, ou mesure-moi le souffle du vent, ou rappelle-moi le jour qui est passé.
And I said, Tell on, my lord. Then said he unto me, Go thy way, weigh me the weight of the fire, or measure me the blast of the wind, or call me again the day that is past.
Alors je répondis et dis : Quel homme est capable de faire cela, pour que tu me demandes de telles choses ?
Then answered I and said, What man is able to do that, that thou shouldest ask such things of me?
Et il me dit : Si je te demandais combien il y a de demeures au milieu de la mer, ou combien de sources au commencement de l'abîme, ou combien de sources au-dessus du firmament, ou quelles sont les issues du paradis :
And he said unto me, If I should ask thee how great dwellings are in the midst of the sea, or how many springs are in the beginning of the deep, or how many springs are above the firmament, or which are the outgoings of paradise:
Peut-être me dirais-tu : Je ne suis jamais descendu dans l'abîme, ni encore dans l'enfer, et je ne suis jamais monté au ciel.
Peradventure thou wouldest say unto me, I never went down into the deep, nor as yet into hell, neither did I ever climb up into heaven.
Néanmoins, je ne t'ai interrogé maintenant que sur le feu et le vent, et sur le jour par lequel tu as passé, et sur des choses dont tu ne peux être séparé, et pourtant tu ne peux m'en donner aucune réponse.
Nevertheless now have I asked thee but only of the fire and wind, and of the day wherethrough thou hast passed, and of things from which thou canst not be separated, and yet canst thou give me no answer of them.
Il me dit encore : Tes propres choses, et celles qui ont grandi avec toi, tu ne peux les connaître ;
He said moreover unto me, Thine own things, and such as are grown up with thee, canst thou not know;
Comment ton vase pourrait-il donc comprendre la voie du Très-Haut, et, le monde étant déjà corrompu au-dehors, comprendre la corruption qui est évidente à mes yeux ?
How should thy vessel then be able to comprehend the way of the Highest, and, the world being now outwardly corrupted to understand the corruption that is evident in my sight?
Alors je lui dis : Il vaudrait mieux que nous ne fussions point du tout, que de vivre encore dans la méchanceté, et de souffrir sans savoir pourquoi.
Then said I unto him, It were better that we were not at all, than that we should live still in wickedness, and to suffer, and not to know wherefore.
Il me répondit et dit : Je suis allé dans une forêt, dans une plaine, et les arbres tinrent conseil,
He answered me, and said, I went into a forest into a plain, and the trees took counsel,
Et dirent : Venez, allons faire la guerre à la mer, afin qu'elle se retire devant nous, et que nous puissions nous faire d'autres forêts.
And said, Come, let us go and make war against the sea that it may depart away before us, and that we may make us more woods.
Les flots de la mer tinrent aussi conseil de la même manière, et dirent : Venez, montons et subjugons les forêts de la plaine, afin que là aussi nous nous fassions un autre pays.
The floods of the sea also in like manner took counsel, and said, Come, let us go up and subdue the woods of the plain, that there also we may make us another country.
La pensée de la forêt fut vaine, car le feu vint et la consuma.
The thought of the wood was in vain, for the fire came and consumed it.
La pensée des flots de la mer fut aussi réduite à néant, car le sable se dressa et les arrêta.
The thought of the floods of the sea came likewise to nought, for the sand stood up and stopped them.
Si tu étais maintenant juge entre ces deux-là, lequel commencerais-tu à justifier ? ou lequel condamnerais-tu ?
If thou wert judge now betwixt these two, whom wouldest thou begin to justify? or whom wouldest thou condemn?
Je répondis et dis : En vérité, c'est une pensée folle qu'ils ont tous deux conçue, car la terre est donnée à la forêt, et la mer aussi a son lieu pour porter ses flots.
I answered and said, Verily it is a foolish thought that they both have devised, for the ground is given unto the wood, and the sea also hath his place to bear his floods.
Alors il me répondit et dit : Tu as porté un jugement juste, mais pourquoi ne te juges-tu pas toi-même aussi ?
Then answered he me, and said, Thou hast given a right judgment, but why judgest thou not thyself also?
Car de même que la terre est donnée à la forêt, et la mer à ses flots : ainsi ceux qui habitent sur la terre ne peuvent comprendre que ce qui est sur la terre ; et celui qui habite au-dessus des cieux ne peut comprendre que les choses qui sont au-dessus de la hauteur des cieux.
For like as the ground is given unto the wood, and the sea to his floods: even so they that dwell upon the earth may understand nothing but that which is upon the earth: and he that dwelleth above the heavens may only understand the things that are above the height of the heavens.
Alors je répondis et dis : Je te supplie, ô Seigneur, de me donner l'intelligence :
Then answered I and said, I beseech thee, O Lord, let me have understanding:
Car mon intention n'était pas d'être curieux des choses élevées, mais de celles qui passent quotidiennement devant nous, savoir : pourquoi Israël est livré à l'opprobre des nations, et pour quelle cause le peuple que tu as aimé est livré à des nations impies, et pourquoi la loi de nos pères est réduite à néant, et les alliances écrites restent sans effet,
For it was not my mind to be curious of the high things, but of such as pass by us daily, namely, wherefore Israel is given up as a reproach to the heathen, and for what cause the people whom thou hast loved is given over unto ungodly nations, and why the law of our forefathers is brought to nought, and the written covenants come to none effect,
Et nous passons hors du monde comme des sauterelles, et notre vie est un étonnement et une crainte, et nous ne sommes pas dignes d'obtenir miséricorde.
And we pass away out of the world as grasshoppers, and our life is astonishment and fear, and we are not worthy to obtain mercy.
Que fera-t-il donc pour son nom par lequel nous sommes appelés ? c'est sur ces choses que j'ai interrogé.
What will he then do unto his name whereby we are called? of these things have I asked.
Alors il me répondit et dit : Plus tu chercheras, plus tu t'émerveilleras ; car le monde se hâte de passer,
Then answered he me, and said, The more thou searchest, the more thou shalt marvel; for the world hasteth fast to pass away,
Et il ne peut comprendre les choses qui sont promises aux justes pour le temps à venir : car ce monde est plein d'injustice et d'infirmités.
And cannot comprehend the things that are promised to the righteous in time to come: for this world is full of unrighteousness and infirmities.
Mais quant aux choses sur lesquelles tu m'interroges, je te le dirai ; car le mal est semé, mais sa destruction n'est pas encore venue.
But as concerning the things whereof thou askest me, I will tell thee; for the evil is sown, but the destruction thereof is not yet come.
Si donc ce qui est semé n'est pas renversé, et si le lieu où le mal est semé ne passe pas, alors ce qui est semé de bien ne peut pas venir.
If therefore that which is sown be not turned upside down, and if the place where the evil is sown pass not away, then cannot it come that is sown with good.
Car le grain de semence mauvaise a été semé dans le cœur d'Adam dès le commencement, et combien d'impiété a-t-il produite jusqu'à ce jour ? et combien en produira-t-il encore jusqu'à ce que vienne le temps du battage ?
For the grain of evil seed hath been sown in the heart of Adam from the beginning, and how much ungodliness hath it brought up unto this time? and how much shall it yet bring forth until the time of threshing come?
Considère maintenant par toi-même quel grand fruit de méchanceté le grain de semence mauvaise a produit.
Ponder now by thyself, how great fruit of wickedness the grain of evil seed hath brought forth.
Et quand les épis seront coupés, lesquels sont sans nombre, quelle grande aire rempliront-ils ?
And when the ears shall be cut down, which are without number, how great a floor shall they fill?
Alors je répondis et dis : Comment et quand ces choses arriveront-elles ? pourquoi nos années sont-elles peu nombreuses et mauvaises ?
Then I answered and said, How, and when shall these things come to pass? wherefore are our years few and evil?
Et il me répondit, disant : Ne te hâte pas plus que le Très-Haut : car ta hâte est vaine pour être au-dessus de lui, car tu as beaucoup excédé.
And he answered me, saying, Do not thou hasten above the most Highest: for thy haste is in vain to be above him, for thou hast much exceeded.
Les âmes des justes n'ont-elles pas aussi interrogé sur ces choses dans leurs demeures, disant : Jusques à quand espérerai-je de la sorte ? quand viendra le fruit de l'aire de notre récompense ?
Did not the souls also of the righteous ask question of these things in their chambers, saying, How long shall I hope on this fashion? when cometh the fruit of the floor of our reward?
Et à ces choses, l'archange Uriel leur donna réponse, et dit : Quand le nombre des semences sera accompli en vous : car il a pesé le monde dans la balance.
And unto these things Uriel the archangel gave them answer, and said, Even when the number of seeds is filled in you: for he hath weighed the world in the balance.
Il a mesuré les temps avec mesure ; et il a compté les temps par nombre ; et il ne les remue ni ne les agite, jusqu'à ce que ladite mesure soit accomplie.
By measure hath he measured the times; and by number hath he numbered the times; and he doth not move nor stir them, until the said measure be fulfilled.
Alors je répondis et dis : Ô Seigneur Souverain, nous sommes tous remplis d'impiété.
Then answered I and said, O Lord that bearest rule, even we all are full of impiety.
Et c'est peut-être à cause de nous que les aires des justes ne sont pas remplies, à cause des péchés de ceux qui habitent sur la terre.
And for our sakes peradventure it is that the floors of the righteous are not filled, because of the sins of them that dwell upon the earth.
Alors il me répondit et dit : Va vers une femme enceinte, et demande-lui si, lorsqu'elle a accompli ses neuf mois, son sein peut retenir l'enfant plus longtemps en elle.
So he answered me, and said, Go thy way to a woman with child, and ask of her when she hath fulfilled her nine months, if her womb may keep the birth any longer within her.
Alors je dis : Non, Seigneur, elle ne le peut pas. Et il me dit : Dans le sépulcre, les demeures des âmes sont comme le sein d'une femme :
Then said I, No, Lord, that can she not. And he said unto me, In the grave the chambers of souls are like the womb of a woman:
Car de même qu'une femme qui est en travail se hâte d'échapper à la nécessité du travail : ainsi ces lieux se hâtent de délivrer les choses qui leur sont confiées.
For like as a woman that travaileth maketh haste to escape the necessity of the travail: even so do these places haste to deliver those things that are committed unto them.
Dès le commencement, vois, ce que tu désires voir te sera montré.
From the beginning, look, what thou desirest to see, it shall be shewed thee.
Alors je répondis et dis : Si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et si cela est possible, et si j'en suis digne,
Then answered I and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, and if it be possible, and if I be meet therefore,
Montre-moi donc s'il y a plus à venir qu'il n'est passé, ou s'il est plus passé qu'il n'y a à venir.
Shew me then whether there be more to come than is past, or more past than is to come.
Ce qui est passé, je le sais, mais ce qui est à venir, je ne le sais pas.
What is past I know, but what is for to come I know not.
Et il me dit : Tiens-toi debout sur le côté droit, et je t'expliquerai la similitude.
And he said unto me, Stand up upon the right side, and I shall expound the similitude unto thee.
Je me tins donc debout, et je vis, et voici, un fourneau brûlant passa devant moi : et il arriva que, lorsque la flamme fut passée, je regardai, et voici, la fumée restait encore.
So I stood, and saw, and, behold, an hot burning oven passed by before me: and it happened that when the flame was gone by I looked, and, behold, the smoke remained still.
Après cela, il passa devant moi une nuée pluvieuse, qui envoya une grande pluie avec une tempête ; et quand la pluie d'orage fut passée, les gouttes restèrent encore.
After this there passed by before me a watery cloud, and sent down much rain with a storm; and when the stormy rain was past, the drops remained still.
Alors il me dit : Considère en toi-même : comme la pluie est plus que les gouttes, et comme le feu est plus grand que la fumée ; mais les gouttes et la fumée restent après : ainsi la quantité qui est passée a beaucoup plus excédé.
Then said he unto me, Consider with thyself; as the rain is more than the drops, and as the fire is greater than the smoke; but the drops and the smoke remain behind: so the quantity which is past did more exceed.
Alors je priai et dis : Penses-tu que je vivrai jusqu'à ce temps-là ? ou qu'arrivera-t-il en ces jours-là ?
Then I prayed, and said, May I live, thinkest thou, until that time? or what shall happen in those days?
Il me répondit et dit : Quant aux signes sur lesquels tu m'interroges, je puis t'en dire une partie ; mais quant à ta vie, je ne suis pas envoyé pour te la montrer ; car je ne la connais pas.
He answered me, and said, As for the tokens whereof thou askest me, I may tell thee of them in part: but as touching thy life, I am not sent to shew thee; for I do not know it.
Néanmoins, quant aux signes, voici, les jours viendront où ceux qui habitent sur la terre seront saisis en grand nombre, et la voie de la vérité sera cachée, et la terre sera stérile de foi.
Nevertheless as coming the tokens, behold, the days shall come, that they which dwell upon earth shall be taken in a great number, and the way of truth shall be hidden, and the land shall be barren of faith.
Mais l'iniquité sera accrue au-dessus de ce que tu vois maintenant, ou de ce que tu as entendu dire il y a longtemps.
But iniquity shall be increased above that which now thou seest, or that thou hast heard long ago.
Et la terre, que tu vois maintenant avoir racine, tu la verras soudainement dévastée.
And the land, that thou seest now to have root, shalt thou see wasted suddenly.
Mais si le Très-Haut t'accorde de vivre, tu verras après la troisième trompette que le soleil brillera soudainement de nouveau pendant la nuit, et la lune trois fois par jour :
But if the most High grant thee to live, thou shalt see after the third trumpet that the sun shall suddenly shine again in the night, and the moon thrice in the day:
Et le sang coulera du bois, et la pierre fera entendre sa voix, et les peuples seront troublés :
And blood shall drop out of wood, and the stone shall give his voice, and the people shall be troubled:
Et celui-là même régnera, que n'attendent pas ceux qui habitent sur la terre, et les oiseaux s'envoleront tous ensemble :
And even he shall rule, whom they look not for that dwell upon the earth, and the fowls shall take their flight away together:
Et la mer de Sodome rejettera des poissons, et fera un bruit dans la nuit, que beaucoup n'ont pas connu : mais ils en entendront tous la voix.
And the Sodomitish sea shall cast out fish, and make a noise in the night, which many have not known: but they shall all hear the voice thereof.
Il aura aussi une confusion en beaucoup de lieux, et le feu sera souvent renvoyé, et les bêtes sauvages changeront de place, et les femmes impures enfanteront des monstres :
There shall be a confusion also in many places, and the fire shall be oft sent out again, and the wild beasts shall change their places, and menstruous women shall bring forth monsters:
Et des eaux salées se trouveront dans les douces, et tous les amis se détruiront les uns les autres ; alors la sagesse se cachera, et l'intelligence se retirera dans sa chambre secrète,
And salt waters shall be found in the sweet, and all friends shall destroy one another; then shall wit hide itself, and understanding withdraw itself into his secret chamber,
Et elle sera cherchée par beaucoup, et pourtant ne sera pas trouvée : alors l'injustice et l'incontinence seront multipliées sur la terre.
And shall be sought of many, and yet not be found: then shall unrighteousness and incontinency be multiplied upon earth.
Un pays aussi interrogera l'autre, et dira : La justice qui rend l'homme juste a-t-elle passé par toi ? Et il dira : Non.
One land also shall ask another, and say, Is righteousness that maketh a man righteous gone through thee? And it shall say, No.
En ce même temps, les hommes espéreront, mais n'obtiendront rien : ils travailleront, mais leurs voies ne prospéreront pas.
At the same time shall men hope, but nothing obtain: they shall labour, but their ways shall not prosper.
J'ai la permission de te montrer de tels signes ; et si tu veux prier encore, et pleurer comme maintenant, et jeûner sept jours, tu entendras des choses encore plus grandes.
To shew thee such tokens I have leave; and if thou wilt pray again, and weep as now, and fast even days, thou shalt hear yet greater things.
Alors je m'éveillai, et une frayeur extrême parcourut tout mon corps, et mon esprit fut troublé, au point de défaillir.
Then I awaked, and an extreme fearfulness went through all my body, and my mind was troubled, so that it fainted.
Mais l'ange qui était venu me parler me retint, me consola, et me mit debout sur mes pieds.
So the angel that was come to talk with me held me, comforted me, and set me up upon my feet.
Et la seconde nuit, il arriva que Salathiel, le chef du peuple, vint à moi, disant : Où as-tu été ? et pourquoi ton visage est-il si abattu ?
And in the second night it came to pass, that Salathiel the captain of the people came unto me, saying, Where hast thou been? and why is thy countenance so heavy?
Ne sais-tu pas qu'Israël t'est confié dans la terre de sa captivité ?
Knowest thou not that Israel is committed unto thee in the land of their captivity?
Lève-toi donc, et mange du pain, et ne nous abandonne pas, comme le berger qui laisse son troupeau entre les mains de loups cruels.
Up then, and eat bread, and forsake us not, as the shepherd that leaveth his flock in the hands of cruel wolves.
Alors je lui dis : Retire-toi de moi, et ne t'approche pas de moi. Et il entendit ce que je disais, et s'éloigna de moi.
Then said I unto him, Go thy ways from me, and come not nigh me. And he heard what I said, and went from me.
Et ainsi je jeûnai sept jours, menant deuil et pleurant, comme l'ange Uriel me l'avait commandé.
And so I fasted seven days, mourning and weeping, like as Uriel the angel commanded me.
Et après sept jours, il arriva que les pensées de mon cœur me furent de nouveau très pénibles,
And after seven days so it was, that the thoughts of my heart were very grievous unto me again,
Et mon âme recouvra l'esprit d'intelligence, et je recommençai à parler avec le Très-Haut,
And my soul recovered the spirit of understanding, and I began to talk with the most High again,
Et je dis : Ô Seigneur Souverain, de tout le bois de la terre, et de tous ses arbres, tu ne t'es choisi qu'une seule vigne :
And said, O Lord that bearest rule, of every wood of the earth, and of all the trees thereof, thou hast chosen thee one only vine:
Et de toutes les terres du monde entier, tu t'es choisi une seule fosse ; et de toutes ses fleurs, un seul lis :
And of all lands of the whole world thou hast chosen thee one pit: and of all the flowers thereof one lily:
Et de tous les abîmes de la mer, tu t'es rempli un seul fleuve ; et de toutes les villes bâties, tu t'es sanctifié Sion :
And of all the depths of the sea thou hast filled thee one river: and of all builded cities thou hast hallowed Sion unto thyself:
Et de tous les oiseaux qui sont créés, tu t'es nommé une seule colombe ; et de tout le bétail qui est fait, tu t'es pourvu d'une seule brebis :
And of all the fowls that are created thou hast named thee one dove: and of all the cattle that are made thou hast provided thee one sheep:
Et parmi toutes les multitudes de peuples, tu t'es acquis un seul peuple ; et à ce peuple, que tu as aimé, tu as donné une loi qui est approuvée de tous.
And among all the multitudes of people thou hast gotten thee one people: and unto this people, whom thou lovedst, thou gavest a law that is approved of all.
Et maintenant, ô Seigneur, pourquoi as-tu livré ce seul peuple à plusieurs ? et sur cette seule racine en as-tu préparé d'autres, et pourquoi as-tu dispersé ton peuple unique parmi plusieurs ?
And now, O Lord, why hast thou given this one people over unto many? and upon the one root hast thou prepared others, and why hast thou scattered thy only one people among many?
Et ceux qui contredisaient tes promesses, et ne croyaient pas à tes alliances, les ont foulés aux pieds.
And they which did gainsay thy promises, and believed not thy covenants, have trodden them down.
Si tu haïssais tant ton peuple, tu devrais pourtant le punir de tes propres mains.
If thou didst so much hate thy people, yet shouldest thou punish them with thine own hands.
Or, quand j'eus prononcé ces paroles, l'ange qui était venu vers moi la nuit précédente me fut envoyé,
Now when I had spoken these words, the angel that came to me the night afore was sent unto me,
Et me dit : Écoute-moi, et je t'instruirai ; prête l'oreille à ce que je dis, et je t'en dirai davantage.
And said unto me, Hear me, and I will instruct thee; hearken to the thing that I say, and I shall tell thee more.
Et je dis : Parle, mon Seigneur. Alors il me dit : Tu es fort troublé en ton esprit à cause d'Israël : aimes-tu ce peuple plus que celui qui l'a fait ?
And I said, Speak on, my Lord. Then said he unto me, Thou art sore troubled in mind for Israel’s sake: lovest thou that people better than he that made them?
Et je dis : Non, Seigneur ; mais c'est par une grande douleur que j'ai parlé : car mes reins me font souffrir à chaque heure, tandis que je m'efforce de comprendre la voie du Très-Haut, et de rechercher une partie de son jugement.
And I said, No, Lord: but of very grief have I spoken: for my reins pain me every hour, while I labour to comprehend the way of the most High, and to seek out part of his judgment.
Et il me dit : Tu ne le peux pas. Et je dis : Pourquoi, Seigneur ? à quoi suis-je donc né ? ou pourquoi le sein de ma mère n'a-t-il pas été mon sépulcre, afin que je ne visse pas le travail de Jacob, et la fatigue pénible de la race d'Israël ?
And he said unto me, Thou canst not. And I said, Wherefore, Lord? whereunto was I born then? or why was not my mother’s womb then my grave, that I might not have seen the travail of Jacob, and the wearisome toil of the stock of Israel?
Et il me dit : Compte-moi les choses qui ne sont pas encore venues, rassemble-moi les gouttes qui sont dispersées, rends-moi vertes les fleurs qui sont flétries,
And he said unto me, Number me the things that are not yet come, gather me together the dross that are scattered abroad, make me the flowers green again that are withered,
Ouvre-moi les lieux qui sont fermés, et fais-moi sortir les vents qui y sont enfermés, montre-moi l'image d'une voix : et alors je te déclarerai la chose que tu t'efforces de connaître.
Open me the places that are closed, and bring me forth the winds that in them are shut up, shew me the image of a voice: and then I will declare to thee the thing that thou labourest to know.
Et je dis : Ô Seigneur Souverain, qui peut connaître ces choses, sinon celui qui n'a pas sa demeure avec les hommes ?
And I said, O Lord that bearest rule, who may know these things, but he that hath not his dwelling with men?
Quant à moi, je suis sans sagesse : comment puis-je donc parler de ces choses sur lesquelles tu m'interroges ?
As for me, I am unwise: how may I then speak of these things whereof thou askest me?
Alors il me dit : De même que tu ne peux faire aucune de ces choses dont j'ai parlé, de même tu ne peux découvrir mon jugement, ni à la fin l'amour que j'ai promis à mon peuple.
Then said he unto me, Like as thou canst do none of these things that I have spoken of, even so canst thou not find out my judgment, or in the end the love that I have promised unto my people.
Et je dis : Voici, ô Seigneur, tu es pourtant proche de ceux qui sont réservés pour la fin : et que feront ceux qui ont été avant moi, ou nous qui sommes maintenant, ou ceux qui viendront après nous ?
And I said, Behold, O Lord, yet art thou nigh unto them that be reserved till the end: and what shall they do that have been before me, or we that be now, or they that shall come after us?
Et il me dit : Je comparerai mon jugement à un anneau : de même qu'il n'y a pas de retard pour les derniers, de même il n'y a pas de hâte pour les premiers.
And he said unto me, I will liken my judgment unto a ring: like as there is no slackness of the last, even so there is no swiftness of the first.
Alors je répondis et dis : Ne pourrais-tu pas faire à la fois ceux qui ont été faits, et ceux qui sont maintenant, et ceux qui doivent venir ; afin que tu puisses montrer ton jugement plus tôt ?
So I answered and said, Couldest thou not make those that have been made, and be now, and that are for to come, at once; that thou mightest shew thy judgment the sooner?
Alors il me répondit et dit : La créature ne peut se hâter plus que le créateur ; et le monde ne peut contenir à la fois ceux qui y seront créés.
Then answered he me, and said, The creature may not haste above the maker; neither may the world hold them at once that shall be created therein.
Et je dis : Comme tu l'as dit à ton serviteur, que toi, qui donnes la vie à tous, tu as donné la vie à la fois à la créature que tu as créée, et que la créature l'a portée : de même elle pourrait maintenant aussi les porter tous ensemble.
And I said, As thou hast said unto thy servant, that thou, which givest life to all, hast given life at once to the creature that thou hast created, and the creature bare it: even so it might now also bear them that now be present at once.
Et il me dit : Interroge le sein d'une femme, et dis-lui : Si tu enfantes des enfants, pourquoi ne le fais-tu pas ensemble, mais l'un après l'autre ? prie-la donc d'enfanter dix enfants à la fois.
And he said unto me, Ask the womb of a woman, and say unto her, If thou bringest forth children, why dost thou it not together, but one after another? pray her therefore to bring forth ten children at once.
Et je dis : Elle ne le peut pas ; mais elle doit le faire par intervalle de temps.
And I said, She cannot: but must do it by distance of time.
Alors il me dit : De même, j'ai donné le sein de la terre à ceux qui y sont semés en leurs temps.
Then said he unto me, Even so have I given the womb of the earth to those that be sown in it in their times.
Car, de même qu'un petit enfant ne peut produire les choses qui appartiennent aux vieillards, de même j'ai disposé le monde que j'ai créé.
For like as a young child may not bring forth the things that belong to the aged, even so have I disposed the world which I created.
Et j'interrogeai et dis : Puisque tu m'as maintenant ouvert la voie, je continuerai à parler devant toi : car notre mère, dont tu m'as dit qu'elle est jeune, approche maintenant de la vieillesse.
And I asked, and said, Seeing thou hast now given me the way, I will proceed to speak before thee: for our mother, of whom thou hast told me that she is young, draweth now nigh unto age.
Il me répondit et dit : Interroge une femme qui enfante, et elle te le dira.
He answered me, and said, Ask a woman that beareth children, and she shall tell thee.
Dis-lui : Pourquoi ceux que tu as enfantés maintenant ne sont-ils pas semblables à ceux qui étaient auparavant, mais sont-ils d'une stature moindre ?
Say unto her, Wherefore are unto they whom thou hast now brought forth like those that were before, but less of stature?
Et elle te répondra : Ceux qui sont nés dans la force de la jeunesse sont d'une sorte, et ceux qui sont nés au temps de la vieillesse, quand le sein défaille, sont d'une autre.
And she shall answer thee, They that be born in the the strength of youth are of one fashion, and they that are born in the time of age, when the womb faileth, are otherwise.
Considère donc aussi que vous êtes d'une stature moindre que ceux qui étaient avant vous.
Consider thou therefore also, how that ye are less of stature than those that were before you.
Et ainsi ceux qui viennent après vous sont moindres que vous, comme des créatures qui commencent maintenant à vieillir, et qui ont passé la force de la jeunesse.
And so are they that come after you less than ye, as the creatures which now begin to be old, and have passed over the strength of youth.
Alors je dis : Seigneur, je te supplie, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, montre à ton serviteur par qui tu visites ta créature.
Then said I, Lord, I beseech thee, if I have found favour in thy sight, shew thy servant by whom thou visitest thy creature.
Et il me dit : Au commencement, quand la terre fut faite, avant que les limites du monde ne fussent posées, ou que les vents ne soufflassent,
And he said unto me, In the beginning, when the earth was made, before the borders of the world stood, or ever the winds blew,
Avant qu'il ne tonnât et n'éclairât, ou que les fondements du paradis ne fussent posés,
Before it thundered and lightened, or ever the foundations of paradise were laid,
Avant que les belles fleurs ne fussent vues, ou que les puissances mobiles ne fussent établies, avant que la multitude innombrable des anges ne fût rassemblée,
Before the fair flowers were seen, or ever the moveable powers were established, before the innumerable multitude of angels were gathered together,
Ou que les hauteurs de l'air ne fussent élevées, avant que les mesures du firmament ne fussent nommées, ou que les foyers de Sion ne fussent chauds,
Or ever the heights of the air were lifted up, before the measures of the firmament were named, or ever the chimneys in Sion were hot,
Et avant que les années présentes ne fussent recherchées, et avant que les inventions de ceux qui pèchent maintenant ne fussent détournées, avant que ne fussent marqués du sceau ceux qui ont amassé la foi pour trésor :
And ere the present years were sought out, and or ever the inventions of them that now sin were turned, before they were sealed that have gathered faith for a treasure:
Alors je considérai ces choses, et elles furent toutes faites par moi seul, et par nul autre : par moi aussi elles seront finies, et par nul autre.
Then did I consider these things, and they all were made through me alone, and through none other: by me also they shall be ended, and by none other.
Alors je répondis et dis : Quelle sera la séparation des temps ? ou quand sera la fin du premier, et le commencement de celui qui suit ?
Then answered I and said, What shall be the parting asunder of the times? or when shall be the end of the first, and the beginning of it that followeth?
Et il me dit : Depuis Abraham jusqu'à Isaac, quand Jacob et Ésaü naquirent de lui, la main de Jacob tenait d'abord le talon d'Ésaü.
And he said unto me, From Abraham unto Isaac, when Jacob and Esau were born of him, Jacob’s hand held first the heel of Esau.
Car Ésaü est la fin du monde, et Jacob est le commencement de celui qui suit.
For Esau is the end of the world, and Jacob is the beginning of it that followeth.
La main de l'homme est entre le talon et la main : ne pose pas d'autre question, Esdras.
The hand of man is betwixt the heel and the hand: other question, Esdras, ask thou not.
Je répondis alors et dis : Ô Seigneur Souverain, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux,
I answered then and said, O Lord that bearest rule, if I have found favour in thy sight,
Je te supplie de montrer à ton serviteur la fin de tes signes, dont tu m'as montré une partie la nuit dernière.
I beseech thee, shew thy servant the end of thy tokens, whereof thou shewedst me part the last night.
Il me répondit donc et dit : Tiens-toi debout sur tes pieds, et entends une voix au son puissant.
So he answered and said unto me, Stand up upon thy feet, and hear a mighty sounding voice.
Et ce sera comme un grand ébranlement ; mais le lieu où tu te tiens ne sera pas ému.
And it shall be as it were a great motion; but the place where thou standest shall not be moved.
C'est pourquoi, quand elle parlera, ne crains point : car la parole concerne la fin, et le fondement de la terre est compris.
And therefore when it speaketh be not afraid: for the word is of the end, and the foundation of the earth is understood.
Et pourquoi ? parce que le discours sur ces choses tremble et est ému : car il sait que la fin de ces choses doit être changée.
And why? because the speech of these things trembleth and is moved: for it knoweth that the end of these things must be changed.
Et il arriva que, quand je l'eus entendue, je me tins debout sur mes pieds, et j'écoutai ; et voici, il y avait une voix qui parlait, et son bruit était comme le bruit de grandes eaux.
And it happened, that when I had heard it I stood up upon my feet, and hearkened, and, behold, there was a voice that spake, and the sound of it was like the sound of many waters.
Et elle dit : Voici, les jours viennent où je commencerai à m'approcher, et à visiter ceux qui habitent sur la terre,
And it said, Behold, the days come, that I will begin to draw nigh, and to visit them that dwell upon the earth,
Et je commencerai à faire enquête sur eux, pour savoir quels sont ceux qui ont nui injustement par leur iniquité, et quand l'affliction de Sion sera accomplie ;
And will begin to make inquisition of them, what they be that have hurt unjustly with their unrighteousness, and when the affliction of Sion shall be fulfilled;
Et quand le monde, qui commencera à s'évanouir, sera fini, alors je montrerai ces signes : les livres seront ouverts devant le firmament, et ils verront tous ensemble :
And when the world, that shall begin to vanish away, shall be finished, then will I shew these tokens: the books shall be opened before the firmament, and they shall see all together:
Et les enfants d'un an parleront de leur voix, les femmes enceintes enfanteront des enfants prématurés de trois ou quatre mois, et ils vivront et seront élevés.
And the children of a year old shall speak with their voices, the women with child shall bring forth untimely children of three or four months old, and they shall live, and be raised up.
Et soudainement les lieux semés paraîtront non semés, les greniers pleins seront soudainement trouvés vides :
And suddenly shall the sown places appear unsown, the full storehouses shall suddenly be found empty:
Et la trompette rendra un son que, dès que tout homme l'entendra, ils seront soudainement effrayés.
And the trumpet shall give a sound, which when every man heareth, they shall be suddenly afraid.
En ce temps-là, les amis combattront les uns contre les autres comme des ennemis, et la terre sera dans la crainte avec ceux qui l'habitent, les sources des fontaines s'arrêteront, et pendant trois heures elles ne couleront pas.
At that time shall friends fight one against another like enemies, and the earth shall stand in fear with those that dwell therein, the springs of the fountains shall stand still, and in three hours they shall not run.
Quiconque restera de tous ceux dont je t'ai parlé échappera, et verra mon salut, et la fin de votre monde.
Whosoever remaineth from all these that I have told thee shall escape, and see my salvation, and the end of your world.
Et les hommes qui auront été reçus le verront, eux qui n'auront pas goûté la mort depuis leur naissance : et le cœur des habitants sera changé, et tourné vers un autre sens.
And the men that are received shall see it, who have not tasted death from their birth: and the heart of the inhabitants shall be changed, and turned into another meaning.
Car le mal sera éteint, et la tromperie sera étouffée.
For evil shall be put out, and deceit shall be quenched.
Quant à la foi, elle fleurira, la corruption sera vaincue, et la vérité, qui a été si longtemps sans fruit, sera déclarée.
As for faith, it shall flourish, corruption shall be overcome, and the truth, which hath been so long without fruit, shall be declared.
Et pendant qu'il me parlait, voici, je regardais peu à peu celui devant qui je me tenais.
And when he talked with me, behold, I looked by little and little upon him before whom I stood.
Et il me dit ces paroles : Je suis venu pour te montrer le temps de la nuit à venir.
And these words said he unto me; I am come to shew thee the time of the night to come.
Si tu veux prier encore davantage, et jeûner de nouveau sept jours, je te dirai de jour des choses plus grandes que celles que j'ai entendues.
If thou wilt pray yet more, and fast seven days again, I shall tell thee greater things by day than I have heard.
Car ta voix est entendue devant le Très-Haut : car le Puissant a vu ta conduite juste, il a vu aussi ta chasteté, que tu as gardée depuis ta jeunesse.
For thy voice is heard before the most High: for the Mighty hath seen thy righteous dealing, he hath seen also thy chastity, which thou hast had ever since thy youth.
Et c'est pourquoi il m'a envoyé pour te montrer toutes ces choses, et pour te dire : Prends courage et ne crains point,
And therefore hath he sent me to shew thee all these things, and to say unto thee, Be of good comfort and fear not
Et ne te hâte pas avec les temps passés de penser des choses vaines, afin que tu ne te hâtes pas loin des derniers temps.
And hasten not with the times that are past, to think vain things, that thou mayest not hasten from the latter times.
Et il arriva après cela que je pleurai de nouveau, et je jeûnai sept jours de la même manière, afin d'accomplir les trois semaines qu'il m'avait dites.
And it came to pass after this, that I wept again, and fasted seven days in like manner, that I might fulfil the three weeks which he told me.
Et la huitième nuit, mon cœur fut de nouveau tourmenté en moi, et je commençai à parler devant le Très-Haut.
And in the eighth night was my heart vexed within me again, and I began to speak before the most High.
Car mon esprit était vivement enflammé, et mon âme était dans l'angoisse.
For my spirit was greatly set on fire, and my soul was in distress.
Et je dis : Ô Seigneur, tu as parlé dès le commencement de la création, au premier jour même, et tu as dit ainsi : Que le ciel et la terre soient faits ; et ta parole fut une œuvre parfaite.
And I said, O Lord, thou spakest from the beginning of the creation, even the first day, and saidst thus; Let heaven and earth be made; and thy word was a perfect work.
Et alors était l'esprit, et les ténèbres et le silence étaient de tous côtés ; le son de la voix de l'homme n'était pas encore formé.
And then was the spirit, and darkness and silence were on every side; the sound of man’s voice was not yet formed.
Alors tu commandas qu'une belle lumière sortît de tes trésors, afin que ton œuvre pût paraître.
Then commandedst thou a fair light to come forth of thy treasures, that thy work might appear.
Le second jour, tu fis l'esprit du firmament, et tu lui commandas de se séparer, et de faire une division entre les eaux, afin qu'une partie montât et que l'autre restât en bas.
Upon the second day thou madest the spirit of the firmament, and commandedst it to part asunder, and to make a division betwixt the waters, that the one part might go up, and the other remain beneath.
Le troisième jour, tu commandas que les eaux fussent rassemblées dans la septième partie de la terre : tu en as séché six parties et les as gardées, afin que certaines d'entre elles, étant plantées de Dieu et cultivées, pussent te servir.
Upon the third day thou didst command that the waters should be gathered in the seventh part of the earth: six pats hast thou dried up, and kept them, to the intent that of these some being planted of God and tilled might serve thee.
Car aussitôt que ta parole fut sortie, l'œuvre fut faite.
For as soon as thy word went forth the work was made.
Car aussitôt il y eut des fruits grands et innombrables, et des plaisirs nombreux et divers pour le goût, et des fleurs d'une couleur immuable, et des odeurs d'une senteur merveilleuse : et cela fut fait le troisième jour.
For immediately there was great and innumerable fruit, and many and divers pleasures for the taste, and flowers of unchangeable colour, and odours of wonderful smell: and this was done the third day.
Le quatrième jour, tu commandas que le soleil brillât, et que la lune donnât sa lumière, et que les étoiles fussent en ordre :
Upon the fourth day thou commandedst that the sun should shine, and the moon give her light, and the stars should be in order:
Et tu leur donnas la charge de servir l'homme qui devait être fait.
And gavest them a charge to do service unto man, that was to be made.
Le cinquième jour, tu dis à la septième partie, où les eaux étaient rassemblées, qu'elle produisît des créatures vivantes, des oiseaux et des poissons : et il en fut ainsi.
Upon the fifth day thou saidst unto the seventh part, where the waters were gathered that it should bring forth living creatures, fowls and fishes: and so it came to pass.
Car l'eau muette et sans vie produisit des êtres vivants au commandement de Dieu, afin que tous les peuples pussent louer tes œuvres merveilleuses.
For the dumb water and without life brought forth living things at the commandment of God, that all people might praise thy wondrous works.
Alors tu ordonnas deux créatures vivantes, l'une que tu appelas Énoch, et l'autre Léviathan ;
Then didst thou ordain two living creatures, the one thou calledst Enoch, and the other Leviathan;
Et tu les séparas l'une de l'autre : car la septième partie, savoir là où l'eau était rassemblée, ne pouvait les contenir toutes deux.
And didst separate the one from the other: for the seventh part, namely, where the water was gathered together, might not hold them both.
À Énoch tu donnas une partie, qui fut séchée le troisième jour, afin qu'il habitât dans cette même partie, où se trouvent mille collines :
Unto Enoch thou gavest one part, which was dried up the third day, that he should dwell in the same part, wherein are a thousand hills:
Mais à Léviathan tu donnas la septième partie, savoir l'humide ; et tu l'as gardé pour être dévoré par qui tu voudras, et quand tu voudras.
But unto Leviathan thou gavest the seventh part, namely, the moist; and hast kept him to be devoured of whom thou wilt, and when.
Le sixième jour, tu donnas commandement à la terre de produire devant toi des bêtes, du bétail et des reptiles :
Upon the sixth day thou gavest commandment unto the earth, that before thee it should bring forth beasts, cattle, and creeping things:
Et après ceux-ci, Adam aussi, que tu as fait seigneur de toutes tes créatures : de lui nous sommes tous issus, ainsi que le peuple que tu as choisi.
And after these, Adam also, whom thou madest lord of all thy creatures: of him come we all, and the people also whom thou hast chosen.
J'ai dit tout cela devant toi, ô Seigneur, parce que tu as fait le monde à cause de nous.
All this have I spoken before thee, O Lord, because thou madest the world for our sakes
Quant aux autres peuples, qui sont aussi issus d'Adam, tu as dit qu'ils ne sont rien, mais qu'ils sont semblables à de la salive ; et tu as comparé leur multitude à une goutte qui tombe d'un vase.
As for the other people, which also come of Adam, thou hast said that they are nothing, but be like unto spittle: and hast likened the abundance of them unto a drop that falleth from a vessel.
Et maintenant, ô Seigneur, voici, ces nations, qui ont toujours été réputées pour rien, ont commencé à dominer sur nous et à nous dévorer.
And now, O Lord, behold, these heathen, which have ever been reputed as nothing, have begun to be lords over us, and to devour us.
Mais nous, ton peuple, que tu as appelé ton premier-né, ton fils unique et ton amant passionné, nous sommes livrés entre leurs mains.
But we thy people, whom thou hast called thy firstborn, thy only begotten, and thy fervent lover, are given into their hands.
Si le monde est maintenant fait à cause de nous, pourquoi ne possédons-nous pas un héritage avec le monde ? jusques à quand cela durera-t-il ?
If the world now be made for our sakes, why do we not possess an inheritance with the world? how long shall this endure?
Et quand j'eus fini de prononcer ces paroles, l'ange qui m'avait été envoyé les nuits précédentes me fut envoyé :
And when I had made an end of speaking these words, there was sent unto me the angel which had been sent unto me the nights afore:
Et il me dit : Lève-toi, Esdras, et écoute les paroles que je suis venu te dire.
And he said unto me, Up, Esdras, and hear the words that I am come to tell thee.
Et je dis : Parle, mon Dieu. Alors il me dit : La mer est placée dans un lieu vaste, afin qu'elle soit profonde et grande.
And I said, Speak on, my God. Then said he unto me, The sea is set in a wide place, that it might be deep and great.
Mais suppose que l'entrée en soit étroite, et semblable à un fleuve ;
But put the case the entrance were narrow, and like a river;
Qui donc pourrait entrer dans la mer pour la contempler et pour la dominer ? s'il ne passait par l'étroit, comment pourrait-il arriver au large ?
Who then could go into the sea to look upon it, and to rule it? if he went not through the narrow, how could he come into the broad?
Il y a aussi une autre chose : Une ville est bâtie, et située dans une vaste plaine, et elle est pleine de tous les biens :
There is also another thing; A city is builded, and set upon a broad field, and is full of all good things:
Son entrée est étroite, et située dans un lieu dangereux pour la chute, comme s'il y avait un feu à main droite, et à gauche une eau profonde :
The entrance thereof is narrow, and is set in a dangerous place to fall, like as if there were a fire on the right hand, and on the left a deep water:
Et un seul sentier entre les deux, savoir entre le feu et l'eau, si petit qu'un seul homme pourrait y passer à la fois.
And one only path between them both, even between the fire and the water, so small that there could but one man go there at once.
Si cette ville était maintenant donnée à un homme pour héritage, s'il ne passait jamais le danger placé devant elle, comment recevrait-il cet héritage ?
If this city now were given unto a man for an inheritance, if he never shall pass the danger set before it, how shall he receive this inheritance?
Et je dis : Il en est ainsi, Seigneur. Alors il me dit : Telle est aussi la part d'Israël.
And I said, It is so, Lord. Then said he unto me, Even so also is Israel’s portion.
Car c'est pour eux que j'ai fait le monde ; et quand Adam transgressa mes ordonnances, alors fut décrété ce qui s'accomplit maintenant.
Because for their sakes I made the world: and when Adam transgressed my statutes, then was decreed that now is done.
Alors les entrées de ce monde devinrent étroites, pleines de tristesse et de labeur ; elles sont peu nombreuses et mauvaises, pleines de périls et de grandes douleurs.
Then were the entrances of this world made narrow, full of sorrow and travail: they are but few and evil, full of perils,: and very painful.
Car les entrées du monde premier étaient larges et sûres, et apportaient des fruits d'immortalité.
For the entrances of the elder world were wide and sure, and brought immortal fruit.
Si donc ceux qui vivent ne s'efforcent d'entrer dans ces choses étroites et vaines, ils ne pourront jamais recevoir celles qui leur sont réservées.
If then they that live labour not to enter these strait and vain things, they can never receive those that are laid up for them.
Maintenant donc, pourquoi t'inquiètes-tu, toi qui n'es qu'un homme corruptible ? et pourquoi es-tu troublé, alors que tu n'es que mortel ?
Now therefore why disquietest thou thyself, seeing thou art but a corruptible man? and why art thou moved, whereas thou art but mortal?
Pourquoi n'as-tu pas considéré en ton esprit ce qui est à venir, plutôt que ce qui est présent ?
Why hast thou not considered in thy mind this thing that is to come, rather than that which is present?
Alors je répondis et dis : Ô Seigneur souverain, tu as ordonné dans ta loi que les justes hériteraient de ces choses, mais que les impies périraient.
Then answered I and said, O Lord that bearest rule, thou hast ordained in thy law, that the righteous should inherit these things, but that the ungodly should perish.
Néanmoins, les justes souffriront des choses étroites, espérant les larges ; car ceux qui ont agi avec impiété ont souffert les choses étroites, et pourtant ils ne verront pas les larges.
Nevertheless the righteous shall suffer strait things, and hope for wide: for they that have done wickedly have suffered the strait things, and yet shall not see the wide.
Et il me dit : Il n'y a point de juge au-dessus de Dieu, et nul n'a d'intelligence au-dessus du Très-Haut.
And he said unto me. There is no judge above God, and none that hath understanding above the Highest.
Car il y en a beaucoup qui périssent en cette vie, parce qu'ils méprisent la loi de Dieu qui est mise devant eux.
For there be many that perish in this life, because they despise the law of God that is set before them.
Car Dieu a donné un commandement précis à ceux qui venaient, sur ce qu'ils devaient faire pour vivre, dès leur venue, et sur ce qu'ils devaient observer pour éviter le châtiment.
For God hath given strait commandment to such as came, what they should do to live, even as they came, and what they should observe to avoid punishment.
Néanmoins, ils ne lui obéirent point ; mais ils parlèrent contre lui, et imaginèrent des choses vaines ;
Nevertheless they were not obedient unto him; but spake against him, and imagined vain things;
Et ils se séduisirent par leurs œuvres mauvaises ; ils dirent du Très-Haut qu'il n'est pas, et ne connurent point ses voies :
And deceived themselves by their wicked deeds; and said of the most High, that he is not; and knew not his ways:
Mais ils ont méprisé sa loi, et nié ses alliances ; ils n'ont pas été fidèles à ses ordonnances, et n'ont pas accompli ses œuvres.
But his law have they despised, and denied his covenants; in his statutes have they not been faithful, and have not performed his works.
C'est pourquoi, Esdras, aux vides les choses vides, et aux pleins les choses pleines.
And therefore, Esdras, for the empty are empty things, and for the full are the full things.
Voici, le temps viendra où ces signes que je t'ai annoncés s'accompliront, et l'épouse paraîtra, et celle qui est maintenant retirée de la terre se montrera en sortant.
Behold, the time shall come, that these tokens which I have told thee shall come to pass, and the bride shall appear, and she coming forth shall be seen, that now is withdrawn from the earth.
Et quiconque sera délivré des maux susdits verra mes merveilles.
And whosoever is delivered from the foresaid evils shall see my wonders.
Car mon fils Jésus sera révélé avec ceux qui sont avec lui, et ceux qui resteront se réjouiront pendant quatre cents ans.
For my son Jesus shall be revealed with those that be with him, and they that remain shall rejoice within four hundred years.
Après ces années, mon fils le Christ mourra, ainsi que tous les hommes qui ont la vie.
After these years shall my son Christ die, and all men that have life.
Et le monde sera rendu au silence antique pendant sept jours, comme lors des premiers jugements, de sorte qu'il ne restera aucun homme.
And the world shall be turned into the old silence seven days, like as in the former judgments: so that no man shall remain.
Et après sept jours, le monde, qui ne s'éveille pas encore, sera ressuscité, et ce qui est corruptible mourra.
And after seven days the world, that yet awaketh not, shall be raised up, and that shall die that is corrupt
Et la terre rendra ceux qui dorment en elle, et la poussière ceux qui demeurent dans le silence, et les lieux secrets délivreront les âmes qui leur avaient été confiées.
And the earth shall restore those that are asleep in her, and so shall the dust those that dwell in silence, and the secret places shall deliver those souls that were committed unto them.
Et le Très-Haut paraîtra sur le siège du jugement, et la misère passera, et la longanimité prendra fin :
And the most High shall appear upon the seat of judgment, and misery shall pass away, and the long suffering shall have an end:
Mais le jugement seul subsistera, la vérité demeurera, et la foi se fortifiera :
But judgment only shall remain, truth shall stand, and faith shall wax strong:
Et l'œuvre suivra, et la récompense sera manifestée, et les bonnes actions prévaudront, et les mauvaises actions ne domineront plus.
And the work shall follow, and the reward shall be shewed, and the good deeds shall be of force, and wicked deeds shall bear no rule.
Alors je dis : Abraham pria le premier pour les Sodomites, et Moïse pour les pères qui avaient péché dans le désert :
Then said I, Abraham prayed first for the Sodomites, and Moses for the fathers that sinned in the wilderness:
Et Josué après lui pour Israël au temps d'Acan :
And Jesus after him for Israel in the time of Achan:
Et Samuel et David pour la destruction ; et Salomon pour ceux qui devaient venir au sanctuaire :
And Samuel and David for the destruction: and Solomon for them that should come to the sanctuary:
Et Élie pour ceux qui reçurent la pluie, et pour le mort, afin qu'il vécût :
And Helias for those that received rain; and for the dead, that he might live:
Et Ézéchias pour le peuple au temps de Sennachérib ; et beaucoup pour beaucoup.
And Ezechias for the people in the time of Sennacherib: and many for many.
De même maintenant, puisque la corruption a grandi et que l'impiété s'est accrue, et que les justes ont prié pour les impies, pourquoi n'en serait-il pas de même aussi maintenant ?
Even so now, seeing corruption is grown up, and wickedness increased, and the righteous have prayed for the ungodly: wherefore shall it not be so now also?
Il me répondit et dit : Cette vie présente n'est pas la fin où demeure beaucoup de gloire ; c'est pourquoi ils ont prié pour les faibles.
He answered me, and said, This present life is not the end where much glory doth abide; therefore have they prayed for the weak.
Mais le jour du jugement sera la fin de ce temps, et le commencement de l'immortalité à venir, où la corruption est passée,
But the day of doom shall be the end of this time, and the beginning of the immortality for to come, wherein corruption is past,
L'intempérance a pris fin, l'infidélité est retranchée, la justice a grandi, et la vérité a jailli.
Intemperance is at an end, infidelity is cut off, righteousness is grown, and truth is sprung up.
Alors nul ne pourra sauver celui qui est perdu, ni opprimer celui qui a remporté la victoire.
Then shall no man be able to save him that is destroyed, nor to oppress him that hath gotten the victory.
Je répondis alors et dis : C'est là ma première et ma dernière parole, qu'il eût mieux valu ne pas donner la terre à Adam, ou bien, quand elle lui fut donnée, l'empêcher de pécher.
I answered then and said, This is my first and last saying, that it had been better not to have given the earth unto Adam: or else, when it was given him, to have restrained him from sinning.
Car quel profit est-ce pour les hommes de vivre maintenant dans la tristesse, et d'attendre le châtiment après la mort ?
For what profit is it for men now in this present time to live in heaviness, and after death to look for punishment?
Ô toi, Adam, qu'as-tu fait ? Car bien que ce soit toi qui aies péché, tu n'es pas tombé seul, mais nous tous qui sommes issus de toi.
O thou Adam, what hast thou done? for though it was thou that sinned, thou art not fallen alone, but we all that come of thee.
Car quel profit y a-t-il pour nous, s'il nous est promis un temps immortel, alors que nous avons fait les œuvres qui apportent la mort ?
For what profit is it unto us, if there be promised us an immortal time, whereas we have done the works that bring death?
Et qu'une espérance éternelle nous soit promise, alors que nous-mêmes, étant très mauvais, sommes devenus vains ?
And that there is promised us an everlasting hope, whereas ourselves being most wicked are made vain?
Et que des demeures de santé et de salut nous soient réservées, alors que nous avons vécu avec impiété ?
And that there are laid up for us dwellings of health and safety, whereas we have lived wickedly?
Et que la gloire du Très-Haut soit gardée pour défendre ceux qui ont mené une vie vigilante, alors que nous avons marché dans les voies les plus mauvaises de toutes ?
And that the glory of the most High is kept to defend them which have led a wary life, whereas we have walked in the most wicked ways of all?
Et qu'un paradis doive être montré, dont le fruit demeure éternellement, où se trouvent la sécurité et le remède, puisque nous n'y entrerons pas ?
And that there should be shewed a paradise, whose fruit endureth for ever, wherein is security and medicine, since we shall not enter into it?
(Car nous avons marché dans des lieux désagréables.)
(For we have walked in unpleasant places.)
Et que les visages de ceux qui ont pratiqué l'abstinence brilleront plus que les étoiles, alors que nos visages seront plus noirs que les ténèbres ?
And that the faces of them which have used abstinence shall shine above the stars, whereas our faces shall be blacker than darkness?
Car tandis que nous vivions et commettions l'iniquité, nous ne considérions pas que nous commencerions à en souffrir après la mort.
For while we lived and committed iniquity, we considered not that we should begin to suffer for it after death.
Alors il me répondit et dit : Telle est la condition du combat que l'homme né sur la terre doit livrer ;
Then answered he me, and said, This is the condition of the battle, which man that is born upon the earth shall fight;
S'il est vaincu, il souffrira ce que tu as dit ; mais s'il remporte la victoire, il recevra ce que je dis.
That, if he be overcome, he shall suffer as thou hast said: but if he get the victory, he shall receive the thing that I say.
Car c'est là la vie dont Moïse parla au peuple pendant qu'il vivait, disant : Choisis la vie, afin que tu vives.
For this is the life whereof Moses spake unto the people while he lived, saying, Choose thee life, that thou mayest live.
Néanmoins, ils ne le crurent point, ni les prophètes après lui, ni moi non plus qui leur ai parlé,
Nevertheless they believed not him, nor yet the prophets after him, no nor me which have spoken unto them,
De sorte qu'il n'y ait pas autant de tristesse dans leur destruction qu'il y aura de joie sur ceux qui sont persuadés du salut.
That there should not be such heaviness in their destruction, as shall be joy over them that are persuaded to salvation.
Je répondis alors et dis : Je sais, Seigneur, que le Très-Haut est appelé miséricordieux, en ce qu'il a pitié de ceux qui ne sont pas encore venus au monde,
I answered then, and said, I know, Lord, that the most High is called merciful, in that he hath mercy upon them which are not yet come into the world,
Et aussi de ceux qui se tournent vers sa loi ;
And upon those also that turn to his law;
Et qu'il est patient, et qu'il supporte longtemps ceux qui ont péché, comme étant ses créatures ;
And that he is patient, and long suffereth those that have sinned, as his creatures;
Et qu'il est généreux, car il est prêt à donner là où il est besoin ;
And that he is bountiful, for he is ready to give where it needeth;
Et qu'il est d'une grande miséricorde, car il multiplie de plus en plus ses miséricordes envers ceux qui sont présents, ceux qui sont passés, et aussi ceux qui sont à venir.
And that he is of great mercy, for he multiplieth more and more mercies to them that are present, and that are past, and also to them which are to come.
Car s'il ne multipliait pas ses miséricordes, le monde ne subsisterait pas avec ceux qui l'habitent.
For if he shall not multiply his mercies, the world would not continue with them that inherit therein.
Et il pardonne ; car s'il ne le faisait pas dans sa bonté, afin que ceux qui ont commis des iniquités en fussent soulagés, la dix-millième partie des hommes ne resterait pas vivante.
And he pardoneth; for if he did not so of his goodness, that they which have committed iniquities might be eased of them, the ten thousandth part of men should not remain living.
Et étant juge, s'il ne pardonnait pas à ceux qui sont guéris par sa parole, et n'effaçait pas la multitude des offenses,
And being judge, if he should not forgive them that are cured with his word, and put out the multitude of contentions,
Il n'en resterait peut-être que très peu dans une multitude innombrable.
There should be very few left peradventure in an innumerable multitude.
Et il me répondit, disant : Le Très-Haut a fait ce monde pour beaucoup, mais le monde à venir pour peu.
And he answered me, saying, The most High hath made this world for many, but the world to come for few.
Je te dirai une similitude, Esdras ; comme lorsque tu interroges la terre, elle te dira qu'elle donne beaucoup de terre dont on fait des vases d'argile, mais peu de poussière d'où vient l'or : ainsi est le cours de ce monde présent.
I will tell thee a similitude, Esdras; As when thou askest the earth, it shall say unto thee, that it giveth much mould whereof earthen vessels are made, but little dust that gold cometh of: even so is the course of this present world.
Il y en a beaucoup de créés, mais peu seront sauvés.
There be many created, but few shall be saved.
Alors je répondis et dis : Engloutis donc, ô mon âme, l'intelligence, et dévore la sagesse.
So answered I and said, Swallow then down, O my soul, understanding, and devour wisdom.
Car tu as consenti à prêter l'oreille, et tu es prête à prophétiser ; car tu n'as plus d'autre temps que celui de vivre.
For thou hast agreed to give ear, and art willing to prophesy: for thou hast no longer space than only to live.
Ô Seigneur, si tu ne permets à ton serviteur de prier devant toi, et si tu ne nous donnes une semence pour notre cœur et une culture pour notre intelligence, afin qu'il en vienne du fruit, comment vivra tout homme corruptible qui porte le nom d'homme ?
O Lord, if thou suffer not thy servant, that we may pray before thee, and thou give us seed unto our heart, and culture to our understanding, that there may come fruit of it; how shall each man live that is corrupt, who beareth the place of a man?
Car tu es seul, et nous sommes tous l'ouvrage de tes mains, comme tu l'as dit.
For thou art alone, and we all one workmanship of thine hands, like as thou hast said.
Car lorsque le corps est façonné dans le sein de la mère, et que tu lui donnes des membres, ta créature est préservée dans le feu et l'eau, et pendant neuf mois ton ouvrage supporte ta créature qui est créée en elle.
For when the body is fashioned now in the mother’s womb, and thou givest it members, thy creature is preserved in fire and water, and nine months doth thy workmanship endure thy creature which is created in her.
Mais ce qui garde et ce qui est gardé seront tous deux préservés ; et quand le temps vient, la matrice préservée rend les choses qui ont crû en elle.
But that which keepeth and is kept shall both be preserved: and when the time cometh, the womb preserved delivereth up the things that grew in it.
Car tu as ordonné que des parties du corps, c'est-à-dire des mamelles, le lait soit donné, qui est le fruit des mamelles,
For thou hast commanded out of the parts of the body, that is to say, out of the breasts, milk to be given, which is the fruit of the breasts,
Afin que ce qui est façonné soit nourri pendant un temps, jusqu'à ce que tu en disposes selon ta miséricorde.
That the thing which is fashioned may be nourished for a time, till thou disposest it to thy mercy.
Tu l'as élevé dans ta justice, tu l'as nourri dans ta loi, et tu l'as corrigé par ton jugement.
Thou broughtest it up with thy righteousness, and nurturedst it in thy law, and reformedst it with thy judgment.
Et tu le feras mourir comme ta créature, et tu le feras vivre comme ton ouvrage.
And thou shalt mortify it as thy creature, and quicken it as thy work.
Si donc tu détruis celui qui a été façonné avec tant de labeur, il est aisé d'ordonner par ton commandement que ce qui a été fait soit préservé.
If therefore thou shalt destroy him which with so great labour was fashioned, it is an easy thing to be ordained by thy commandment, that the thing which was made might be preserved.
Maintenant donc, Seigneur, je parlerai ; concernant l'homme en général, tu le sais mieux ; mais concernant ton peuple, pour lequel je suis affligé ;
Now therefore, Lord, I will speak; touching man in general, thou knowest best; but touching thy people, for whose sake I am sorry;
Et pour ton héritage, pour lequel je mène deuil ; et pour Israël, pour qui je suis accablé ; et pour Jacob, pour qui je suis troublé ;
And for thine inheritance, for whose cause I mourn; and for Israel, for whom I am heavy; and for Jacob, for whose sake I am troubled;
C'est pourquoi je commencerai à prier devant toi pour moi-même et pour eux, car je vois les chutes de nous qui habitons le pays.
Therefore will I begin to pray before thee for myself and for them: for I see the falls of us that dwell in the land.
Mais j'ai entendu parler de la promptitude du juge qui doit venir.
But I have heard the swiftness of the judge which is to come.
Écoute donc ma voix, et comprends mes paroles, et je parlerai devant toi. C'est ici le commencement des paroles d'Esdras, avant qu'il fût enlevé ; et je dis :
Therefore hear my voice, and understand my words, and I shall speak before thee. This is the beginning of the words of Esdras, before he was taken up: and I said,
Ô Seigneur, toi qui habites l'éternité, qui regardes d'en haut les choses du ciel et de l'air ;
O Lord, thou that dwellest in everlastingness which beholdest from above things in the heaven and in the air;
Dont le trône est inestimable, dont la gloire ne peut être comprise, devant qui les armées des anges se tiennent avec tremblement,
Whose throne is inestimable; whose glory may not be comprehended; before whom the hosts of angels stand with trembling,
Dont le service s'accomplit dans le vent et le feu, dont la parole est vraie et les dires constants, dont le commandement est fort et l'ordonnance redoutable ;
Whose service is conversant in wind and fire; whose word is true, and sayings constant; whose commandment is strong, and ordinance fearful;
Dont le regard dessèche les abîmes, et dont l'indignation fait fondre les montagnes, ce dont la vérité témoigne :
Whose look drieth up the depths, and indignation maketh the mountains to melt away; which the truth witnesseth:
Ô écoute la prière de ton serviteur, et prête l'oreille à la supplication de ta créature.
O hear the prayer of thy servant, and give ear to the petition of thy creature.
Car tant que je vivrai, je parlerai, et tant que j'aurai de l'intelligence, je répondrai.
For while I live I will speak, and so long as I have understanding I will answer.
Ô ne regarde pas aux péchés de ton peuple, mais à ceux qui te servent en vérité.
O look not upon the sins of thy people; but on them which serve thee in truth.
Ne prends pas garde aux méchantes inventions des païens, mais au désir de ceux qui gardent tes témoignages dans les afflictions.
Regard not the wicked inventions of the heathen, but the desire of those that keep thy testimonies in afflictions.
Ne pense pas à ceux qui ont marché avec feinte devant toi, mais souviens-toi de ceux qui, selon ta volonté, ont connu ta crainte.
Think not upon those that have walked feignedly before thee: but remember them, which according to thy will have known thy fear.
Que ce ne soit pas ta volonté de détruire ceux qui ont vécu comme des bêtes, mais de regarder ceux qui ont enseigné clairement ta loi.
Let it not be thy will to destroy them which have lived like beasts; but to look upon them that have clearly taught thy law.
Ne t'indigne pas contre ceux qui sont jugés pires que les bêtes, mais aime ceux qui mettent toujours leur confiance en ta justice et en ta gloire.
Take thou no indignation at them which are deemed worse than beasts; but love them that always put their trust in thy righteousness and glory.
Car nous et nos pères languissons de telles maladies ; mais à cause de nous, pécheurs, tu seras appelé miséricordieux.
For we and our fathers do languish of such diseases: but because of us sinners thou shalt be called merciful.
Car si tu avez le désir d'avoir pitié de nous, tu seras appelé miséricordieux, envers nous précisément qui n'avons pas d'œuvres de justice.
For if thou hast a desire to have mercy upon us, thou shalt be called merciful, to us namely, that have no works of righteousness.
Car les justes, qui ont beaucoup de bonnes œuvres réservées auprès de toi, recevront leur récompense d'après leurs propres actions.
For the just, which have many good works laid up with thee, shall out of their own deeds receive reward.
Car qu'est-ce que l'homme, pour que tu t'irrites contre lui ? ou qu'est-ce qu'une génération corruptible, pour que tu sois si amer envers elle ?
For what is man, that thou shouldest take displeasure at him? or what is a corruptible generation, that thou shouldest be so bitter toward it?
Car en vérité, il n'y a aucun homme parmi ceux qui sont nés qui n'ait agi avec impiété, et parmi les fidèles, il n'en est aucun qui n'ait commis de faute.
For in truth them is no man among them that be born, but he hath dealt wickedly; and among the faithful there is none which hath not done amiss.
Car en cela, ô Seigneur, ta justice et ta bonté seront déclarées, si tu es miséricordieux envers ceux qui n'ont pas l'assurance des bonnes œuvres.
For in this, O Lord, thy righteousness and thy goodness shall be declared, if thou be merciful unto them which have not the confidence of good works.
Alors il me répondit et dit : Tu as parlé avec justesse sur certains points, et il en sera selon tes paroles.
Then answered he me, and said, Some things hast thou spoken aright, and according unto thy words it shall be.
Car en vérité, je ne penserai pas à la condition de ceux qui ont péché avant la mort, avant le jugement, avant la destruction :
For indeed I will not think on the disposition of them which have sinned before death, before judgment, before destruction:
Mais je me réjouirai de la condition des justes, et je me souviendrai aussi de leur pèlerinage, du salut et de la récompense qu'ils recevront.
But I will rejoice over the disposition of the righteous, and I will remember also their pilgrimage, and the salvation, and the reward, that they shall have.
Comme je l'ai dit maintenant, ainsi cela arrivera.
Like as I have spoken now, so shall it come to pass.
Car comme le laboureur sème beaucoup de semence sur la terre et plante beaucoup d'arbres, et pourtant ce qui est semé ne lève pas toujours en sa saison, et tout ce qui est planté ne prend pas racine : ainsi en est-il de ceux qui sont semés dans le monde ; ils ne seront pas tous sauvés.
For as the husbandman soweth much seed upon the ground, and planteth many trees, and yet the thing that is sown good in his season cometh not up, neither doth all that is planted take root: even so is it of them that are sown in the world; they shall not all be saved.
Je répondis alors et dis : Si j'ai trouvé grâce, laisse-moi parler.
I answered then and said, If I have found grace, let me speak.
Comme la semence du laboureur périt si elle ne lève pas et ne reçoit pas ta pluie en sa saison, ou s'il vient trop de pluie et qu'elle la corrompe :
Like as the husbandman’s seed perisheth, if it come not up, and receive not thy rain in due season; or if there come too much rain, and corrupt it:
Ainsi périt aussi l'homme, qui est formé de tes mains et appelé ton image, parce que tu lui es semblable, lui pour qui tu as fait toutes choses, et que tu as comparé à la semence du laboureur.
Even so perisheth man also, which is formed with thy hands, and is called thine own image, because thou art like unto him, for whose sake thou hast made all things, and likened him unto the husbandman’s seed.
Ne t'irrite pas contre nous, mais épargne ton peuple, et aie pitié de ton propre héritage ; car tu es miséricordieux envers ta créature.
Be not wroth with us but spare thy people, and have mercy upon thine own inheritance: for thou art merciful unto thy creature.
Alors il me répondit et dit : Les choses présentes sont pour le présent, et les choses à venir pour ceux qui sont à venir.
Then answered he me, and said, Things present are for the present, and things to cometh for such as be to come.
Car tu es loin de pouvoir aimer ma créature plus que moi ; mais je me suis souvent approché de toi et d'elle, mais jamais des injustes.
For thou comest far short that thou shouldest be able to love my creature more than I: but I have ofttimes drawn nigh unto thee, and unto it, but never to the unrighteous.
En cela aussi tu es merveilleux devant le Très-Haut :
In this also thou art marvellous before the most High:
En ce que tu t'es humilié, comme il te convient, et que tu ne t'es pas jugé digne d'être fort glorifié parmi les justes.
In that thou hast humbled thyself, as it becometh thee, and hast not judged thyself worthy to be much glorified among the righteous.
Car de grandes misères arriveront à ceux qui, dans les derniers temps, habiteront le monde, parce qu'ils ont marché dans un grand orgueil.
For many great miseries shall be done to them that in the latter time shall dwell in the world, because they have walked in great pride.
Mais comprends pour toi-même, et recherche la gloire pour ceux qui te ressemblent.
But understand thou for thyself, and seek out the glory for such as be like thee.
Car pour vous le paradis est ouvert, l'arbre de vie est planté, le temps à venir est préparé, l'abondance est prête, une ville est bâtie, et le repos est accordé, oui, la bonté et la sagesse parfaites.
For unto you is paradise opened, the tree of life is planted, the time to come is prepared, plenteousness is made ready, a city is builded, and rest is allowed, yea, perfect goodness and wisdom.
La racine du mal est scellée loin de vous, la faiblesse et la teigne vous sont cachées, et la corruption s'est enfuie dans l'enfer pour être oubliée :
The root of evil is sealed up from you, weakness and the moth is hid from you, and corruption is fled into hell to be forgotten:
Les douleurs sont passées, et à la fin est manifesté le trésor de l'immortalité.
Sorrows are passed, and in the end is shewed the treasure of immortality.
C'est pourquoi ne pose plus de questions sur la multitude de ceux qui périssent.
And therefore ask thou no more questions concerning the multitude of them that perish.
Car lorsqu'ils eurent pris leur liberté, ils méprisèrent le Très-Haut, dédaignèrent sa loi et abandonnèrent ses voies.
For when they had taken liberty, they despised the most High, thought scorn of his law, and forsook his ways.
De plus, ils ont foulé aux pieds ses justes,
Moreover they have trodden down his righteous,
Et ont dit en leur cœur qu'il n'y a point de Dieu, et cela tout en sachant qu'ils devaient mourir.
And said in their heart, that there is no God; yea, and that knowing they must die.
Car de même que les choses susdites vous recevront, de même la soif et la douleur sont préparées pour eux ; car ce n'était pas sa volonté que les hommes fussent réduits à néant :
For as the things aforesaid shalt receive you, so thirst and pain are prepared for them: for it was not his will that men should come to nought:
Mais ceux qui ont été créés ont souillé le nom de celui qui les a faits, et ont été ingrats envers celui qui leur avait préparé la vie.
But they which be created have defiled the name of him that made them, and were unthankful unto him which prepared life for them.
C'est pourquoi mon jugement est maintenant proche.
And therefore is my judgment now at hand.
Je n'ai pas montré ces choses à tous les hommes, mais à toi et à quelques-uns semblables à toi. Alors je répondis et dis :
These things have I not shewed unto all men, but unto thee, and a few like thee. Then answered I and said,
Voici, ô Seigneur, tu m'as maintenant montré la multitude des merveilles que tu commenceras à faire dans les derniers temps ; mais à quel moment, tu ne me l'as pas montré.
Behold, O Lord, now hast thou shewed me the multitude of the wonders, which thou wilt begin to do in the last times: but at what time, thou hast not shewed me.
Il me répondit alors et dit : Mesure diligemment le temps en lui-même ; et quand tu verras qu'une partie des signes que je t'ai dits auparavant est passée,
He answered me then, and said, Measure thou the time diligently in itself: and when thou seest part of the signs past, which I have told thee before,
Alors tu comprendras que c'est le temps même où le Très-Haut commencera à visiter le monde qu'il a fait.
Then shalt thou understand, that it is the very same time, wherein the Highest will begin to visit the world which he made.
C'est pourquoi, lorsqu'on verra dans le monde des tremblements de terre et des soulèvements de peuples :
Therefore when there shall be seen earthquakes and uproars of the people in the world:
Alors tu comprendras bien que le Très-Haut a parlé de ces choses dès les jours qui t'ont précédé, dès le commencement.
Then shalt thou well understand, that the most High spake of those things from the days that were before thee, even from the beginning.
Car comme tout ce qui est fait dans le monde a un commencement et une fin, et que la fin est manifeste :
For like as all that is made in the world hath a beginning and an end, and the end is manifest:
De même aussi les temps du Très-Haut ont des commencements clairs en merveilles et en œuvres puissantes, et des fins en effets et en signes.
Even so the times also of the Highest have plain beginnings in wonder and powerful works, and endings in effects and signs.
Et quiconque sera sauvé, et pourra échapper par ses œuvres et par la foi par laquelle vous avez cru,
And every one that shall be saved, and shall be able to escape by his works, and by faith, whereby ye have believed,
Sera préservé desdits périls, et verra mon salut dans mon pays et dans mes frontières ; car je les ai sanctifiés pour moi dès le commencement.
Shall be preserved from the said perils, and shall see my salvation in my land, and within my borders: for I have sanctified them for me from the beginning.
Alors ils seront dans un état pitoyable, ceux qui ont maintenant abusé de mes voies ; et ceux qui les ont rejetées avec mépris demeureront dans les tourments.
Then shall they be in pitiful case, which now have abused my ways: and they that have cast them away despitefully shall dwell in torments.
Car ceux qui, dans leur vie, ont reçu des bienfaits et ne m'ont pas connu ;
For such as in their life have received benefits, and have not known me;
Et ceux qui ont eu ma loi en horreur, alors qu'ils avaient encore leur liberté, et qui, alors que le lieu de la repentance leur était encore ouvert, n'ont pas compris, mais l'ont méprisée ;
And they that have loathed my law, while they had yet liberty, and, when as yet place of repentance was open unto them, understood not, but despised it;
Ceux-là doivent le savoir après la mort par la douleur.
The same must know it after death by pain.
C'est pourquoi ne sois pas curieux de savoir comment les impies seront punis, ni quand ; mais demande comment les justes seront sauvés, à qui appartient le monde et pour qui le monde est créé.
And therefore be thou not curious how the ungodly shall be punished, and when: but enquire how the righteous shall be saved, whose the world is, and for whom the world is created.
Alors je répondis et dis :
Then answered I and said,
J'ai dit auparavant, et je le dis maintenant, et je le dirai aussi plus tard, qu'il y en a beaucoup plus qui périssent que de ceux qui seront sauvés :
I have said before, and now do speak, and will speak it also hereafter, that there be many more of them which perish, than of them which shall be saved:
Comme une vague est plus grande qu'une goutte.
Like as a wave is greater than a drop.
Et il me répondit, disant : Tel est le champ, telle est aussi la semence ; telles sont les fleurs, telles sont aussi les couleurs ; tel est l'ouvrier, tel est aussi l'ouvrage ; et tel est le laboureur lui-même, tel est aussi son labourage : car c'était le temps du monde.
And he answered me, saying, Like as the field is, so is also the seed; as the flowers be, such are the colours also; such as the workman is, such also is the work; and as the husbandman is himself, so is his husbandry also: for it was the time of the world.
Et maintenant, quand j'ai préparé le monde, qui n'était pas encore fait, pour que ceux qui vivent maintenant y habitent, personne n'a parlé contre moi.
And now when I prepared the world, which was not yet made, even for them to dwell in that now live, no man spake against me.
Car alors tous obéissaient ; mais maintenant les mœurs de ceux qui sont créés dans ce monde achevé sont corrompues par une semence perpétuelle, et par une loi insondable ils se perdent.
For then every one obeyed: but now the manners of them which are created in this world that is made are corrupted by a perpetual seed, and by a law which is unsearchable rid themselves.
J'ai donc considéré le monde, et voici, il y avait du péril à cause des complots qui y étaient survenus.
So I considered the world, and, behold, there was peril because of the devices that were come into it.
Et j'ai vu, et je l'ai épargné grandement, et je me suis gardé un grain de la grappe, et une plante d'un grand peuple.
And I saw, and spared it greatly, and have kept me a grape of the cluster, and a plant of a great people.
Que la multitude périsse donc, elle qui est née en vain ; et que mon grain soit gardé, ainsi que ma plante ; car c'est avec un grand labeur que je l'ai rendue parfaite.
Let the multitude perish then, which was born in vain; and let my grape be kept, and my plant; for with great labour have I made it perfect.
Néanmoins, si tu veux attendre encore sept jours, (mais tu ne jeûneras pas pendant ces jours-là,
Nevertheless, if thou wilt cease yet seven days more, (but thou shalt not fast in them,
Mais va dans un champ de fleurs, où aucune maison n'est bâtie, et ne mange que les fleurs du champ ; ne goûte à aucune chair, ne bois pas de vin, mais mange seulement des fleurs ;)
But go into a field of flowers, where no house is builded, and eat only the flowers of the field; taste no flesh, drink no wine, but eat flowers only;)
Et prie le Très-Haut continuellement, alors je viendrai et je parlerai avec toi.
And pray unto the Highest continually, then will I come and talk with thee.
Je m'en allai donc dans le champ appelé Ardath, comme il me l'avait ordonné ; et là je m'assis parmi les fleurs, et je mangeai des herbes du champ, et cette nourriture me rassasia.
So I went my way into the field which is called Ardath, like as he commanded me; and there I sat among the flowers, and did eat of the herbs of the field, and the meat of the same satisfied me.
Après sept jours, j'étais assis sur l'herbe, et mon cœur était tourmenté au-dedans de moi, comme auparavant :
After seven days I sat upon the grass, and my heart was vexed within me, like as before:
Et j'ouvris la bouche, et commençai à parler devant le Très-Haut, et je dis :
And I opened my mouth, and began to talk before the most High, and said,
Ô Seigneur, toi qui te montres à nous, tu t'es montré à nos pères dans le désert, dans un lieu où nul homme ne passe, dans un lieu stérile, quand ils sortirent d'Égypte.
O Lord, thou that shewest thyself unto us, thou wast shewed unto our fathers in the wilderness, in a place where no man treadeth, in a barren place, when they came out of Egypt.
Et tu parlas, disant : Écoute-moi, ô Israël ; et prends garde à mes paroles, ô semence de Jacob.
And thou spakest saying, Hear me, O Israel; and mark my words, thou seed of Jacob.
Car voici, je sème ma loi en vous, et elle portera du fruit en vous, et vous serez honorés en elle pour toujours.
For, behold, I sow my law in you, and it shall bring fruit in you, and ye shall be honoured in it for ever.
Mais nos pères, qui reçurent la loi, ne la gardèrent point, et n'observèrent pas tes ordonnances ; et bien que le fruit de ta loi ne pérît point, et ne le pût d'ailleurs, car il était à toi ;
But our fathers, which received the law, kept it not, and observed not thy ordinances: and though the fruit of thy law did not perish, neither could it, for it was thine;
Pourtant ceux qui l'avaient reçu périrent, parce qu'ils ne gardèrent pas ce qui avait été semé en eux.
Yet they that received it perished, because they kept not the thing that was sown in them.
Et voici, c'est une coutume, quand la terre a reçu de la semence, ou la mer un navire, ou un vase de la nourriture ou de la boisson, que si ce dans quoi la chose a été semée ou jetée vient à périr,
And, lo, it is a custom, when the ground hath received seed, or the sea a ship, or any vessel meat or drink, that, that being perished wherein it was sown or cast into,
Cette chose aussi qui y a été semée, ou jetée, ou reçue, périt et ne demeure pas avec nous ; mais avec nous, il n'en est pas arrivé ainsi.
That thing also which was sown, or cast therein, or received, doth perish, and remaineth not with us: but with us it hath not happened so.
Car nous qui avons reçu la loi, nous périssons par le péché, ainsi que notre cœur qui l'a reçue.
For we that have received the law perish by sin, and our heart also which received it
Néanmoins la loi ne périt pas, mais demeure dans sa force.
Notwithstanding the law perisheth not, but remaineth in his force.
Et tandis que je disais ces choses en mon cœur, je regardai derrière moi, et je vis à ma droite une femme, et voici, elle se lamentait et pleurait à haute voix, et elle était fort affligée en son cœur, et ses vêtements étaient déchirés, et elle avait de la cendre sur sa tête.
And when I spake these things in my heart, I looked back with mine eyes, and upon the right side I saw a woman, and, behold, she mourned and wept with a loud voice, and was much grieved in heart, and her clothes were rent, and she had ashes upon her head.
Alors je laissai les pensées où j'étais, et je me tournai vers elle,
Then let I my thoughts go that I was in, and turned me unto her,
Et lui dis : Pourquoi pleures-tu ? pourquoi es-tu si affligée en ton esprit ?
And said unto her, Wherefore weepest thou? why art thou so grieved in thy mind?
Et elle me dit : Seigneur, laisse-moi, afin que je me lamente sur moi-même et que j'ajoute à ma douleur, car je suis fort tourmentée en mon esprit et très humiliée.
And she said unto me, Sir, let me alone, that I may bewail myself, and add unto my sorrow, for I am sore vexed in my mind, and brought very low.
Et je lui dis : Qu'as-tu ? dis-le-moi.
And I said unto her, What aileth thee? tell me.
Elle me dit : Moi, ta servante, j'ai été stérile et n'ai point eu d'enfant, bien que j'eusse un mari pendant trente ans.
She said unto me, I thy servant have been barren, and had no child, though I had an husband thirty years,
Et pendant ces trente années, je n'ai rien fait d'autre, jour et nuit, et à chaque heure, que de faire ma prière au Très-Haut.
And those thirty years I did nothing else day and night, and every hour, but make my, prayer to the Highest.
Après trente ans, Dieu m'exauça, moi sa servante, regarda ma misère, considéra mon affliction et me donna un fils ; et j'en fus très joyeuse, ainsi que mon mari et tous mes voisins, et nous rendîmes un grand honneur au Tout-Puissant.
After thirty years God heard me thine handmaid, looked upon my misery, considered my trouble, and gave me a son: and I was very glad of him, so was my husband also, and all my neighbours: and we gave great honour unto the Almighty.
Et je l'ai nourri avec un grand labeur.
And I nourished him with great travail.
Puis, quand il eut grandi et fut arrivé au temps où il devait prendre femme, je fis un festin.
So when he grew up, and came to the time that he should have a wife, I made a feast.
Et il arriva que, lorsque mon fils fut entré dans sa chambre nuptiale, il tomba et mourut.
And it so came to pass, that when my son was entered into his wedding chamber, he fell down, and died.
Alors nous renversâmes tous les flambeaux, et tous mes voisins se levèrent pour me consoler ; et je restai en repos jusqu'au soir du second jour.
Then we all overthrew the lights, and all my neighbours rose up to comfort me: so I took my rest unto the second day at night.
Et il arriva que, lorsqu'ils eurent tous cessé de me consoler afin que je fusse tranquille, je me levai de nuit et m'enfuis, et je vins ici dans ce champ, comme tu le vois.
And it came to pass, when they had all left off to comfort me, to the end I might be quiet; then rose I up by night and fled, and came hither into this field, as thou seest.
Et je me propose maintenant de ne pas retourner à la ville, mais de rester ici, et de ne manger ni boire, mais de mener deuil et de jeûner continuellement jusqu'à ce que je meure.
And I do now purpose not to return into the city, but here to stay, and neither to eat nor drink, but continually to mourn and to fast until I die.
Alors je quittai les méditations où j'étais, et je lui parlai avec colère, disant :
Then left I the meditations wherein I was, and spake to her in anger, saying,
Femme insensée entre toutes, ne vois-tu pas notre deuil, et ce qui nous arrive ?
Thou foolish woman above all other, seest thou not our mourning, and what happeneth unto us?
Comment Sion notre mère est remplie de toute tristesse, et fort humiliée, menant un deuil très amer ?
How that Sion our mother is full of all heaviness, and much humbled, mourning very sore?
Et maintenant, puisque nous menons tous deuil et sommes tristes, car nous sommes tous dans l'affliction, es-tu affligée pour un seul fils ?
And now, seeing we all mourn and are sad, for we are all in heaviness, art thou grieved for one son?
Car interroge la terre, et elle te dira que c'est elle qui doit mener deuil pour la chute de tant d'êtres qui croissent sur elle.
For ask the earth, and she shall tell thee, that it is she which ought to mourn for the fall of so many that grow upon her.
Car d'elle tous sont sortis au commencement, et d'elle tous les autres sortiront ; et voici, ils marchent presque tous vers la destruction, et une multitude d'entre eux est totalement déracinée.
For out of her came all at the first, and out of her shall all others come, and, behold, they walk almost all into destruction, and a multitude of them is utterly rooted out.
Qui donc devrait mener plus de deuil qu'elle, qui a perdu une si grande multitude, et non pas toi, qui n'es affligée que pour un seul ?
Who then should make more mourning than she, that hath lost so great a multitude; and not thou, which art sorry but for one?
Mais si tu me dis : Ma lamentation n'est pas comme celle de la terre, parce que j'ai perdu le fruit de mes entrailles, que j'ai enfanté avec douleurs et porté avec tristesse ;
But if thou sayest unto me, My lamentation is not like the earth’s, because I have lost the fruit of my womb, which I brought forth with pains, and bare with sorrows;
Mais il n'en est pas ainsi de la terre, car la multitude qui s'y trouve est partie selon le cours de la terre, comme elle était venue :
But the earth not so: for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone, as it came:
Alors je te dis : Comme tu as enfanté avec labeur, de même aussi la terre a donné son fruit, à savoir l'homme, depuis le commencement à celui qui l'a faite.
Then say I unto thee, Like as thou hast brought forth with labour; even so the earth also hath given her fruit, namely, man, ever since the beginning unto him that made her.
Maintenant donc, garde ta douleur pour toi-même, et supporte avec un bon courage ce qui t'est arrivé.
Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thyself, and bear with a good courage that which hath befallen thee.
Car si tu reconnais que le décret de Dieu est juste, tu recouvreras ton fils en son temps, et tu seras louée parmi les femmes.
For if thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just, thou shalt both receive thy son in time, and shalt be commended among women.
Va donc ton chemin vers la ville, vers ton mari.
Go thy way then into the city to thine husband.
Et elle me dit : Je ne le ferai point ; je n'irai point à la ville, mais je mourrai ici.
And she said unto me, That will I not do: I will not go into the city, but here will I die.
Je continuai donc à lui parler davantage, et je dis :
So I proceeded to speak further unto her, and said,
Ne fais pas ainsi, mais laisse-toi conseiller par moi ; car combien nombreuses sont les adversités de Sion ? sois consolée à cause de la douleur de Jérusalem.
Do not so, but be counselled. by me: for how many are the adversities of Sion? be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem.
Car tu vois que notre sanctuaire est dévasté, notre autel renversé, notre temple détruit ;
For thou seest that our sanctuary is laid waste, our altar broken down, our temple destroyed;
Notre psaltérion est à terre, notre chant est réduit au silence, notre joie a pris fin, la lumière de notre chandelier est éteinte, l'arche de notre alliance est pillée, nos choses saintes sont souillées, et le nom qui est invoqué sur nous est presque profané ; nos enfants sont couverts de honte, nos prêtres sont brûlés, nos Lévites sont allés en captivité, nos vierges sont déshonorées et nos femmes ravies ; nos hommes justes sont emmenés, nos petits enfants sont détruits, nos jeunes gens sont mis en servitude, et nos hommes forts sont devenus faibles ;
Our psaltery is laid on the ground, our song is put to silence, our rejoicing is at an end, the light of our candlestick is put out, the ark of our covenant is spoiled, our holy things are defiled, and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned: our children are put to shame, our priests are burnt, our Levites are gone into captivity, our virgins are defiled, and our wives ravished; our righteous men carried away, our little ones destroyed, our young men are brought in bondage, and our strong men are become weak;
Et, ce qui est le plus grand de tout, le sceau de Sion a maintenant perdu son honneur, car elle est livrée entre les mains de ceux qui nous haïssent.
And, which is the greatest of all, the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour; for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us.
C'est pourquoi, secoue ta grande tristesse et rejette la multitude de tes douleurs, afin que le Puissant te soit de nouveau miséricordieux, et que le Très-Haut te donne le repos et le soulagement de ton labeur.
And therefore shake off thy great heaviness, and put away the multitude of sorrows, that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again, and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour.
Et il arriva que, pendant que je lui parlais, voici, son visage brilla soudain d'un éclat extraordinaire, et son aspect devint étincelant, de sorte que j'eus peur d'elle, et je me demandais ce que cela pouvait être.
And it came to pass while I was talking with her, behold, her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly, and her countenance glistered, so that I was afraid of her, and mused what it might be.
Et voici, soudain elle poussa un grand cri très effrayant, de sorte que la terre trembla au bruit de cette femme.
And, behold, suddenly she made a great cry very fearful: so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman.
Et je regardai, et voici, la femme ne m'apparaissait plus, mais il y avait une ville bâtie, et une vaste place se montrait depuis les fondements ; alors j'eus peur, et je criai à haute voix, disant :
And I looked, and, behold, the woman appeared unto me no more, but there was a city builded, and a large place shewed itself from the foundations: then was I afraid, and cried with a loud voice, and said,
Où est l'ange Uriel, qui est venu vers moi au commencement ? car il m'a fait tomber dans de nombreuses extases, et ma fin est changée en corruption, et ma prière en reproche.
Where is Uriel the angel, who came unto me at the first? for he hath caused me to fall into many trances, and mine end is turned into corruption, and my prayer to rebuke.
Et comme je disais ces paroles, voici, il vint vers moi et me regarda.
And as I was speaking these words behold, he came unto me, and looked upon me.
Et voici, j'étais étendu comme un mort, et mon intelligence m'avait été ôtée ; et il me prit par la main droite, me consola, me fit tenir sur mes pieds, et me dit :
And, lo, I lay as one that had been dead, and mine understanding was taken from me: and he took me by the right hand, and comforted me, and set me upon my feet, and said unto me,
Qu'as-tu ? et pourquoi es-tu si troublé ? et pourquoi ton intelligence et les pensées de ton cœur sont-elles agitées ?
What aileth thee? and why art thou so disquieted? and why is thine understanding troubled, and the thoughts of thine heart?
Et je dis : Parce que tu m'as abandonné ; et pourtant j'ai agi selon tes paroles, je suis allé dans le champ, et voici, j'ai vu, et je vois encore, ce que je ne puis exprimer.
And I said, Because thou hast forsaken me, and yet I did according to thy words, and I went into the field, and, lo, I have seen, and yet see, that I am not able to express.
Et il me dit : Tiens-toi debout avec courage, et je te conseillerai.
And he said unto me, Stand up manfully, and I will advise thee.
Alors je dis : Parle, mon seigneur, en moi ; seulement ne m'abandonne pas, de peur que je ne meure frustré de mon espérance.
Then said I, Speak on, my lord, in me; only forsake me not, lest I die frustrate of my hope.
Car j'ai vu ce que je ne connaissais pas, et j'entends ce que je ne sais pas.
For I have seen that I knew not, and hear that I do not know.
Ou bien mon sens est-il trompé, ou mon âme est-elle dans un rêve ?
Or is my sense deceived, or my soul in a dream?
Maintenant donc, je te prie d'expliquer à ton serviteur cette vision.
Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this vision.
Il me répondit alors et dit : Écoute-moi, et je t'instruirai, et je te dirai pourquoi tu as peur ; car le Très-Haut te révélera beaucoup de choses secrètes.
He answered me then, and said, Hear me, and I shall inform thee, and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid: for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee.
Il a vu que ta voie est droite, car tu t'affliges continuellement pour ton peuple, et tu mènes une grande lamentation pour Sion.
He hath seen that thy way is right: for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people, and makest great lamentation for Sion.
Voici donc la signification de la vision que tu as vue dernièrement :
This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest:
Tu as vu une femme en deuil, et tu as commencé à la consoler :
Thou sawest a woman mourning, and thou begannest to comfort her:
Mais maintenant tu ne vois plus la ressemblance de la femme, mais une ville bâtie t'est apparue.
But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more, but there appeared unto thee a city builded.

And whereas she told thee of the death of her son, this is the solution:
Cette femme que tu as vue est Sion ; et quant à ce qu'elle t'a dit, elle que tu vois comme une ville bâtie,
This woman, whom thou sawest is Sion: and whereas she said unto thee, even she whom thou seest as a city builded,
Quant à ce qu'elle t'a dit, dis-je, qu'elle a été stérile pendant trente ans, ce sont les trente années où aucune offrande n'a été faite en elle.
Whereas, I say, she said unto thee, that she hath been thirty years barren: those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her.
Mais après trente ans, Salomon bâtit la ville et offrit des offrandes ; et alors la stérile enfanta un fils.
But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings: and then bare the barren a son.
Et quant à ce qu'elle t'a dit qu'elle l'avait nourri avec labeur, c'était l'habitation à Jérusalem.
And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour: that was the dwelling in Jerusalem.
Mais quant à ce qu'elle t'a dit : Mon fils, entrant dans sa chambre nuptiale, a fait une chute et est mort ; c'était la destruction qui est arrivée à Jérusalem.
But whereas she said unto thee, That my son coming into his marriage chamber happened to have a fail, and died: this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem.
Et voici, tu as vu sa ressemblance, et parce qu'elle pleurait son fils, tu as commencé à la consoler ; et de ces choses qui sont arrivées, celles-ci doivent t'être révélées.
And, behold, thou sawest her likeness, and because she mourned for her son, thou begannest to comfort her: and of these things which have chanced, these are to be opened unto thee.
Car maintenant le Très-Haut voit que tu es affligé sans feinte, et que tu souffres de tout ton cœur pour elle, c'est pourquoi il t'a montré l'éclat de sa gloire et la grâce de sa beauté :
For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly, and sufferest from thy whole heart for her, so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory, and the comeliness of her beauty:
Et c'est pourquoi je t'ai dit de rester dans le champ où aucune maison n'était bâtie :
And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded:
Car je savais que le Très-Haut te montrerait cela.
For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee.
C'est pourquoi je t'ai ordonné d'aller dans le champ où il n'y avait aucun fondement de bâtiment.
Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field, where no foundation of any building was.
Car dans le lieu où le Très-Haut commence à montrer sa ville, aucun bâtiment d'homme ne peut subsister.
For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city, there can no man’s building be able to stand.
C'est pourquoi ne crains point, et que ton cœur ne s'effraie pas, mais entre et vois la beauté et la grandeur de l'édifice, autant que tes yeux pourront le voir :
And therefore fear not, let not thine heart be affrighted, but go thy way in, and see the beauty and greatness of the building, as much as thine eyes be able to see:
Et alors tu entendras autant que tes oreilles pourront comprendre.
And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend.
Car tu es béni au-dessus de beaucoup d'autres, et tu es appelé auprès du Très-Haut, ce qui n'arrive qu'à peu de gens.
For thou art blessed above many other, and art called with the Highest; and so are but few.
Mais demain soir, tu resteras ici ;
But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here;
Et ainsi le Très-Haut te montrera des visions des choses élevées que le Très-Haut fera à ceux qui habitent sur la terre dans les derniers jours. Ainsi je dormis cette nuit-là et la suivante, comme il me l'avait ordonné.
And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the high things, which the most High will do unto them that dwell upon the earth in the last days. So I slept that night and another, like as he commanded me.
Alors je vis un songe, et voici, il monta de la mer un aigle qui avait douze ailes emplumées et trois têtes.
Then saw I a dream, and, behold, there came up from the sea an eagle, which had twelve feathered wings, and three heads.
Et je vis, et voici, il étendit ses ailes sur toute la terre, et tous les vents de l'air soufflèrent sur lui et se rassemblèrent.
And I saw, and, behold, she spread her wings over all the earth, and all the winds of the air blew on her, and were gathered together.
Et je regardai, et de ses plumes il en crût d'autres contraires, et elles devinrent des petites plumes et menues.
And I beheld, and out of her feathers there grew other contrary feathers; and they became little feathers and small.
Mais ses têtes étaient au repos ; la tête du milieu était plus grande que les autres, pourtant elle reposait avec les autres.
But her heads were at rest: the head in the midst was greater than the other, yet rested it with the residue.
De plus, je regardai, et voici, l'aigle volait avec ses plumes, et régnait sur la terre et sur ceux qui l'habitent.
Moreover I beheld, and, lo, the eagle flew with her feathers, and reigned upon earth, and over them that dwelt therein.
Et je vis que toutes les choses sous le ciel lui étaient soumises, et nul homme ne parlait contre lui, non, pas une seule créature sur la terre.
And I saw that all things under heaven were subject unto her, and no man spake against her, no, not one creature upon earth.
Et je regardai, et voici, l'aigle se dressa sur ses serres et parla à ses plumes, disant :
And I beheld, and, lo, the eagle rose upon her talons, and spake to her feathers, saying,
Ne veillez pas toutes à la fois ; dormez chacune à sa place, et veillez à tour de rôle :
Watch not all at once: sleep every one in his own place, and watch by course:
Mais que les têtes soient gardées pour la fin.
But let the heads be preserved for the last.
Et je regardai, et voici, la voix ne sortait pas de ses têtes, mais du milieu de son corps.
And I beheld, and, lo, the voice went not out of her heads, but from the midst of her body.
Et je comptai ses plumes contraires, et voici, il y en avait huit.
And I numbered her contrary feathers, and, behold, there were eight of them.
Et je regardai, et voici, du côté droit il s'éleva une plume, et elle régna sur toute la terre ;
And I looked, and, behold, on the right side there arose one feather, and reigned over all the earth;
Et il arriva que, lorsqu'elle régnait, sa fin vint, et sa place ne parut plus ; alors la suivante se leva et régna, et elle eut un long temps ;
And so it was, that when it reigned, the end of it came, and the place thereof appeared no more: so the next following stood up. and reigned, and had a great time;
Et il arriva que, lorsqu'elle régnait, sa fin vint aussi, comme la première, de sorte qu'elle ne parut plus.
And it happened, that when it reigned, the end of it came also, like as the first, so that it appeared no more.
Alors une voix vint à elle, disant :
Then came there a voice unto it, and said,
Écoute, toi qui as dominé sur la terre si longtemps : voici ce que je te dis, avant que tu ne commences à ne plus paraître,
Hear thou that hast borne rule over the earth so long: this I say unto thee, before thou beginnest to appear no more,
Nul après toi n'atteindra ton temps, ni même la moitié de celui-ci.
There shall none after thee attain unto thy time, neither unto the half thereof.
Alors s'éleva la troisième, et elle régna comme les autres auparavant, et elle aussi ne parut plus.
Then arose the third, and reigned as the other before, and appeared no more also.
Ainsi en fut-il de tout le reste, l'une après l'autre, de sorte que chacune régna, puis ne parut plus.
So went it with all the residue one after another, as that every one reigned, and then appeared no more.
Alors je regardai, et voici, avec le temps, les plumes qui suivaient se levèrent du côté droit pour régner aussi ; et quelques-unes d'entre elles régnèrent, mais au bout de peu de temps elles ne parurent plus :
Then I beheld, and, lo, in process of time the feathers that followed stood up upon the right side, that they might rule also; and some of them ruled, but within a while they appeared no more:
Car certaines d'entre elles furent établies, mais ne régnèrent point.
For some of them were set up, but ruled not.
Après cela je regardai, et voici, les douze plumes ne parurent plus, ni les deux petites plumes :
After this I looked, and, behold, the twelve feathers appeared no more, nor the two little feathers:
Et il n'y avait plus rien sur le corps de l'aigle, sinon trois têtes qui reposaient, et six petites ailes.
And there was no more upon the eagle’s body, but three heads that rested, and six little wings.
Alors je vis aussi que deux petites plumes se séparèrent des six, et restèrent sous la tête qui était du côté droit ; car les quatre autres demeurèrent à leur place.
Then saw I also that two little feathers divided themselves from the six, and remained under the head that was upon the right side: for the four continued in their place.
Et je regardai, et voici, les plumes qui étaient sous l'aile pensèrent à s'établir et à avoir la domination.
And I beheld, and, lo, the feathers that were under the wing thought to set up themselves and to have the rule.
Et je regardai, et voici, l'une fut établie, mais peu après elle ne parut plus.
And I beheld, and, lo, there was one set up, but shortly it appeared no more.
Et la seconde disparut plus tôt que la première.
And the second was sooner away than the first.
Et je regardai, et voici, les deux qui restaient pensèrent aussi en elles-mêmes à régner :
And I beheld, and, lo, the two that remained thought also in themselves to reign:
Et pendant qu'elles y pensaient, voici, l'une des têtes qui étaient au repos s'éveilla, à savoir celle qui était au milieu ; car elle était plus grande que les deux autres têtes.
And when they so thought, behold, there awaked one of the heads that were at rest, namely, it that was in the midst; for that was greater than the two other heads.
Et alors je vis que les deux autres têtes se joignirent à elle.
And then I saw that the two other heads were joined with it.
Et voici, la tête se tourna avec celles qui étaient avec elle, et dévora les deux plumes sous l'aile qui auraient voulu régner.
And, behold, the head was turned with them that were with it, and did eat up the two feathers under the wing that would have reigned.
Mais cette tête mit toute la terre dans la crainte, et y exerça sa domination sur tous ceux qui habitent la terre avec une grande oppression ; et elle eut le gouvernement du monde plus que toutes les ailes qui avaient été.
But this head put the whole earth in fear, and bare rule in it over all those that dwelt upon the earth with much oppression; and it had the governance of the world more than all the wings that had been.
Et après cela je regardai, et voici, la tête qui était au milieu ne parut plus soudainement, tout comme les ailes.
And after this I beheld, and, lo, the head that was in the midst suddenly appeared no more, like as the wings.
Mais il resta les deux têtes, qui régnèrent aussi de la même manière sur la terre et sur ceux qui l'habitent.
But there remained the two heads, which also in like sort ruled upon the earth, and over those that dwelt therein.
Et je regardai, et voici, la tête du côté droit dévora celle qui était du côté gauche.
And I beheld, and, lo, the head upon the right side devoured it that was upon the left side.
Alors j'entendis une voix qui me dit : Regarde devant toi, et considère la chose que tu vois.
Then I head a voice, which said unto me, Look before thee, and consider the thing that thou seest.
Et je regardai, et voici, c'était comme un lion rugissant chassé de la forêt ; et je vis qu'il fit sortir une voix d'homme vers l'aigle, et dit :
And I beheld, and lo, as it were a roaring lion chased out of the wood: and I saw that he sent out a man’s voice unto the eagle, and said,
Écoute, je vais te parler, et le Très-Haut te dira :
Hear thou, I will talk with thee, and the Highest shall say unto thee,
N'es-tu pas celui qui reste des quatre bêtes que j'ai fait régner dans mon monde, afin que la fin de leurs temps vienne par elles ?
Art not thou it that remainest of the four beasts, whom I made to reign in my world, that the end of their times might come through them?
Et la quatrième est venue, et a vaincu toutes les bêtes qui étaient passées, et a eu pouvoir sur le monde avec une grande terreur, et sur toute l'étendue de la terre avec une méchante oppression ; et pendant si longtemps elle a habité sur la terre avec tromperie.
And the fourth came, and overcame all the beasts that were past, and had power over the world with great fearfulness, and over the whole compass of the earth with much wicked oppression; and so long time dwelt he upon the earth with deceit.
Car tu n'as pas jugé la terre avec vérité.
For the earth hast thou not judged with truth.
Car tu as affligé les humbles, tu as blessé les paisibles, tu as aimé les menteurs, et tu as détruit les demeures de ceux qui portaient du fruit, et tu as renversé les murs de ceux qui ne te faisaient aucun mal.
For thou hast afflicted the meek, thou hast hurt the peaceable, thou hast loved liars, and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit, and hast cast down the walls of such as did thee no harm.
C'est pourquoi ton injustice est montée jusqu'au Très-Haut, et ton orgueil jusqu'au Puissant.
Therefore is thy wrongful dealing come up unto the Highest, and thy pride unto the Mighty.
Le Très-Haut a aussi regardé les temps orgueilleux, et voici, ils sont finis, et ses abominations sont accomplies.
The Highest also hath looked upon the proud times, and, behold, they are ended, and his abominations are fulfilled.
C'est pourquoi ne parais plus, toi aigle, ni tes ailes horribles, ni tes méchantes plumes, ni tes têtes malicieuses, ni tes serres nuisibles, ni tout ton corps vain :
And therefore appear no more, thou eagle, nor thy horrible wings, nor thy wicked feathers nor thy malicious heads, nor thy hurtful claws, nor all thy vain body:
Afin que toute la terre soit rafraîchie et puisse revenir, étant délivrée de ta violence, et qu'elle puisse espérer le jugement et la miséricorde de celui qui l'a faite.
That all the earth may be refreshed, and may return, being delivered from thy violence, and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her.
Et il arriva, pendant que le lion disait ces paroles à l'aigle, que je vis,
And it came to pass, whiles the lion spake these words unto the eagle, I saw,
Et voici, la tête qui restait et les quatre ailes ne parurent plus, et les deux autres allèrent vers elle et s'établirent pour régner, et leur royaume était petit et plein de tumulte.
And, behold, the head that remained and the four wings appeared no more, and the two went unto it and set themselves up to reign, and their kingdom was small, and fill of uproar.
Et je vis, et voici, elles ne parurent plus, et tout le corps de l'aigle fut brûlé, de sorte que la terre fut dans une grande crainte ; alors je m'éveillai du trouble et de l'extase de mon esprit, et d'une grande peur, et je dis à mon esprit :
And I saw, and, behold, they appeared no more, and the whole body of the eagle was burnt so that the earth was in great fear: then awaked I out of the trouble and trance of my mind, and from great fear, and said unto my spirit,
Voici, c'est toi qui m'as fait cela, en ce que tu recherches les voies du Très-Haut.
Lo, this hast thou done unto me, in that thou searchest out the ways of the Highest.
Voici, je suis encore las en mon esprit, et très faible en mon âme ; et il y a peu de force en moi, à cause de la grande peur dont j'ai été affligé cette nuit.
Lo, yet am I weary in my mind, and very weak in my spirit; and little strength is there in me, for the great fear wherewith I was afflicted this night.
C'est pourquoi je supplierai maintenant le Très-Haut de me consoler jusqu'à la fin.
Therefore will I now beseech the Highest, that he will comfort me unto the end.
Et je dis : Seigneur souverain, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et si je suis justifié devant toi plus que beaucoup d'autres, et si ma prière est en effet montée devant ta face ;
And I said, Lord that bearest rule, if I have found grace before thy sight, and if I am justified with thee before many others, and if my prayer indeed be come up before thy face;
Console-moi donc, et montre à ton serviteur l'interprétation et la distinction claire de cette vision effrayante, afin que tu consoles parfaitement mon âme.
Comfort me then, and shew me thy servant the interpretation and plain difference of this fearful vision, that thou mayest perfectly comfort my soul.
Car tu m'as jugé digne de me montrer les derniers temps.
For thou hast judged me worthy to shew me the last times.
Et il me dit : Voici l'interprétation de la vision :
And he said unto me, This is the interpretation of the vision:
L'aigle que tu as vu monter de la mer est le royaume qui fut vu dans la vision de ton frère Daniel.
The eagle, whom thou sawest come up from the sea, is the kingdom which was seen in the vision of thy brother Daniel.
Mais cela ne lui fut pas expliqué, c'est pourquoi je te le déclare maintenant.
But it was not expounded unto him, therefore now I declare it unto thee.
Voici, les jours viendront où il s'élèvera un royaume sur la terre, et il sera craint plus que tous les royaumes qui l'ont précédé.
Behold, the days will come, that there shall rise up a kingdom upon earth, and it shall be feared above all the kingdoms that were before it.
Dans ce même royaume, douze rois régneront l'un après l'autre :
In the same shall twelve kings reign, one after another:
Dont le second commencera à régner, et aura plus de temps que n'importe lequel des douze.
Whereof the second shall begin to reign, and shall have more time than any of the twelve.
Et c'est ce que signifient les douze ailes que tu as vues.
And this do the twelve wings signify, which thou sawest.
Quant à la voix que tu as entendue parler, et que tu as vue sortir non des têtes mais du milieu de son corps, en voici l'interprétation :
As for the voice which thou heardest speak, and that thou sawest not to go out from the heads but from the midst of the body thereof, this is the interpretation:
Qu'après le temps de ce royaume, il s'élèvera de grandes luttes, et il sera en péril de tomber ; néanmoins il ne tombera pas alors, mais sera rétabli dans son commencement.
That after the time of that kingdom there shall arise great strivings, and it shall stand in peril of failing: nevertheless it shall not then fall, but shall be restored again to his beginning.
Et quant aux huit petites plumes que tu as vues attachées à ses ailes, en voici l'interprétation :
And whereas thou sawest the eight small under feathers sticking to her wings, this is the interpretation:
Qu'en lui s'élèveront huit rois, dont les temps seront courts et les années rapides.
That in him there shall arise eight kings, whose times shall be but small, and their years swift.
Et deux d'entre eux périront à l'approche du temps du milieu ; quatre seront gardés jusqu'à ce que leur fin commence à approcher ; mais deux seront gardés jusqu'à la fin.
And two of them shall perish, the middle time approaching: four shall be kept until their end begin to approach: but two shall be kept unto the end.
Et quant aux trois têtes que tu as vues au repos, en voici l'interprétation :
And whereas thou sawest three heads resting, this is the interpretation:
Dans ses derniers jours, le Très-Haut suscitera trois royaumes, et y renouvellera beaucoup de choses, et ils auront la domination de la terre,
In his last days shall the most High raise up three kingdoms, and renew many things therein, and they shall have the dominion of the earth,
Et de ceux qui l'habitent, avec une grande oppression, au-dessus de tous ceux qui les ont précédés ; c'est pourquoi ils sont appelés les têtes de l'aigle.
And of those that dwell therein, with much oppression, above all those that were before them: therefore are they called the heads of the eagle.
Car ce sont eux qui accompliront sa méchanceté et qui achèveront sa fin dernière.
For these are they that shall accomplish his wickedness, and that shall finish his last end.
Et en ce que tu as vu que la grande tête ne paraissait plus, cela signifie que l'un d'eux mourra sur son lit, et pourtant avec douleur.
And whereas thou sawest that the great head appeared no more, it signifieth that one of them shall die upon his bed, and yet with pain.
Car les deux qui restent seront mis à mort par l'épée.
For the two that remain shall be slain with the sword.
Car l'épée de l'un dévorera l'autre ; mais à la fin, il tombera lui-même par l'épée.
For the sword of the one shall devour the other: but at the last shall he fall through the sword himself.
Et en ce que tu as vu deux plumes sous les ailes passer sur la tête qui est du côté droit ;
And whereas thou sawest two feathers under the wings passing over the head that is on the right side;
Cela signifie que ce sont ceux que le Très-Haut a gardés jusqu'à leur fin : c'est le petit royaume et plein de trouble, tel que tu l'as vu.
It signifieth that these are they, whom the Highest hath kept unto their end: this is the small kingdom and full of trouble, as thou sawest.
Et le lion que tu as vu s'élever de la forêt, rugissant et parlant à l'aigle, et lui reprochant son injustice par toutes les paroles que tu as entendues ;
And the lion, whom thou sawest rising up out of the wood, and roaring, and speaking to the eagle, and rebuking her for her unrighteousness with all the words which thou hast heard;
C'est ici l'Oint que le Très-Haut a gardé pour eux et pour leur méchanceté jusqu'à la fin ; il les reprendra et leur reprochera leur cruauté.
This is the anointed, which the Highest hath kept for them and for their wickedness unto the end: he shall reprove them, and shall upbraid them with their cruelty.
Car il les fera comparaître vivants devant lui en jugement, il les réprimandera et les corrigera.
For he shall set them before him alive in judgment, and shall rebuke them, and correct them.
Car il délivrera avec miséricorde le reste de mon peuple, ceux qui ont été pressés sur mes frontières, et il les réjouira jusqu'à la venue du jour du jugement, dont je t'ai parlé dès le commencement.
For the rest of my people shall he deliver with mercy, those that have been pressed upon my borders, and he shall make them joyful until the coming of the day of judgment, whereof I have spoken unto thee from the the beginning.
C'est ici le songe que tu as vu, et en voici les interprétations.
This is the dream that thou sawest, and these are the interpretations.
Toi seul as été jugé digne de connaître ce secret du Très-Haut.
Thou only hast been meet to know this secret of the Highest.
Écris donc dans un livre toutes ces choses que tu as vues, et cache-les ;
Therefore write all these things that thou hast seen in a book, and hide them:
Et enseigne-les aux sages du peuple, dont tu sais que les cœurs peuvent comprendre et garder ces secrets.
And teach them to the wise of the people, whose hearts thou knowest may comprehend and keep these secrets.
Mais attends ici toi-même encore sept jours, afin qu'il te soit montré tout ce qu'il plaira au Très-Haut de te déclarer. Et sur ce, il s'en alla.
But wait thou here thyself yet seven days more, that it may be shewed thee, whatsoever it pleaseth the Highest to declare unto thee. And with that he went his way.
Et il arriva que, lorsque tout le peuple vit que les sept jours étaient passés et que je n'étais pas revenu dans la ville, ils s'assemblèrent tous, depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, et vinrent à moi, disant :
And it came to pass, when all the people saw that the seven days were past, and I not come again into the city, they gathered them all together, from the least unto the greatest, and came unto me, and said,
En quoi t'avons-nous offensé, et quel mal t'avons-nous fait, pour que tu nous abandonnes et que tu restes assis ici en ce lieu ?
What have we offended thee? and what evil have we done against thee, that thou forsakest us, and sittest here in this place?
Car de tous les prophètes, toi seul nous restes, comme une grappe de la vendange, et comme une lampe dans un lieu obscur, et comme un port ou un navire préservé de la tempête.
For of all the prophets thou only art left us, as a cluster of the vintage, and as a candle in a dark place, and as a haven or ship preserved from the tempest.
Les maux qui nous sont arrivés ne sont-ils pas suffisants ?
Are not the evils which are come to us sufficient?
Si tu nous abandonnes, combien n'eût-il pas mieux valu pour nous que nous eussions été aussi brûlés au milieu de Sion ?
If thou shalt forsake us, how much better had it been for us, if we also had been burned in the midst of Sion?
Car nous ne valons pas mieux que ceux qui y sont morts. Et ils pleurèrent à haute voix. Alors je leur répondis et dis :
For we are not better than they that died there. And they wept with a loud voice. Then answered I them, and said,
Prends courage, ô Israël ; et ne sois pas dans la tristesse, maison de Jacob ;
Be of good comfort, O Israel; and be not heavy, thou house of Jacob:
Car le Très-Haut se souvient de vous, et le Puissant ne vous a pas oubliés dans l'épreuve.
For the Highest hath you in remembrance, and the Mighty hath not forgotten you in temptation.
Quant à moi, je ne vous ai point abandonnés, et je ne me suis point éloigné de vous ; mais je suis venu en ce lieu pour prier sur la désolation de Sion, et pour implorer miséricorde pour l'abaissement de votre sanctuaire.
As for me, I have not forsaken you, neither am I departed from you: but am come into this place, to pray for the desolation of Sion, and that I might seek mercy for the low estate of your sanctuary.
Et maintenant, retournez chacun chez vous, et après ces jours, je viendrai à vous.
And now go your way home every man, and after these days will I come unto you.
Ainsi le peuple s'en alla dans la ville, comme je le lui avais ordonné ;
So the people went their way into the city, like as I commanded them:
Mais je restai encore dans le champ sept jours, comme l'ange me l'avait commandé ; et je ne mangeai en ces jours-là que des fleurs du champ, et ma nourriture fut des herbes.
But I remained still in the field seven days, as the angel commanded me; and did eat only in those days of the flowers of the field, and had my meat of the herbs
Et il arriva qu'après sept jours, je fis un songe pendant la nuit :
And it came to pass after seven days, I dreamed a dream by night:
Et voici qu'un vent s'éleva de la mer, qui en agitait toutes les ondes.
And, lo, there arose a wind from the sea, that it moved all the waves thereof.
Et je regardai, et voici que cet homme devenait fort avec les milliers du ciel ; et lorsqu'il tournait son visage pour regarder, tout ce qui apparaissait sous lui tremblait.
And I beheld, and, lo, that man waxed strong with the thousands of heaven: and when he turned his countenance to look, all the things trembled that were seen under him.
Et toutes les fois que la voix sortait de sa bouche, tous ceux qui entendaient sa voix brûlaient, comme la terre se dissout lorsqu'elle sent le feu.
And whensoever the voice went out of his mouth, all they burned that heard his voice, like as the earth faileth when it feeleth the fire.
Et après cela je regardai, et voici qu'une multitude d'hommes sans nombre s'était rassemblée des quatre vents du ciel pour soumettre l'homme qui était sorti de la mer.
And after this I beheld, and, lo, there was gathered together a multitude of men, out of number, from the four winds of the heaven, to subdue the man that came out of the sea
Mais je regardai, et voici qu'il s'était taillé une grande montagne, et il s'envola sur elle.
But I beheld, and, lo, he had graved himself a great mountain, and flew up upon it.
Mais je voulus voir la région ou le lieu d'où la montagne avait été taillée, et je ne le pus.
But I would have seen the region or place whereout the hill was graven, and I could not.
Et après cela je regardai, et voici que tous ceux qui s'étaient rassemblés pour le soumettre étaient saisis d'une grande crainte, et pourtant ils osèrent combattre.
And after this I beheld, and, lo, all they which were gathered together to subdue him were sore afraid, and yet durst fight.
Et voici, lorsqu'il vit la violence de la multitude qui venait, il ne leva point la main, et ne tint ni épée, ni aucun instrument de guerre ;
And, lo, as he saw the violence of the multitude that came, he neither lifted up his hand, nor held sword, nor any instrument of war:
Mais je vis seulement qu'il envoyait de sa bouche comme un souffle de feu, et de ses lèvres un souffle flamboyant, et de sa langue il jetait des étincelles et des tempêtes.
But only I saw that he sent out of his mouth as it had been a blast of fire, and out of his lips a flaming breath, and out of his tongue he cast out sparks and tempests.
Et ils se mêlèrent tous ensemble : le souffle de feu, le souffle flamboyant et la grande tempête ; et ils tombèrent avec violence sur la multitude qui était prête à combattre, et les brûlèrent tous, de sorte que soudain, d'une multitude innombrable, on ne percevait plus rien, sinon de la poussière et une odeur de fumée ; quand je vis cela, je fus effrayé.
And they were all mixed together; the blast of fire, the flaming breath, and the great tempest; and fell with violence upon the multitude which was prepared to fight, and burned them up every one, so that upon a sudden of an innumerable multitude nothing was to be perceived, but only dust and smell of smoke: when I saw this I was afraid.
Ensuite je vis le même homme descendre de la montagne, et appeler à lui une autre multitude paisible.
Afterward saw I the same man come down from the mountain, and call unto him another peaceable Multitude.
Et beaucoup de gens vinrent à lui, dont les uns étaient joyeux, les autres tristes, et certains d'entre eux étaient enchaînés, et d'autres apportaient de ceux qui étaient offerts ; alors je fus malade d'une grande peur, et je m'éveillai, et dis :
And there came much people unto him, whereof some were glad, some were sorry, and some of them were bound, and other some brought of them that were offered: then was I sick through great fear, and I awaked, and said,
Tu as montré à ton serviteur ces merveilles dès le commencement, et tu m'as jugé digne que tu reçoives ma prière ;
Thou hast shewed thy servant these wonders from the beginning, and hast counted me worthy that thou shouldest receive my prayer:
Montre-moi maintenant encore l'interprétation de ce songe.
Shew me now yet the interpretation of this dream.
Car, selon ce que je conçois dans mon intelligence, malheur à ceux qui seront laissés en ces jours-là, et bien plus grand malheur à ceux qui ne seront pas laissés !
For as I conceive in mine understanding, woe unto them that shall be left in those days and much more woe unto them that are not left behind!
Car ceux qui n'ont pas été laissés étaient dans la tristesse.
For they that were not left were in heaviness.
Maintenant je comprends les choses qui sont réservées pour les derniers jours, ce qui leur arrivera, et à ceux qui sont laissés.
Now understand I the things that are laid up in the latter days, which shall happen unto them, and to those that are left behind.
C'est pourquoi ils sont tombés dans de grands périls et de nombreuses nécessités, comme ces songes le déclarent.
Therefore are they come into great perils and many necessities, like as these dreams declare.
Pourtant, il est plus facile à celui qui est en danger de tomber dans ces choses, que de passer comme une nuée hors du monde, et de ne pas voir les choses qui arrivent dans les derniers jours. Et il me répondit et dit :
Yet is it easier for him that is in danger to come into these things, than to pass away as a cloud out of the world, and not to see the things that happen in the last days. And he answered unto me, and said,
Je te montrerai l'interprétation de la vision, et je t'ouvrirai la chose que tu as demandée.
The interpretation of the vision shall I shew thee, and I will open unto thee the thing that thou hast required.
Quant à ce que tu as parlé de ceux qui sont laissés, voici l'interprétation :
Whereas thou hast spoken of them that are left behind, this is the interpretation:
Celui qui endurera le péril en ce temps-là s'est gardé lui-même ; ceux qui sont tombés dans le danger sont ceux qui ont des œuvres et la foi envers le Tout-Puissant.
He that shall endure the peril in that time hath kept himself: they that be fallen into danger are such as have works, and faith toward the Almighty.
Sache donc ceci, que ceux qui sont laissés sont plus bénis que ceux qui sont morts.
Know this therefore, that they which be left behind are more blessed than they that be dead.
Voici la signification de la vision : En ce que tu as vu un homme monter du milieu de la mer :
This is the meaning of the vision: Whereas thou sawest a man coming up from the midst of the sea:
C'est celui que Dieu le Très-Haut a gardé pendant un long temps, qui par lui-même délivrera sa créature ; et il dirigera ceux qui sont laissés.
The same is he whom God the Highest hath kept a great season, which by his own self shall deliver his creature: and he shall order them that are left behind.
Et en ce que tu as vu que de sa bouche sortait comme un souffle de vent, de feu et de tempête ;
And whereas thou sawest, that out of his mouth there came as a blast of wind, and fire, and storm;
Et qu'il ne tenait ni épée, ni aucun instrument de guerre, mais que son impétuosité détruisit toute la multitude qui venait pour le soumettre ; en voici l'interprétation :
And that he held neither sword, nor any instrument of war, but that the rushing in of him destroyed the whole multitude that came to subdue him; this is the interpretation:
Voici, les jours viennent où le Très-Haut commencera à délivrer ceux qui sont sur la terre.
Behold, the days come, when the most High will begin to deliver them that are upon the earth.
Et il viendra à la stupéfaction de ceux qui habitent sur la terre.
And he shall come to the astonishment of them that dwell on the earth.
Et l'on entreprendra de combattre l'un contre l'autre, ville contre ville, lieu contre lieu, peuple contre peuple, et royaume contre royaume.
And one shall undertake to fight against another, one city against another, one place against another, one people against another, and one realm against another.
Et le temps sera venu où ces choses s'accompliront, et les signes arriveront que je t'ai montrés auparavant, et alors mon Fils sera manifesté, lui que tu as vu comme un homme qui montait.
And the time shall be when these things shall come to pass, and the signs shall happen which I shewed thee before, and then shall my Son be declared, whom thou sawest as a man ascending.
Et quand tout le peuple entendra sa voix, chaque homme laissera dans son propre pays la bataille qu'ils ont l'un contre l'autre.
And when all the people hear his voice, every man shall in their own land leave the battle they have one against another.
Et une multitude innombrable se rassemblera, comme tu les as vus, voulant venir et le vaincre en combattant.
And an innumerable multitude shall be gathered together, as thou sawest them, willing to come, and to overcome him by fighting.
Mais il se tiendra sur le sommet de la montagne de Sion.
But he shall stand upon the top of the mount Sion.
Et Sion sera montrée à tous les hommes, préparée et bâtie, comme tu as vu la montagne taillée sans mains.
And Sion shall come, and shall be shewed to all men, being prepared and builded, like as thou sawest the hill graven without hands.
Et mon Fils reprochera leurs méchantes inventions à ces nations qui, à cause de leur vie mauvaise, sont tombées dans la tempête ;
And this my Son shall rebuke the wicked inventions of those nations, which for their wicked life are fallen into the tempest;
Et il mettra devant elles leurs mauvaises pensées, et les tourments par lesquels elles commenceront à être tourmentées, lesquels sont semblables à une flamme ; et il les détruira sans travail par la loi qui est semblable à moi.
And shall lay before them their evil thoughts, and the torments wherewith they shall begin to be tormented, which are like unto a flame: and he shall destroy them without labour by the law which is like unto me.
Et en ce que tu as vu qu'il rassemblait à lui une autre multitude paisible ;
And whereas thou sawest that he gathered another peaceable multitude unto him;
Ce sont les dix tribus qui furent emmenées prisonnières hors de leur propre pays au temps du roi Osée, que Salmanasar, roi d'Assyrie, emmena captif ; il les fit passer au-delà des eaux, et ainsi elles arrivèrent dans un autre pays.
Those are the ten tribes, which were carried away prisoners out of their own land in the time of Osea the king, whom Salmanasar the king of Assyria led away captive, and he carried them over the waters, and so came they into another land.
Mais elles prirent ce conseil entre elles, de quitter la multitude des païens et d'aller dans un pays plus éloigné, où jamais genre humain n'avait habité,
But they took this counsel among themselves, that they would leave the multitude of the heathen, and go forth into a further country, where never mankind dwelt,
Afin qu'elles pussent y garder leurs ordonnances, qu'elles n'avaient jamais gardées dans leur propre pays.
That they might there keep their statutes, which they never kept in their own land.
Et elles entrèrent dans l'Euphrate par les passages étroits du fleuve.
And they entered into Euphrates by the narrow places of the river.
Car le Très-Haut fit alors des signes pour elles, et retint le fleuve jusqu'à ce qu'elles fussent passées.
For the most High then shewed signs for them, and held still the flood, till they were passed over.
Car à travers ce pays il y avait un long chemin à faire, à savoir d'un an et demi ; et cette région s'appelle Arsareth.
For through that country there was a great way to go, namely, of a year and a half: and the same region is called Arsareth.
Alors elles y habitèrent jusqu'au dernier temps ; et maintenant, quand elles commenceront à venir,
Then dwelt they there until the latter time; and now when they shall begin to come,
Le Très-Haut retiendra de nouveau les sources du fleuve, afin qu'elles puissent passer ; c'est pourquoi tu as vu la multitude dans la paix.
The Highest shall stay the springs of the stream again, that they may go through: therefore sawest thou the multitude with peace.
Mais ceux de ton peuple qui sont laissés sont ceux qui se trouvent dans mes frontières.
But those that be left behind of thy people are they that are found within my borders.
Or, lorsqu'il détruira la multitude des nations qui sont rassemblées, il défendra son peuple qui reste.
Now when he destroyeth the multitude of the nations that are gathered together, he shall defend his people that remain.
Et alors il leur montrera de grandes merveilles.
And then shall he shew them great wonders.
Alors je dis : Seigneur Souverain, montre-moi ceci : Pourquoi ai-je vu l'homme monter du milieu de la mer ?
Then said I, O Lord that bearest rule, shew me this: Wherefore have I seen the man coming up from the midst of the sea?
Et il me dit : De même que tu ne peux ni rechercher ni connaître les choses qui sont dans les profondeurs de la mer, de même aucun homme sur la terre ne peut voir mon Fils, ni ceux qui sont avec lui, si ce n'est au temps du jour.
And he said unto me, Like as thou canst neither seek out nor know the things that are in the deep of the sea: even so can no man upon earth see my Son, or those that be with him, but in the day time.
C'est ici l'interprétation du songe que tu as vu, et par lequel toi seul as été ici éclairé.
This is the interpretation of the dream which thou sawest, and whereby thou only art here lightened.
Car tu as abandonné ta propre voie, et tu as appliqué ta diligence à ma loi, et tu l'as recherchée.
For thou hast forsaken thine own way, and applied thy diligence unto my law, and sought it.
Tu as réglé ta vie dans la sagesse, et tu as appelé l'intelligence ta mère.
Thy life hast thou ordered in wisdom, and hast called understanding thy mother.
Et c'est pourquoi je t'ai montré les trésors du Très-Haut ; après trois autres jours, je te dirai d'autres choses, et je te déclarerai des choses puissantes et merveilleuses.
And therefore have I shewed thee the treasures of the Highest: after other three days I will speak other things unto thee, and declare unto thee mighty and wondrous things.
Alors je m'en allai dans le champ, rendant de grandes louanges et des actions de grâces au Très-Haut à cause de ses merveilles qu'il faisait en son temps ;
Then went I forth into the field, giving praise and thanks greatly unto the most High because of his wonders which he did in time;
Et parce qu'il gouverne le temps et les choses qui arrivent en leurs saisons ; et là je restai assis trois jours.
And because he governeth the same, and such things as fall in their seasons: and there I sat three days.
Et il arriva que le troisième jour, j'étais assis sous un chêne, et voici qu'une voix sortit d'un buisson vis-à-vis de moi, et dit : Esdras, Esdras.
And it came to pass upon the third day, I sat under an oak, and, behold, there came a voice out of a bush over against me, and said, Esdras, Esdras.
Et je dis : Me voici, Seigneur. Et je me tins debout sur mes pieds.
And I said, Here am I, Lord And I stood up upon my feet.
Alors il me dit : Dans le buisson, je me suis manifestement révélé à Moïse, et j'ai parlé avec lui, quand mon peuple servait en Égypte ;
Then said he unto me, In the bush I did manifestly reveal myself unto Moses, and talked with him, when my people served in Egypt:
Et je l'ai envoyé, et j'ai fait sortir mon peuple d'Égypte, et je l'ai fait monter sur la montagne où je l'ai gardé près de moi pendant un long temps,
And I sent him and led my people out of Egypt, and brought him up to the mount of where I held him by me a long season,
Et je lui ai dit beaucoup de choses merveilleuses, et je lui ai montré les secrets des temps et la fin ; et je lui ai commandé, disant :
And told him many wondrous things, and shewed him the secrets of the times, and the end; and commanded him, saying,
Tu déclareras ces paroles, et tu cacheras celles-ci.
These words shalt thou declare, and these shalt thou hide.
Et maintenant je te dis :
And now I say unto thee,
Dépose dans ton cœur les signes que je t'ai montrés, et les songes que tu as vus, et les interprétations que tu as entendues ;
That thou lay up in thy heart the signs that I have shewed, and the dreams that thou hast seen, and the interpretations which thou hast heard:
Car tu seras enlevé d'entre tous, et désormais tu resteras avec mon Fils, et avec ceux qui te ressemblent, jusqu'à ce que les temps soient accomplis.
For thou shalt be taken away from all, and from henceforth thou shalt remain with my Son, and with such as be like thee, until the times be ended.
Car le monde a perdu sa jeunesse, et les temps commencent à vieillir.
For the world hath lost his youth, and the times begin to wax old.
Car le monde est divisé en douze parties, et dix parties en sont déjà passées, ainsi que la moitié d'une dixième partie ;
For the world is divided into twelve parts, and the ten parts of it are gone already, and half of a tenth part:
Et il reste ce qui suit la moitié de la dixième partie.
And there remaineth that which is after the half of the tenth part.
Maintenant donc, mets ta maison en ordre, et reprends ton peuple, console ceux d'entre eux qui sont dans le trouble, et renonce maintenant à la corruption ;
Now therefore set thine house in order, and reprove thy people, comfort such of them as be in trouble, and now renounce corruption,
Rejette loin de toi les pensées mortelles, rejette les fardeaux de l'homme, dépouille maintenant la nature faible,
Let go from thee mortal thoughts, cast away the burdens of man, put off now the weak nature,
Et mets de côté les pensées qui te sont les plus pesantes, et hâte-toi de fuir ces temps-ci.
And set aside the thoughts that are most heavy unto thee, and haste thee to flee from these times.
Car des maux encore plus grands que ceux que tu as vus arriver seront commis par la suite.
For yet greater evils than those which thou hast seen happen shall be done hereafter.
Car plus le monde s'affaiblira par la vieillesse, plus les maux augmenteront sur ceux qui l'habitent.
For look how much the world shall be weaker through age, so much the more shall evils increase upon them that dwell therein.
Car le temps s'est éloigné, et le mensonge est proche ; car maintenant la vision que tu as vue se hâte de venir.
For the time is fled far away, and leasing is hard at hand: for now hasteth the vision to come, which thou hast seen.
Alors je répondis devant toi et dis :
Then answered I before thee, and said,
Voici, Seigneur, j'irai, comme tu me l'as commandé, et je reprendrai le peuple qui est présent ; mais ceux qui naîtront après, qui les avertira ? ainsi le monde est plongé dans les ténèbres, et ceux qui l'habitent sont sans lumière.
Behold, Lord, I will go, as thou hast commanded me, and reprove the people which are present: but they that shall be born afterward, who shall admonish them? thus the world is set in darkness, and they that dwell therein are without light.
Car ta loi est brûlée, c'est pourquoi personne ne connaît les choses que tu as faites, ni l'œuvre qui va commencer.
For thy law is burnt, therefore no man knoweth the things that are done of thee, or the work that shall begin.
Mais si j'ai trouvé grâce devant toi, envoie en moi le Saint-Esprit, et j'écrirai tout ce qui a été fait dans le monde depuis le commencement, ce qui était écrit dans ta loi, afin que les hommes puissent trouver ton sentier, et que ceux qui voudront vivre dans les derniers jours puissent vivre.
But if I have found grace before thee, send the Holy Ghost into me, and I shall write all that hath been done in the world since the beginning, which were written in thy law, that men may find thy path, and that they which will live in the latter days may live.
Et il me répondit, disant : Va, rassemble le peuple, et dis-leur qu'ils ne te cherchent point pendant quarante jours.
And he answered me, saying, Go thy way, gather the people together, and say unto them, that they seek thee not for forty days.
Mais prépare-toi beaucoup de tablettes de buis, et prends avec toi Saréas, Dabrias, Sélémias, Écanus et Asiel, ces cinq hommes qui sont prêts à écrire rapidement ;
But look thou prepare thee many box trees, and take with thee Sarea, Dabria, Selemia, Ecanus, and Asiel, these five which are ready to write swiftly;
Et viens ici, et j'allumerai dans ton cœur une lampe d'intelligence qui ne s'éteindra point, jusqu'à ce que soient accomplies les choses que tu commenceras à écrire.
And come hither, and I shall light a candle of understanding in thine heart, which shall not be put out, till the things be performed which thou shalt begin to write.
Et quand tu auras fini, tu publieras certaines choses, et tu en montreras d'autres secrètement aux sages ; demain à cette heure, tu commenceras à écrire.
And when thou hast done, some things shalt thou publish, and some things shalt thou shew secretly to the wise: to morrow this hour shalt thou begin to write.
Alors je sortis, comme il me l'avait commandé, et je rassemblai tout le peuple, et je dis :
Then went I forth, as he commanded, and gathered all the people together, and said,
Écoute ces paroles, ô Israël.
Hear these words, O Israel.
Nos pères, au commencement, étaient étrangers en Égypte, d'où ils furent délivrés ;
Our fathers at the beginning were strangers in Egypt, from whence they were delivered:
Et ils reçurent la loi de vie, qu'ils ne gardèrent pas, et que vous aussi avez transgressée après eux.
And received the law of life, which they kept not, which ye also have transgressed after them.
Alors le pays, le pays même de Sion, vous fut partagé par le sort ; mais vos pères et vous-mêmes avez commis l'injustice, et n'avez pas gardé les voies que le Très-Haut vous avait commandées.
Then was the land, even the land of Sion, parted among you by lot: but your fathers, and ye yourselves, have done unrighteousness, and have not kept the ways which the Highest commanded you.
Et parce qu'il est un juge juste, il vous a ôté en son temps ce qu'il vous avait donné.
And forasmuch as he is a righteous judge, he took from you in time the thing that he had given you.
Et maintenant vous êtes ici, et vos frères sont au milieu de vous.
And now are ye here, and your brethren among you.
Si donc vous soumettez votre propre intelligence et si vous réformez vos cœurs, vous serez gardés en vie, et après la mort vous obtiendrez miséricorde.
Therefore if so be that ye will subdue your own understanding, and reform your hearts, ye shall be kept alive and after death ye shall obtain mercy.
Car après la mort viendra le jugement, quand nous vivrons de nouveau ; et alors les noms des justes seront manifestés, et les œuvres des impies seront déclarées.
For after death shall the judgment come, when we shall live again: and then shall the names of the righteous be manifest, and the works of the ungodly shall be declared.
Que personne donc ne vienne à moi maintenant, et ne me cherche point pendant ces quarante jours.
Let no man therefore come unto me now, nor seek after me these forty days.
Je pris donc les cinq hommes, comme il me l'avait commandé, et nous allâmes dans le champ, et nous y restâmes.
So I took the five men, as he commanded me, and we went into the field, and remained there.
Et le lendemain, voici qu'une voix m'appela, disant : Esdras, ouvre la bouche, et bois ce que je te donne à boire.
And the next day, behold, a voice called me, saying, Esdras, open thy mouth, and drink that I give thee to drink.
Alors j'ouvris la bouche, et voici qu'il me tendit une coupe pleine, qui était comme remplie d'eau, mais dont la couleur était comme du feu.
Then opened I my mouth, and, behold, he reached me a full cup, which was full as it were with water, but the colour of it was like fire.
Et je la pris, et je bus ; et quand j'en eus bu, mon cœur proféra l'intelligence, et la sagesse crût dans mon sein, car mon esprit fortifiait ma mémoire ;
And I took it, and drank: and when I had drunk of it, my heart uttered understanding, and wisdom grew in my breast, for my spirit strengthened my memory:
Et ma bouche fut ouverte, et ne se ferma plus.
And my mouth was opened, and shut no more.
Le Très-Haut donna de l'intelligence aux cinq hommes, et ils écrivirent les visions merveilleuses de la nuit qui leur étaient racontées, et qu'ils ne connaissaient pas ; et ils restèrent assis quarante jours, écrivant pendant le jour, et mangeant du pain pendant la nuit.
The Highest gave understanding unto the five men, and they wrote the wonderful visions of the night that were told, which they knew not: and they sat forty days, and they wrote in the day, and at night they ate bread.
Quant à moi, je parlais pendant le jour, et je ne me taisais point pendant la nuit.
As for me. I spake in the day, and I held not my tongue by night.
En quarante jours, ils écrivirent deux cent quatre livres.
In forty days they wrote two hundred and four books.
Et il arriva que, lorsque les quarante jours furent accomplis, le Très-Haut parla, disant : Publie ouvertement les premiers livres que tu as écrits, afin que les dignes et les indignes puissent les lire ;
And it came to pass, when the forty days were filled, that the Highest spake, saying, The first that thou hast written publish openly, that the worthy and unworthy may read it:
Mais garde les soixante-dix derniers, afin de ne les remettre qu'aux sages d'entre le peuple ;
But keep the seventy last, that thou mayest deliver them only to such as be wise among the people:
Car en eux est la source de l'intelligence, la fontaine de la sagesse et le fleuve de la connaissance.
For in them is the spring of understanding, the fountain of wisdom, and the stream of knowledge.
Et je fis ainsi.
And I did so.
Voici, dis aux oreilles de mon peuple les paroles de la prophétie, que je mettrai dans ta bouche, dit le Seigneur ;
Behold, speak thou in the ears of my people the words of prophecy, which I will put in thy mouth, saith the Lord:
Et fais qu'elles soient écrites sur du papier, car elles sont fidèles et véritables.
And cause them to be written in paper: for they are faithful and true.
Ne crains point les imaginations contre toi, et que l'incrédulité de ceux qui parlent contre toi ne te trouble point.
Fear not the imaginations against thee, let not the incredulity of them trouble thee, that speak against thee.
Car tous les infidèles mourront dans leur infidélité.
For all the unfaithful shall die in their unfaithfulness.
Voici, dit le Seigneur, je ferai venir des fléaux sur le monde : l'épée, la famine, la mort et la destruction.
Behold, saith the Lord, I will bring plagues upon the world; the sword, famine, death, and destruction.
Car la méchanceté a excessivement souillé toute la terre, et leurs œuvres nuisibles sont accomplies.
For wickedness hath exceedingly polluted the whole earth, and their hurtful works are fulfilled.
C'est pourquoi, dit le Seigneur :
Therefore saith the Lord,
Je ne me tairai plus au sujet de leur méchanceté qu'ils commettent profanement, et je ne les tolérerai plus dans ces choses qu'ils pratiquent méchamment ; voici, le sang innocent et juste crie vers moi, et les âmes des justes se plaignent continuellement.
I will hold my tongue no more as touching their wickedness, which they profanely commit, neither will I suffer them in those things, in which they wickedly exercise themselves: behold, the innocent and righteous blood crieth unto me, and the souls of the just complain continually.
Et c'est pourquoi, dit le Seigneur, je les vengerai certainement, et je recueillerai auprès de moi tout le sang innocent d'entre eux.
And therefore, saith the Lord, I will surely avenge them, and receive unto me all the innocent blood from among them.
Voici, mon peuple est mené comme un troupeau à la boucherie ; je ne lui permettrai plus maintenant d'habiter au pays d'Égypte ;
Behold, my people is led as a flock to the slaughter: I will not suffer them now to dwell in the land of Egypt:
Mais je les ferai sortir avec une main puissante et un bras étendu, et je frapperai l'Égypte de fléaux, comme auparavant, et j'en détruirai tout le pays.
But I will bring them with a mighty hand and a stretched out arm, and smite Egypt with plagues, as before, and will destroy all the land thereof.
L'Égypte sera dans le deuil, et ses fondements seront frappés par le fléau et le châtiment que Dieu fera venir sur elle.
Egypt shall mourn, and the foundation of it shall be smitten with the plague and punishment that God shall bring upon it.
Ceux qui labourent la terre seront dans le deuil, car leurs semences périront par la nielle et la grêle, et par une constellation terrible.
They that till the ground shall mourn: for their seeds shall fail through the blasting and hail, and with a fearful constellation.
Malheur au monde et à ceux qui l'habitent !
Woe to the world and them that dwell therein!
Car l'épée et leur destruction approchent, et un peuple se lèvera pour combattre contre un autre, avec des épées à la main.
For the sword and their destruction draweth nigh, and one people shall stand up and fight against another, and swords in their hands.
Car il aura sédition parmi les hommes et ils s'envahiront les uns les autres ; ils ne regarderont ni à leurs rois ni à leurs princes, et le cours de leurs actions dépendra de leur propre pouvoir.
For there shall be sedition among men, and invading one another; they shall not regard their kings nor princes, and the course of their actions shall stand in their power.
Un homme désirera entrer dans une ville, et ne le pourra pas.
A man shall desire to go into a city, and shall not be able.
Car, à cause de leur orgueil, les villes seront troublées, les maisons seront détruites, et les hommes seront dans la crainte.
For because of their pride the cities shall be troubled, the houses shall be destroyed, and men shall be afraid.
Un homme n'aura point de pitié pour son prochain, mais il détruira leurs maisons par l'épée et pillera leurs biens, à cause du manque de pain et pour une grande tribulation.
A man shall have no pity upon his neighbour, but shall destroy their houses with the sword, and spoil their goods, because of the lack of bread, and for great tribulation.
Voici, dit Dieu, je rassemblerai tous les rois de la terre pour me révérer, ceux qui sont du levant du soleil, du midi, de l'orient et du Liban ; pour qu'ils se tournent les uns contre les autres, et rendent ce qu'ils leur ont fait.
Behold, saith God, I will call together all the kings of the earth to reverence me, which are from the rising of the sun, from the south, from the east, and Libanus; to turn themselves one against another, and repay the things that they have done to them.
Comme ils font encore aujourd'hui à mes élus, ainsi ferai-je aussi, et je leur rendrai la pareille dans leur sein. Ainsi dit le Seigneur Dieu :
Like as they do yet this day unto my chosen, so will I do also, and recompense in their bosom. Thus saith the Lord God;
Ma main droite n'épargnera point les pécheurs, et mon épée ne cessera point de frapper ceux qui répandent le sang innocent sur la terre.
My right hand shall not spare the sinners, and my sword shall not cease over them that shed innocent blood upon the earth.
Le feu est sorti de sa fureur, et il a consumé les fondements de la terre, et les pécheurs, comme la paille qui s'allume.
The fire is gone forth from his wrath, and hath consumed the foundations of the earth, and the sinners, like the straw that is kindled.
Malheur à ceux qui pèchent et ne gardent pas mes commandements ! dit le Seigneur.
Woe to them that sin, and keep not my commandments! saith the Lord.
Je ne les épargnerai point ; allez-vous-en, enfants, loin de la puissance, ne souillez pas mon sanctuaire.
I will not spare them: go your way, ye children, from the power, defile not my sanctuary.
Car le Seigneur connaît tous ceux qui pèchent contre lui, et c'est pourquoi il les livre à la mort et à la destruction.
For the Lord knoweth all them that sin against him, and therefore delivereth he them unto death and destruction.
Car maintenant les fléaux sont venus sur toute la terre, et vous y demeurerez ; car Dieu ne vous délivrera pas, parce que vous avez péché contre lui.
For now are the plagues come upon the whole earth and ye shall remain in them: for God shall not deliver you, because ye have sinned against him.
Voici une vision horrible, et son apparition vient de l'orient :
Behold an horrible vision, and the appearance thereof from the east:
Où les nations des dragons d'Arabie sortiront avec beaucoup de chars, et leur multitude sera emportée comme le vent sur la terre, afin que tous ceux qui les entendent craignent et tremblent.
Where the nations of the dragons of Arabia shall come out with many chariots, and the multitude of them shall be carried as the wind upon earth, that all they which hear them may fear and tremble.
Les Carmaniens aussi, furieux de colère, sortiront comme les sangliers de la forêt, et ils viendront avec une grande puissance, et engageront la bataille avec eux, et ravageront une partie du pays des Assyriens.
Also the Carmanians raging in wrath shall go forth as the wild boars of the wood, and with great power shall they come, and join battle with them, and shall waste a portion of the land of the Assyrians.
Et alors les dragons auront le dessus, se souvenant de leur nature ; et s'ils se tournent, conspirant ensemble avec une grande puissance pour les persécuter,
And then shall the dragons have the upper hand, remembering their nature; and if they shall turn themselves, conspiring together in great power to persecute them,
Alors ceux-ci seront troublés, et garderont le silence par leur puissance, et s'enfuiront.
Then these shall be troubled bled, and keep silence through their power, and shall flee.
Et du pays des Assyriens, l'ennemi les assiégera et en consumera certains, et dans leur armée il y aura crainte et effroi, et discorde parmi leurs rois.
And from the land of the Assyrians shall the enemy besiege them, and consume some of them, and in their host shall be fear and dread, and strife among their kings.
Voici des nuées venant de l'orient et du nord jusqu'au midi, et elles sont très horribles à voir, pleines de fureur et de tempête.
Behold clouds from the east and from the north unto the south, and they are very horrible to look upon, full of wrath and storm.
Elles se heurteront l'une contre l'autre, et elles abattront une grande multitude d'étoiles sur la terre, même leur propre étoile ; et le sang montera de l'épée jusqu'au ventre,
They shall smite one upon another, and they shall smite down a great multitude of stars upon the earth, even their own star; and blood shall be from the sword unto the belly,
Et le fumier des hommes jusqu'au jarret du chameau.
And dung of men unto the camel’s hough.
Et il y aura une grande épouvante et un grand tremblement sur la terre ; et ceux qui verront cette fureur seront effrayés, et le tremblement les saisira.
And there shall be great fearfulness and trembling upon earth: and they that see the wrath shall be afraid, and trembling shall come upon them.
Et alors il viendra de grandes tempêtes du midi et du nord, et une autre partie de l'occident.
And then shall there come great storms from the south, and from the north, and another part from the west.
Et des vents impétueux s'élèveront de l'orient et l'ouvriront ; et la nuée qu'il avait élevée dans sa fureur, et l'étoile agitée pour causer la peur vers le vent d'orient et d'occident, seront détruites.
And strong winds shall arise from the east, and shall open it; and the cloud which he raised up in wrath, and the star stirred to cause fear toward the east and west wind, shall be destroyed.
Les grandes et puissantes nuées s'enfleront pleines de fureur, ainsi que l'étoile, afin d'effrayer toute la terre et ceux qui l'habitent ; et elles répandront sur tout lieu haut et éminent une étoile horrible,
The great and mighty clouds shall be puffed up full of wrath, and the star, that they may make all the earth afraid, and them that dwell therein; and they shall pour out over every high and eminent place an horrible star,
Du feu, de la grêle, des épées volantes et beaucoup d'eaux, afin que tous les champs soient remplis, ainsi que tous les fleuves, par l'abondance des grandes eaux.
Fire, and hail, and flying swords, and many waters, that all fields may be full, and all rivers, with the abundance of great waters.
Et elles abattront les villes et les murs, les montagnes et les collines, les arbres de la forêt, l'herbe des prairies et leur blé.
And they shall break down the cities and walls, mountains and hills, trees of the wood, and grass of the meadows, and their corn.
Et elles marcheront résolument vers Babylone, et l'effrayeront.
And they shall go stedfastly unto Babylon, and make her afraid.
Elles viendront à elle et l'assiégeront ; elles répandront sur elle l'étoile et toute la fureur ; alors la poussière et la fumée monteront vers le ciel, et tous ceux qui seront autour d'elle la pleureront.
They shall come to her, and besiege her, the star and all wrath shall they pour out upon her: then shall the dust and smoke go up unto the heaven, and all they that be about her shall bewail her.
Et ceux qui resteront sous elle serviront ceux qui l'auront mise dans la crainte.
And they that remain under her shall do service unto them that have put her in fear.
Et toi, Asie, qui partages l'espérance de Babylone, et qui es la gloire de sa personne :
And thou, Asia, that art partaker of the hope of Babylon, and art the glory of her person:
Malheur à toi, misérable, parce que tu t'es rendue semblable à elle ; et que tu as paré tes filles pour la prostitution, afin qu'elles plaisent à tes amants et se glorifient en eux, lesquels ont toujours désiré se prostituer avec toi.
Woe be unto thee, thou wretch, because thou hast made thyself like unto her; and hast decked thy daughters in whoredom, that they might please and glory in thy lovers, which have always desired to commit whoredom with thee.
Tu as suivi celle qui est haïe dans toutes ses œuvres et ses inventions ; c'est pourquoi, dit Dieu :
Thou hast followed her that is hated in all her works and inventions: therefore saith God,
J'enverrai sur toi des fléaux : le veuvage, la pauvreté, la famine, l'épée et la peste, pour ravager tes maisons par la destruction et la mort.
I will send plagues upon thee; widowhood, poverty, famine, sword, and pestilence, to waste thy houses with destruction and death.
Et la gloire de ta puissance se desséchera comme une fleur, quand s'élèvera la chaleur qui est envoyée sur toi.
And the glory of thy Power shall be dried up as a flower, the heat shall arise that is sent over thee.
Tu seras affaiblie comme une pauvre femme frappée de coups, et comme une personne châtiée par des blessures, de sorte que les puissants et les amants ne pourront plus te recevoir.
Thou shalt be weakened as a poor woman with stripes, and as one chastised with wounds, so that the mighty and lovers shall not be able to receive thee.
Aurais-je ainsi agi contre toi avec jalousie, dit le Seigneur,
Would I with jealousy have so proceeded against thee, saith the Lord,
Si tu n'avais pas toujours tué mes élus, levant tes mains pour frapper, et disant sur leurs morts, quand tu étais ivre :
If thou hadst not always slain my chosen, exalting the stroke of thine hands, and saying over their dead, when thou wast drunken,
Fais paraître la beauté de ton visage ?
Set forth the beauty of thy countenance?
Le salaire de ta prostitution sera dans ton sein, c'est pourquoi tu recevras ta récompense.
The reward of thy whoredom shall be in thy bosom, therefore shalt thou receive recompence.
Comme tu as fait à mes élus, dit le Seigneur, ainsi Dieu te fera, et il te livrera au malheur.
Like as thou hast done unto my chosen, saith the Lord, even so shall God do unto thee, and shall deliver thee into mischief
Tes enfants mourront de faim, et tu tomberas par l'épée ; tes villes seront renversées, et tous les tiens périront par l'épée dans la campagne.
Thy children shall die of hunger, and thou shalt fall through the sword: thy cities shall be broken down, and all thine shall perish with the sword in the field.
Ceux qui seront dans les montagnes mourront de faim, et mangeront leur propre chair, et boiront leur propre sang, par la faim du pain et la soif de l'eau.
They that be in the mountains shall die of hunger, and eat their own flesh, and drink their own blood, for very hunger of bread, and thirst of water.
Toi, malheureuse, tu passeras par la mer, et tu recevras encore des fléaux.
Thou as unhappy shalt come through the sea, and receive plagues again.
Et au passage, ils se jetteront sur la ville oisive, et détruiront une portion de ton pays, et consumeront une partie de ta gloire, et retourneront vers Babylone qui a été détruite.
And in the passage they shall rush on the idle city, and shall destroy some portion of thy land, and consume part of thy glory, and shall return to Babylon that was destroyed.
Et tu seras renversée par eux comme du chaume, et ils seront pour toi comme un feu ;
And thou shalt be cast down by them as stubble, and they shall be unto thee as fire;
Et ils te consumeront, toi et tes villes, ton pays et tes montagnes ; ils brûleront par le feu tous tes bois et tes arbres fertiles.
And shall consume thee, and thy cities, thy land, and thy mountains; all thy woods and thy fruitful trees shall they burn up with fire.
Ils emmèneront tes enfants captifs, et voici, ils pilleront ce que tu possèdes, et gâteront la beauté de ton visage.
Thy children shall they carry away captive, and, look, what thou hast, they shall spoil it, and mar the beauty of thy face.
Malheur à toi, Babylone et Asie ! malheur à toi, Égypte et Syrie !
Woe be unto thee, Babylon, and Asia! woe be unto thee, Egypt and Syria!
Ceignez-vous de sacs et de poils, pleurez sur vos enfants et soyez dans la douleur, car votre destruction est proche.
Gird up yourselves with cloths of sack and hair, bewail your children, and be sorry; for your destruction is at hand.
Une épée est envoyée contre vous, et qui pourra la détourner ?
A sword is sent upon you, and who may turn it back?
Un feu est envoyé parmi vous, et qui pourra l'éteindre ?
A fire is sent among you, and who may quench it?
Des fléaux sont envoyés vers vous, et quel est l'homme qui pourra les chasser ?
Plagues are sent unto you, and what is he that may drive them away?
Quelqu'un peut-il chasser un lion affamé dans la forêt ? ou quelqu'un peut-il éteindre le feu dans le chaume, quand il a commencé à brûler ?
May any man drive away an hungry lion in the wood? or may any one quench the fire in stubble, when it hath begun to burn?
Peut-on faire revenir la flèche qui est lancée par un archer vigoureux ?
May one turn again the arrow that is shot of a strong archer?
Le Seigneur puissant envoie les fléaux, et qui est celui qui peut les chasser ?
The mighty Lord sendeth the plagues and who is he that can drive them away?
Un feu sortira de sa fureur, et qui est celui qui pourra l'éteindre ?
A fire shall go forth from his wrath, and who is he that may quench it?
Il lancera des éclairs, et qui ne craindra pas ? il tonnera, et qui ne sera pas effrayé ?
He shall cast lightnings, and who shall not fear? he shall thunder, and who shall not be afraid?
Le Seigneur menacera, et qui ne sera pas entièrement réduit en poudre devant sa face ?
The Lord shall threaten, and who shall not be utterly beaten to powder at his presence?
La terre tremble, ainsi que ses fondements ; la mer s'élève avec ses vagues depuis l'abîme, et ses ondes sont troublées, ainsi que ses poissons, devant le Seigneur et devant la gloire de sa puissance.
The earth quaketh, and the foundations thereof; the sea ariseth up with waves from the deep, and the waves of it are troubled, and the fishes thereof also, before the Lord, and before the glory of his power:
Car sa main droite qui bande l'arc est forte ; ses flèches qu'il lance sont aiguës, et ne manqueront pas leur but, quand elles commenceront à être lancées jusqu'aux extrémités du monde.
For strong is his right hand that bendeth the bow, his arrows that he shooteth are sharp, and shall not miss, when they begin to be shot into the ends of the world.
Voici, les fléaux sont envoyés, et ils ne reviendront pas, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient venus sur la terre.
Behold, the plagues are sent, and shall not return again, until they come upon the earth.
Le feu est allumé, et il ne s'éteindra point, jusqu'à ce qu'il consume les fondements de la terre.
The fire is kindled, and shall not be put out, till it consume the foundation of the earth.
Comme une flèche lancée par un archer vigoureux ne revient pas en arrière, ainsi les fléaux qui seront envoyés sur la terre ne reviendront pas.
Like as an arrow which is shot of a mighty archer returneth not backward: even so the plagues that shall be sent upon earth shall not return again.
Malheur à moi ! malheur à moi ! qui me délivrera en ces jours-là ?
Woe is me! woe is me! who will deliver me in those days?
Commencement des douleurs et de grands deuils ; commencement de la famine et d'une grande mortalité ; commencement des guerres, et les puissances seront dans la crainte ; commencement des maux ! que ferai-je quand ces maux viendront ?
The beginning of sorrows and great mournings; the beginning of famine and great death; the beginning of wars, and the powers shall stand in fear; the beginning of evils! what shall I do when these evils shall come?
Voici, la famine et le fléau, la tribulation et l'angoisse, sont envoyés comme des fléaux pour l'amendement.
Behold, famine and plague, tribulation and anguish, are sent as scourges for amendment.
Mais malgré toutes ces choses, ils ne se détourneront pas de leur méchanceté, et ne se souviendront pas toujours des fléaux.
But for all these things they shall not turn from their wickedness, nor be always mindful of the scourges.
Voici, les vivres seront à si bon marché sur la terre, qu'ils croiront être en bon état ; et c'est alors que les maux croîtront sur la terre : l'épée, la famine et une grande confusion.
Behold, victuals shall be so good cheap upon earth, that they shall think themselves to be in good case, and even then shall evils grow upon earth, sword, famine, and great confusion.
Car beaucoup de ceux qui habitent sur la terre périront par la famine ; et les autres, qui échapperont à la faim, l'épée les détruira.
For many of them that dwell upon earth shall perish of famine; and the other, that escape the hunger, shall the sword destroy.
Et les morts seront jetés comme du fumier, et il n'y aura personne pour les consoler ; car la terre sera dévastée, et les villes seront renversées.
And the dead shall be cast out as dung, and there shall be no man to comfort them: for the earth shall be wasted, and the cities shall be cast down.
Il ne restera aucun homme pour labourer la terre et pour la semer.
There shall be no man left to till the earth, and to sow it
Les arbres donneront du fruit, et qui les cueillera ?
The trees shall give fruit, and who shall gather them?
Les raisins mûriront, et qui les foulera ? car tous les lieux seront désolés d'hommes ;
The grapes shall ripen, and who shall tread them? for all places shall be desolate of men:
De sorte qu'un homme désirera en voir un autre, et entendre sa voix.
So that one man shall desire to see another, and to hear his voice.
Car d'une ville il en restera dix, et deux des champs, qui se cacheront dans les bois épais et dans les fentes des rochers.
For of a city there shall be ten left, and two of the field, which shall hide themselves in the thick groves, and in the clefts of the rocks.
Comme dans un verger d'oliviers, il reste sur chaque arbre trois ou quatre olives ;
As in an orchard of Olives upon every tree there are left three or four olives;
Ou comme lorsqu'on vendange une vigne, il reste quelques grappes de ceux qui cherchent diligemment à travers la vigne ;
Or as when a vineyard is gathered, there are left some clusters of them that diligently seek through the vineyard:
Ainsi, en ces jours-là, il en restera trois ou quatre à ceux qui fouilleront leurs maisons avec l'épée.
Even so in those days there shall be three or four left by them that search their houses with the sword.
Et la terre sera laissée déserte, et ses champs vieilliront, et ses chemins et tous ses sentiers se rempliront d'épines, parce que personne n'y passera plus.
And the earth shall be laid waste, and the fields thereof shall wax old, and her ways and all her paths shall grow full of thorns, because no man shall travel therethrough.
Les vierges seront dans le deuil, n'ayant point d'époux ; les femmes seront dans le deuil, n'ayant point de maris ; leurs filles seront dans le deuil, n'ayant personne pour les aider.
The virgins shall mourn, having no bridegrooms; the women shall mourn, having no husbands; their daughters shall mourn, having no helpers.
Dans les guerres, leurs époux seront détruits, et leurs maris périront par la famine.
In the wars shall their bridegrooms be destroyed, and their husbands shall perish of famine.
Écoutez maintenant ces choses et comprenez-les, serviteurs du Seigneur.
Hear now these things and understand them, ye servants of the Lord.
Voici la parole du Seigneur, recevez-la ; ne croyez point aux dieux dont le Seigneur a parlé.
Behold, the word of the Lord, receive it: believe not the gods of whom the Lord spake.
Voici, les fléaux approchent, et ils ne tardent pas.
Behold, the plagues draw nigh, and are not slack.
Comme lorsqu'une femme enceinte, au neuvième mois, enfante son fils, deux ou trois heures avant la naissance, de grandes douleurs environnent son sein, lesquelles douleurs, quand l'enfant sort, ne cessent pas un instant ;
As when a woman with child in the ninth month bringeth forth her son, with two or three hours of her birth great pains compass her womb, which pains, when the child cometh forth, they slack not a moment:
Ainsi les fléaux ne tarderont pas à venir sur la terre, et le monde sera dans le deuil, et les douleurs viendront sur lui de toutes parts.
Even so shall not the plagues be slack to come upon the earth, and the world shall mourn, and sorrows shall come upon it on every side.
Ô mon peuple, écoute ma parole : prépare-toi au combat, et dans ces maux sois comme un voyageur sur la terre.
O my people, hear my word: make you ready to thy battle, and in those evils be even as pilgrims upon the earth.
Que celui qui vend soit comme celui qui s'enfuit ; et celui qui achète, comme celui qui va perdre ;
He that selleth, let him be as he that fleeth away: and he that buyeth, as one that will lose:
Celui qui fait le commerce, comme celui qui n'en tire aucun profit ; et celui qui bâtit, comme celui qui n'y habitera pas ;
He that occupieth merchandise, as he that hath no profit by it: and he that buildeth, as he that shall not dwell therein:
Celui qui sème, comme s'il ne devait pas moissonner ; ainsi aussi celui qui plante la vigne, comme s'il ne devait pas en cueillir les raisins ;
He that soweth, as if he should not reap: so also he that planteth the vineyard, as he that shall not gather the grapes:
Ceux qui se marient, comme ceux qui n'auront point d'enfants ; et ceux qui ne se marient pas, comme les veufs.
They that marry, as they that shall get no children; and they that marry not, as the widowers.
C'est pourquoi ceux qui travaillent, travaillent en vain ;
And therefore they that labour labour in vain:
Car des étrangers moissonneront leurs fruits, pilleront leurs biens, renverseront leurs maisons et emmèneront leurs enfants captifs ; car c'est dans la captivité et la famine qu'ils engendreront des enfants.
For strangers shall reap their fruits, and spoil their goods, overthrow their houses, and take their children captives, for in captivity and famine shall they get children.
Et ceux qui font leur commerce par la rapine, plus ils parent leurs villes, leurs maisons, leurs possessions et leurs propres personnes,
And they that occupy their merchandise with robbery, the more they deck their cities, their houses, their possessions, and their own persons:
Plus je serai irrité contre eux à cause de leur péché, dit le Seigneur.
The more will I be angry with them for their sin, saith the Lord.
Comme une prostituée porte envie à une femme honnête et vertueuse,
Like as a whore envieth a right honest and virtuous woman:
Ainsi la justice haïra l'iniquité quand celle-ci se parera, et elle l'accusera en face, quand viendra celui qui doit défendre celui qui recherche diligemment tout péché sur la terre.
So shall righteousness hate iniquity, when she decketh herself, and shall accuse her to her face, when he cometh that shall defend him that diligently searcheth out every sin upon earth.
C'est pourquoi ne lui ressemblez pas, ni à ses œuvres.
And therefore be ye not like thereunto, nor to the works thereof.
Car encore un peu de temps, et l'iniquité sera ôtée de la terre, et la justice régnera parmi vous.
For yet a little, and iniquity shall be taken away out of the earth, and righteousness shall reign among you.
Que le pécheur ne dise pas qu'il n'a point péché ; car Dieu fera brûler des charbons de feu sur la tête de celui qui dit devant le Seigneur Dieu et sa gloire : Je n'ai point péché.
Let not the sinner say that he hath not sinned: for God shall burn coals of fire upon his head, which saith before the Lord God and his glory, I have not sinned.
Voici, le Seigneur connaît toutes les œuvres des hommes, leurs imaginations, leurs pensées et leurs cœurs ;
Behold, the Lord knoweth all the works of men, their imaginations, their thoughts, and their hearts:
Lui qui a dit seulement une parole : Que la terre soit faite, et elle fut faite ; Que le ciel soit fait, et il fut créé.
Which spake but the word, Let the earth be made; and it was made: Let the heaven be made; and it was created.
Par sa parole les étoiles ont été faites, et il en connaît le nombre.
In his word were the stars made, and he knoweth the number of them.
Il sonde l'abîme et ses trésors ; il a mesuré la mer et ce qu'elle contient.
He searcheth the deep, and the treasures thereof; he hath measured the sea, and what it containeth.
Il a enfermé la mer au milieu des eaux, et par sa parole il a suspendu la terre sur les eaux.
He hath shut the sea in the midst of the waters, and with his word hath he hanged the earth upon the waters.
Il étend les cieux comme une voûte ; il les a fondés sur les eaux.
He spreadeth out the heavens like a vault; upon the waters hath he founded it.
Dans le désert, il a fait des sources d'eau et des étangs sur le sommet des montagnes, afin que les fleuves pussent couler des rochers élevés pour arroser la terre.
In the desert hath he made springs of water, and pools upon the tops of the mountains, that the floods might pour down from the high rocks to water the earth.
Il a fait l'homme, et a mis son cœur au milieu du corps, et lui a donné le souffle, la vie et l'intelligence.
He made man, and put his heart in the midst of the body, and gave him breath, life, and understanding.
Oui, et l'Esprit du Dieu Tout-Puissant, qui a fait toutes choses, et qui sonde toutes les choses cachées dans les secrets de la terre,
Yea and the Spirit of Almighty God, which made all things, and searcheth out all hidden things in the secrets of the earth,
Certes, il connaît vos inventions, et ce que vous pensez dans vos cœurs, même ceux qui pèchent et voudraient cacher leur péché.
Surely he knoweth your inventions, and what ye think in your hearts, even them that sin, and would hide their sin.
C'est pourquoi le Seigneur a examiné exactement toutes vos œuvres, et il vous livrera tous à la honte.
Therefore hath the Lord exactly searched out all your works, and he will put you all to shame.
Et quand vos péchés seront mis au jour, vous serez confus devant les hommes, et vos propres péchés seront vos accusateurs en ce jour-là.
And when your sins are brought forth, ye shall be ashamed before men, and your own sins shall be your accusers in that day.
Que ferez-vous ? ou comment cacherez-vous vos péchés devant Dieu et ses anges ?
What will ye do? or how will ye hide your sins before God and his angels?
Voici, Dieu lui-même est le juge, craignez-le ; cessez vos péchés, et oubliez vos iniquités, pour ne plus vous en mêler à jamais ; ainsi Dieu vous conduira et vous délivrera de toute tribulation.
Behold, God himself is the judge, fear him: leave off from your sins, and forget your iniquities, to meddle no more with them for ever: so shall God lead you forth, and deliver you from all trouble.
Car voici, la fureur ardente d'une grande multitude s'est enflammée sur vous, et ils enlèveront certains d'entre vous, et vous nourriront, dans votre oisiveté, de choses offertes aux idoles.
For, behold, the burning wrath of a great multitude is kindled over you, and they shall take away certain of you, and feed you, being idle, with things offered unto idols.
Et ceux qui consentiront à eux seront en dérision et en opprobre, et foulés aux pieds.
And they that consent unto them shall be had in derision and in reproach, and trodden under foot.
Car il aura en tout lieu, et dans les villes voisines, un grand soulèvement contre ceux qui craignent le Seigneur.
For there shall be in every place, and in the next cities, a great insurrection upon those that fear the Lord.
Ils seront comme des insensés, n'épargnant personne, mais pillant et détruisant toujours ceux qui craignent le Seigneur.
They shall be like mad men, sparing none, but still spoiling and destroying those that fear the Lord.
Car ils ravageront et enlèveront leurs biens, et les jetteront hors de leurs maisons.
For they shall waste and take away their goods, and cast them out of their houses.
Alors on connaîtra qui sont mes élus ; et ils seront éprouvés comme l'or dans le feu.
Then shall they be known, who are my chosen; and they shall be tried as the gold in the fire.
Écoutez, ô mes bien-aimés, dit le Seigneur : voici, les jours de tribulation sont proches, mais je vous en délivrerai.
Hear, O ye my beloved, saith the Lord: behold, the days of trouble are at hand, but I will deliver you from the same.
Ne craignez point et ne doutez point, car Dieu est votre guide,
Be ye not afraid neither doubt; for God is your guide,
Et le guide de ceux qui gardent mes commandements et mes préceptes, dit le Seigneur Dieu : que vos péchés ne vous accablent pas, et que vos iniquités ne s'élèvent pas.
And the guide of them who keep my commandments and precepts, saith the Lord God: let not your sins weigh you down, and let not your iniquities lift up themselves.
Malheur à ceux qui sont liés par leurs péchés et couverts de leurs iniquités, comme un champ est couvert de buissons, et dont le sentier est couvert d'épines, de sorte que personne ne peut y passer !
Woe be unto them that are bound with their sins, and covered with their iniquities like as a field is covered over with bushes, and the path thereof covered with thorns, that no man may travel through!
Il est laissé sans culture, et il est jeté au feu pour y être consumé.
It is left undressed, and is cast into the fire to be consumed therewith.
