Les frères juifs qui sont à Jérusalem et dans le pays de Judée, aux frères juifs qui sont en Égypte, salut et paix.
The brethren, the Jews that be at Jerusalem and in the land of Judea, wish unto the brethren, the Jews that are throughout Egypt health and peace:
Que Dieu vous fasse du bien, et qu'il se souvienne de son alliance avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, ses fidèles serviteurs ;
God be gracious unto you, and remember his covenant that he made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, his faithful servants;
Qu'il vous donne à tous un cœur pour l'adorer et pour faire sa volonté avec un grand courage et une âme empressée ;
And give you all an heart to serve him, and to do his will, with a good courage and a willing mind;
Qu'il ouvre votre cœur à sa loi et à ses commandements, et qu'il vous donne la paix,
And open your hearts in his law and commandments, and send you peace,
Qu'il exauce vos prières, qu'il se réconcilie avec vous et ne vous abandonne pas au temps de l'adversité.
And hear your prayers, and be at one with you, and never forsake you in time of trouble.
Et maintenant, nous sommes ici priant pour vous.
And now we be here praying for you.
Sous le règne de Démétrius, en l'an cent soixante-neuf, nous, les Juifs, vous avons écrit dans la détresse extrême qui nous est survenue en ces années-là, depuis que Jason et ses partisans ont trahi la terre sainte et le royaume,
What time as Demetrius reigned, in the hundred threescore and ninth year, we the Jews wrote unto you in the extremity of trouble that came upon us in those years, from the time that Jason and his company revolted from the holy land and kingdom,
Et qu'ils ont brûlé la porte et versé le sang innocent ; alors nous avons prié le Seigneur, et nous avons été exaucés ; nous avons offert des sacrifices et de la fleur de farine, nous avons allumé les lampes et exposé les pains.
And burned the porch, and shed innocent blood: then we prayed unto the Lord, and were heard; we offered also sacrifices and fine flour, and lighted the lamps, and set forth the loaves.
Et maintenant, célébrez la fête des Tabernacles au mois de Casleu.
And now see that ye keep the feast of tabernacles in the month Casleu.
En l'an cent quatre-vingt-huit, le peuple de Jérusalem et de Judée, le conseil des anciens et Judas, saluent et souhaitent santé à Aristobule, maître du roi Ptolémée, issu de la race des prêtres oints, et aux Juifs qui sont en Égypte :
In the hundred fourscore and eighth year, the people that were at Jerusalem and in Judea, and the council, and Judas, sent greeting and health unto Aristobulus, king Ptolemeus’ master, who was of the stock of the anointed priests, and to the Jews that were in Egypt:
Délivrés par Dieu de grands périls, nous lui rendons de grandes grâces, comme ayant eu à combattre contre un roi.
Insomuch as God hath delivered us from great perils, we thank him highly, as having been in battle against a king.
Car c'est lui qui a chassé ceux qui combattaient dans la ville sainte.
For he cast them out that fought within the holy city.
Car le chef étant arrivé en Perse avec une armée qui paraissait invincible, ils furent massacrés dans le temple de Nanée par une ruse des prêtres de Nanée.
For when the leader was come into Persia, and the army with him that seemed invincible, they were slain in the temple of Nanea by the deceit of Nanea’s priests.
Car Antiochus, sous prétexte de l'épouser, s'était rendu en ce lieu avec ses amis, afin d'en emporter les richesses à titre de dot.
For Antiochus, as though he would marry her, came into the place, and his friends that were with him, to receive money in name of a dowry.
Les prêtres de Nanée les ayant exposées, il entra avec peu de gens dans l'enceinte du temple ; et dès qu'Antiochus fut entré, ils fermèrent le temple ;
Which when the priests of Nanea had set forth, and he was entered with a small company into the compass of the temple, they shut the temple as soon as Antiochus was come in:
Et ouvrant une porte secrète au plafond, ils lancèrent des pierres comme des coups de tonnerre, frappèrent le chef et ses gens, les mirent en pièces, leur coupèrent la tête et les jetèrent à ceux qui étaient dehors.
And opening a privy door of the roof, they threw stones like thunderbolts, and struck down the captain, hewed them in pieces, smote off their heads and cast them to those that were without.
Béni soit en toutes choses notre Dieu, qui a livré les impies.
Blessed be our God in all things, who hath delivered up the ungodly.
Étant donc sur le point de célébrer la purification du temple le vingt-cinquième jour du mois de Casleu, nous avons cru nécessaire de vous en avertir, afin que vous la célébriez aussi, comme la fête des Tabernacles et du feu qui fut donné lorsque Néhémie offrit des sacrifices, après avoir bâti le temple et l'autel.
Therefore whereas we are now purposed to keep the purification of the temple upon the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, we thought it necessary to certify you thereof, that ye also might keep it, as the feast of the tabernacles, and of the fire, which was given us when Neemias offered sacrifice, after that he had builded the temple and the altar.
Car lorsque nos pères furent emmenés en Perse, les prêtres qui étaient alors pieux prirent secrètement le feu de l'autel et le cachèrent dans le creux d'un puits à sec, où ils le mirent en sûreté, de sorte que le lieu resta inconnu de tous.
For when our fathers were led into Persia, the priests that were then devout took the fire of the altar privily, and hid it in an hollow place of a pit without water, where they kept it sure, so that the place was unknown to all men.
Or, après de nombreuses années, quand il plut à Dieu, Néhémie, envoyé par le roi de Perse, envoya les descendants des prêtres qui avaient caché le feu pour le chercher ; mais comme ils nous rapportèrent qu'ils n'avaient point trouvé de feu, mais une eau épaisse,
Now after many years, when it pleased God, Neemias, being sent from the king of Persia, did send of the posterity of those priests that had hid it to the fire: but when they told us they found no fire, but thick water;
Il leur commanda d'en puiser et d'en apporter ; et quand les sacrifices furent disposés, Néhémie ordonna aux prêtres d'arroser de cette eau le bois et ce qui était posé dessus.
Then commanded he them to draw it up, and to bring it; and when the sacrifices were laid on, Neemias commanded the priests to sprinkle the wood and the things laid thereupon with the water.
Cela fait, et le moment étant venu où le soleil, auparavant caché par les nuages, brilla, un grand feu s'alluma, de sorte que tous furent dans l'admiration.
When this was done, and the time came that the sun shone, which afore was hid in the cloud, there was a great fire kindled, so that every man marvelled.
Et les prêtres firent une prière pendant que le sacrifice se consumait, tant les prêtres que tous les autres, Jonathas commençant et les autres répondant avec Néhémie.
And the priests made a prayer whilst the sacrifice was consuming, I say, both the priests, and all the rest, Jonathan beginning, and the rest answering thereunto, as Neemias did.
Et la prière était ainsi conçue : Seigneur, Seigneur Dieu, Créateur de toutes choses, terrible et fort, juste et miséricordieux, toi qui seul es Roi et bon,
And the prayer was after this manner; O Lord, Lord God, Creator of all things, who art fearful and strong, and righteous, and merciful, and the only and gracious King,
Toi qui seul es généreux, seul juste, tout-puissant et éternel, toi qui délivres Israël de tout mal, qui as choisi nos pères et les as sanctifiés,
The only giver of all things, the only just, almighty, and everlasting, thou that deliverest Israel from all trouble, and didst choose the fathers, and sanctify them:
Reçois ce sacrifice pour tout ton peuple d'Israël, garde ta part et sanctifie-la.
Receive the sacrifice for thy whole people Israel, and preserve thine own portion, and sanctify it.
Rassemble ceux qui sont dispersés loin de nous, délivre ceux qui sont esclaves chez les nations, regarde ceux qui sont méprisés et abhorrés, et que les nations sachent que tu es notre Dieu.
Gather those together that are scattered from us, deliver them that serve among the heathen, look upon them that are despised and abhorred, and let the heathen know that thou art our God.
Châtie ceux qui nous oppriment et qui nous outragent avec orgueil.
Punish them that oppress us, and with pride do us wrong.
Établis ton peuple dans ton lieu saint, comme Moïse l'a dit.
Plant thy people again in thy holy place, as Moses hath spoken.
Et les prêtres chantaient des hymnes de louange.
And the priests sung psalms of thanksgiving.
Or, quand le sacrifice fut consumé, Néhémie ordonna de verser le reste de l'eau sur de grandes pierres.
Now when the sacrifice was consumed, Neemias commanded the water that was left to be poured on the great stones.
Ce qui ayant été fait, une flamme s'alluma, mais elle fut consumée par la lumière qui brilla de l'autel.
When this was done, there was kindled a flame: but it was consumed by the light that shined from the altar.
La chose ayant été divulguée, on rapporta au roi de Perse que, dans le lieu où les prêtres emmenés en captivité avaient caché le feu, de l'eau était apparue, et que Néhémie et ses compagnons en avaient purifié les sacrifices.
So when this matter was known, it was told the king of Persia, that in the place, where the priests that were led away had hid the fire, there appeared water, and that Neemias had purified the sacrifices therewith.
Le roi, après avoir examiné la chose, fit entourer le lieu d'une enceinte et le déclara sacré.
Then the king, inclosing the place, made it holy, after he had tried the matter.
Et le roi reçut de nombreux présents qu'il distribuait à ceux qu'il voulait favoriser.
And the king took many gifts, and bestowed thereof on those whom he would gratify.
Néhémie appela ce lieu Nephthar, ce qui signifie purification ; mais beaucoup l'appellent Nephi.
And Neemias called this thing Naphthar, which is as much as to say, a cleansing: but many men call it Nephi.
On trouve aussi dans les archives que le prophète Jérémie ordonna à ceux qui étaient emmenés en captivité de prendre du feu, comme il a été indiqué ;
It is also found in the records, that Jeremy the prophet commanded them that were carried away to take of the fire, as it hath been signified:
Et comment le prophète, leur ayant donné la loi, leur recommanda de ne pas oublier les commandements du Seigneur, et de ne pas s'égarer dans leurs pensées en voyant des idoles d'or et d'argent et leurs ornements.
And how that the prophet, having given them the law, charged them not to forget the commandments of the Lord, and that they should not err in their minds, when they see images of silver and gold, with their ornaments.
Par d'autres discours semblables, il les exhortait à ne pas laisser la loi s'éloigner de leur cœur.
And with other such speeches exhorted he them, that the law should not depart from their hearts.
Il était aussi écrit dans le même document que le prophète, sur un avertissement divin, ordonna que le tabernacle et l'arche l'accompagnassent lorsqu'il se rendit à la montagne où Moïse était monté et avait vu l'héritage de Dieu.
It was also contained in the same writing, that the prophet, being warned of God, commanded the tabernacle and the ark to go with him, as he went forth into the mountain, where Moses climbed up, and saw the heritage of God.
Arrivé là, Jérémie trouva une demeure en forme de grotte ; il y déposa le tabernacle, l'arche et l'autel des parfums, et en boucha l'entrée.
And when Jeremy came thither, he found an hollow cave, wherein he laid the tabernacle, and the ark, and the altar of incense, and so stopped the door.
Quelques-uns de ceux qui le suivaient s'approchèrent pour marquer le chemin, mais ils ne purent le trouver.
And some of those that followed him came to mark the way, but they could not find it.
Jérémie, l'ayant appris, les blâma et dit : Ce lieu restera inconnu jusqu'à ce que Dieu rassemble son peuple et lui fasse miséricorde.
Which when Jeremy perceived, he blamed them, saying, As for that place, it shall be unknown until the time that God gather his people again together, and receive them unto mercy.
Alors le Seigneur manifestera ces choses, et la gloire du Seigneur apparaîtra avec la nuée, comme elle se montra au temps de Moïse et quand Salomon demanda que le lieu fût magnifiquement sanctifié.
Then shall the Lord shew them these things, and the glory of the Lord shall appear, and the cloud also, as it was shewed under Moses, and as when Solomon desired that the place might be honourably sanctified.
On y racontait aussi comment ce sage offrit le sacrifice de la dédicace et de l'achèvement du temple.
It was also declared, that he being wise offered the sacrifice of dedication, and of the finishing of the temple.
Et comme Moïse avait prié le Seigneur et que le feu était descendu du ciel pour consumer les victimes, ainsi Salomon pria et le feu descendit du ciel et consuma les holocaustes.
And as when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the sacrifices: even so prayed Solomon also, and the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offerings.
Et Moïse dit : Parce que le sacrifice pour le péché n'a pas été mangé, il a été consumé.
And Moses said, Because the sin offering was not to be eaten, it was consumed.
Salomon célébra aussi les huit jours de fête.
So Solomon kept those eight days.
Les mêmes faits étaient rapportés dans les mémoires et les commentaires de Néhémie, et comment, fondant une bibliothèque, il rassembla les livres concernant les rois et les prophètes, ceux de David et les lettres des rois au sujet des offrandes sacrées.
The same things also were reported in the writings and commentaries of Neemias; and how he founding a library gathered together the acts of the kings, and the prophets, and of David, and the epistles of the kings concerning the holy gifts.
De même, Judas a rassemblé tous les livres que la guerre nous avait fait perdre, et ils sont entre nos mains.
In like manner also Judas gathered together all those things that were lost by reason of the war we had, and they remain with us,
Si donc vous en avez besoin, envoyez des gens pour vous les apporter.
Wherefore if ye have need thereof, send some to fetch them unto you.
Étant donc sur le point de célébrer la purification, nous vous écrivons ; vous ferez bien de célébrer ces jours.
Whereas we then are about to celebrate the purification, we have written unto you, and ye shall do well, if ye keep the same days.
Dieu, qui a délivré tout son peuple et lui a rendu son héritage, le royaume, le sacerdoce et le sanctuaire,
We hope also, that the God, that delivered all his people, and gave them all an heritage, and the kingdom, and the priesthood, and the sanctuary,
Comme il l'a promis dans la loi, nous espérons qu'il aura bientôt pitié de nous et qu'il nous rassemblera de tous les points de la terre dans le lieu saint ; car il nous a délivrés de grands maux et a purifié le lieu.
As he promised in the law, will shortly have mercy upon us, and gather us together out of every land under heaven into the holy place: for he hath delivered us out of great troubles, and hath purified the place.
Ce qui concerne Judas Maccabée et ses frères, la purification du grand temple et la dédicace de l'autel,
Now as concerning Judas Maccabeus, and his brethren, and the purification of the great temple, and the dedication of the altar,
Ainsi que les guerres contre Antiochus Épiphane et son fils Eupator,
And the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes, and Eupator his son,
Et les apparitions célestes en faveur de ceux qui combattirent courageusement pour le judaïsme, de sorte que, bien que peu nombreux, ils s'emparèrent de tout le pays et mirent en fuite des multitudes barbares,
And the manifest signs that came from heaven unto those that behaved themselves manfully to their honour for Judaism: so that, being but a few, they overcame the whole country, and chased barbarous multitudes,
Recouvrèrent le temple célèbre dans tout l'univers, délivrèrent la ville et rétablirent les lois qui allaient être abolies, le Seigneur leur ayant été propice avec une grande bonté ;
And recovered again the temple renowned all the world over, and freed the city, and upheld the laws which were going down, the Lord being gracious unto them with all favour:

Even as it is no ease unto him that prepareth a banquet, and seeketh the benefit of others: yet for the pleasuring of many we will undertake gladly this great pains;

For as the master builder of a new house must care for the whole building; but he that undertaketh to set it out, and paint it, must seek out fit things for the adorning thereof: even so I think it is with us.

To stand upon every point, and go over things at large, and to be curious in particulars, belongeth to the first author of the story:

But to use brevity, and avoid much labouring of the work, is to be granted to him that will make an abridgment.

Here then will we begin the story: only adding thus much to that which hath been said, that it is a foolish thing to make a long prologue, and to be short in the story itself.
Tandis que la ville sainte était habitée dans une paix entière et que les lois y étaient parfaitement observées, grâce à la piété du grand prêtre Onias et à sa haine du mal,
Now when the holy city was inhabited with all peace, and the laws were kept very well, because of the godliness of Onias the high priest, and his hatred of wickedness,
Il arrivait que les rois eux-mêmes honoraient le lieu et glorifiaient le temple par les plus magnifiques présents ;
It came to pass that even the kings themselves did honour the place, and magnify the temple with their best gifts;
Au point que Séleucus, roi d'Asie, fournissait de ses propres revenus toutes les dépenses pour le service des sacrifices.
Insomuch that Seleucus of Asia of his own revenues bare all the costs belonging to the service of the sacrifices.
Mais un certain Simon, de la tribu de Benjamin, ayant été établi prévôt du temple, entra en contestation avec le grand prêtre au sujet de l'administration de la ville.
But one Simon of the tribe of Benjamin, who was made governor of the temple, fell out with the high priest about disorder in the city.
Ne pouvant l'emporter sur Onias, il alla trouver Apollonius, fils de Thraséas, qui était alors gouverneur de Cœlé-Syrie et de Phénicie,
And when he could not overcome Onias, he gat him to Apollonius the son of Thraseas, who then was governor of Celosyria and Phenice,
Et lui rapporta que le trésor de Jérusalem était rempli de richesses immenses, que la somme d'argent était innombrable et n'avait aucun rapport avec le compte des sacrifices, et qu'il était possible de faire tomber tout cela entre les mains du roi.
And told him that the treasury in Jerusalem was full of infinite sums of money, so that the multitude of their riches, which did not pertain to the account of the sacrifices, was innumerable, and that it was possible to bring all into the king’s hand.
Apollonius ayant vu le roi, lui parla des richesses qui lui avaient été dénoncées ; le roi choisit Héliodore, son intendant, et l'envoya avec l'ordre de transporter cet argent.
Now when Apollonius came to the king, and had shewed him of the money whereof he was told, the king chose out Heliodorus his treasurer, and sent him with a commandment to bring him the foresaid money.
Héliodore se mit aussitôt en route, sous prétexte de visiter les villes de Cœlé-Syrie et de Phénicie, mais en réalité pour exécuter le dessein du roi.
So forthwith Heliodorus took his journey; under a colour of visiting the cities of Celosyria and Phenice, but indeed to fulfil the king’s purpose.
Arrivé à Jérusalem et accueilli avec bienveillance par le grand prêtre de la ville, il lui exposa la dénonciation qui avait été faite au sujet de l'argent, déclara le motif de sa présence et demanda si la chose était réellement ainsi.
And when he was come to Jerusalem, and had been courteously received of the high priest of the city, he told him what intelligence was given of the money, and declared wherefore he came, and asked if these things were so indeed.
Le grand prêtre lui expliqua que c'étaient des dépôts appartenant aux veuves et aux orphelins ;
Then the high priest told him that there was such money laid up for the relief of widows and fatherless children:
Qu'une partie appartenait à Hyrcan, fils de Tobie, homme de haute dignité, et non comme l'avait calomnieusement rapporté l'impie Simon ; que le tout s'élevait à quatre cents talents d'argent et deux cents d'or ;
And that some of it belonged to Hircanus son of Tobias, a man of great dignity, and not as that wicked Simon had misinformed: the sum whereof in all was four hundred talents of silver, and two hundred of gold:
Et qu'il était absolument impossible de faire tort à ceux qui s'étaient confiés à la sainteté du lieu, à la majesté et à l'inviolable respect d'un temple honoré dans tout l'univers.
And that it was altogether impossible that such wrongs should be done unto them, that had committed it to the holiness of the place, and to the majesty and inviolable sanctity of the temple, honoured over all the world.
Mais Héliodore, en vertu des ordres du roi, affirmait que cet argent devait absolument être porté au trésor royal.
But Heliodorus, because of the king’s commandment given him, said, That in any wise it must be brought into the king’s treasury.
Au jour fixé, il entra pour faire l'inventaire de ces richesses ; il y eut alors une grande consternation dans toute la ville.
So at the day which he appointed he entered in to order this matter: wherefore there was no small agony throughout the whole city.
Les prêtres, revêtus de leurs habits sacrés, se prosternèrent devant l'autel et invoquèrent vers le ciel celui qui a établi la loi sur les dépôts, afin qu'il les conservât intacts à ceux qui les avaient confiés.
But the priests, prostrating themselves before the altar in their priests’ vestments, called unto heaven upon him that made a law concerning things given to he kept, that they should safely be preserved for such as had committed them to be kept.
Quiconque regardait le visage du grand prêtre se sentait le cœur blessé ; car son aspect et le changement de sa couleur manifestaient l'angoisse intérieure de son âme.
Then whoso had looked the high priest in the face, it would have wounded his heart: for his countenance and the changing of his colour declared the inward agony of his mind.
Une crainte et un tremblement du corps s'étaient emparés de cet homme, rendant visible à ceux qui le regardaient la douleur qu'il avait au cœur.
For the man was so compassed with fear and horror of the body, that it was manifest to them that looked upon him, what sorrow he had now in his heart.
D'autres accouraient en foule des maisons pour une supplication publique, parce que le lieu saint était sur le point d'être profané.
Others ran flocking out of their houses to the general supplication, because the place was like to come into contempt.
Des femmes, ceintes de sacs sous la poitrine, remplissaient les rues ; les jeunes filles qui étaient enfermées accouraient, les unes vers les portes, les autres vers les murs, d'autres regardaient par les fenêtres.
And the women, girt with sackcloth under their breasts, abounded in the streets, and the virgins that were kept in ran, some to the gates, and some to the walls, and others looked out of the windows.
Et toutes, tendant les mains vers le ciel, faisaient leur prière.
And all, holding their hands toward heaven, made supplication.
C'était une chose pitoyable de voir la multitude se prosterner pêle-mêle, et l'attente anxieuse du grand prêtre dans sa grande agonie.
Then it would have pitied a man to see the falling down of the multitude of all sorts, and the fear of the high priest being in such an agony.
Ils invoquaient le Seigneur Tout-Puissant, afin qu'il gardât les dépôts en toute sûreté pour ceux qui les avaient confiés.
They then called upon the Almighty Lord to keep the things committed of trust safe and sure for those that had committed them.
Cependant Héliodore exécutait ce qu'il avait résolu.
Nevertheless Heliodorus executed that which was decreed.
Tandis qu'il était là présent avec ses gardes auprès du trésor, le Souverain des esprits et de toute puissance fit paraître une grande vision, de sorte que tous ceux qui avaient osé l'accompagner, frappés par la puissance de Dieu, tombèrent en défaillance et furent saisis de terreur.
Now as he was there present himself with his guard about the treasury, the Lord of spirits, and the Prince of all power, caused a great apparition, so that all that presumed to come in with him were astonished at the power of God, and fainted, and were sore afraid.

For there appeared unto them an horse with a terrible rider upon him, and adorned with a very fair covering, and he ran fiercely, and smote at Heliodorus with his forefeet, and it seemed that he that sat upon the horse had complete harness of gold.
Deux autres jeunes hommes apparurent aussi devant lui, éclatants de force, d'une beauté admirable et richement vêtus ; ils se tinrent à ses côtés et le flagellèrent sans relâche, lui infligeant de nombreux coups.
Moreover two other young men appeared before him, notable in strength, excellent in beauty, and comely in apparel, who stood by him on either side; and scourged him continually, and gave him many sore stripes.
Héliodore tomba soudain par terre et fut enveloppé d'épaisses ténèbres ; ses compagnons le relevèrent et le mirent dans une litière.
And Heliodorus fell suddenly unto the ground, and was compassed with great darkness: but they that were with him took him up, and put him into a litter.
Et celui qui venait d'entrer dans ledit trésor avec un grand cortège et toute sa garde, ils l'emportaient, incapable de s'aider lui-même, reconnaissant manifestement la puissance de Dieu.
Thus him, that lately came with a great train and with all his guard into the said treasury, they carried out, being unable to help himself with his weapons: and manifestly they acknowledged the power of God.
Tandis que lui, par la force divine, gisait renversé, sans voix et privé de tout espoir de salut.
For he by the hand of God was cast down, and lay speechless without all hope of life.
Mais les Juifs bénissaient le Seigneur qui avait glorifié son propre lieu ; et le temple qui, peu auparavant, était plein de crainte et de trouble, fut rempli de joie et d'allégresse par la manifestation du Seigneur Tout-Puissant.
But they praised the Lord, that had miraculously honoured his own place: for the temple; which a little afore was full of fear and trouble, when the Almighty Lord appeared, was filled with joy and gladness.
Aussitôt quelques amis d'Héliodore prièrent Onias d'invoquer le Très-Haut, afin qu'il rendît la vie à celui qui était sur le point d'expirer.
Then straightways certain of Heliodorus’ friends prayed Onias, that he would call upon the most High to grant him his life, who lay ready to give up the ghost.
Le grand prêtre, craignant que le roi ne soupçonnât les Juifs d'avoir commis quelque trahison contre Héliodore, offrit un sacrifice pour le salut de cet homme.
So the high priest, suspecting lest the king should misconceive that some treachery had been done to Heliodorus by the Jews, offered a sacrifice for the health of the man.
Pendant que le grand prêtre offrait le sacrifice d'expiation, les mêmes jeunes hommes, revêtus des mêmes habits, apparurent de nouveau et se tinrent près d'Héliodore, disant : Rends de grandes grâces au grand prêtre Onias, car c'est à cause de lui que le Seigneur t'a accordé la vie.
Now as the high priest was making an atonement, the same young men in the same clothing appeared and stood beside Heliodorus, saying, Give Onias the high priest great thanks, insomuch as for his sake the Lord hath granted thee life:
Et toi, qui as été flagellé par le ciel, annonce à tous les hommes la grande puissance de Dieu. Ayant dit ces mots, ils disparurent.
And seeing that thou hast been scourged from heaven, declare unto all men the mighty power of God. And when they had spoken these words, they appeared no more.
Héliodore, après avoir offert un sacrifice au Seigneur et fait de grands vœux à celui qui lui avait conservé la vie, remercia Onias et retourna avec ses troupes vers le roi.
So Heliodorus, after he had offered sacrifice unto the Lord, and made great vows unto him that had saved his life, and saluted Onias, returned with his host to the king.
Et il rendait témoignage devant tous des œuvres du grand Dieu qu'il avait vues de ses propres yeux.
Then testified he to all men the works of the great God, which he had seen with his eyes.
Le roi ayant demandé à Héliodore quel homme serait propre à être envoyé encore une fois à Jérusalem, il répondit :
And when the king Heliodorus, who might be a fit man to be sent yet once again to Jerusalem, he said,
Si tu as quelque ennemi ou quelque traître à tes intérêts, envoie-le là, et tu le recevras bien flagellé, s'il en échappe avec la vie ; car il y a certainement en ce lieu une vertu particulière de Dieu.
If thou hast any enemy or traitor, send him thither, and thou shalt receive him well scourged, if he escape with his life: for in that place, no doubt; there is an especial power of God.
Car celui qui a sa demeure dans le ciel veille sur ce lieu et le protège, et il frappe et perd ceux qui y viennent pour mal faire.
For he that dwelleth in heaven hath his eye on that place, and defendeth it; and he beateth and destroyeth them that come to hurt it.
Voilà ce qui arriva au sujet d'Héliodore et de la garde du trésor.
And the things concerning Heliodorus, and the keeping of the treasury, fell out on this sort.
Or Simon, dont nous avons parlé, qui avait été le dénonciateur de l'argent et de sa patrie, calomniait Onias, comme s'il eût lui-même épouvanté Héliodore et eût été l'auteur de ces maux.
This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he had terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.
Il osait appeler traître celui qui était le bienfaiteur de la ville, le protecteur de sa nation et le zélateur des lois.
Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws.
Mais l'inimitié étant parvenue au point que des meurtres étaient commis par l'un des partisans de Simon,
But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon’s faction murders were committed,
Onias, considérant le danger de cette lutte et voyant qu'Apollonius, gouverneur de Cœlé-Syrie et de Phénicie, favorisait la méchanceté de Simon,
Onias seeing the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, as being the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, did rage, and increase Simon’s malice,
Se rendit auprès du roi, non pour se faire l'accusateur de ses concitoyens, mais en vue de l'intérêt général et particulier de tout le peuple.
He went to the king, not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but seeking the good of all, both publick and private:
Car il voyait qu'il était impossible que les affaires fussent en paix et que Simon cessât sa folie, si le roi n'y mettait bon ordre.
For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto.
Mais après la mort de Séleucus, Antiochus, surnommé l'Illustre, ayant pris possession du royaume, Jason, frère d'Onias, brigua le souverain pontificat,
But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest,
Promettant au roi, par ses sollicitations, trois cent soixante talents d'argent, et sur un autre revenu quatre-vingts talents.
Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents:
En outre, il promettait d'en payer cent cinquante autres, s'il lui était permis d'établir un gymnase et une éphébie, et d'inscrire les habitants de Jérusalem sous le nom d'Antiochiens.
Beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians.
Le roi y ayant consenti, Jason, dès qu'il eut obtenu le pouvoir, commença aussitôt à faire passer ses concitoyens aux mœurs des Grecs.
Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to Greekish fashion.
Il supprima les privilèges que les rois avaient accordés aux Juifs par l'entremise de Jean, père d'Eupolème, celui qui avait été l'ambassadeur de l'amitié et de l'alliance avec les Romains ; et, renversant les institutions légitimes, il introduisit des coutumes contraires à la loi.
And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law:
Car il prit plaisir à bâtir un gymnase au pied même de la citadelle, et il assujettit les plus nobles des jeunes gens à porter le pétase.
For he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat.
C'était là le comble de l'hellénisme et le progrès des mœurs étrangères, par la profanation inouïe de Jason, cet impie et non ce grand prêtre ;
Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;
De sorte que les prêtres ne mettaient plus de zèle au service de l'autel, mais, méprisant le temple et négligeant les sacrifices, ils s'empressaient de prendre part aux distributions illicites de la palestre, dès que l'appel du disque se faisait entendre ;
That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth;
Ne faisant aucun cas des honneurs de leurs pères, ils estimaient par-dessus tout les gloires grecques.
Not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all.
C'est pourquoi une cruelle calamité les atteignit, et ils eurent pour ennemis et pour bourreaux ceux-là mêmes dont ils imitaient les mœurs et auxquels ils voulaient ressembler en tout.
By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things.
Car ce n'est pas une chose légère d'agir impunément contre les lois de Dieu ; c'est ce que le temps suivant fera voir.
For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God: but the time following shall declare these things.
Comme on célébrait à Tyr les jeux quinquennaux en présence du roi,
Now when the game that was used every faith year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present,
L'infâme Jason envoya de Jérusalem des spectateurs, qui étaient des Antiochiens, portant trois cents drachmes d'argent pour le sacrifice d'Hercule ; mais ceux qui les portaient demandèrent qu'on ne les employât pas au sacrifice, car cela n'était pas convenable, mais qu'on les réservât pour d'autres dépenses.
This ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges.
Ainsi cet argent, envoyé par celui qui le destinait au sacrifice d'Hercule, fut employé, à cause de ceux qui l'apportaient, à la construction des galères.
This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules’ sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof, it was employed to the making of gallies.
Apollonius, fils de Ménesthée, ayant été envoyé en Égypte pour l'intronisation du roi Ptolémée Philométor, Antiochus apprit que celui-ci était devenu étranger à ses intérêts, et il songea à sa propre sûreté ; c'est pourquoi il vint à Joppé, puis à Jérusalem.
Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppa, and from thence to Jerusalem:
Il y fut reçu magnifiquement par Jason et par la ville, et il y entra au milieu des flambeaux et des acclamations ; après quoi il ramena son armée en Phénicie.
Where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch alight, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice.
Trois ans après, Jason envoya Ménélas, frère du Simon dont il a été parlé, pour porter l'argent au roi et lui soumettre des mémoires sur des affaires nécessaires.
Three years afterward Jason sent Menelaus, the aforesaid Simon’s brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters.
Mais celui-ci, s'étant fait présenter au roi et l'ayant flatté par l'éclat de sa puissance, s'attribua le souverain pontificat, en offrant trois cents talents d'argent de plus que Jason.
But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.
Ayant reçu les ordres du roi, il revint, n'apportant rien qui fût digne du pontificat, mais ayant les passions d'un tyran cruel et la rage d'une bête sauvage.
So he came with the king’s mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.
Ainsi Jason, qui avait supplanté son propre frère, fut supplanté lui-même par un autre, et fut contraint de s'enfuir au pays des Ammonites.
Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites.
Ménélas obtint donc le pouvoir ; mais quant à l'argent qu'il avait promis au roi, il n'en faisait rien, quoique Sostrate, gouverneur de la citadelle, le lui réclamât.
So Menelaus got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratis the ruler of the castle required it:
Car c'était à celui-ci qu'appartenait la perception des impôts. C'est pourquoi ils furent tous deux appelés devant le roi.
For unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king.
Ménélas laissa pour son substitut dans le pontificat son frère Lysimaque, et Sostrate laissa Cratès, qui commandait aux Cypriotes.
Now Menelaus left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood; and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians.
Sur ces entrefaites, les habitants de Tarse et de Mallos se révoltèrent, parce que leurs villes avaient été données en présent à Antiochis, concubine du roi.
While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king’s concubine, called Antiochus.
Le roi partit donc en hâte pour apaiser ce trouble, laissant pour son lieutenant Andronicus, l'un de ses dignitaires.
Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy.
Alors Ménélas, croyant avoir trouvé une occasion favorable, déroba quelques vases d'or dans le temple, en donna une partie à Andronicus, et vendit le reste à Tyr et dans les villes voisines.
Now Menelaus, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about.
Onias, en ayant eu une connaissance certaine, l'en reprit sévèrement, après s'être retiré dans un lieu d'asile à Daphné, près d'Antioche.
Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia.
C'est pourquoi Ménélas, ayant pris Andronicus à part, le pria de faire périr Onias. Andronicus se rendit auprès d'Onias et, usant de ruse, lui donna sa main droite avec serment ; et bien qu'il fût suspect, il le persuada de sortir de l'asile, et aussitôt il le tua, sans aucun respect pour la justice.
Wherefore Menelaus, taking Andronicus apart, prayed, him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard of justice.
C'est pourquoi non seulement les Juifs, mais aussi beaucoup d'autres nations, furent indignés et affligés du meurtre injuste de cet homme.
For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man.
Le roi étant revenu des lieux de la Cilicie, les Juifs de la ville, et avec eux les Grecs qui détestaient ce crime, se plaignirent de ce qu'Onias avait été tué sans raison.
And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause.
Antiochus en fut profondément affligé ; touché de pitié, il versa des larmes, se souvenant de la sagesse et de la grande modération du défunt.
Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead.
Enflammé de colère, il dépouilla aussitôt Andronicus de la pourpre, déchira ses vêtements et, le faisant conduire par toute la ville jusqu'au lieu même où il avait commis son impiété contre Onias, il y fit mourir le meurtrier sacrilège, le Seigneur lui infligeant le châtiment qu'il méritait.
And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved.
De nombreux sacrilèges ayant été commis dans la ville par Lysimaque, avec le consentement de Ménélas, et le bruit s'en étant répandu, la multitude se souleva contre Lysimaque, car beaucoup de vases d'or avaient déjà été emportés.
Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelaus, and the fruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away.
Le peuple s'étant soulevé et étant plein de fureur, Lysimaque arma environ trois mille hommes et commença à user de violence, sous la conduite d'un certain Auranus, homme aussi avancé en âge qu'en folie.
Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly.
Mais quand ils virent l'attaque de Lysimaque, les uns saisirent des pierres, d'autres de gros bâtons, d'autres prirent de la poussière qui était là sous leur main, et ils jetèrent le tout pêle-mêle sur Lysimaque et sur ses gens.
They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them.
Ils en blessèrent un grand nombre, en terrassèrent quelques-uns, mirent tous les autres en fuite, et tuèrent le sacrilège lui-même près du trésor.
Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury.
À la suite de ces événements, une accusation fut intentée contre Ménélas.
Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelaus.
Le roi étant venu à Tyr, trois hommes envoyés par le conseil des anciens plaidèrent la cause devant lui.
Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him:
Ménélas, se voyant convaincu, promit une grande somme d'argent à Ptolémée, fils de Dorymène, pour qu'il apaisât le roi en sa faveur.
But Menelaus, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him.
Ptolémée, ayant mené le roi à l'écart sous un portique, comme pour prendre le frais, le fit changer de sentiment.
Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind:
Il déchargea de l'accusation Ménélas, qui était pourtant la cause de tout le mal, et il condamna à mort ces malheureux qui, s'ils eussent plaidé leur cause même devant des Scythes, auraient été jugés innocents.
Insomuch that he discharged Menelaus from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death.
Ainsi, ceux qui avaient défendu la cause de la ville, du peuple et des vases sacrés, subirent bientôt un injuste châtiment.
Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.
C'est pourquoi les habitants de Tyr eux-mêmes, indignés de cette action cruelle, pourvurent magnifiquement à leur sépulture.
Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried.
Quant à Ménélas, grâce à l'avarice de ceux qui étaient au pouvoir, il se maintint dans sa charge, croissant en malice et devenant le grand fléau de ses concitoyens.
And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelaus remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens.
Vers ce même temps, Antiochus préparait sa seconde expédition en Égypte.
About the same time Antiochus prepared his second voyage into Egypt:
Or il arriva que, dans toute la ville, pendant près de quarante jours, on vit courir dans les airs des cavaliers vêtus de robes d'or et armés de lances, comme des cohortes de soldats,
And then it happened, that through all the city, for the space almost of forty days, there were seen horsemen running in the air, in cloth of gold, and armed with lances, like a band of soldiers,
Et des escadrons de cavalerie rangés en bataille, des attaques et des charges de part et d'autre, des mouvements de boucliers, des forêts de piques, des épées nues, des jets de traits, l'éclat des armures d'or et des cuirasses de toute espèce.
And troops of horsemen in array, encountering and running one against another, with shaking of shields, and multitude of pikes, and drawing of swords, and casting of darts, and glittering of golden ornaments, and harness of all sorts.
C'est pourquoi tous priaient pour que ce prodige fût d'un bon augure.
Wherefore every man prayed that that apparition might turn to good.
Un faux bruit s'étant répandu qu'Antiochus était mort, Jason prit avec lui au moins mille hommes et attaqua la ville à l'improviste ; ceux qui étaient sur les murailles ayant été repoussés et la ville étant enfin prise, Ménélas s'enfuit dans la citadelle.
Now when there was gone forth a false rumour, as though Antiochus had been dead, Jason took at the least a thousand men, and suddenly made an assault upon the city; and they that were upon the walls being put back, and the city at length taken, Menelaus fled into the castle:
Jason massacrait ses concitoyens sans pitié, ne comprenant pas que remporter un avantage sur ses propres parents était le plus grand des malheurs, et s'imaginant remporter des trophées sur des ennemis et non sur ses compatriotes.
But Jason slew his own citizens without mercy, not considering that to get the day of them of his own nation would be a most unhappy day for him; but thinking they had been his enemies, and not his countrymen, whom he conquered.
Il ne s'empara pourtant pas du pouvoir, et ne recueillit que la honte pour prix de sa trahison, et il s'enfuit de nouveau au pays des Ammonites.
Howbeit for all this he obtained not the principality, but at the last received shame for the reward of his treason, and fled again into the country of the Ammonites.
Enfin, il eut une fin misérable : accusé devant Arétas, roi des Arabes, fuyant de ville en ville, poursuivi par tous, détesté comme un déserteur des lois et abhorré comme l'ennemi de sa patrie et de ses concitoyens, il fut rejeté en Égypte.
In the end therefore he had an unhappy return, being accused before Aretas the king of the Arabians, fleeing from city to city, pursued of all men, hated as a forsaker of the laws, and being had in abomination as an open enemy of his country and countrymen, he was cast out into Egypt.
Celui qui avait banni tant de gens de leur patrie périt lui-même sur une terre étrangère, s'étant rendu chez les Lacédémoniens dans l'espoir d'y trouver un refuge à cause de leur parenté.
Thus he that had driven many out of their country perished in a strange land, retiring to the Lacedemonians, and thinking there to find succour by reason of his kindred:
Et lui qui avait laissé tant de morts sans sépulture, il ne fut point pleuré, n'eut point de funérailles et ne fut point déposé dans le tombeau de ses pères.
And he that had cast out many unburied had none to mourn for him, nor any solemn funerals at all, nor sepulchre with his fathers.
Ces événements étant venus à la connaissance du roi, il s'imagina que la Judée voulait rompre l'alliance ; c'est pourquoi, partant d'Égypte avec un cœur de bête sauvage, il prit la ville de vive force.
Now when this that was done came to the king’s car, he thought that Judea had revolted: whereupon removing out of Egypt in a furious mind, he took the city by force of arms,
Il ordonna aux soldats de tuer sans quartier ceux qu'ils rencontreraient et d'égorger ceux qui se retireraient dans les maisons.
And commanded his men of war not to spare such as they met, and to slay such as went up upon the houses.
Ce fut un massacre de jeunes et de vieux, une extermination de femmes et d'enfants, un carnage de vierges et de nourrissons.
Thus there was killing of young and old, making away of men, women, and children, slaying of virgins and infants.
En trois jours seulement, quatre-vingt mille personnes furent détruites : quarante mille furent massacrées, et il n'y en eut pas moins de vendues.
And there were destroyed within the space of three whole days fourscore thousand, whereof forty thousand were slain in the conflict; and no fewer sold than slain.
Non content de cela, il osa entrer dans le temple le plus saint de toute la terre, ayant pour guide Ménélas, ce traître aux lois et à sa patrie.
Yet was he not content with this, but presumed to go into the most holy temple of all the world; Menelaus, that traitor to the laws, and to his own country, being his guide:

And taking the holy vessels with polluted hands, and with profane hands pulling down the things that were dedicated by other kings to the augmentation and glory and honour of the place, he gave them away.
Antiochus s'enorgueillissait dans sa pensée, ne considérant pas que le Seigneur s'était courroucé pour un peu de temps à cause des péchés des habitants de la ville, et que c'était pour cela qu'il méprisait ce lieu.
And so haughty was Antiochus in mind, that he considered not that the Lord was angry for a while for the sins of them that dwelt in the city, and therefore his eye was not upon the place.
Autrement, s'ils n'eussent pas été enveloppés dans de nombreux péchés, cet homme, dès son arrivée, eût été flagellé et repoussé de son audace, comme l'avait été Héliodore, que le roi Séleucus avait envoyé pour visiter le trésor.
For had they not been formerly wrapped in many sins, this man, as soon as he had come, had forthwith been scourged, and put back from his presumption, as Heliodorus was, whom Seleucus the king sent to view the treasury.
Mais le Seigneur n'a pas choisi la nation pour le lieu, mais le lieu pour la nation.
Nevertheless God did not choose the people for the place’s sake, but the place far the people’s sake.
C'est pourquoi le lieu lui-même, ayant participé aux malheurs de la nation, participa ensuite aux bienfaits du Seigneur ; et après avoir été abandonné au temps de la colère du Tout-Puissant, il fut de nouveau rétabli dans une gloire immense, lorsque le grand Seigneur se fut réconcilié.
And therefore the place itself, that was partaker with them of the adversity that happened to the nation, did afterward communicate in the benefits sent from the Lord: and as it was forsaken in the wrath of the Almighty, so again, the great Lord being reconciled, it was set up with all glory.
Antiochus, ayant donc enlevé du temple mille huit cents talents, s'en retourna en hâte à Antioche, s'imaginant dans son orgueil qu'il rendrait la terre navigable et la mer praticable à pied, tant son cœur était élevé.
So when Antiochus had carried out of the temple a thousand and eight hundred talents, he departed in all haste unto Antiochia, weening in his pride to make the land navigable, and the sea passable by foot: such was the haughtiness of his mind.
Il laissa des gouverneurs pour affliger la nation : à Jérusalem, Philippe, Phrygien de nation, et plus barbare de mœurs que celui qui l'avait établi ;
And he left governors to vex the nation: at Jerusalem, Philip, for his country a Phrygian, and for manners more barbarous than he that set him there;
Au mont Garizim, Andronicus ; et outre ceux-là, Ménélas, qui pesait sur ses concitoyens plus cruellement que les autres, ayant une âme ennemie contre les Juifs.
And at Garizim, Andronicus; and besides, Menelaus, who worse than all the rest bare an heavy hand over the citizens, having a malicious mind against his countrymen the Jews.
Il envoya aussi le détestable chef Apollonius avec une armée de vingt-deux mille hommes, lui ordonnant de tuer tous les hommes faits et de vendre les femmes et les enfants.
He sent also that detestable ringleader Apollonius with an army of two and twenty thousand, commanding him to slay all those that were in their best age, and to sell the women and the younger sort:
Celui-ci, étant arrivé à Jérusalem et feignant la paix, se tint tranquille jusqu'au saint jour du sabbat ; puis, surprenant les Juifs pendant qu'ils chômaient, il ordonna à ses gens de prendre les armes.
Who coming to Jerusalem, and pretending peace, did forbear till the holy day of the sabbath, when taking the Jews keeping holy day, he commanded his men to arm themselves.
Il fit égorger tous ceux qui étaient sortis pour le spectacle, et courant par la ville avec ses soldats, il massacra une immense multitude.
And so he slew all them that were gone to the celebrating of the sabbath, and running through the city with weapons slew great multitudes.
Mais Judas Maccabée, s'étant retiré avec neuf autres environ dans le désert, vivait dans les montagnes à la manière des bêtes sauvages avec ses compagnons, et ils ne se nourrissaient que d'herbes, pour ne pas participer à la souillure.
But Judas Maccabeus with nine others, or thereabout, withdrew himself into the wilderness, and lived in the mountains after the manner of beasts, with his company, who fed on herbs continually, lest they should be partakers of the pollution.
Peu de temps après, le roi envoya un vieillard d'Athènes pour forcer les Juifs à abandonner les lois de leurs pères et à ne plus vivre selon les lois de Dieu ;
Not long after this the king sent an old man of Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers, and not to live after the laws of God:
Pour profaner aussi le temple de Jérusalem et le dédier à Jupiter Olympien, et celui du mont Garizim à Jupiter Hospitalier, comme le demandaient les habitants du lieu.
And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius; and that in Garizim, of Jupiter the Defender of strangers, as they did desire that dwelt in the place.
L'invasion de ce mal était pénible et insupportable à tous.
The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people:
Car le temple était rempli de débauches et de festins par les païens, qui se divertissaient avec des courtisanes et avaient commerce avec des femmes dans l'enceinte sacrée, et y apportaient des choses qu'il n'était pas permis d'y introduire.
For the temple was filled with riot and revelling by the Gentiles, who dallied with harlots, and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places, and besides that brought in things that were not lawful.
L'autel même était chargé de choses illicites que les lois défendaient.
The altar also was filled with profane things, which the law forbiddeth.
On ne pouvait plus ni observer le sabbat, ni célébrer les fêtes de nos pères, ni même s'avouer Juif.
Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath days or ancient fasts, or to profess himself at all to be a Jew.
On était mené par une amère nécessité, chaque mois, au jour de la naissance du roi, pour sacrifier ; et quand on célébrait les fêtes de Bacchus, on était forcé de marcher en l'honneur de Bacchus, couronné de lierre.
And in the day of the king’s birth every month they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices; and when the fast of Bacchus was kept, the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus, carrying ivy.
Un décret fut aussi rendu, sur la proposition de Ptolémée, pour les villes voisines des païens, afin qu'elles agissent de même contre les Juifs et les forcent à sacrifier ;
Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the heathen, by the suggestion of Ptolemee, against the Jews, that they should observe the same fashions, and be partakers of their sacrifices:
Et que ceux qui ne voudraient pas passer aux coutumes des Grecs fussent mis à mort. On pouvait alors voir la misère présente.
And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death. Then might a man have seen the present misery.
Car deux femmes furent dénoncées pour avoir circoncis leurs enfants ; on les promena publiquement par la ville, leurs nourrissons suspendus à leurs mamelles, et on les précipita du haut des murs.
For there were two women brought, who had circumcised their children; whom when they had openly led round about the city, the babes handing at their breasts, they cast them down headlong from the wall.
D'autres, s'étant assemblés dans des grottes voisines pour célébrer secrètement le jour du sabbat, furent dénoncés à Philippe et brûlés tous ensemble, parce qu'ils craignaient de se défendre, par respect pour la sainteté de ce jour.
And others, that had run together into caves near by, to keep the sabbath day secretly, being discovered by Philip, were all burnt together, because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day.
Je prie donc ceux qui liront ce livre de ne pas s'effrayer de ces malheurs, mais de considérer que ces châtiments sont arrivés non pour la perte, mais pour la correction de notre race.
Now I beseech those that read this book, that they be not discouraged for these calamities, but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction, but for a chastening of our nation.
Car c'est une marque d'une grande bonté, quand les pécheurs ne sont pas laissés longtemps à leur gré, mais sont aussitôt punis.
For it is a token of his great goodness, when wicked doers are not suffered any long time, but forthwith punished.
Car le Seigneur n'attend pas pour nous, comme pour les autres nations, que la mesure de leurs péchés soit comble pour les punir ;
For not as with other nations, whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish, till they be come to the fulness of their sins, so dealeth he with us,
Mais il a résolu de nous traiter de telle sorte que, nos péchés étant parvenus à leur comble, il n'ait pas à nous punir à la fin.
Lest that, being come to the height of sin, afterwards he should take vengeance of us.
C'est pourquoi il ne nous retire jamais sa miséricorde ; et s'il châtie son peuple par l'adversité, il ne l'abandonne pas.
And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us: and though he punish with adversity, yet doth he never forsake his people.
Que ceci soit dit pour nous avertir ; mais revenons en peu de mots au récit des faits.
But let this that we at spoken be for a warning unto us. And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in a few words.
Éléazar, l'un des premiers docteurs de la loi, homme déjà avancé en âge et d'un aspect très noble, était forcé, en lui ouvrant la bouche, de manger de la chair de porc.
Eleazar, one of the principal scribes, an aged man, and of a well favoured countenance, was constrained to open his mouth, and to eat swine’s flesh.
Mais lui, préférant une mort glorieuse à une vie infâme, marchait volontairement au supplice, après avoir rejeté cette nourriture ;
But he, choosing rather to die gloriously, than to live stained with such an abomination, spit it forth, and came of his own accord to the torment,
Comme doivent le faire ceux qui ont le courage de rejeter ce qu'il n'est pas permis de manger, même par amour pour la vie.
As it behoved them to come, that are resolute to stand out against such things, as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted.
Ceux qui présidaient à ce festin sacrilège, le connaissant de longue date, le prirent à part et l'exhortèrent à faire apporter des viandes dont il lui était permis de manger, préparées par lui-même, et à feindre d'en manger comme si c'eût été de la chair du sacrifice ordonné par le roi ;
But they that had the charge of that wicked feast, for the old acquaintance they had with the man, taking him aside, besought him to bring flesh of his own provision, such as was lawful for him to use, and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king;
Afin que, par cette simulation, il fût délivré de la mort et qu'il éprouvât les effets de leur ancienne amitié.
That in so doing he might be delivered from death, and for the old friendship with them find favour.
Mais lui, faisant une sage réflexion, digne de son âge, de l'autorité de sa vieillesse, de ses cheveux blancs honorés et de sa conduite irréprochable dès l'enfance, et surtout de la sainte loi établie par Dieu, répondit aussitôt qu'il aimait mieux être envoyé au tombeau.
But he began to consider discreetly, and as became his age, and the excellency of his ancient years, and the honour of his gray head, whereon was come, and his most honest education from a child, or rather the holy law made and given by God: therefore he answered accordingly, and willed them straightways to send him to the grave.
Car, disait-il, il ne convient pas à notre âge de feindre, de peur que beaucoup de jeunes gens, croyant qu'Éléazar, à l'âge de quatre-vingt-dix ans, a passé aux mœurs des étrangers,
For it becometh not our age, said he, in any wise to dissemble, whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar, being fourscore years old and ten, were now gone to a strange religion;
Ne soient eux-mêmes trompés par ma simulation, pour un peu de temps d'une vie corruptible, et que j'attire ainsi l'opprobre et l'exécration sur ma vieillesse.
And so they through mine hypocrisy, and desire to live a little time and a moment longer, should be deceived by me, and I get a stain to mine old age, and make it abominable.
Car, quand je serais délivré pour le présent du supplice des hommes, je n'échapperais pas à la main du Tout-Puissant, ni pendant ma vie, ni après ma mort.
For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men: yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty, neither alive, nor dead.
C'est pourquoi, en quittant courageusement la vie, je me montrerai digne de ma vieillesse,
Wherefore now, manfully changing this life, I will shew myself such an one as mine age requireth,
Et je laisserai aux jeunes gens un noble exemple, si je meurs volontairement et généreusement pour nos vénérables et saintes lois. Ayant ainsi parlé, il alla aussitôt au supplice.
And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and courageously for the honourable and holy laws. And when he had said these words, immediately he went to the torment:
Ceux qui le conduisaient changèrent en haine la bienveillance qu'ils avaient pour lui, parce que les paroles qu'il venait de prononcer leur paraissaient être un effet de l'orgueil.
They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred, because the foresaid speeches proceeded, as they thought, from a desperate mind.
Étant sur le point de mourir sous les coups, il dit en gémissant : Le Seigneur, qui a la science sainte, sait bien que, pouvant être délivré de la mort, je souffre dans mon corps des douleurs cruelles, mais que dans mon âme je les endure avec joie, parce que je le crains.
But when he was ready to die with stripes, he groaned, and said, It is manifest unto the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, that whereas I might have been delivered from death, I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten: but in soul am well content to suffer these things, because I fear him.
C'est ainsi que cet homme mourut, laissant sa mort pour exemple de courage et pour monument de vertu, non seulement aux jeunes gens, mais à toute la nation.
And thus this man died, leaving his death for an example of a noble courage, and a memorial of virtue, not only unto young men, but unto all his nation.
Il arriva aussi que sept frères furent arrêtés avec leur mère, et que le roi voulut les contraindre, au moyen des fouets et des nerfs de bœuf, à manger de la chair de porc interdite par la loi.
It came to pass also, that seven brethren with their mother were taken, and compelled by the king against the law to taste swine’s flesh, and were tormented with scourges and whips.
L'un d'eux, parlant le premier, dit ainsi : Que veux-tu nous demander et apprendre de nous ? Nous sommes prêts à mourir plutôt que de transgresser les lois de nos pères.
But one of them that spake first said thus, What wouldest thou ask or learn of us? we are ready to die, rather than to transgress the laws of our fathers.
Le roi, étant entré en fureur, ordonna de chauffer des poêles et des chaudières d'airain.
Then the king, being in a rage, commanded pans and caldrons to be made hot:
Dès qu'elles furent chaudes, il commanda de couper la langue à celui qui avait parlé le premier, de lui arracher la peau de la tête et de lui couper les extrémités des mains et des pieds, sous les yeux de ses autres frères et de sa mère.
Which forthwith being heated, he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first, and to cut off the utmost parts of his body, the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on.
Lorsqu'il fut ainsi mutilé de tous ses membres, le roi ordonna de l'approcher du feu, tandis qu'il respirait encore, et de le faire griller dans la poêle ; et pendant que la vapeur de la poêle se répandait au loin, les autres s'exhortaient mutuellement avec leur mère à mourir courageusement, disant :
Now when he was thus maimed in all his members, he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire, and to be fried in the pan: and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed, they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully, saying thus,
Le Seigneur Dieu regarde, et il aura certainement pitié de nous, comme Moïse l'a déclaré dans son cantique : Et il aura pitié de ses serviteurs.
The Lord God looketh upon us, and in truth hath comfort in us, as Moses in his song, which witnessed to their faces, declared, saying, And he shall be comforted in his servants.
Le premier étant mort de la sorte, ils amenèrent le second pour s'en jouer ; et lui ayant arraché la peau de la tête avec les cheveux, ils lui demandaient s'il voulait manger avant d'être torturé dans tous les membres de son corps.
So when the first was dead after this number, they brought the second to make him a mocking stock: and when they had pulled off the skin of his head with the hair, they asked him, Wilt thou eat, before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body?
Mais lui, répondant dans la langue de ses pères, dit : Non. C'est pourquoi il subit à son tour les mêmes tourments que le premier.
But he answered in his own language, and said, No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order, as the former did.
Prêt à rendre le dernier soupir, il dit : Scélérat, tu nous ôtes la vie présente, mais le Roi du monde nous ressuscitera pour une vie éternelle, nous qui mourons pour ses lois.
And when he was at the last gasp, he said, Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life, but the King of the world shall raise us up, who have died for his laws, unto everlasting life.
Après celui-ci, on se joua du troisième ; et quand on le lui ordonna, il présenta aussitôt sa langue et tendit ses mains avec courage,
After him was the third made a mocking stock: and when he was required, he put out his tongue, and that right soon, holding forth his hands manfully.
En disant avec assurance : C'est du ciel que je tiens ces membres, mais je les méprise pour les lois de Dieu, car j'espère les recevoir de lui un jour.
And said courageously, These I had from heaven; and for his laws I despise them; and from him I hope to receive them again.
De sorte que le roi et sa suite étaient frappés du courage de ce jeune homme, qui comptait pour rien les douleurs.
Insomuch that the king, and they that were with him, marvelled at the young man’s courage, for that he nothing regarded the pains.
Celui-ci étant mort, ils tourmentèrent le quatrième de la même manière.
Now when this man was dead also, they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner.
Sur le point de mourir, il parla ainsi : Il vaut mieux, en mourant par la main des hommes, attendre de Dieu l'espérance d'être ressuscité par lui ; mais pour toi, il n'y aura pas de résurrection pour la vie.
So when he was ready to die he said thus, It is good, being put to death by men, to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him: as for thee, thou shalt have no resurrection to life.
Ils amenèrent ensuite le cinquième et le tourmentèrent.
Afterward they brought the fifth also, and mangled him.
Mais lui, regardant le roi, dit : Puisque tu as le pouvoir sur les hommes, bien que tu sois corruptible, tu fais ce que tu veux ; mais ne pense pas que notre nation soit abandonnée de Dieu.
Then looked he unto the king, and said, Thou hast power over men, thou art corruptible, thou doest what thou wilt; yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God;
Attends un peu, et tu verras sa grande puissance, et comment il te tourmentera, toi et ta postérité.
But abide a while, and behold his great power, how he will torment thee and thy seed.
Après celui-ci, ils amenèrent le sixième, qui, étant sur le point de mourir, dit : Ne t'égare pas inutilement ; car c'est pour nous-mêmes que nous souffrons ces maux, ayant péché contre notre Dieu ; c'est pourquoi des choses étonnantes nous arrivent.
After him also they brought the sixth, who being ready to die said, Be not deceived without cause: for we suffer these things for ourselves, having sinned against our God: therefore marvellous things are done unto us.
Mais ne pense pas que tu resteras impuni, toi qui as osé combattre contre Dieu.
But think not thou, that takest in hand to strive against God, that thou shalt escape unpunished.
Mais la mère fut admirable au-dessus de tout et digne d'une mémoire illustre ; car, voyant périr ses sept fils en un seul jour, elle le supporta avec courage, à cause de l'espérance qu'elle avait dans le Seigneur.
But the mother was marvellous above all, and worthy of honourable memory: for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day, she bare it with a good courage, because of the hope that she had in the Lord.
Elle exhortait chacun d'eux dans la langue de ses pères, remplie de sagesse ; et, animant son cœur de femme d'un courage viril, elle leur disait :
Yea, she exhorted every one of them in her own language, filled with courageous spirits; and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach, she said unto them,
Je ne sais comment vous avez été formés dans mon sein ; car ce n'est pas moi qui vous ai donné l'esprit et la vie, ni moi qui ai assemblé les membres de chacun de vous.
I cannot tell how ye came into my womb: for I neither gave you breath nor life, neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you;
C'est le Créateur du monde, qui a formé la naissance de l'homme et qui a trouvé l'origine de toutes choses, qui vous rendra, dans sa miséricorde, l'esprit et la vie, puisque maintenant vous vous méprisez vous-mêmes pour ses lois.
But doubtless the Creator of the world, who formed the generation of man, and found out the beginning of all things, will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again, as ye now regard not your own selves for his laws’ sake.
Antiochus, se croyant méprisé et soupçonnant que ces paroles étaient un outrage, tandis que le plus jeune vivait encore, non seulement l'exhortait par des paroles, mais lui affirmait avec serment qu'il le rendrait riche et heureux s'il abandonnait les lois de ses pères, qu'il l'admettrait au nombre de ses amis et lui confierait des charges.
Now Antiochus, thinking himself despised, and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech, whilst the youngest was yet alive, did not only exhort him by words, but also assured him with oaths, that he would make him both a rich and a happy man, if he would turn from the laws of his fathers; and that also he would take him for his friend, and trust him with affairs.
Mais le jeune homme n'y prêtant aucune attention, le roi appela la mère et l'exhorta à donner à son fils des conseils salutaires.
But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him, the king called his mother, and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life.
Après qu'il l'eut exhortée par beaucoup de paroles, elle promit qu'elle persuaderait son fils.
And when he had exhorted her with many words, she promised him that she would counsel her son.
Se penchant vers lui et se jouant du tyran cruel, elle dit dans la langue de ses pères : Mon fils, aie pitié de moi, qui t'ai porté neuf mois dans mon sein, qui t'ai allaité pendant trois ans, qui t'ai nourri et conduit jusqu'à cet âge.
But she bowing herself toward him, laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn, spake in her country language on this manner; O my son, have pity upon me that bare thee nine months in my womb, and gave thee such three years, and nourished thee, and brought thee up unto this age, and endured the troubles of education.
Je te prie, mon fils, de regarder le ciel et la terre, et tout ce qu'ils contiennent, et de comprendre que Dieu les a faits de rien, et que la race des hommes a été faite de la même manière.
I beseech thee, my son, look upon the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, and consider that God made them of things that were not; and so was mankind made likewise.
Ne crains pas ce bourreau, mais, te rendant digne de tes frères, accepte la mort, afin que je te retrouve avec eux au temps de la miséricorde.
Fear not this tormentor, but, being worthy of thy brethren, take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren.
Tandis qu'elle parlait encore, le jeune homme dit : Qu'attendez-vous ? Je n'obéis point à l'ordre du roi, mais j'obéis au commandement de la loi qui a été donnée à nos pères par Moïse.
Whiles she was yet speaking these words, the young man said, Whom wait ye for? I will not obey the king’s commandment: but I will obey the commandment of the law that was given unto our fathers by Moses.
Et toi, qui as inventé toute sorte de malices contre les Hébreux, tu n'échapperas pas à la main de Dieu.
And thou, that hast been the author of all mischief against the Hebrews, shalt not escape the hands of God.
Car nous, nous souffrons pour nos propres péchés.
For we suffer because of our sins.
Et si le Seigneur vivant s'est courroucé contre nous pour un peu de temps, afin de nous châtier et de nous corriger, il se réconciliera de nouveau avec ses serviteurs.
And though the living Lord be angry with us a little while for our chastening and correction, yet shall he be at one again with his servants.
Mais toi, impie et le plus scélérat de tous les hommes, ne t'élève pas vainement et ne te flatte pas d'espérances incertaines, en levant la main contre ses serviteurs ;
But thou, O godless man, and of all other most wicked, be not lifted up without a cause, nor puffed up with uncertain hopes, lifting up thy hand against the servants of God:
Car tu n'as pas encore échappé au jugement du Dieu Tout-Puissant qui voit tout.
For thou hast not yet escaped the judgment of Almighty God, who seeth all things.
Nos frères, après avoir enduré une courte douleur, ont obtenu la vie éternelle selon l'alliance de Dieu ; mais toi, par le jugement de Dieu, tu subiras les peines méritées par ton orgueil.
For our brethren, who now have suffered a short pain, are dead under God’s covenant of everlasting life: but thou, through the judgment of God, shalt receive just punishment for thy pride.
Pour moi, comme mes frères, je livre mon corps et mon âme pour les lois de nos pères, invoquant Dieu afin qu'il soit bientôt propice à notre nation, et que toi, par des tourments et des fléaux, tu confesses qu'il est le seul Dieu ;
But I, as my brethren, offer up my body and life for the laws of our fathers, beseeching God that he would speedily be merciful unto our nation; and that thou by torments and plagues mayest confess, that he alone is God;
Et que la colère du Tout-Puissant, qui est tombée avec justice sur toute notre race, s'arrête en moi et en mes frères.
And that in me and my brethren the wrath of the Almighty, which is justly brought upon our nation, may cease.
Alors le roi, transporté de fureur, le traita plus cruellement que les autres, indigné de se voir ainsi bafoué.
Then the king, being in a rage, handed him worse than all the rest, and took it grievously that he was mocked.
Celui-ci mourut donc pur, ayant mis toute sa confiance dans le Seigneur.
So this man died undefiled, and put his whole trust in the Lord.
Enfin, après ses fils, la mère mourut aussi.
Last of all after the sons the mother died.
En voilà assez sur les festins sacrilèges et sur les cruautés inouïes.
Let this be enough now to have spoken concerning the idolatrous feasts, and the extreme tortures.
Cependant Judas Maccabée et ses compagnons entraient secrètement dans les bourgs, appelaient leurs parents et, s'adjoignant ceux qui étaient restés fidèles au judaïsme, ils rassemblèrent environ six mille hommes.
Then Judas Maccabeus, and they that were with him, went privily into the towns, and called their kinsfolks together, and took unto them all such as continued in the Jews’ religion, and assembled about six thousand men.
Ils invoquaient le Seigneur, afin qu'il regardât son peuple foulé aux pieds par tous, qu'il eût pitié du temple profané par les impies,
And they called upon the Lord, that he would look upon the people that was trodden down of all; and also pity the temple profaned of ungodly men;
Qu'il eût compassion de la ville détruite et qui allait être égalée au sol, et qu'il écoutât la voix du sang qui criait vers lui ;
And that he would have compassion upon the city, sore defaced, and ready to be made even with the ground; and hear the blood that cried unto him,
Qu'il se souvînt du massacre injuste des enfants innocents et des blasphèmes proférés contre son nom, et qu'il manifestât sa haine contre le mal.
And remember the wicked slaughter of harmless infants, and the blasphemies committed against his name; and that he would shew his hatred against the wicked.
Maccabée, s'étant mis à la tête d'une troupe, devint irrésistible pour les nations, la colère du Seigneur s'étant changée en miséricorde.
Now when Maccabeus had his company about him, he could not be withstood by the heathen: for the wrath of the Lord was turned into mercy.
Tombant à l'improviste sur les bourgs et les villes, il les brûlait ; il s'emparait des postes avantageux et mettait en fuite un grand nombre d'ennemis.
Therefore he came at unawares, and burnt up towns and cities, and got into his hands the most commodious places, and overcame and put to flight no small number of his enemies.
Il profitait surtout de la nuit pour ces sortes d'attaques, et le bruit de sa valeur se répandait partout.
But specially took he advantage of the night for such privy attempts, insomuch that the fruit of his holiness was spread every where.
Philippe, voyant que cet homme faisait de jour en jour des progrès et que ses affaires réussissaient le plus souvent, écrivit à Ptolémée, gouverneur de Cœlé-Syrie et de Phénicie, de venir au secours des intérêts du roi.
So when Philip saw that this man increased by little and little, and that things prospered with him still more and more, he wrote unto Ptolemeus, the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, to yield more aid to the king’s affairs.
Celui-ci choisit aussitôt Nicanor, fils de Patrocle, l'un de ses premiers amis, et l'envoya avec au moins vingt mille hommes de toutes les nations, pour exterminer toute la race des Juifs ; il lui adjoignit Gorgias, général expérimenté dans l'art de la guerre.
Then forthwith choosing Nicanor the son of Patroclus, one of his special friends, he sent him with no fewer than twenty thousand of all nations under him, to root out the whole generation of the Jews; and with him he joined also Gorgias a captain, who in matters of war had great experience.
Nicanor se proposait de payer, avec le prix des captifs juifs, le tribut de deux mille talents que le roi devait aux Romains.
So Nicanor undertook to make so much money of the captive Jews, as should defray the tribute of two thousand talents, which the king was to pay to the Romans.
Il envoya aussitôt vers les villes maritimes, invitant à l'achat d'esclaves juifs, et promettant de donner quatre-vingt-dix captifs pour un talent, ne s'attendant pas au châtiment du Tout-Puissant qui allait le suivre.
Wherefore immediately he sent to the cities upon the sea coast, proclaiming a sale of the captive Jews, and promising that they should have fourscore and ten bodies for one talent, not expecting the vengeance that was to follow upon him from the Almighty God.
Judas, ayant été informé de la venue de Nicanor, annonça à ceux qui étaient avec lui l'approche de l'armée.
Now when word was brought unto Judas of Nicanor’s coming, and he had imparted unto those that were with him that the army was at hand,
Alors ceux qui étaient timides et qui ne se fiaient pas à la justice de Dieu, s'enfuirent et se retirèrent en divers lieux.
They that were fearful, and distrusted the justice of God, fled, and conveyed themselves away.
Les autres vendaient tout ce qui leur restait, et priaient ensemble le Seigneur de les délivrer de l'impie Nicanor, qui les avait vendus avant même de les avoir combattus ;
Others sold all that they had left, and withal besought the Lord to deliver them, sold by the wicked Nicanor before they met together:
Sinon pour eux-mêmes, du moins à cause de l'alliance faite avec leurs pères, et parce que son nom saint et magnifique avait été invoqué sur eux.
And if not for their own sakes, yet for the covenants he had made with their fathers, and for his holy and glorious name’s sake, by which they were called.
Maccabée, ayant rassemblé ses gens au nombre de six mille, les exhortait à ne pas s'épouvanter devant les ennemis, et à ne pas craindre la multitude des nations qui venaient injustement contre eux, mais à combattre avec courage,
So Maccabeus called his men together unto the number of six thousand, and exhorted them not to be stricken with terror of the enemy, nor to fear the great multitude of the heathen, who came wrongly against them; but to fight manfully,
Ayant devant les yeux l'outrage injustement fait au lieu saint, l'oppression de la ville livrée à la risée, et la destruction des institutions de leurs ancêtres.
And to set before their eyes the injury that they had unjustly done to the holy place, and the cruel handling of the city, whereof they made a mockery, and also the taking away of the government of their forefathers:
Car, disait-il, ils se confient dans leurs armes et dans leur audace ; mais nous, nous nous confions dans le Tout-Puissant, qui peut d'un seul signe renverser ceux qui viennent contre nous et le monde entier.
For they, said he, trust in their weapons and boldness; but our confidence is in the Almighty who at a beck can cast down both them that come against us, and also all the world.
Il leur rappela aussi les secours que leurs pères avaient reçus, et comment, sous Sennachérib, cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille hommes avaient péri.
Moreover, he recounted unto them what helps their forefathers had found, and how they were delivered, when under Sennacherib an hundred fourscore and five thousand perished.
Et la bataille qui eut lieu en Babylonie contre les Galates, où huit mille hommes seulement s'étant trouvés au combat avec quatre mille Macédoniens, les Macédoniens étant dans le péril, les huit mille détruisirent cent vingt mille hommes, grâce au secours qu'ils reçurent du ciel, et en retirèrent un grand butin.
And he told them of the battle that they had in Babylon with the Galatians, how they came but eight thousand in all to the business, with four thousand Macedonians, and that the Macedonians being perplexed, the eight thousand destroyed an hundred and twenty thousand because of the help that they had from heaven, and so received a great booty.
Les ayant ainsi rendus courageux par ces discours et prêts à mourir pour les lois et pour la patrie, il divisa son armée en quatre corps.
Thus when he had made them bold with these words, and ready to die for the law and the country, he divided his army into four parts;
Il mit à la tête de chaque division ses frères, Simon, Joseph et Jonathas, donnant à chacun quinze cents hommes.
And joined with himself his own brethren, leaders of each band, to wit Simon, and Joseph, and Jonathan, giving each one fifteen hundred men.
Il ordonna aussi à Éléazar de lire le livre saint ; et ayant donné pour mot d'ordre : Le secours de Dieu, il commanda lui-même la première division.
Also he appointed Eleazar to read the holy book: and when he had given them this watchword, The help of God; himself leading the first band,
Avec l'aide du Tout-Puissant, ils tuèrent plus de neuf mille hommes, blessèrent et mutilèrent la plus grande partie de l'armée de Nicanor, et les mirent tous en fuite.
And by the help of the Almighty they slew above nine thousand of their enemies, and wounded and maimed the most part of Nicanor’s host, and so put all to flight;
Ils enlevèrent l'argent de ceux qui étaient venus pour les acheter, et ils les poursuivirent assez loin ; mais ils revinrent, pressés par le temps.
And took their money that came to buy them, and pursued them far: but lacking time they returned:
Car c'était la veille du sabbat, et c'est pourquoi ils ne continuèrent pas la poursuite.
For it was the day before the sabbath, and therefore they would no longer pursue them.
Ayant ramassé les armes des ennemis et recueilli leurs dépouilles, ils célébrèrent le sabbat, bénissant le Seigneur et lui rendant grâces de ce qu'il les avait conservés jusqu'à ce jour, où il commençait à répandre sur eux sa miséricorde.
So when they had gathered their armour together, and spoiled their enemies, they occupied themselves about the sabbath, yielding exceeding praise and thanks to the Lord, who had preserved them unto that day, which was the beginning of mercy distilling upon them.
Après le sabbat, ils distribuèrent une partie des dépouilles aux estropiés, aux veuves et aux orphelins, et partagèrent le reste entre eux et leurs enfants.
And after the sabbath, when they had given part of the spoils to the maimed, and the widows, and orphans, the residue they divided among themselves and their servants.
Cela fait, ils firent une prière commune, demandant au Seigneur miséricordieux de se réconcilier tout à fait avec ses serviteurs.
When this was done, and they had made a common supplication, they besought the merciful Lord to be reconciled with his servants for ever.
Dans les combats qu'ils eurent contre les troupes de Timothée et de Bacchide, ils tuèrent plus de vingt mille hommes et s'emparèrent facilement de forteresses élevées ; ils partagèrent un butin immense, faisant la part des estropiés, des orphelins, des veuves et des vieillards égale à la leur.
Moreover of those that were with Timotheus and Bacchides, who fought against them, they slew above twenty thousand, and very easily got high and strong holds, and divided among themselves many spoils more, and made the maimed, orphans, widows, yea, and the aged also, equal in spoils with themselves.
Ayant ramassé leurs armes, ils les déposèrent avec soin dans des lieux convenables, et portèrent le reste du butin à Jérusalem.
And when they had gathered their armour together, they laid them up all carefully in convenient places, and the remnant of the spoils they brought to Jerusalem.
Ils tuèrent aussi Philarque, cet homme scélérat qui était avec Timothée et qui avait fait beaucoup de mal aux Juifs.
They slew also Philarches, that wicked person, who was with Timotheus, and had annoyed the Jews many ways.
Tandis qu'on célébrait la victoire dans la patrie, ils brûlèrent Callisthène, qui avait mis le feu aux portes sacrées et qui s'était réfugié dans une petite maison ; il reçut ainsi le digne prix de son impiété.
Furthermore at such time as they kept the feast for the victory in their country they burnt Callisthenes, that had set fire upon the holy gates, who had fled into a little house; and so he received a reward meet for his wickedness.
Quant au très scélérat Nicanor, qui avait amené mille marchands pour l'achat des Juifs,
As for that most ungracious Nicanor, who had brought a thousand merchants to buy the Jews,
Il fut humilié, avec l'aide du Seigneur, par ceux qu'il estimait le moins ; ayant quitté ses vêtements de gloire et s'étant séparé de sa suite, il arriva seul à Antioche à travers les terres, comme un esclave fugitif, au comble de la confusion à cause de la perte de son armée.
He was through the help of the Lord brought down by them, of whom he made least account; and putting off his glorious apparel, and discharging his company, he came like a fugitive servant through the midland unto Antioch having very great dishonour, for that his host was destroyed.
Et celui qui avait promis aux Romains de payer leur tribut avec les captifs de Jérusalem, publiait maintenant que les Juifs avaient Dieu pour protecteur, et qu'ils étaient pour cette raison invulnérables, parce qu'ils suivaient les lois qu'il leur avait prescrites.
Thus he, that took upon him to make good to the Romans their tribute by means of captives in Jerusalem, told abroad, that the Jews had God to fight for them, and therefore they could not be hurt, because they followed the laws that he gave them.
Vers ce même temps, Antiochus revenait avec déshonneur des régions de la Perse.
About that time came Antiochus with dishonour out of the country of Persia
Car il était entrer dans la ville appelée Persépolis, et il avait entrepris de piller le temple et de s'emparer de la ville ; mais la multitude ayant couru aux armes, ils furent mis en fuite ; et il arriva qu'Antiochus, chassé par les habitants, s'en retourna avec honte.
For he had entered the city called Persepolis, and went about to rob the temple, and to hold the city; whereupon the multitude running to defend themselves with their weapons put them to flight; and so it happened, that Antiochus being put to flight of the inhabitants returned with shame.
Étant arrivé à Ecbatane, il apprit ce qui était arrivé à Nicanor et à Timothée.
Now when he came to Ecbatane, news was brought him what had happened unto Nicanor and Timotheus.
Transporté de fureur, il pensait rejeter sur les Juifs l'injure de ceux qui l'avaient mis en fuite ; c'est pourquoi il ordonna à son écuyer de pousser ses chevaux sans s'arrêter pour achever le voyage, tandis que le jugement du ciel le pressait. Car il avait dit avec orgueil : J'irai à Jérusalem, et j'en ferai le tombeau commun des Juifs.
Then swelling with anger. he thought to avenge upon the Jews the disgrace done unto him by those that made him flee. Therefore commanded he his chariotman to drive without ceasing, and to dispatch the journey, the judgment of God now following him. For he had spoken proudly in this sort, That he would come to Jerusalem and make it a common burying place of the Jews.
Mais le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël qui voit tout, le frappa d'une plaie incurable et invisible ; car sitôt qu'il eut fini de parler, il fut saisi d'une douleur d'entrailles sans remède et de cruels tourments intérieurs.
But the Lord Almighty, the God of Isreal, smote him with an incurable and invisible plague: or as soon as he had spoken these words, a pain of the bowels that was remediless came upon him, and sore torments of the inner parts;
Et cela très justement, car il avait lui-même tourmenté les entrailles des autres par des supplices nombreux et inouïs.
And that most justly: for he had tormented other men’s bowels with many and strange torments.
Toutefois, il ne cessait point de se glorifier, mais il était encore rempli d'orgueil, soufflant le feu dans sa rage contre les Juifs, et commandant de hâter le voyage ; mais il arriva qu'il tomba de son char, emporté violemment, de sorte qu'ayant fait une chute cruelle, tous les membres de son corps en furent fort endoloris.
Howbeit he nothing at all ceased from his bragging, but still was filled with pride, breathing out fire in his rage against the Jews, and commanding to haste the journey: but it came to pass that he fell down from his chariot, carried violently; so that having a sore fall, all the members of his body were much pained.
Et ainsi, celui qui, peu auparavant, pensait pouvoir commander aux vagues de la mer (tant il était orgueilleux au-delà de la condition humaine) et peser les hautes montagnes dans une balance, était maintenant jeté à terre et porté dans une litière, manifestant à tous la puissance évidente de Dieu.
And thus he that a little afore thought he might command the waves of the sea, (so proud was he beyond the condition of man) and weigh the high mountains in a balance, was now cast on the ground, and carried in an horselitter, shewing forth unto all the manifest power of God.
De sorte que les vers sortaient du corps de cet impie, et tandis qu'il vivait dans la douleur et les tourments, sa chair tombait en lambeaux, et l'infection de son odeur était insupportable à toute son armée.
So that the worms rose up out of the body of this wicked man, and whiles he lived in sorrow and pain, his flesh fell away, and the filthiness of his smell was noisome to all his army.
Et cet homme qui, peu auparavant, pensait pouvoir atteindre les étoiles du ciel, nul ne pouvait plus supporter de le porter à cause de son intolérable puanteur.
And the man, that thought a little afore he could reach to the stars of heaven, no man could endure to carry for his intolerable stink.
C'est alors que, tout brisé, il commença à rabattre son grand orgueil et à venir à la connaissance de lui-même sous le fléau de Dieu, sa douleur augmentant à chaque instant.
Here therefore, being plagued, he began to leave off his great pride, and to come to the knowledge of himself by the scourge of God, his pain increasing every moment.
Et quand lui-même ne put plus supporter sa propre odeur, il dit ces paroles : Il est juste d'être soumis à Dieu, et qu'un homme mortel ne s'égale pas orgueilleusement à Dieu.
And when he himself could not abide his own smell, he said these words, It is meet to be subject unto God, and that a man that is mortal should not proudly think of himself if he were God.
Cet impie fit aussi un vœu au Seigneur, qui n'aurait plus désormais pitié de lui, disant ainsi :
This wicked person vowed also unto the Lord, who now no more would have mercy upon him, saying thus,
Qu'il rendrait libre la ville sainte, vers laquelle il se hâtait pour la raser et en faire un cimetière commun ;
That the holy city (to the which he was going in haste to lay it even with the ground, and to make it a common buryingplace,) he would set at liberty:
Et quant aux Juifs, qu'il avait jugés indignes même d'être ensevelis, mais bons à être jetés avec leurs enfants pour être dévorés par les oiseaux et les bêtes sauvages, il les rendrait tous égaux aux citoyens d'Athènes ;
And as touching the Jews, whom he had judged not worthy so much as to be buried, but to be cast out with their children to be devoured of the fowls and wild beasts, he would make them all equals to the citizens of Athens:
Et le saint temple, qu'il avait auparavant pillé, il l'ornerait de magnifiques présents, et rendrait tous les vases sacrés avec beaucoup d'autres, et fournirait sur ses propres revenus aux frais des sacrifices ;
And the holy temple, which before he had spoiled, he would garnish with goodly gifts, and restore all the holy vessels with many more, and out of his own revenue defray the charges belonging to the sacrifices:
Et qu'en outre, il se ferait Juif lui-même, et parcourrait tout le monde habité pour proclamer la puissance de Dieu.
Yea, and that also he would become a Jew himself, and go through all the world that was inhabited, and declare the power of God.
Mais malgré tout cela, ses douleurs ne cessaient point, car le juste jugement de Dieu était venu sur lui ; c'est pourquoi, désespérant de sa santé, il écrivit aux Juifs la lettre ci-dessous, en forme de supplication, en ces termes :
But for all this his pains would not cease: for the just judgment of God was come upon him: therefore despairing of his health, he wrote unto the Jews the letter underwritten, containing the form of a supplication, after this manner:
Antiochus, roi et gouverneur, aux bons Juifs ses concitoyens, souhaite beaucoup de joie, santé et prospérité.
Antiochus, king and governor, to the good Jews his citizens wisheth much joy, health, and prosperity:
Si vous et vos enfants vous portez bien, et si vos affaires sont selon votre désir, je rends de très grandes grâces à Dieu, ayant mon espérance dans le ciel.
If ye and your children fare well, and your affairs be to your contentment, I give very great thanks to God, having my hope in heaven.
Quant à moi, j'étais faible, sinon je me serais souvenu avec affection de votre honneur et de votre bienveillance en revenant de Perse ; mais ayant été saisi d'une grave maladie, j'ai jugé nécessaire de veiller au salut commun de tous,
As for me, I was weak, or else I would have remembered kindly your honour and good will returning out of Persia, and being taken with a grievous disease, I thought it necessary to care for the common safety of all:
Non que je désespère de ma santé, mais ayant une grande espérance d'échapper à cette maladie.
Not distrusting mine health, but having great hope to escape this sickness.
Mais considérant que mon père lui-même, au temps où il menait une armée dans les hautes provinces, désigna un successeur,
But considering that even my father, at what time he led an army into the high countries. appointed a successor,
Afin que, s'il arrivait quelque chose contre toute attente, ou si l'on apportait quelque fâcheuse nouvelle, ceux du pays, sachant à qui l'État était laissé, ne fussent point troublés.
To the end that, if any thing fell out contrary to expectation, or if any tidings were brought that were grievous, they of the land, knowing to whom the state was left, might not be troubled:
De plus, considérant que les princes limitrophes et voisins de mon royaume guettent les occasions et attendent quel sera l'événement, j'ai désigné pour roi mon fils Antiochus, que je vous ai souvent recommandé et confié à plusieurs d'entre vous, quand je montais dans les hautes provinces ; et je lui ai écrit ce qui suit :
Again, considering how that the princes that are borderers and neighbours unto my kingdom wait for opportunities, and expect what shall be the event. I have appointed my son Antiochus king, whom I often committed and commended unto many of you, when I went up into the high provinces; to whom I have written as followeth:
C'est pourquoi je vous prie et vous demande de vous souvenir des bienfaits que je vous ai faits en général et en particulier, et que chacun demeure fidèle à moi et à mon fils.
Therefore I pray and request you to remember the benefits that I have done unto you generally, and in special, and that every man will be still faithful to me and my son.
Car je suis persuadé que, comprenant mon intention, il se montrera favorable et bienveillant à vos désirs.
For I am persuaded that he understanding my mind will favourably and graciously yield to your desires.
Ainsi ce meurtrier et blasphémateur, ayant souffert très cruellement, comme il avait traité les autres, mourut d'une mort misérable dans un pays étranger, au milieu des montagnes.
Thus the murderer and blasphemer having suffered most grievously, as he entreated other men, so died he a miserable death in a strange country in the mountains.
Et Philippe, qui avait été élevé avec lui, emporta son corps ; mais craignant le fils d'Antiochus, il se retira en Égypte auprès de Ptolémée Philométor.
And Philip, that was brought up with him, carried away his body, who also fearing the son of Antiochus went into Egypt to Ptolemeus Philometor.
Cependant, Maccabée et ceux qui étaient avec lui, le Seigneur les guidant, recouvrèrent le temple et la ville ;
Now Maccabeus and his company, the Lord guiding them, recovered the temple and the city:
Et ils renversèrent les autels que les étrangers avaient bâtis sur la place publique, ainsi que les chapelles.
But the altars which the heathen had built in the open street, and also the chapels, they pulled down.
Et après avoir purifié le temple, ils firent un autre autel, et frappant des pierres, ils en tirèrent du feu et offrirent un sacrifice après deux ans, et mirent l'encens, les lampes et les pains de proposition.
And having cleansed the temple they made another altar, and striking stones they took fire out of them, and offered a sacrifice after two years, and set forth incense, and lights, and shewbread.
Cela fait, ils se prosternèrent contre terre et supplièrent le Seigneur qu'ils ne tombassent plus dans de tels maux ; mais que, s'ils péchaient encore contre lui, il les châtiât lui-même avec clémence, et qu'ils ne fussent point livrés à des nations blasphématrices et barbares.
When that was done, they fell flat down, and besought the Lord that they might come no more into such troubles; but if they sinned any more against him, that he himself would chasten them with mercy, and that they might not be delivered unto the blasphemous and barbarous nations.
Or, le jour même où le temple avait été profané par les étrangers, ce même jour il fut purifié, le vingt-cinquième jour du même mois, qui est Casleu.
Now upon the same day that the strangers profaned the temple, on the very same day it was cleansed again, even the five and twentieth day of the same month, which is Casleu.
Et ils célébrèrent huit jours dans l'allégresse, à la manière de la fête des Tabernacles, se souvenant que peu de temps auparavant ils avaient célébré la fête des Tabernacles en errant dans les montagnes et les cavernes comme des bêtes sauvages.
And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the tabernacles, remembering that not long afore they had held the feast of the tabernacles, when as they wandered in the mountains and dens like beasts.
C'est pourquoi, portant des thyrses, des rameaux verdoyants et des palmes, ils chantaient des hymnes à celui qui leur avait donné de purifier son lieu saint.
Therefore they bare branches, and fair boughs, and palms also, and sang psalms unto him that had given them good success in cleansing his place.
Ils ordonnèrent aussi par un statut public et un décret, que toute la nation des Juifs célébrât ces jours chaque année.
They ordained also by a common statute and decree, That every year those days should be kept of the whole nation of the Jews.
Telle fut la fin d'Antiochus, appelé Épiphane.
And this was the end of Antiochus, called Epiphanes.
Nous allons maintenant rapporter les actes d'Antiochus Eupator, fils de cet impie, en résumant brièvement les malheurs des guerres.
Now will we declare the acts of Antiochus Eupator, who was the son of this wicked man, gathering briefly the calamities of the wars.
Lorsqu'il fut parvenu au trône, il mit un certain Lysias à la tête des affaires du royaume, et l'établit gouverneur général de la Célésyrie et de la Phénicie.
So when he was come to the crown, he set one Lysias over the affairs of his realm, and appointed him his chief governor of Celosyria and Phenice.
Car Ptolémée, appelé Macron, choisissant de rendre justice aux Juifs pour les torts qu'ils avaient subis, s'efforçait de maintenir la paix avec eux.
For Ptolemeus, that was called Macron, choosing rather to do justice unto the Jews for the wrong that had been done unto them, endeavoured to continue peace with them.
C'est pourquoi, étant accusé par les amis du roi devant Eupator, et s'entendant appeler traître à tout propos pour avoir abandonné Chypre que Philométor lui avait confiée, et s'être retiré auprès d'Antiochus Épiphane, voyant qu'il n'était plus dans une position honorable, il se laissa abattre et s'empoisonna, et mourut.
Whereupon being accused of the king’s friends before Eupator, and called traitor at every word because he had left Cyprus, that Philometor had committed unto him, and departed to Antiochus Epiphanes, and seeing that he was in no honourable place, he was so discouraged, that he poisoned himself and died.
Mais Gorgias, étant devenu gouverneur de ces places, levait des troupes étrangères et entretenait continuellement la guerre contre les Juifs.
But when Gorgias was governor of the holds, he hired soldiers, and nourished war continually with the Jews:
En même temps, les Iduméens, s'étant emparés de forteresses avantageuses, harcelaient les Juifs, et recevant ceux qui étaient bannis de Jérusalem, ils s'efforçaient d'entretenir la guerre.
And therewithal the Idumeans, having gotten into their hands the most commodious holds, kept the Jews occupied, and receiving those that were banished from Jerusalem, they went about to nourish war.
Alors ceux qui étaient avec Maccabée firent des supplications et prièrent Dieu d'être leur aide ; et ils se jetèrent avec violence sur les forteresses des Iduméens,
Then they that were with Maccabeus made supplication, and besought God that he would be their helper; and so they ran with violence upon the strong holds of the Idumeans,
Et les attaquant avec force, ils s'emparèrent de ces places, repoussèrent tous ceux qui combattaient sur la muraille, et égorgèrent tous ceux qui tombèrent entre leurs mains, n'en tuant pas moins de vingt mille.
And assaulting them strongly, they won the holds, and kept off all that fought upon the wall, and slew all that fell into their hands, and killed no fewer than twenty thousand.
Et parce que certains, au nombre d'au moins neuf mille, s'étaient réfugiés ensemble dans deux tours très fortes, ayant tout le nécessaire pour soutenir un siège,
And because certain, who were no less than nine thousand, were fled together into two very strong castles, having all manner of things convenient to sustain the siege,
Maccabée laissa Simon, Joseph et Zachée, avec assez de troupes pour les assiéger, et s'en alla lui-même vers les lieux qui avaient plus besoin de son secours.
Maccabeus left Simon and Joseph, and Zaccheus also, and them that were with him, who were enough to besiege them, and departed himself unto those places which more needed his help.
Mais ceux qui étaient avec Simon, étant poussés par l'avarice, se laissèrent gagner par l'argent de certains de ceux qui étaient dans les tours, et ayant reçu soixante-dix mille drachmes, ils en laissèrent échapper quelques-uns.
Now they that were with Simon, being led with covetousness, were persuaded for money through certain of those that were in the castle, and took seventy thousand drachms, and let some of them escape.
Lorsqu'on eut rapporté à Maccabée ce qui s'était passé, il assembla les chefs du peuple et accusa ces hommes d'avoir vendu leurs frères pour de l'argent, en laissant libres leurs ennemis pour combattre contre eux.
But when it was told Maccabeus what was done, he called the governors of the people together, and accused those men, that they had sold their brethren for money, and set their enemies free to fight against them.
Il fit donc mourir ceux qui furent convaincus de trahison, et s'empara aussitôt des deux tours.
So he slew those that were found traitors, and immediately took the two castles.
Et ayant du succès par ses armes dans tout ce qu'il entreprenait, il tua dans ces deux forteresses plus de vingt mille hommes.
And having good success with his weapons in all things he took in hand, he slew in the two holds more than twenty thousand.
Alors Timothée, que les Juifs avaient déjà vaincu, ayant rassemblé une multitude de forces étrangères et des chevaux d'Asie en grand nombre, s'avança comme pour prendre la Judée par la force des armes.
Now Timotheus, whom the Jews had overcome before, when he had gathered a great multitude of foreign forces, and horses out of Asia not a few, came as though he would take Jewry by force of arms.
Mais comme il approchait, ceux qui étaient avec Maccabée se mirent en prière devant Dieu, se répandant de la terre sur la tête et ceignant leurs reins de sacs,
But when he drew near, they that were with Maccabeus turned themselves to pray unto God, and sprinkled earth upon their heads, and girded their loins with sackcloth,
Et se prosternant au pied de l'autel, ils le supplièrent de leur être propice, et d'être l'ennemi de leurs ennemis et l'adversaire de leurs adversaires, comme la loi le déclare.
And fell down at the foot of the altar, and besought him to be merciful to them, and to be an enemy to their enemies, and an adversary to their adversaries, as the law declareth.
Après la prière, ils prirent leurs armes et s'avancèrent assez loin de la ville ; et quand ils furent près de leurs ennemis, ils se tinrent à l'écart.
So after the prayer they took their weapons, and went on further from the city: and when they drew near to their enemies, they kept by themselves.
Dès que le soleil fut levé, ils engagèrent le combat de part et d'autre ; les uns ayant, outre leur courage, leur refuge dans le Seigneur pour gage de leur succès et de leur victoire ; les autres prenant leur fureur pour guide de leur bataille.
Now the sun being newly risen, they joined both together; the one part having together with their virtue their refuge also unto the Lord for a pledge of their success and victory: the other side making their rage leader of their battle
Mais quand le combat devint acharné, il apparut du ciel aux ennemis cinq hommes magnifiques sur des chevaux aux freins d'or, dont deux conduisaient les Juifs,
But when the battle waxed strong, there appeared unto the enemies from heaven five comely men upon horses, with bridles of gold, and two of them led the Jews,
Et prenant Maccabée entre eux, ils le couvraient de leurs armes et le gardaient sain et sauf, mais ils lançaient des flèches et des éclairs contre les ennemis, de sorte qu'étant frappés d'aveuglement et remplis de trouble, ils furent massacrés.
And took Maccabeus betwixt them, and covered him on every side weapons, and kept him safe, but shot arrows and lightnings against the enemies: so that being confounded with blindness, and full of trouble, they were killed.
Il y eut ainsi de tués vingt mille cinq cents hommes de pied et six cents cavaliers.
And there were slain of footmen twenty thousand and five hundred, and six hundred horsemen.
Quant à Timothée lui-même, he s'enfuit dans une forteresse très forte, appelée Gazara, dont Chéréas était le gouverneur.
As for Timotheus himself, he fled into a very strong hold, called Gawra, where Chereas was governor.
Mais ceux qui étaient avec Maccabée assiégèrent courageusement la forteresse pendant quatre jours.
But they that were with Maccabeus laid siege against the fortress courageously four days.
Et ceux qui étaient dedans, se confiant dans la force du lieu, blasphémaient excessivement et proféraient des paroles impies.
And they that were within, trusting to the strength of the place, blasphemed exceedingly, and uttered wicked words.
Cependant, au point du jour du cinquième jour, vingt jeunes gens de la troupe de Maccabée, enflammés de colère à cause de ces blasphèmes, attaquèrent la muraille avec courage et, avec une ardeur farouche, tuèrent tous ceux qu'ils rencontraient.
Nevertheless upon the fifth day early twenty young men of Maccabeus’ company, inflamed with anger because of the blasphemies, assaulted the wall manly, and with a fierce courage killed all that they met withal.
D'autres aussi, montant après eux, tandis qu'ils étaient occupés avec ceux du dedans, brûlèrent les tours et, allumant des feux, brûlèrent vifs les blasphémateurs ; d'autres forcèrent les portes et, ayant reçu le reste de l'armée, prirent la ville,
Others likewise ascending after them, whiles they were busied with them that were within, burnt the towers, and kindling fires burnt the blasphemers alive; and others broke open the gates, and, having received in the rest of the army, took the city,
Et tuèrent Timothée, qui s'était caché dans une citerne, ainsi que Chéréas son frère et Apollophane.
And killed Timotheus, that was hid in a certain pit, and Chereas his brother, with Apollophanes.
Cela fait, ils louèrent le Seigneur par des hymnes et des actions de grâces, lui qui avait fait de si grandes choses pour Israël et leur avait donné la victoire.
When this was done, they praised the Lord with psalms and thanksgiving, who had done so great things for Israel, and given them the victory.
Peu de temps après, Lysias, tuteur et parent du roi, qui dirigeait aussi les affaires, fut fort mécontent de ce qui s'était passé.
Not long after the, Lysias the king’s protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.
Et ayant rassemblé environ quatre-vingt mille hommes avec toute la cavalerie, il vint contre les Juifs, pensant faire de la ville une habitation pour les Gentils,
And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,
Et tirer un profit du temple comme des autres sanctuaires des païens, et mettre la souveraine sacrificature à l'encan chaque année ;
And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:
Ne considérant nullement la puissance de Dieu, mais s'enorgueillissant de ses dizaines de milliers de fantassins, de ses milliers de cavaliers et de ses quatre-vingts éléphants.
Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.
Il vint donc en Judée et s'approcha de Bethsura, qui était une place forte, distante de Jérusalem d'environ cinq stades, et il l'assiégea vigoureusement.
So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.
Quand ceux qui étaient avec Maccabée apprirent qu'il assiégeait les forteresses, ils supplièrent le Seigneur, avec tout le peuple, par des gémissements et des larmes, d'envoyer un bon ange pour délivrer Israël.
Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.
Alors Maccabée lui-même prit les armes le premier, exhortant les autres à s'exposer avec lui pour secourir leurs frères ; et ils partirent ensemble d'un cœur joyeux.
Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.
Et comme ils étaient près de Jérusalem, il apparut devant eux, à cheval, un homme vêtu de blanc, agitant des armes d'or.
And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.
Alors ils louèrent tous ensemble le Dieu miséricordieux et reprirent courage, de sorte qu'ils étaient prêts non seulement à combattre des hommes, mais les bêtes les plus cruelles, et à percer des murs de fer.
Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.
Ils s'avancèrent donc en ordre de bataille avec leurs armes, ayant un protecteur du ciel, car le Seigneur avait eu pitié d'eux.
Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them
Et s'élançant sur leurs ennemis comme des lions, ils tuèrent onze mille hommes de pied et seize cents cavaliers, et mirent tous les autres en fuite.
And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.
Plusieurs d'entre eux aussi, étant blessés, s'échappèrent nus ; et Lysias lui-même s'enfuit honteusement et s'échappa.
Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.
Celui-ci, comme il était homme de sens, réfléchissant sur la perte qu'il avait subie et considérant que les Hébreux ne pouvaient être vaincus parce que le Dieu Tout-Puissant les aidait, envoya vers eux,
Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,
Et les persuada de consentir à toutes les conditions raisonnables, promettant qu'il persuaderait le roi qu'il devait absolument être leur ami.
And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.
Maccabée consentit à tout ce que Lysias demandait, ayant souci du bien commun ; et tout ce que Maccabée écrivit à Lysias concernant les Juifs, le roi l'accorda.
Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.
Car il y avait des lettres écrites aux Juifs par Lysias, conçues en ces termes : Lysias au peuple des Juifs, salut.
For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:
Jean et Absalom, qui ont été envoyés par vous, m'ont remis la requête soussignée et ont demandé l'exécution de ce qu'elle contenait.
John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.
C'est pourquoi, tout ce qu'il convenait de rapporter au roi, je le lui ai exposé, et il a accordé tout ce qui était possible.
Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.
Si donc vous vous maintenez fidèles à l'État, je m'efforcerai aussi à l'avenir d'être pour vous une cause de bien.
And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.
Quant aux détails, j'ai donné ordre à ceux-ci et à ceux que j'ai envoyés de conférer avec vous.
But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.

Now the king’s letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:
Depuis que notre père a été transféré parmi les dieux, notre volonté est que ceux qui sont dans notre royaume vivent en paix, afin que chacun puisse vaquer à ses propres affaires.
Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.
Nous comprenons aussi que les Juifs n'ont pas voulu consentir à notre père pour être amenés aux coutumes des Gentils, mais qu'ils aiment mieux garder leur propre genre de vie ; c'est pourquoi ils nous demandent de leur permettre de vivre selon leurs propres lois.
We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.
C'est pourquoi notre intention est que cette nation soit en repos, et nous avons résolu de leur rendre leur temple, afin qu'ils vivent selon les coutumes de leurs ancêtres.
Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.
Tu feras donc bien d'envoyer vers eux et de leur accorder la paix, afin que, lorsqu'ils seront assurés de notre intention, ils soient de bon courage et vaquent joyeusement à leurs propres affaires.
Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.
Et la lettre du roi à la nation des Juifs était ainsi conçue : Le roi Antiochus au conseil des anciens et au reste des Juifs, salut.
And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:
Si vous vous portez bien, c'est ce que nous désirons ; nous sommes aussi en bonne santé.
If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.
Ménélas nous a déclaré que votre désir était de retourner chez vous et de vaquer à vos propres affaires.
Menelaus declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:
C'est pourquoi ceux qui partiront auront un sauf-conduit jusqu'au trentième jour de Xanthique, en toute sécurité.
Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.
Et les Juifs useront de leurs propres aliments et de leurs lois, comme auparavant ; et aucun d'eux ne sera inquiété d'aucune manière pour ce qui a été fait par ignorance.
And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.
J'ai aussi envoyé Ménélas pour vous consoler.
I have sent also Menelaus, that he may comfort you.

The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.
Tout ce que Lysias, parent du roi, vous a accordé, nous l'approuvons aussi.
Whatsoever Lysias the king’s cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.
Mais quant aux choses qu'il a jugé devoir être rapportées au roi, après en avoir délibéré, envoyez quelqu'un aussitôt, afin que nous puissions exposer ce qui vous convient ; car nous allons à Antioche.
But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.
C'est pourquoi envoyez quelqu'un en hâte, afin que nous sachions quelle est votre intention.
Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.

Ces conventions étant conclues, Lysias s'en alla vers le roi, et les Juifs se livrèrent à l'agriculture.
When these covenants were made, Lysias went unto the king, and the Jews were about their husbandry.
Mais les gouverneurs de divers lieux, Timothée et Apollonius, fils de Gennée, ainsi que Hiéronyme et Démophon, et outre ceux-là Nicanor, gouverneur de Chypre, ne les laissaient pas en repos ni vivre en paix.
But of the governours of several places, Timotheus, and Apollonius the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and beside them Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to be quiet and live in peace.
Les habitants de Joppé commirent aussi une action impie : ils prièrent les Juifs qui demeuraient parmi eux de monter avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants dans des barques qu'ils avaient préparées, comme s'ils n'avaient eu aucune mauvaise intention contre eux.
The men of Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no hurt.
Ceux-ci acceptèrent, selon le décret public de la ville, comme désirant vivre en paix et ne soupçonnant rien ; mais quand ils furent en pleine mer, ils en noyèrent pas moins de deux cents.
Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city, as being desirous to live in peace, and suspecting nothing: but when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no less than two hundred of them.
Dès que Judas eut connaissance de cette cruauté exercée contre ses compatriotes, il commanda à ceux qui étaient avec lui de se tenir prêts.
When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countrymen, he commanded those that were with him to make them ready.
Et invoquant Dieu, le juste Juge, il vint contre ces meurtriers de ses frères, brûla le port pendant la nuit, mit le feu aux barques et tua ceux qui s'y étaient réfugiés.
And calling upon God the righteous Judge, he came against those murderers of his brethren, and burnt the haven by night, and set the boats on fire, and those that fled thither he slew.
Et comme la ville était fermée, il se retira, comme pour revenir afin d'exterminer tous les habitants de la ville de Joppé.
And when the town was shut up, he went backward, as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppa.
Mais ayant appris que les habitants de Jamnia voulaient agir de même envers les Juifs qui demeuraient parmi eux,
But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them,
Il tomba aussi sur les Jamnites de nuit, et mit le feu au port et à la flotte, de sorte que la lueur du feu fut vue à Jérusalem, à la distance de deux cent quarante stades.
He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set fire on the haven and the navy, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and forty furlongs off.
Lorsqu'ils se furent éloignés de là de neuf stades dans leur marche vers Timothée, au moins cinq mille hommes de pied et cinq cents cavaliers arabes l'attaquèrent.
Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.
Il y eut alors un combat très rude ; mais Judas et les siens, par l'aide de Dieu, remportèrent la victoire ; de sorte que les nomades d'Arabie, étant vaincus, demandèrent la paix à Judas, promettant de lui donner du bétail et de lui être utiles par ailleurs.
Whereupon there was a very sore battle; but Judas’ side by the help of God got the victory; so that the Nomades of Arabia, being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising both to give him cattle, and to pleasure him otherwise.
Judas, pensant en effet qu'ils lui seraient utiles en beaucoup de choses, leur accorda la paix ; après quoi ils se donnèrent la main et se retirèrent dans leurs tentes.
Then Judas, thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things, granted them peace: whereupon they shook hands, and so they departed to their tents.
Il entreprit aussi d'attaquer une certaine ville forte, fermée de murs et habitée par des gens de diverses nations, dont le nom était Caspis.
He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city, which was fenced about with walls, and inhabited by people of divers countries; and the name of it was Caspis.
Mais ceux qui étaient dedans mettaient une telle confiance dans la force des murs et dans leurs provisions de vivres, qu'ils se comportèrent insolemment envers ceux qui étaient avec Judas, les injuriant, blasphémant et proférant des paroles qu'il n'est pas permis de dire.
But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals, that they behaved themselves rudely toward them that were with Judas, railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.
C'est pourquoi Judas et sa troupe, invoquant le grand Seigneur du monde, qui sans béliers ni machines de guerre renversa Jéricho au temps de Josué, donnèrent un assaut furieux contre les murs,
Wherefore Judas with his company, calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without rams or engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua, gave a fierce assault against the walls,
Et prirent la ville par la volonté de Dieu, et y firent un carnage indicible, au point qu'un lac voisin, large de deux stades, paraissait rempli du sang qui y coulait.
And took the city by the will of God, and made unspeakable slaughters, insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoining thereunto, being filled full, was seen running with blood.
De là, ils s'éloignèrent de sept cent cinquante stades et vinrent à Characa, vers les Juifs qu'on appelle Tubiéniens.
Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni.
Mais quant à Timothée, ils ne le trouvèrent point en ces lieux ; car avant d'avoir rien terminé, il était parti de là, ayant laissé une très forte garnison dans une certaine forteresse.
But as for Timotheus, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched any thing, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.
Toutefois Dositheus et Sosipater, qui étaient des capitaines de Maccabée, sortirent et tuèrent ceux que Timothée avait laissés dans la forteresse, plus de dix mille hommes.
Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus’ captains, went forth, and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.
Et Maccabée rangea son armée par cohortes, les mit à la tête des cohortes et marcha contre Timothée, qui avait avec lui environ cent vingt mille hommes de pied et deux mille cinq cents cavaliers.
And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.
Quand Timothée eut connaissance de la venue de Judas, il envoya les femmes, les enfants et le reste du bagage dans une forteresse appelée Carnion ; car la place était difficile à assiéger et d'un accès malaisé, à cause de l'étroitesse de tous les passages.
Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas’ coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.
Mais dès que la première cohorte de Judas parut, la crainte et la terreur s'emparèrent des ennemis par l'apparition de celui qui voit tout, et ils s'enfuirent en hâte, l'un courant d'un côté, l'autre d'un autre, de sorte qu'ils étaient souvent blessés par leurs propres gens et percés par la pointe de leurs propres épées.
But when Judas his first band came in sight, the enemies, being smitten with fear and terror through the appearing of him who seeth all things, fled amain, one running into this way, another that way, so as that they were often hurt of their own men, and wounded with the points of their own swords.
Judas les poursuivit aussi avec beaucoup d'ardeur, tuant ces misérables, dont il égorgea environ trente mille hommes.
Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them, killing those wicked wretches, of whom he slew about thirty thousand men.
De plus, Timothée lui-même tomba entre les mains de Dositheus et de Sosipater, qu'il supplia avec beaucoup de ruse de le laisser aller sain et sauf, parce qu'il avait entre ses mains les parents de plusieurs Juifs et les frères de quelques-uns, qui ne seraient point épargnés s'il était mis à mort.
Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater, whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life, because he had many of the Jews’ parents, and the brethren of some of them, who, if they put him to death, should not be regarded.
Lorsqu'il les eut assurés par beaucoup de paroles qu'il les rendrait sans dommage, selon la convention, ils le laissèrent aller pour le salut de leurs frères.
So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt, according to the agreement, they let him go for the saving of their brethren.
Ensuite Maccabée marcha vers Carnion et vers le temple d'Atargatis, et il y tua vingt-cinq mille personnes.
Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion, and to the temple of Atargatis, and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons.
Et après qu'il les eut mis en fuite et détruits, Judas tourna son armée vers Éphron, ville forte où demeurait Lysias avec une grande multitude de diverses nations ; et de vaillants jeunes gens gardaient les murailles et les défendaient avec force ; il y avait aussi là de grandes provisions de machines et de traits.
And after he had put to flight and destroyed them, Judas removed the host toward Ephron, a strong city, wherein Lysias abode, and a great multitude of divers nations, and the strong young men kept the walls, and defended them mightily: wherein also was great provision of engines and darts.
Mais Judas et sa troupe, ayant invoqué le Dieu Tout-Puissant qui brise par sa puissance la force de ses ennemis, s'emparèrent de la ville et tuèrent vingt-cinq mille de ceux qui étaient dedans.
But when Judas and his company had called upon Almighty God, who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies, they won the city, and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within,
De là, ils partirent pour Scythopolis, qui est distante de Jérusalem de six cents stades.
From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem,
Mais comme les Juifs qui y demeuraient témoignèrent que les habitants de Scythopolis en avaient usé avec bonté envers eux, et les avaient traités avec bienveillance au temps de leur adversité ;
But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them, and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity;
Ils leur rendirent grâces, les priant de leur être toujours favorables ; et ils vinrent à Jérusalem, la fête des Semaines approchant.
They gave them thanks, desiring them to be friendly still unto them: and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks approaching.
Et après la fête appelée Pentecôte, ils marchèrent contre Gorgias, gouverneur de l'Idumée,
And after the feast, called Pentecost, they went forth against Gorgias the governor of Idumea,
Qui sortit avec trois mille hommes de pied et quatre cents cavaliers.
Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred horsemen.
Et il arriva que, dans le combat, quelques Juifs furent tués.
And it happened that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain.
En ce temps-là, Dositheus, l'un de la troupe de Bacénor, qui était à cheval et homme vigoureux, s'attachait à Gorgias et, le saisissant par son manteau, le tirait avec force ; et comme il voulait prendre vivant ce maudit homme, un cavalier thrace se jeta sur lui et lui coupa l'épaule, de sorte que Gorgias s'enfuit à Marisa.
At which time Dositheus, one of Bacenor’s company, who was on horseback, and a strong man, was still upon Gorgias, and taking hold of his coat drew him by force; and when he would have taken that cursed man alive, a horseman of Thracia coming upon him smote off his shoulder, so that Gorgias fled unto Marisa.
Or, comme ceux qui étaient avec Gorgias combattaient depuis longtemps et étaient fatigués, Judas invoqua le Seigneur, afin qu'il se montrât leur aide et le conducteur de la bataille.
Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord, that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battle.
Et aussitôt, commençant dans sa propre langue, il chanta des psaumes à haute voix et, se jetant à l'improviste sur les gens de Gorgias, il les mit en fuite.
And with that he began in his own language, and sung psalms with a loud voice, and rushing unawares upon Gorgias’ men, he put them to flight.
Alors Judas rassembla son armée et vint dans la ville d'Odollam. Et le septième jour étant venu, ils se purifièrent selon la coutume et célébrèrent le sabbat en ce même lieu.
So Judas gathered his host, and came into the city of Odollam, And when the seventh day came, they purified themselves, as the custom was, and kept the sabbath in the same place.
Le jour suivant, comme la coutume l'exigeait, Judas et sa troupe vinrent pour enlever les corps de ceux qui avaient été tués, et pour les ensevelir avec leurs parents dans les sépulcres de leurs pères.
And upon the day following, as the use had been, Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers’ graves.
Or, ils trouvèrent sous les tuniques de chacun des morts des objets consacrés aux idoles de Jamnia, ce qui est défendu aux Juifs par la loi. Alors tous virent que c'était là la cause pour laquelle ils avaient été tués.
Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites, which is forbidden the Jews by the law. Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain.
Tous donc, bénissant le Seigneur, le juste Juge, qui avait manifesté les choses cachées,
All men therefore praising the Lord, the righteous Judge, who had opened the things that were hid,
Se mirent en prière et le supplièrent que le péché commis fût entièrement mis en oubli. De plus, le noble Judas exhorta le peuple à se garder du péché, voyant devant leurs yeux ce qui était arrivé pour les péchés de ceux qui avaient été tués.
Betook themselves unto prayer, and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance. Besides, that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain.
Et après avoir fait une collecte dans toute la troupe jusqu'à la somme de deux mille drachmes d'argent, il l'envoya à Jérusalem pour offrir un sacrifice pour le péché, agissant en cela fort bien et honnêtement, car il pensait à la résurrection ;
And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachms of silver, he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering, doing therein very well and honestly, in that he was mindful of the resurrection:
Car s'il n'avait pas espéré que ceux qui avaient été tués ressusciteraient, il eût été superflu et vain de prier pour les morts.
For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead.
Et aussi parce qu'il considérait qu'une grande grâce est réservée à ceux qui meurent pieusement, c'était une sainte et bonne pensée. C'est pourquoi il fit faire une expiation pour les morts, afin qu'ils fussent délivrés du péché.
And also in that he perceived that there was great favour laid up for those that died godly, it was an holy and good thought. Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.
L'an cent quarante-neuf, on rapporta à Judas qu'Antiochus Eupator venait avec une grande puissance en Judée,
In the hundred forty and ninth year it was told Judas, that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea,
Et avec lui Lysias son tuteur et le chef de ses affaires, ayant chacun une armée grecque composée de cent dix mille hommes de pied, cinq mille trois cents cavaliers, vingt-deux éléphants et trois cents chars armés de faux.
And with him Lysias his protector, and ruler of his affairs, having either of them a Grecian power of footmen, an hundred and ten thousand, and horsemen five thousand and three hundred, and elephants two and twenty, and three hundred chariots armed with hooks.
Ménélas se joignit aussi à eux et, avec une grande dissimulation, encourageait Antiochus, non pour le salut du pays, mais parce qu'il pensait être établi gouverneur.
Menelaus also joined himself with them, and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus, not for the safeguard of the country, but because he thought to have been made governor.
Mais le Roi des rois excita l'esprit d'Antiochus contre ce misérable, et Lysias informa le roi que cet homme était la cause de tous les maux, de sorte que le roi commanda de le mener à Bérée et de le faire mourir, selon la coutume de ce lieu.
But the King of kings moved Antiochus’ mind against this wicked wretch, and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief, so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea, and to put him to death, as the manner is in that place.
Or, il y avait en ce lieu une tour de cinquante coudées de haut, pleine de cendres, et elle avait un instrument circulaire qui de tous côtés descendait dans les cendres.
Now there was in that place a tower of fifty cubits high, full of ashes, and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes.
Et quiconque était condamné pour sacrilège, ou avait commis quelque autre crime atroce, on l'y précipitait pour qu'il y mourût.
And whosoever was condemned of sacrilege, or had committed any other grievous crime, there did all men thrust him unto death.
C'est d'une telle mort qu'il arriva que cet impie mourut, n'ayant même pas de sépulture en terre ; et cela très justement :
Such a death it happened that wicked man to die, not having so much as burial in the earth; and that most justly:
Car, comme il avait commis beaucoup de péchés contre l'autel, dont le feu et la cendre étaient saints, il reçut la mort dans la cendre.
For inasmuch as he had committed many sins about the altar, whose fire and ashes were holy, he received his death in ashes.
Cependant le roi venait avec un esprit barbare et hautain, pour traiter les Juifs bien plus mal qu'ils ne l'avaient été du temps de son père.
Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty mind to do far worse to the Jews, than had been done in his father’s time.
Ce que Judas ayant appris, il commanda à la multitude d'invoquer le Seigneur jour et nuit, afin que, si jamais il les avait aidés, il le fît encore maintenant, lorsqu'ils étaient sur le point d'être privés de leur loi, de leur patrie et du saint temple ;
Which things when Judas perceived, he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day, that if ever at any other time, he would now also help them, being at the point to be put from their law, from their country, and from the holy temple:
Et qu'il ne permît pas que le peuple, qui venait à peine de respirer un peu, fût assujetti à des nations blasphématrices.
And that he would not suffer the people, that had even now been but a little refreshed, to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations.
Lorsqu'ils eurent tous fait cela ensemble, et supplié le Seigneur miséricordieux avec larmes et jeûnes, se prosternant contre terre pendant trois jours, Judas, les ayant exhortés, leur commanda de se tenir prêts.
So when they had all done this together, and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting, and lying flat upon the ground three days long, Judas, having exhorted them, commanded they should be in a readiness.
Et Judas, s'étant entretenu à part avec les anciens, résolut, avant que l'armée du roi n'entrât en Judée et ne s'emparât de la ville, de sortir et de décider l'affaire par un combat avec l'aide du Seigneur.
And Judas, being apart with the elders, determined, before the king’s host should enter into Judea, and get the city, to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord.
Ayant donc tout remis au Créateur du monde, et exhorté ses soldats à combattre vaillamment jusqu'à la mort pour les lois, le temple, la ville, la patrie et l'État, il campa près de Modin ;
So when he had committed all to the Creator of the world, and exhorted his soldiers to fight manfully, even unto death, for the laws, the temple, the city, the country, and the commonwealth, he camped by Modin:
Et ayant donné le mot d'ordre à ceux qui étaient avec lui : La victoire est à Dieu ; avec les jeunes gens les plus vaillants et d'élite, il entra de nuit dans la tente du roi et tua dans le camp environ quatre mille hommes, et le plus grand des éléphants avec tout ce qui était sur lui.
And having given the watchword to them that were about him, Victory is of God; with the most valiant and choice young men he went in into the king’s tent by night, and slew in the camp about four thousand men, and the chiefest of the elephants, with all that were upon him.
Enfin ils remplirent le camp de crainte et de tumulte, et se retirèrent avec succès.
And at last they filled the camp with fear and tumult, and departed with good success.
Cela se fit à la pointe du jour, parce que la protection du Seigneur l'aidait.
This was done in the break of the day, because the protection of the Lord did help him.
Or, le roi ayant eu un échantillon de la valeur des Juifs, essaya de prendre les forteresses par ruse,
Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews, he went about to take the holds by policy,
Et marcha vers Bethsura, qui était une place forte des Juifs ; mais il fut mis en fuite, échoua et perdit de ses gens ;
And marched toward Bethsura, which was a strong hold of the Jews: but he was put to flight, failed, and lost of his men:
Car Judas avait fait passer à ceux qui y étaient tout ce qui leur était nécessaire.
For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary.
Mais Rhodocus, qui était dans l'armée des Juifs, révéla les secrets aux ennemis ; c'est pourquoi on le rechercha, et l'ayant pris, on le mit en prison.
But Rhodocus, who was in the Jews’ host, disclosed the secrets to the enemies; therefore he was sought out, and when they had gotten him, they put him in prison.
Le roi traita avec eux à Bethsura pour la seconde fois, donna sa main, reçut la leur, se retira, combattit Judas, fut vaincu ;
The king treated with them in Bethsum the second time, gave his hand, took their’s, departed, fought with Judas, was overcome;
Apprit que Philippe, qui avait été laissé à la tête des affaires à Antioche, s'était révolté, en fut consterné, supplia les Juifs, se soumit et jura de respecter toutes les conditions justes, fit accord avec eux et offrit un sacrifice, honora le temple et traita favorablement le lieu saint,
Heard that Philip, who was left over the affairs in Antioch, was desperately bent, confounded, intreated the Jews, submitted himself, and sware to all equal conditions, agreed with them, and offered sacrifice, honoured the temple, and dealt kindly with the place,
Et fit bon accueil à Maccabée, l'établit gouverneur principal depuis Ptolémaïs jusqu'aux Gherréniens ;
And accepted well of Maccabeus, made him principal governor from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians;
Vint à Ptolémaïs ; les habitants de cette ville furent mécontents de ces conventions, car ils s'indignaient et voulaient annuler les accords ;
Came to Ptolemais: the people there were grieved for the covenants; for they stormed, because they would make their covenants void:
Lysias monta sur le tribunal, parla autant qu'il put pour défendre la cause, les persuada, les apaisa, les rendit bien disposés et revint à Antioche. Voilà comment se passèrent la venue et le départ du roi.
Lysias went up to the judgment seat, said as much as could be in defence of the cause, persuaded, pacified, made them well affected, returned to Antioch. Thus it went touching the king’s coming and departing.
Trois ans après, Judas fut informé que Démétrius, fils de Séleucus, étant entré par le port de Tripolis avec une grande puissance et une flotte,
After three years was Judas informed, that Demetrius the son of Seleucus, having entered by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy,
S'était emparé du pays et avait tué Antiochus et Lysias son tuteur.
Had taken the country, and killed Antiochus, and Lysias his protector.
Or, un certain Alcime, qui avait été souverain sacrificateur et s'était souillé volontairement au temps de leur mélange avec les Gentils, voyant qu'il n'y avait pour lui aucun moyen de salut, ni plus d'accès au saint autel,
Now one Alcimus, who had been high priest, and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles, seeing that by no means he could save himself, nor have any more access to the holy altar,
Vint au roi Démétrius, l'an cent cinquante et un, lui présentant une couronne d'or et une palme, et aussi des rameaux qui servaient solennellement dans le temple ; et ce jour-là il se tut.
Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year, presenting unto him a crown of gold, and a palm, and also of the boughs which were used solemnly in the temple: and so that day he held his peace.
Cependant, ayant trouvé l'occasion de favoriser sa folle entreprise, et étant appelé au conseil par Démétrius, et interrogé sur les dispositions des Juifs et sur ce qu'ils projetaient, il répondit ainsi :
Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprize, and being called into counsel by Demetrius, and asked how the Jews stood affected, and what they intended, he answered thereunto:
Ceux des Juifs qu'on appelle Assidéens, dont Judas Maccabée est le chef, entretiennent la guerre et sont séditieux, et ne laissent pas le reste en paix.
Those of the Jews that he called Assideans, whose captain is Judas Maccabeus, nourish war and are seditious, and will not let the rest be in peace.
C'est pourquoi moi, ayant été privé de l'honneur de mes ancêtres, je veux dire de la souveraine sacrificature, je suis maintenant venu ici :
Therefore I, being deprived of mine ancestors’ honour, I mean the high priesthood, am now come hither:
Premièrement, à la vérité, pour le soin sincère que j'ai des intérêts du roi ; et secondement, parce que je vise au bien de mes propres concitoyens ; car toute notre nation est dans une grande misère par l'imprudence de ceux que j'ai nommés.
First, verily for the unfeigned care I have of things pertaining to the king; and secondly, even for that I intend the good of mine own countrymen: for all our nation is in no small misery through the unadvised dealing of them aforesaid.
C'est pourquoi, ô roi, puisque tu connais toutes ces choses, veille sur le pays et sur notre nation, qui est pressée de toutes parts, selon la clémence que tu témoignes volontiers à tous.
Wherefore, O king, seeing knowest all these things, be careful for the country, and our nation, which is pressed on every side, according to the clemency that thou readily shewest unto all.
Car tant que Judas vivra, il n'est pas possible que l'État soit en repos.
For as long as Judas liveth, it is not possible that the state should be quiet.
À peine eut-il dit ces paroles, que d'autres amis du roi, animés de malveillance contre Judas, excitèrent encore plus Démétrius.
This was no sooner spoken of him, but others of the king’s friends, being maliciously set against Judas, did more incense Demetrius.
Et aussitôt, appelant Nicanor, qui avait été maître des éléphants, et l'établissant gouverneur de la Judée, il l'envoya,
And forthwith calling Nicanor, who had been master of the elephants, and making him governor over Judea, he sent him forth,
Lui commandant de tuer Judas, de disperser ceux qui étaient avec lui, et d'établir Alcime souverain sacrificateur du grand temple.
Commanding him to slay Judas, and to scatter them that were with him, and to make Alcimus high priest of the great temple.
Alors les païens qui avaient fui la Judée devant Judas, vinrent en foule vers Nicanor, pensant que les malheurs et les calamités des Juifs feraient leur bonheur.
Then the heathen, that had fled out of Judea from Judas, came to Nicanor by flocks, thinking the harm and calamities of the Jews to be their welfare.
Quand les Juifs apprirent la venue de Nicanor et que les païens s'étaient levés contre eux, ils se répandirent de la terre sur la tête et firent des supplications à celui qui avait établi son peuple pour toujours, et qui aide toujours sa portion par la manifestation de sa présence.
Now when the Jews heard of Nicanor’s coming, and that the heathen were up against them, they cast earth upon their heads, and made supplication to him that had established his people for ever, and who always helpeth his portion with manifestation of his presence.
Ainsi, sur l'ordre du chef, ils partirent aussitôt de là et s'approchèrent d'eux au bourg de Dessau.
So at the commandment of the captain they removed straightways from thence, and came near unto them at the town of Dessau.
Or Simon, frère de Judas, avait engagé le combat contre Nicanor, mais il fut un peu déconcerté par le silence soudain de ses ennemis.
Now Simon, Judas’ brother, had joined battle with Nicanor, but was somewhat discomfited through the sudden silence of his enemies.
Néanmoins Nicanor, ayant appris la valeur de ceux qui étaient avec Judas, et le courage qu'ils avaient de combattre pour leur patrie, n'osa point décider l'affaire par l'épée.
Nevertheless Nicanor, hearing of the manliness of them that were with Judas, and the courageousness that they had to fight for their country, durst not try the matter by the sword.
C'est pourquoi il envoya Posidonius, Théodote et Mattathias pour faire la paix.
Wherefore he sent Posidonius, and Theodotus, and Mattathias, to make peace.
Après qu'ils eurent longtemps délibéré sur ce point, et que le chef en eut fait part à la multitude, et qu'il parut qu'ils étaient tous d'un même avis, ils consentirent aux conventions,
So when they had taken long advisement thereupon, and the captain had made the multitude acquainted therewith, and it appeared that they were all of one mind, they consented to the covenants,
Et fixèrent un jour pour se réunir ensemble en particulier ; et quand le jour fut venu, et que des sièges eurent été placés pour chacun d'eux,
And appointed a day to meet in together by themselves: and when the day came, and stools were set for either of them,
Judas plaça des hommes armés tout prêts dans des lieux convenables, de peur que quelque trahison ne fût soudainement exercée par les ennemis ; ils eurent ainsi une conférence pacifique.
Ludas placed armed men ready in convenient places, lest some treachery should be suddenly practised by the enemies: so they made a peaceable conference.
Nicanor demeura à Jérusalem et ne fit aucun mal, mais il renvoya les gens qui étaient venus vers lui en foule.
Now Nicanor abode in Jerusalem, and did no hurt, but sent away the people that came flocking unto him.
Et il ne voulait pas volontiers perdre Judas de vue, car il aimait cet homme du fond du cœur.
And he would not willingly have Judas out of his sight: for he love the man from his heart
Il le pria aussi de prendre femme et d'engendrer des enfants ; il se maria donc, vécut tranquille et prit part à cette vie.
He prayed him also to take a wife, and to beget children: so he married, was quiet, and took part of this life.
Mais Alcime, s'apercevant de l'affection qu'il y avait entre eux, et considérant les conventions qui avaient été faites, vint vers Démétrius et lui dit que Nicanor n'était pas bien disposé pour l'État, car il avait désigné Judas, traître à son royaume, pour être le successeur du roi.
But Alcimus, perceiving the love that was betwixt them, and considering the covenants that were made, came to Demetrius, and told him that Nicanor was not well affected toward the state; for that he had ordained Judas, a traitor to his realm, to be the king’s successor.
Alors le roi, étant en colère et provoqué par les accusations de ce très méchant homme, écrivit à Nicanor, lui signifiant qu'il était fort mécontent des conventions, et lui commandant d'envoyer en toute hâte Maccabée prisonnier à Antioche.
Then the king being in a rage, and provoked with the accusations of the most wicked man, wrote to Nicanor, signifying that he was much displeased with the covenants, and commanding him that he should send Maccabeus prisoner in all haste unto Antioch.
Quand cela vint à la connaissance de Nicanor, il fut fort troublé en lui-même, et il lui en coûtait d'annuler les articles qui avaient été convenus, l'homme n'étant en aucune faute.
When this came to Nicanor’s hearing, he was much confounded in himself, and took it grievously that he should make void the articles which were agreed upon, the man being in no fault.
Mais parce qu'il n'y avait pas moyen de s'opposer au roi, il épia le moment d'accomplir cette chose par ruse.
But because there was no dealing against the king, he watched his time to accomplish this thing by policy.
Néanmoins, quand Maccabée vit que Nicanor commençait à être rude envers lui, et qu'il le traitait plus durement qu'il n'en avait coutume, comprenant qu'un tel comportement n'augurait rien de bon, il rassembla un bon nombre de ses gens et se retira de Nicanor.
Notwithstanding, when Maccabeus saw that Nicanor began to be churlish unto him, and that he entreated him more roughly than he was wont, perceiving that such sour behaviour came not of good, he gathered together not a few of his men, and withdrew himself from Nicanor.
Mais l'autre, sachant qu'il avait été habilement prévenu par la ruse de Judas, vint dans le grand et saint temple, et commanda aux sacrificateurs qui offraient les sacrifices accoutumés de lui livrer cet homme.
But the other, knowing that he was notably prevented by Judas’ policy, came into the great and holy temple, and commanded the priests, that were offering their usual sacrifices, to deliver him the man.
Et comme ils juraient qu'ils ne savaient pas où était l'homme qu'il cherchait,
And when they sware that they could not tell where the man was whom he sought,
Il étendit sa main droite vers le temple et fit un serment en ces termes : Si vous ne me livrez pas Judas prisonnier, je raserai ce temple de Dieu, je renverserai l'autel et j'élèverai un temple magnifique à Bacchus.
He stretched out his right hand toward the temple, and made an oath in this manner: If ye will not deliver me Judas as a prisoner, I will lay this temple of God even with the ground, and I will break down the altar, and erect a notable temple unto Bacchus.
Après ces paroles, il se retira. Alors les sacrificateurs levèrent leurs mains vers le ciel et supplièrent celui qui avait toujours été le défenseur de leur nation, disant ainsi :
After these words he departed. Then the priests lifted up their hands toward heaven, and besought him that was ever a defender of their nation, saying in this manner;
Toi, Seigneur de toutes choses, qui n'as besoin de rien, tu as voulu que le temple de ton habitation fût au milieu de nous ;
Thou, O Lord of all things, who hast need of nothing, wast pleased that the temple of thine habitation should be among us:
C'est pourquoi maintenant, ô Seigneur saint de toute sainteté, garde à jamais sans souillure cette maison qui a été purifiée depuis peu, et ferme toute bouche injuste.
Therefore now, O holy Lord of all holiness, keep this house ever undefiled, which lately was cleansed, and stop every unrighteous mouth.
Or, on accusa devant Nicanor un certain Razis, l'un des anciens de Jérusalem, ami de ses concitoyens et homme de très bonne renommée, qui pour sa bonté était appelé le père des Juifs.
Now was there accused unto Nicanor one Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, a lover of his countrymen, and a man of very good report, who for his kindness was called a father of the Jews.
Car, dans les temps précédents, lorsqu'ils ne se mêlaient point aux Gentils, il avait été accusé de judaïsme, et il avait exposé son corps et sa vie avec toute ardeur pour la religion des Juifs.
For in the former times, when they mingled not themselves with the Gentiles, he had been accused of Judaism, and did boldly jeopard his body and life with all vehemency for the religion of the Jews.
Nicanor donc, voulant manifester la haine qu'il portait aux Juifs, envoya plus de cinq cents hommes de guerre pour le prendre ;
So Nicanor, willing to declare the hate that he bare unto the Jews, sent above five hundred men of war to take him:
Car il pensait qu'en le prenant, il ferait un grand tort aux Juifs.
For he thought by taking him to do the Jews much hurt.
Mais quand la multitude fut sur le point de prendre la tour et de forcer la porte extérieure, et qu'on ordonna d'apporter du feu pour la brûler, lui, étant sur le point d'être pris de toutes parts, se jeta sur son épée ;
Now when the multitude would have taken the tower, and violently broken into the outer door, and bade that fire should be brought to burn it, he being ready to be taken on every side fell upon his sword;
Aimant mieux mourir vaillamment que de tomber entre les mains de ces méchants, pour être outragé d'une manière indigne de sa noble naissance ;
Choosing rather to die manfully, than to come into the hands of the wicked, to be abused otherwise than beseemed his noble birth:
Mais ayant manqué son coup par la précipitation, et la multitude se précipitant à l'intérieur des portes, il courut hardiment sur la muraille et se jeta courageusement au milieu d'eux.
But missing his stroke through haste, the multitude also rushing within the doors, he ran boldly up to the wall, and cast himself down manfully among the thickest of them.
Mais ceux-ci s'étant vite retirés et un espace s'étant formé, il tomba au milieu de la place vide.
But they quickly giving back, and a space being made, he fell down into the midst of the void place.
Néanmoins, ayant encore du souffle en lui, enflammé de colère, il se leva ; et bien que son sang jaillît comme des sources d'eau et que ses blessures fussent graves, il courut à travers la foule ; et se tenant sur un rocher escarpé,
Nevertheless, while there was yet breath within him, being inflamed with anger, he rose up; and though his blood gushed out like spouts of water, and his wounds were grievous, yet he ran through the midst of the throng; and standing upon a steep rock,
Quand son sang fut presque tout épuisé, il s'arracha les entrailles et, les prenant à deux mains, il les jeta sur la foule ; et invoquant le Seigneur de la vie et de l'esprit pour qu'il les lui rendît un jour, il mourut ainsi.
When as his blood was now quite gone, he plucked out his bowels, and taking them in both his hands, he cast them upon the throng, and calling upon the Lord of life and spirit to restore him those again, he thus died.
Mais Nicanor, ayant appris que Judas et sa troupe étaient dans les lieux forts de la Samarie, résolut de les attaquer sans aucun danger le jour du sabbat.
But Nicanor, hearing that Judas and his company were in the strong places about Samaria, resolved without any danger to set upon them on the sabbath day.
Néanmoins les Juifs qui étaient contraints de le suivre disaient : Ô ne détruis pas si cruellement et si barbarement, mais rends honneur à ce jour que celui qui voit tout a honoré par la sainteté au-dessus de tous les autres jours.
Nevertheless the Jews that were compelled to go with him said, O destroy not so cruelly and barbarously, but give honour to that day, which he, that seeth all things, hath honoured with holiness above all other days.
Alors ce très méchant homme demanda s'il y avait un Puissant dans le ciel qui eût commandé de garder le jour du sabbat.
Then the most ungracious wretch demanded, if there were a Mighty one in heaven, that had commanded the sabbath day to be kept.
Et comme ils disaient : Il y a dans le ciel un Seigneur vivant et puissant, qui a commandé de garder le septième jour ;
And when they said, There is in heaven a living Lord, and mighty, who commanded the seventh day to be kept:
L'autre répondit : Et moi aussi je suis puissant sur la terre, et je commande de prendre les armes et de faire les affaires du roi. Cependant il ne put accomplir son dessein impie.
Then said the other, And I also am mighty upon earth, and I command to take arms, and to do the king’s business. Yet he obtained not to have his wicked will done.
Ainsi Nicanor, dans un orgueil et une hauteur extrêmes, résolut d'élever un monument public de sa victoire sur Judas et sur ceux qui étaient avec lui.
So Nicanor in exceeding pride and haughtiness determined to set up a publick monument of his victory over Judas and them that were with him.
Mais Maccabée avait toujours une ferme confiance que le Seigneur l'aiderait ;
But Maccabeus had ever sure confidence that the Lord would help him:
C'est pourquoi il exhortait son peuple à ne pas craindre la venue des païens contre eux, mais à se souvenir du secours qu'ils avaient reçu du ciel autrefois, et à attendre maintenant la victoire et l'aide qui leur viendraient du Tout-Puissant.
Wherefore he exhorted his people not to fear the coming of the heathen against them, but to remember the help which in former times they had received from heaven, and now to expect the victory and aid, which should come unto them from the Almighty.
Et les consolant ainsi par la loi et les prophètes, et leur rappelant aussi les batailles qu'ils avaient gagnées auparavant, il les rendit plus joyeux.
And so comforting them out of the law and the prophets, and withal putting them in mind of the battles that they won afore, he made them more cheerful.
Et après avoir ranimé leurs esprits, il leur donna ses ordres, leur montrant en même temps la perfidie des païens et la violation de leurs serments.
And when he had stirred up their minds, he gave them their charge, shewing them therewithal the falsehood of the heathen, and the breach of oaths.
Il arma ainsi chacun d'eux, non pas tant par la défense des boucliers et des lances que par de bonnes et consolantes paroles ; et de plus, il leur raconta un songe digne de foi, comme s'il eût été vrai, ce qui ne les réjouit pas peu.
Thus he armed every one of them, not so much with defence of shields and spears, as with comfortable and good words: and beside that, he told them a dream worthy to be believed, as if it had been so indeed, which did not a little rejoice them.
Et voici quelle fut sa vision : Onias, qui avait été souverain sacrificateur, homme vertueux et bon, vénérable dans son commerce, doux dans son caractère, éloquent aussi, et exercé dès l'enfance dans tous les points de la vertu, les mains levées, priait pour tout le peuple des Juifs.
And this was his vision: That Onias, who had been high priest, a virtuous and a good man, reverend in conversation, gentle in condition, well spoken also, and exercised from a child in all points of virtue, holding up his hands prayed for the whole body of the Jews.
Après cela, il apparut de même un homme aux cheveux blancs et d'une gloire éclatante, qui était d'une majesté merveilleuse et excellente.
This done, in like manner there appeared a man with gray hairs, and exceeding glorious, who was of a wonderful and excellent majesty.
Alors Onias répondit, disant : Voici celui qui aime ses frères, qui prie beaucoup pour le peuple et pour la ville sainte, savoir Jérémie, le prophète de Dieu.
Then Onias answered, saying, This is a lover of the brethren, who prayeth much for the people, and for the holy city, to wit, Jeremias the prophet of God.
Sur quoi Jérémie, étendant sa main droite, donna à Judas une épée d'or et, en la lui donnant, il parla ainsi :
Whereupon Jeremias holding forth his right hand gave to Judas a sword of gold, and in giving it spake thus,
Prends cette épée sainte, présent de Dieu, avec laquelle tu blesseras les adversaires.
Take this holy sword, a gift from God, with the which thou shalt wound the adversaries.
Étant ainsi fortifiés par les paroles de Judas, qui étaient très bonnes et capables de les exciter à la valeur et d'encourager le cœur des jeunes gens, ils résolurent de ne pas camper, mais de se jeter courageusement sur eux et de décider l'affaire vaillamment par un combat, parce que la ville, le sanctuaire et le temple étaient en danger.
Thus being well comforted by the words of Judas, which were very good, and able to stir them up to valour, and to encourage the hearts of the young men, they determined not to pitch camp, but courageously to set upon them, and manfully to try the matter by conflict, because the city and the sanctuary and the temple were in danger.
Car le souci qu'ils avaient pour leurs femmes, leurs enfants, leurs frères et leurs proches, était pour eux de moindre importance ; mais leur plus grande et principale crainte était pour le saint temple.
For the care that they took for their wives, and their children, their brethren, and folks, was in least account with them: but the greatest and principal fear was for the holy temple.
Ceux aussi qui étaient dans la ville n'avaient pas moins d'inquiétude, étant troublés pour le combat qui se livrait au dehors.
Also they that were in the city took not the least care, being troubled for the conflict abroad.
Et maintenant, comme tous attendaient quelle serait l'issue, et que les ennemis s'étaient déjà approchés, que l'armée était rangée en bataille, les bêtes placées convenablement et les cavaliers postés aux ailes,
And now, when as all looked what should be the trial, and the enemies were already come near, and the army was set in array, and the beasts conveniently placed, and the horsemen set in wings,
Maccabée, voyant venir cette multitude, et les divers préparatifs d'armes, et la férocité des bêtes, étendit ses mains vers le ciel et invoqua le Seigneur qui fait des merveilles, sachant que la victoire ne vient pas par les armes, mais que, selon qu'il lui semble bon, il la donne à ceux qui en sont dignes ;
Maccabeus seeing the coming of the multitude, and the divers preparations of armour, and the fierceness of the beasts, stretched out his hands toward heaven, and called upon the Lord that worketh wonders, knowing that victory cometh not by arms, but even as it seemeth good to him, he giveth it to such as are worthy:
C'est pourquoi, dans sa prière, il dit ainsi : Ô Seigneur, tu as envoyé ton ange au temps d'Ézéchias, roi de Judée, et il a tué dans l'armée de Sennachérib cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille hommes ;
Therefore in his prayer he said after this manner; O Lord, thou didst send thine angel in the time of Ezekias king of Judea, and didst slay in the host of Sennacherib an hundred fourscore and five thousand:
C'est pourquoi maintenant aussi, ô Seigneur du ciel, envoie un bon ange devant nous pour leur inspirer la crainte et l'effroi ;
Wherefore now also, O Lord of heaven, send a good angel before us for a fear and dread unto them;
Et que par la force de ton bras ceux-là soient frappés de terreur, qui viennent avec blasphème contre ton peuple saint. Et il finit ainsi.
And through the might of thine arm let those be stricken with terror, that come against thy holy people to blaspheme. And he ended thus.
Alors Nicanor et ceux qui étaient avec lui s'avancèrent au son des trompettes et des chants.
Then Nicanor and they that were with him came forward with trumpets and songs.
Mais Judas et sa troupe attaquèrent les ennemis avec des invocations et des prières.
But Judas and his company encountered the enemies with invocation and prayer.
De sorte que, combattant de leurs mains et priant Dieu de leur cœur, ils tuèrent pas moins de trente-cinq mille hommes ; car ils furent grandement réjouis par l'apparition de Dieu.
So that fighting with their hands, and praying unto God with their hearts, they slew no less than thirty and five thousand men: for through the appearance of God they were greatly cheered.
Quand le combat fut fini, revenant avec joie, ils apprirent que Nicanor était tombé mort avec ses armes.
Now when the battle was done, returning again with joy, they knew that Nicanor lay dead in his harness.
Alors ils poussèrent un grand cri et firent un grand bruit, louant le Tout-Puissant dans leur propre langue.
Then they made a great shout and a noise, praising the Almighty in their own language.
Et Judas, qui avait toujours été le principal défenseur de ses concitoyens de corps et d'esprit, et qui avait conservé son amour pour ses compatriotes toute sa vie, commanda de trancher la tête de Nicanor, ainsi que sa main avec l'épaule, et de les porter à Jérusalem.
And Judas, who was ever the chief defender of the citizens both in body and mind, and who continued his love toward his countrymen all his life, commanded to strike off Nicanor’s head, and his hand with his shoulder, and bring them to Jerusalem.
Lorsqu'il fut arrivé là, ayant assemblé ceux de sa nation et placé les sacrificateurs devant l'autel, il fit venir ceux de la tour,
So when he was there, and called them of his nation together, and set the priests before the altar, he sent for them that were of the tower,
Et leur montra la tête de l'infâme Nicanor, et la main de ce blasphémateur qu'il avait étendue avec de fiers outrages contre le saint temple du Tout-Puissant.
And shewed them vile Nicanor’s head, and the hand of that blasphemer, which with proud brags he had stretched out against the holy temple of the Almighty.
Et après avoir coupé la langue de cet impie Nicanor, il commanda qu'on la donnât par morceaux aux oiseaux, et qu'on suspendît devant le temple le prix de sa folie.
And when he had cut out the tongue of that ungodly Nicanor, he commanded that they should give it by pieces unto the fowls, and hang up the reward of his madness before the temple.
Alors tous bénirent vers le ciel le Seigneur glorieux, disant : Béni soit celui qui a conservé son lieu saint sans souillure.
So every man praised toward the heaven the glorious Lord, saying, Blessed be he that hath kept his own place undefiled.
Il suspendit aussi la tête de Nicanor à la tour, pour être un signe évident et manifeste à tous du secours du Seigneur.
He hanged also Nicanor’s head upon the tower, an evident and manifest sign unto all of the help of the Lord.
Et ils ordonnèrent tous, par un décret commun, de ne laisser passer en aucun cas ce jour sans solennité, mais de célébrer le treizième jour du douzième mois, qui est appelé Adar en langue syriaque, le jour précédant le jour de Mardochée.
And they ordained all with a common decree in no case to let that day pass without solemnity, but to celebrate the thirtieth day of the twelfth month, which in the Syrian tongue is called Adar, the day before Mardocheus’ day.
C'est ainsi que les choses se passèrent à l'égard de Nicanor ; et depuis ce temps-là, les Hébreux furent maîtres de la ville. Et ici je finirai mon ouvrage.
Thus went it with Nicanor: and from that time forth the Hebrews had the city in their power. And here will I make an end.
Si je l'ai bien fait, et d'une manière convenable à l'histoire, c'est ce que je désirais ; mais si c'est d'une manière faible et médiocre, c'est ce que j'ai pu faire.
And if I have done well, and as is fitting the story, it is that which I desired: but if slenderly and meanly, it is that which I could attain unto.
Car, comme il est nuisible de boire du vin seul ou de l'eau seule, et comme le vin mêlé avec l'eau est agréable et flatte le goût, de même un discours bien ordonné charme les oreilles de ceux qui lisent l'histoire. Et ici sera la fin.
For as it is hurtful to drink wine or water alone; and as wine mingled with water is pleasant, and delighteth the taste: even so speech finely framed delighteth the ears of them that read the story. And here shall be an end.
