Voici les paroles du livre que Baruch, fils de Nérias, fils de Maasias, fils de Sédécias, fils d'Asadias, fils de Helcias, écrivit à Babylone,
And these are the words of the book, which Baruch the son of Nerias, the son of Maasias, the son of Sedecias, the son of Asadias, the son of Chelcias, wrote in Babylon,
La cinquième année, le septième jour du mois, au temps où les Chaldéens prirent Jérusalem et la brûlèrent par le feu.
In the fifth year, and in the seventh day of the month, what time as the Chaldeans took Jerusalem, and burnt it with fire.
Baruch lut les paroles de ce livre en présence de Jéchonias, fils de Joakim, roi de Juda, et en présence de tout le peuple qui était venu pour entendre le livre,
And Baruch did read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of Joachim king of Juda, and in the ears of all the people that came to hear the book,
en présence des grands et des fils du roi, en présence des anciens et de tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, de tous ceux qui habitaient à Babylone, au bord du fleuve Soud.
And in the hearing of the nobles, and of the king’s sons, and in the hearing of the elders, and of all the people, from the lowest unto the highest, even of all them that dwelt at Babylon by the river Sud.
Ils pleurèrent, jeûnèrent et prièrent devant le Seigneur.
Whereupon they wept, fasted, and prayed before the Lord.
Ils recueillirent aussi de l'argent, selon les facultés de chacun,
They made also a collection of money according to every man’s power:
et ils l'envoyèrent à Jérusalem au prêtre Joakim, fils de Helcias, fils de Salom, ainsi qu'aux prêtres et à tout le peuple qui se trouvait avec lui à Jérusalem,
And they sent it to Jerusalem unto Joachim the high priest, the son of Chelcias, son of Salom, and to the priests, and to all the people which were found with him at Jerusalem,
lorsqu'il reçut les vases de la maison du Seigneur, qui avaient été emportés du temple, pour les rapporter au pays de Juda, le dixième jour du mois de Sivan, savoir les vases d'argent que Sédécias, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, avait fait faire,
At the same time when he received the vessels of the house of the Lord, that were carried out of the temple, to return them into the land of Juda, the tenth day of the month Sivan, namely, silver vessels, which Sedecias the son of Josias king of Jada had made,
après que Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, eut emmené de Jérusalem Jéchonias, les princes, les captifs, les puissants et le peuple du pays, et les eut conduits à Babylone.
After that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias, and the princes, and the captives, and the mighty men, and the people of the land, from Jerusalem, and brought them unto Babylon.
Ils dirent : Voici, nous vous envoyons de l'argent ; achetez avec cet argent des holocaustes, des sacrifices pour le péché et de l'encens, préparez des offrandes, et offrez-les sur l'autel du Seigneur notre Dieu ;
And they said, Behold, we have sent you money to buy you burnt offerings, and sin offerings, and incense, and prepare ye manna, and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God;
et priez pour la vie de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, et pour la vie de Balthasar son fils, afin que leurs jours sur la terre soient comme les jours du ciel.
And pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and for the life of Balthasar his son, that their days may be upon earth as the days of heaven:
Le Seigneur nous donnera de la force et éclairera nos yeux ; nous vivrons sous l'ombre de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, et sous l'ombre de Balthasar son fils ; nous les servirons pendant de longs jours et nous trouverons grâce devant eux.
And the Lord will give us strength, and lighten our eyes, and we shall live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and under the shadow of Balthasar his son, and we shall serve them many days, and find favour in their sight.
Priez aussi pour nous le Seigneur notre Dieu, car nous avons péché contre le Seigneur notre Dieu, et jusqu'à ce jour la fureur du Seigneur et sa colère ne se sont point détournées de nous.
Pray for us also unto the Lord our God, for we have sinned against the Lord our God; and unto this day the fury of the Lord and his wrath is not turned from us.
Vous lirez ce livre que nous vous envoyons, pour en faire la confession dans la maison du Seigneur, aux jours de fête et aux jours solennels.
And ye shall read this book which we have sent unto you, to make confession in the house of the Lord, upon the feasts and solemn days.
Vous direz : Au Seigneur notre Dieu appartient la justice, mais à nous la confusion de visage, comme il paraît aujourd'hui pour les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem,
And ye shall say, To the Lord our God belongeth righteousness, but unto us the confusion of faces, as it is come to pass this day, unto them of Juda, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
pour nos rois, pour nos princes, pour nos prêtres, pour nos prophètes et pour nos pères.
And to our kings, and to our princes, and to our priests, and to our prophets, and to our fathers:
Car nous avons péché devant le Seigneur,
For we have sinned before the Lord,
nous lui avons désobéi, et nous n'avons pas écouté la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu pour marcher selon les commandements qu'il nous avait mis sous les yeux.
And disobeyed him, and have not hearkened unto the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in the commandments that he gave us openly:
Depuis le jour où le Seigneur fit sortir nos pères du pays d'Égypte jusqu'à ce jour, nous avons été rebelles au Seigneur notre Dieu, et nous nous sommes empressés de ne pas écouter sa voix.
Since the day that the Lord brought our forefathers out of the land of Egypt, unto this present day, we have been disobedient unto the Lord our God, and we have been negligent in not hearing his voice.
C'est pourquoi les maux se sont attachés à nous, ainsi que la malédiction que le Seigneur a prononcée par Moïse son serviteur, au jour où il fit sortir nos pères du pays d'Égypte pour nous donner une terre découlant de lait et de miel, comme on le voit aujourd'hui.
Wherefore the evils cleaved unto us, and the curse, which the Lord appointed by Moses his servant at the time that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to give us a land that floweth with milk and honey, like as it is to see this day.
Mais nous n'avons pas écouté la voix du Seigneur notre Dieu, selon toutes les paroles des prophètes qu'il nous a envoyés.
Nevertheless we have not hearkened unto the voice of the Lord our God, according unto all the words of the prophets, whom he sent unto us:
Chacun de nous a suivi les penchants de son cœur mauvais, pour servir des dieux étrangers et pour faire le mal aux yeux du Seigneur notre Dieu.
But every man followed the imagination of his own wicked heart, to serve strange gods, and to do evil in the sight of the Lord our God.
C'est pourquoi le Seigneur a accompli la parole qu'il avait prononcée contre nous, contre nos juges qui ont jugé Israël, contre nos rois, contre nos princes, et contre les hommes d'Israël et de Juda,
Therefore the Lord hath made good his word, which he pronounced against us, and against our judges that judged Israel, and against our kings, and against our princes, and against the men of Israel and Juda,
pour faire venir sur nous de grands fléaux, tels qu'il n'en est jamais arrivé sous tout le ciel de ce qui s'est accompli à Jérusalem, selon ce qui est écrit dans la loi de Moïse ;
To bring upon us great plagues, such as never happened under the whole heaven, as it came to pass in Jerusalem, according to the things that were written in the law of Moses;
au point que l'un mangeait la chair de son fils, et l'autre la chair de sa fille.
That a man should eat the flesh of his own son, and the flesh of his own daughter.
Il les a livrés en soumission à tous les royaumes qui nous entourent, pour être un sujet d'opprobre et de désolation parmi tous les peuples d'alentour où le Seigneur les a dispersés.
Moreover he hath delivered them to be in subjection to all the kingdoms that are round about us, to be as a reproach and desolation among all the people round about, where the Lord hath scattered them.
Ainsi nous avons été abaissés et non élevés, parce que nous avons péché contre le Seigneur notre Dieu en n'obéissant pas à sa voix.
Thus we were cast down, and not exalted, because we have sinned against the Lord our God, and have not been obedient unto his voice.
Au Seigneur notre Dieu appartient la justice, mais à nous et à nos pères la confusion de visage, comme il paraît aujourd'hui.
To the Lord our God appertaineth righteousness: but unto us and to our fathers open shame, as appeareth this day.
Car tous ces fléaux que le Seigneur avait prononcés contre nous sont venus sur nous.
For all these plagues are come upon us, which the Lord hath pronounced against us
Et nous n'avons pas supplié le Seigneur, afin que chacun de nous se détournât des pensées de son cœur mauvais.
Yet have we not prayed before the Lord, that we might turn every one from the imaginations of his wicked heart.
C'est pourquoi le Seigneur a veillé sur ces maux, et le Seigneur les a fait venir sur nous ; car le Seigneur est juste dans toutes les œuvres qu'il nous a commandées.
Wherefore the Lord watched over us for evil, and the Lord hath brought it upon us: for the Lord is righteous in all his works which he hath commanded us.
Mais nous n'avons pas écouté sa voix pour marcher dans les commandements du Seigneur qu'il avait mis devant nous.
Yet we have not hearkened unto his voice, to walk in the commandments of the Lord, that he hath set before us.
Et maintenant, Seigneur, Dieu d'Israël, toi qui as fait sortir ton peuple du pays d'Égypte par une main puissante, par des signes, par des prodiges, par une grande force et par un bras élevé, et qui t'es fait un nom comme il paraît aujourd'hui :
And now, O Lord God of Israel, that hast brought thy people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and high arm, and with signs, and with wonders, and with great power, and hast gotten thyself a name, as appeareth this day:
Seigneur notre Dieu, nous avons péché, nous avons été impies, nous avons été injustes dans toutes tes ordonnances.
O Lord our God, we have sinned, we have done ungodly, we have dealt unrighteously in all thine ordinances.
Que ta fureur se détourne de nous, car nous ne sommes restés qu'un petit nombre parmi les nations où tu nous as dispersés.
Let thy wrath turn from us: for we are but a few left among the heathen, where thou hast scattered us.
Exauce, Seigneur, notre prière et nos supplications ; délivre-nous à cause de toi-même, et fais-nous trouver grâce devant ceux qui nous ont emmenés captifs,
Hear our prayers, O Lord, and our petitions, and deliver us for thine own sake, and give us favour in the sight of them which have led us away:
afin que toute la terre sache que tu es le Seigneur notre Dieu, parce qu'Israël et sa race sont appelés de ton nom.
That all the earth may know that thou art the Lord our God, because Israel and his posterity is called by thy name.
Seigneur, regarde de ta sainte demeure et pense à nous ; incline, Seigneur, ton oreille et écoute.
O Lord, look down from thine holy house, and consider us: bow down thine ear, O Lord, to hear us.
Ouvre tes yeux et regarde ; car ce ne sont pas les morts qui sont dans le séjour des morts, et dont l'esprit a été retiré de leurs entrailles, qui rendront gloire et justice au Seigneur ;
Open thine eyes, and behold; for the dead that are in the graves, whose souls are taken from their bodies, will give unto the Lord neither praise nor righteousness:
mais l'âme qui est dans une grande affliction, qui marche courbée et sans force, les yeux qui défaillent et l'âme qui a faim, ceux-là te rendront gloire et justice, Seigneur.
But the soul that is greatly vexed, which goeth stooping and feeble, and the eyes that fail, and the hungry soul, will give thee praise and righteousness, O Lord.
Car ce n'est pas à cause de la justice de nos pères et de nos rois que nous répandons nos supplications devant toi, Seigneur notre Dieu.
Therefore we do not make our humble supplication before thee, O Lord our God, for the righteousness of our fathers, and of our kings.
Car tu as envoyé sur nous ta fureur et ton indignation, comme tu l'avais dit par tes serviteurs les prophètes, en disant :
For thou hast sent out thy wrath and indignation upon us, as thou hast spoken by thy servants the prophets, saying,
Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Courbez vos épaules et servez le roi de Babylone, et vous resterez dans le pays que j'ai donné à vos pères.
Thus saith the Lord, Bow down your shoulders to serve the king of Babylon: so shall ye remain in the land that I gave unto your fathers.
Mais si vous n'écoutez pas la voix du Seigneur pour servir le roi de Babylone,
But if ye will not hear the voice of the Lord, to serve the king of Babylon,
je ferai cesser dans les villes de Juda et dans les rues de Jérusalem les cris de joie et les cris d'allégresse, la voix de l'époux et la voix de l'épouse, et tout le pays sera un désert sans habitants.
I will cause to cease out of the cites of Judah, and from without Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of joy, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: and the whole land shall be desolate of inhabitants.
Mais nous n'avons pas écouté ta voix pour servir le roi de Babylone ; c'est pourquoi tu as accompli les paroles que tu avais dites par tes serviteurs les prophètes, savoir que les os de nos rois et les os de nos pères seraient tirés de leur sépulcre.
But we would not hearken unto thy voice, to serve the king of Babylon: therefore hast thou made good the words that thou spakest by thy servants the prophets, namely, that the bones of our kings, and the bones of our fathers, should be taken out of their place.
Et voici qu'ils ont été jetés à la chaleur du jour et au froid de la nuit, et ils sont morts dans de grandes souffrances, par la famine, par l'épée et par la peste.
And, lo, they are cast out to the heat of the day, and to the frost of the night, and they died in great miseries by famine, by sword, and by pestilence.
Et tu as réduit la maison qui est appelée de ton nom à l'état où elle est aujourd'hui, à cause de la méchanceté de la maison d'Israël et de la maison de Juda.
And the house which is called by thy name hast thou laid waste, as it is to be seen this day, for the wickedness of the house of Israel and the house of Juda.
Cependant, Seigneur notre Dieu, tu as agi envers nous selon toute ta bonté et selon toute ta grande miséricorde,
O Lord our God, thou hast dealt with us after all thy goodness, and according to all that great mercy of thine,
comme tu l'avais dit par ton serviteur Moïse, le jour où tu lui ordonnas d'écrire ta loi en présence des enfants d'Israël, en disant :
As thou spakest by thy servant Moses in the day when thou didst command him to write the law before the children of Israel, saying,
Si vous n'écoutez pas ma voix, certainement cette grande et nombreuse multitude sera réduite à un petit nombre parmi les nations où je les disperserai.
If ye will not hear my voice, surely this very great multitude shall be turned into a small number among the nations, where I will scatter them.
Car je savais qu'ils ne m'écouteraient pas, parce que c'est un peuple au cou roide ; mais dans la terre de leur captivité, ils rentreront en eux-mêmes.
For I knew that they would not hear me, because it is a stiffnecked people: but in the land of their captivities they shall remember themselves.
Ils sauront que je suis le Seigneur leur Dieu ; je leur donnerai un cœur et des oreilles pour entendre.
And shall know that I am the Lord their God: for I will give them an heart, and ears to hear:
Ils me loueront dans la terre de leur captivité, et ils se souviendront de mon nom.
And they shall praise me in the land of their captivity, and think upon my name,
Ils reviendront de leur cou roide et de leurs mauvaises actions, car ils se souviendront de la voie de leurs pères qui ont péché devant le Seigneur.
And return from their stiff neck, and from their wicked deeds: for they shall remember the way of their fathers, which sinned before the Lord.
Et je les ramènerai dans le pays que j'ai promis par serment à leurs pères, à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, et ils en seront les maîtres ; je les multiplierai, et ils ne diminueront plus.
And I will bring them again into the land which I promised with an oath unto their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and they shall be lords of it: and I will increase them, and they shall not be diminished.
Je conclurai avec eux une alliance éternelle, pour être leur Dieu, et ils seront mon peuple ; et je ne chasserai plus mon peuple d'Israël du pays que je leur ai donné.
And I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God, and they shall be my people: and I will no more drive my people of Israel out of the land that I have given them.
Seigneur Tout-Puissant, Dieu d'Israël, l'âme dans l'angoisse et l'esprit troublé crient vers toi.
O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, the soul in anguish the troubled spirit, crieth unto thee.
Écoute, Seigneur, et aie pitié, car tu es un Dieu miséricordieux ; aie pitié de nous, car nous avons péché devant toi.
Hear, O Lord, and have mercy; art thou art merciful: and have pity upon us, because we have sinned before thee.
Car tu demeures éternellement, et nous, nous périssons pour toujours.
For thou endurest for ever, and we perish utterly.
Seigneur Tout-Puissant, Dieu d'Israël, écoute maintenant la prière des morts d'Israël et de leurs fils qui ont péché devant toi, et qui n'ont pas écouté la voix du Seigneur leur Dieu, de sorte que les maux se sont attachés à nous.
O Lord Almighty, thou God of Israel, hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites, and of their children, which have sinned before thee, and not hearkened unto the voice of thee their God: for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us.
Ne te souviens pas des iniquités de nos pères, mais pense à ta puissance et à ton nom en ce temps-ci.
Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers: but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time.
Car tu es le Seigneur notre Dieu, et nous te louerons, Seigneur.
For thou art the Lord our God, and thee, O Lord, will we praise.
C'est pour cela que tu as mis ta crainte dans nos cœurs, afin que nous invoquions ton nom et que nous te louions dans notre captivité ; car nous avons rappelé à notre esprit toute l'iniquité de nos pères qui ont péché devant toi.
And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts, to the intent that we should call upon thy name, and praise thee in our captivity: for we have called to mind all the iniquity of our forefathers, that sinned before thee.
Voici que nous sommes encore aujourd'hui dans notre captivité, où tu nous as dispersés pour être un opprobre, une malédiction et un sujet de condamnation, selon toutes les iniquités de nos pères qui se sont éloignés du Seigneur notre Dieu.
Behold, we are yet this day in our captivity, where thou hast scattered us, for a reproach and a curse, and to be subject to payments, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, which departed from the Lord our God.
Écoute, Israël, les commandements de vie ; prête l'oreille pour apprendre la prudence.
Hear, Israel, the commandments of life: give ear to understand wisdom.
Pourquoi donc, Israël, es-tu dans le pays de tes ennemis ? Pourquoi as-tu vieilli dans une terre étrangère ? Pourquoi es-tu souillé avec les morts ?
How happeneth it Israel, that thou art in thine enemies’ land, that thou art waxen old in a strange country, that thou art defiled with the dead,
Pourquoi es-tu compté parmi ceux qui descendent dans le séjour des morts ?
That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave?
Tu as abandonné la source de la sagesse.
Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom.
Si tu avais marché dans la voie de Dieu, tu habiterais dans la paix pour toujours.
For if thou hadst walked in the way of God, thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever.
Apprends où est la sagesse, où est la force, où est l'intelligence, pour savoir en même temps où est la longueur des jours et la vie, où est la lumière des yeux et la paix.
Learn where is wisdom, where is strength, where is understanding; that thou mayest know also where is length of days, and life, where is the light of the eyes, and peace.
Qui a trouvé sa demeure ? Qui est entré dans ses trésors ?
Who hath found out her place? or who hath come into her treasures ?
Où sont les princes des nations, et ceux qui dominaient sur les bêtes de la terre ?
Where are the princes of the heathen become, and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth;
Ceux qui se jouaient des oiseaux du ciel, et ceux qui amassaient l'argent et l'or dans lesquels les hommes mettent leur confiance, et dont les acquisitions n'ont pas de fin ?
They that had their pastime with the fowls of the air, and they that hoarded up silver and gold, wherein men trust, and made no end of their getting?
Car ceux qui travaillaient l'argent et qui étaient si soigneux, et dont les œuvres sont impénétrables,
For they that wrought in silver, and were so careful, and whose works are unsearchable,
ils ont disparu et sont descendus dans le séjour des morts, et d'autres se sont levés à leur place.
They are vanished and gone down to the grave, and others are come up in their steads.
Des jeunes gens ont vu la lumière et ont habité sur la terre, mais ils n'ont pas connu la voie de la science.
Young men have seen light, and dwelt upon the earth: but the way of knowledge have they not known,
Ils n'en ont pas compris les sentiers, ils ne l'ont pas saisie ; leurs fils se sont éloignés de cette voie.
Nor understood the paths thereof, nor laid hold of it: their children were far off from that way.
On n'en a pas entendu parler en Canaan, et on ne l'a pas vue dans Théman.
It hath not been heard of in Chanaan, neither hath it been seen in Theman.
Les fils d'Agar qui cherchent la sagesse sur la terre, les marchands de Merran et de Théman, les conteurs de fables et ceux qui recherchent l'intelligence, aucun d'eux n'a connu la voie de la sagesse, ni ne s'est souvenu de ses sentiers.
The Agarenes that seek wisdom upon earth, the merchants of Meran and of Theman, the authors of fables, and searchers out of understanding; none of these have known the way of wisdom, or remember her paths.
Ô Israël, que la maison de Dieu est grande ! que le lieu de sa possession est vaste !
O Israel, how great is the house of God! and how large is the place of his possession!
Elle est grande et n'a pas de fin ; elle est haute et immense.
Great, and hath none end; high, and unmeasurable.
C'est là que furent les géants fameux dès le commencement, d'une stature si haute et si experts à la guerre.
There were the giants famous from the beginning, that were of so great stature, and so expert in war.
Ce n'est pas eux que le Seigneur a choisis, et il ne leur a pas donné la voie de la science.
Those did not the Lord choose, neither gave he the way of knowledge unto them:
Ils ont péri parce qu'ils n'avaient pas la sagesse, ils ont péri par leur propre folie.
But they were destroyed, because they had no wisdom, and perished through their own foolishness.
Qui est monté au ciel pour la prendre et l'a fait descendre des nues ?
Who hath gone up into heaven, and taken her, and brought her down from the clouds?
Qui a traversé la mer pour la trouver, et l'apportera pour de l'or pur ?
Who hath gone over the sea, and found her, and will bring her for pure gold?
Nul ne connaît son chemin, nul ne considère son sentier.
No man knoweth her way, nor thinketh of her path.
Mais celui qui sait tout la connaît, il l'a découverte par son intelligence ; lui qui a préparé la terre pour l'éternité, et l'a remplie d'animaux à quatre pieds ;
But he that knoweth all things knoweth her, and hath found her out with his understanding: he that prepared the earth for evermore hath filled it with fourfooted beasts:
lui qui envoie la lumière, et elle part ; il l'appelle, et elle lui obéit avec tremblement.
He that sendeth forth light, and it goeth, calleth it again, and it obeyeth him with fear.
Les étoiles ont brillé à leur poste et se sont réjouies ; il les a appelées, et elles ont dit : Nous voici ! et elles ont brillé avec joie pour celui qui les a faites.
The stars shined in their watches, and rejoiced: when he calleth them, they say, Here we be; and so with cheerfulness they shewed light unto him that made them.
C'est ici notre Dieu, et nul autre ne sera compté auprès de lui.
This is our God, and there shall none other be accounted of in comparison of him
Il a découvert toutes les voies de la science, et il l'a donnée à Jacob son serviteur, et à Israël son bien-aimé.
He hath found out all the way of knowledge, and hath given it unto Jacob his servant, and to Israel his beloved.
Après cela, elle a paru sur la terre et a conversé avec les hommes.
Afterward did he shew himself upon earth, and conversed with men.
C'est ici le livre des commandements de Dieu, et la loi qui subsiste éternellement ; tous ceux qui la gardent parviendront à la vie, mais ceux qui l'abandonnent mourront.
This is the book of the commandments of God, and the law that endureth for ever: all they that keep it shall come to life; but such as leave it shall die.
Retourne-toi, Jacob, et saisis-la ; marche vers l'éclat de sa lumière pour être illuminé.
Turn thee, O Jacob, and take hold of it: walk in the presence of the light thereof, that thou mayest be illuminated.
Ne donne pas ta gloire à un autre, ni tes privilèges à une nation étrangère.
Give not thine honour to another, nor the things that are profitable unto thee to a strange nation.
Ô Israël, nous sommes heureux, car ce qui plaît à Dieu nous est connu.
O Israel, happy are we: for things that are pleasing to God are made known unto us.
Prends courage, mon peuple, mémorial d'Israël !
Be of good cheer, my people, the memorial of Israel.

Ye were sold to the nations, not for your destruction: but because ye moved God to wrath, ye were delivered unto the enemies.
Car vous avez provoqué celui qui vous a faits, en sacrifiant à des démons et non à Dieu.
For ye provoked him that made you by sacrificing unto devils, and not to God.
Vous avez oublié le Dieu éternel qui vous a nourris, et vous avez attristé Jérusalem qui vous a élevés.
Ye have forgotten the everlasting God, that brought you up; and ye have grieved Jerusalem, that nursed you.

For when she saw the wrath of God coming upon you, she said, Hearken, O ye that dwell about Sion: God hath brought upon me great mourning;

For I saw the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting brought upon them.
Je les avais nourris avec joie, mais je les ai laissés partir avec des pleurs et dans le deuil.
With joy did I nourish them; but sent them away with weeping and mourning.
Que personne ne se réjouisse à mon sujet, moi veuve et délaissée de beaucoup ; je suis restée désolée à cause des péchés de mes enfants, parce qu'ils se sont détournés de la loi de Dieu.
Let no man rejoice over me, a widow, and forsaken of many, who for the sins of my children am left desolate; because they departed from the law of God.
Ils n'ont pas connu ses ordonnances, ils n'ont pas marché dans les voies de ses commandements, et ils n'ont pas suivi les sentiers de la discipline selon sa justice.
They knew not his statutes, nor walked in the ways of his commandments, nor trod in the paths of discipline in his righteousness.
Que les voisines de Sion viennent, et souvenez-vous de la captivité de mes fils et de mes filles, que l'Éternel a fait venir sur eux.
Let them that dwell about Sion come, and remember ye the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting hath brought upon them.
Car il a fait venir contre eux une nation de loin, une nation impudente et d'une langue étrangère, qui n'a pas respecté le vieillard et n'a pas eu pitié de l'enfant.
For he hath brought a nation upon them from far, a shameless nation, and of a strange language, who neither reverenced old man, nor pitied child.
Ils ont emmené les enfants chéris de la veuve, et l'ont laissée seule, privée de ses filles.
These have carried away the dear beloved children of the widow, and left her that was alone desolate without daughters.

Car celui qui a fait venir sur vous ces maux vous délivrera de la main de vos ennemis.
For he that brought these plagues upon you will deliver you from the hands of your enemies.
Allez, mes enfants, allez votre chemin ; car moi, je suis restée délaissée.
Go your way, O my children, go your way: for I am left desolate.
J'ai quitté la robe de la paix, et j'ai revêtu le sac de ma supplication ; je crierai vers l'Éternel tant que je vivrai.
I have put off the clothing of peace, and put upon me the sackcloth of my prayer: I will cry unto the Everlasting in my days.
Prenez courage, mes enfants, criez vers le Seigneur, et il vous délivrera de la puissance et de la main de vos ennemis.
Be of good cheer, O my children, cry unto the Lord, and he will deliver you from the power and hand of the enemies.
Car j'espère en l'Éternel pour votre salut, et une joie m'est venue de la part du Saint, à cause de la miséricorde qui vous arrivera bientôt de l'Éternel votre Sauveur.
For my hope is in the Everlasting, that he will save you; and joy is come unto me from the Holy One, because of the mercy which shall soon come unto you from the Everlasting our Saviour.
Car je vous ai laissés partir dans le deuil et les pleurs, mais Dieu vous me rendra avec joie et allégresse pour toujours.
For I sent you out with mourning and weeping: but God will give you to me again with joy and gladness for ever.
Comme maintenant les voisines de Sion ont vu votre captivité, ainsi elles verront bientôt votre salut de la part de notre Dieu, lequel viendra sur vous avec une grande gloire et l'éclat de l'Éternel.
Like as now the neighbours of Sion have seen your captivity: so shall they see shortly your salvation from our God which shall come upon you with great glory, and brightness of the Everlasting.
Mes enfants, supportez avec patience la colère qui est venue sur vous de la part de Dieu ; car ton ennemi t'a persécuté, mais bientôt tu verras sa ruine et tu lui fouleras le cou.
My children, suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you from God: for thine enemy hath persecuted thee; but shortly thou shalt see his destruction, and shalt tread upon his neck.

My delicate ones have gone rough ways, and were taken away as a flock caught of the enemies.

Miserable are the cities which thy children served: miserable is she that received thy sons.
Car, de même qu'elle s'est réjouie de ta ruine et a été gaie de ta chute, ainsi elle sera affligée de sa propre désolation.
For as she rejoiced at thy ruin, and was glad of thy fall: so shall she be grieved for her own desolation.
J'ôterai l'allégresse de sa grande multitude, et son orgueil sera changé en deuil.
For I will take away the rejoicing of her great multitude, and her pride shall be turned into mourning.
Car un feu viendra sur elle de la part de l'Éternel pour de longs jours, et elle sera habitée par des démons pendant longtemps.
For fire shall come upon her from the Everlasting, long to endure; and she shall be inhabited of devils for a great time.
Jérusalem, regarde vers l'orient, et vois la joie qui te vient de la part de Dieu.
O Jerusalem, look about thee toward the east, and behold the joy that cometh unto thee from God.
Voici que tes fils reviennent, eux que tu avais laissés partir ; ils reviennent rassemblés de l'orient à l'occident par la parole du Saint, se réjouissant de la gloire de Dieu.
Lo, thy sons come, whom thou sentest away, they come gathered together from the east to the west by the word of the Holy One, rejoicing in the glory of God.
Quitte, Jérusalem, ta robe de deuil et d'affliction, et revêts pour toujours la parure de la gloire qui te vient de Dieu.
Put off, O Jerusalem, the garment of mourning and affliction, and put on the comeliness of the glory that cometh from God for ever.

Beware therefore that ye in no wise be like to strangers, neither be ye and of them, when ye see the multitude before them and behind them, worshipping them.

And taking gold, as it were for a virgin that loveth to go gay, they make crowns for the heads of their gods.

They wipe their faces because of the dust of the temple, when there is much upon them.

And he that cannot put to death one that offendeth him holdeth a sceptre, as though he were a judge of the country.
Un autre a dans sa main droite un poignard et une hache, mais il ne peut se délivrer de la guerre ni des voleurs.
He hath also in his right hand a dagger and an axe: but cannot deliver himself from war and thieves.
Par là on voit qu'ils ne sont pas des dieux ; ne les craignez donc pas.
Whereby they are known not to be gods: therefore fear them not.
Car, de même qu'un vase dont on se sert est inutile quand il est brisé, ainsi en est-il de leurs dieux : lorsqu'ils sont placés dans leurs temples, leurs yeux sont pleins de la poussière que font les pieds de ceux qui entrent.
For like as a vessel that a man useth is nothing worth when it is broken; even so it is with their gods: when they be set up in the temple, their eyes be full of dust through the feet of them that come in.

Ceux même qui les servent sont confus, car si le dieu tombe par terre, il ne peut se relever de lui-même ; si on le pose debout, il ne peut bouger de lui-même ; si on l'incline, il ne peut se redresser ; mais on met devant eux des offrandes comme devant des morts.
They also that serve them are ashamed: for if they fall to the ground at any time, they cannot rise up again of themselves: neither, if one set them upright, can they move of themselves: neither, if they be bowed down, can they make themselves straight: but they set gifts before them as unto dead men.
Leurs prêtres vendent leurs victimes et en abusent ; de même leurs femmes en mettent une partie dans le sel, et n'en donnent rien au pauvre ni à l'infirme.
As for the things that are sacrificed unto them, their priests sell and abuse; in like manner their wives lay up part thereof in salt; but unto the poor and impotent they give nothing of it.
Les femmes impures et celles qui sont en couche touchent à leurs sacrifices ; sachant par là que ce ne sont pas des dieux, ne les craignez pas.
Menstruous women and women in childbed eat their sacrifices: by these things ye may know that they are no gods: fear them not.
Car comment peut-on les appeler des dieux ? puisque des femmes servent des offrandes à ces dieux d'argent, d'or et de bois.
For how can they be called gods? because women set meat before the gods of silver, gold, and wood.
Et les prêtres se tiennent assis dans leurs temples, ayant leurs vêtements déchirés, la tête et la barbe rasées, et n'ayant rien sur la tête.
And the priests sit in their temples, having their clothes rent, and their heads and beards shaven, and nothing upon their heads.
Ils hurlent et crient devant leurs dieux, comme on fait dans un repas funèbre.
They roar and cry before their gods, as men do at the feast when one is dead.

In like manner, they can neither give riches nor money: though a man make a vow unto them, and keep it not, they will not require it.
Ils ne délivrent aucun homme de la mort, et n'arrachent pas le faible des mains du puissant.
They can save no man from death, neither deliver the weak from the mighty.
Ils ne rendent pas la vue à l'aveugle, et ne secourent pas l'homme dans sa détresse.
They cannot restore a blind man to his sight, nor help any man in his distress.
Ils n'ont pas pitié de la veuve, et ne font pas de bien à l'orphelin.
They can shew no mercy to the widow, nor do good to the fatherless.
Leurs dieux de bois, dorés et argentés, sont semblables aux pierres tirées de la montagne ; ceux qui les adorent seront confondus.
Their gods of wood, and which are overlaid with gold and silver, are like the stones that be hewn out of the mountain: they that worship them shall be confounded.
Comment donc peut-on penser ou dire que ce sont des dieux, puisque les Chaldéens eux-mêmes les déshonorent ?
How should a man then think and say that they are gods, when even the Chaldeans themselves dishonour them?
Car s'ils voient un muet qui ne peut parler, ils le présentent à Bel, et le prient de le faire parler, comme s'il pouvait comprendre.
Who if they shall see one dumb that cannot speak, they bring him, and intreat Bel that he may speak, as though he were able to understand.

Yet they cannot understand this themselves, and leave them: for they have no knowledge.
Les femmes aussi, ceintes de cordes, se tiennent sur les chemins et brûlent du son pour parfum ; mais si l'une d'elles, attirée par quelque passant, a dormi avec lui, elle insulte sa compagne de ce qu'elle n'a pas été jugée digne comme elle, et que sa corde n'a pas été rompue.
The women also with cords about them, sitting in the ways, burn bran for perfume: but if any of them, drawn by some that passeth by, lie with him, she reproacheth her fellow, that she was not thought as worthy as herself, nor her cord broken.
Tout ce qui se fait chez eux est mensonge ; comment donc peut-on penser ou dire que ce sont des dieux ?
Whatsoever is done among them is false: how may it then be thought or said that they are gods?
Ils sont l'ouvrage de charpentiers et d'orfèvres ; ils ne sont rien d'autre que ce que les ouvriers veulent qu'ils soient.
They are made of carpenters and goldsmiths: they can be nothing else than the workmen will have them to be.
Ceux même qui les font ne durent pas longtemps ; comment donc les choses qu'ils ont faites seraient-elles des dieux ?
And they themselves that made them can never continue long; how should then the things that are made of them be gods?
Car ils n'ont laissé que mensonge et opprobre à ceux qui viendront après eux.
For they left lies and reproaches to them that come after.
Car, lorsqu'il survient une guerre ou quelque fléau, les prêtres délibèrent entre eux pour savoir où ils se cacheront avec eux.
For when there cometh any war or plague upon them, the priests consult with themselves, where they may be hidden with them.
Comment donc ne sent-on pas que ce ne sont pas des dieux, puisqu'ils ne peuvent se sauver eux-mêmes de la guerre ni des fléaux ?
How then cannot men perceive that they be no gods, which can neither save themselves from war, nor from plague?
Car, puisqu'ils ne sont que de bois, dorés et argentés, on reconnaîtra plus tard que c'est un mensonge.
For seeing they be but of wood, and overlaid with silver and gold, it shall be known hereafter that they are false:
Il sera manifeste à toutes les nations et aux rois que ce ne sont pas des dieux, mais l'ouvrage des mains des hommes, et qu'il n'y a en eux aucune œuvre de Dieu.
And it shall manifestly appear to all nations and kings that they are no gods, but the works of men’s hands, and that there is no work of God in them.
Qui donc ne saura pas que ce ne sont pas des dieux ?
Who then may not know that they are no gods?
Car ils ne peuvent établir de roi dans un pays, ni donner la pluie aux hommes.
For neither can they set up a king in the land, nor give rain unto men.
Ils ne peuvent non plus juger leur propre cause, ni redresser un tort, car ils sont sans pouvoir, comme des corneilles entre le ciel et la terre.
Neither can they judge their own cause, nor redress a wrong, being unable: for they are as crows between heaven and earth.
Car, si le feu tombe sur la maison de ces dieux de bois, dorés ou argentés, leurs prêtres s'enfuiront et se sauveront, mais eux seront brûlés comme des poutres.
Whereupon when fire falleth upon the house of gods of wood, or laid over with gold or silver, their priests will flee away, and escape; but they themselves shall be burned asunder like beams.
Ils ne peuvent résister à aucun roi ni à aucun ennemi ; comment donc peut-on admettre ou penser que ce sont des dieux ?
Moreover they cannot withstand any king or enemies: how can it then be thought or said that they be gods?
Ces dieux de bois, argentés et dorés, ne peuvent se délivrer ni des voleurs ni des brigands.
Neither are those gods of wood, and laid over with silver or gold, able to escape either from thieves or robbers.
Les plus forts leur enlèvent l'or, l'argent et les vêtements dont ils sont parés, et s'en vont avec ; et ils ne peuvent se secourir eux-mêmes.
Whose gold, and silver, and garments wherewith they are clothed, they that are strong take, and go away withal: neither are they able to help themselves.
C'est pourquoi il vaut mieux être un roi qui déploie sa force, ou un vase utile dans une maison, dont le propriétaire se sert, que d'être de tels faux dieux ; ou une porte dans une maison, pour garder ce qui s'y trouve, que d'être de tels faux dieux ; ou une colonne de bois dans un palais, que d'être de tels faux dieux.
Therefore it is better to be a king that sheweth his power, or else a profitable vessel in an house, which the owner shall have use of, than such false gods; or to be a door in an house, to keep such things therein, than such false gods. or a pillar of wood in a a palace, than such false gods.
Car le soleil, la lune et les étoiles, qui brillent et qui sont envoyés pour leur office, sont obéissants.
For sun, moon, and stars, being bright and sent to do their offices, are obedient.
De même l'éclair, quand il brille, est facile à voir ; de même aussi le vent souffle dans tout pays.
In like manner the lightning when it breaketh forth is easy to be seen; and after the same manner the wind bloweth in every country.
Et quand Dieu commande aux nuages de parcourir toute la terre, ils font ce qui leur est ordonné.
And when God commandeth the clouds to go over the whole world, they do as they are bidden.
Et le feu envoyé d'en haut pour consumer les montagnes et les forêts fait ce qui lui est commandé ; mais ces dieux ne leur ressemblent ni en apparence ni en puissance.
And the fire sent from above to consume hills and woods doeth as it is commanded: but these are like unto them neither in shew nor power.
C'est pourquoi on ne doit ni penser ni dire que ce sont des dieux, puisqu'ils ne peuvent ni rendre de jugements, ni faire de bien aux hommes.
Wherefore it is neither to be supposed nor said that they are gods, seeing, they are able neither to judge causes, nor to do good unto men.
Sachant donc que ce ne sont pas des dieux, ne les craignez pas.
Knowing therefore that they are no gods, fear them not,
Car ils ne peuvent ni maudire ni bénir les rois.
For they can neither curse nor bless kings:
Ils ne peuvent montrer de signes dans le ciel parmi les nations, ni briller comme le soleil, ni donner de la lumière comme la lune.
Neither can they shew signs in the heavens among the heathen, nor shine as the sun, nor give light as the moon.
Les bêtes valent mieux qu'eux, car elles peuvent se mettre à l'abri et se secourir elles-mêmes.
The beasts are better than they: for they can get under a cover and help themselves.
Il ne nous est donc aucunement manifeste que ce sont des dieux ; c'est pourquoi ne les craignez pas.

And ye shall know them to be no gods by the bright purple that rotteth upon them: and they themselves afterward shall be eaten, and shall be a reproach in the country.
Mieux vaut donc l'homme juste qui n'a point d'idoles, car il sera loin de l'opprobre.
Better therefore is the just man that hath none idols: for he shall be far from reproach.
