Daniel vivait auprès du roi, et il était honoré plus que tous ses amis.
And Daniel conversed with the king, and was honoured above all his friends.
Or les Babyloniens avaient une idole nommée Bel, pour laquelle on dépensait chaque jour douze grandes mesures de fleur de farine, quarante brebis et six vases de vin.
Now the Babylons had an idol, called Bel, and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour, and forty sheep, and six vessels of wine.
Le roi l'honorait aussi, et il allait chaque jour l'adorer ; mais Daniel adorait son propre Dieu. Et le roi lui dit : Pourquoi n'adores-tu pas Bel ?
And the king worshipped it and went daily to adore it: but Daniel worshipped his own God. And the king said unto him, Why dost not thou worship Bel?
Il répondit et dit : C'est que je ne vénère point des idoles faites de main d'homme, mais le Dieu vivant qui a créé le ciel et la terre, et qui a puissance sur toute chair.
Who answered and said, Because I may not worship idols made with hands, but the living God, who hath created the heaven and the earth, and hath sovereignty over all flesh.
Le roi lui dit : Ne penses-tu pas que Bel soit un dieu vivant ? Ne vois-tu pas tout ce qu'il mange et boit chaque jour ?
Then said the king unto him, Thinkest thou not that Bel is a living God? seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day?
Daniel sourit et dit : Ô roi, ne t'y trompe pas ; car il n'est que d'argile au-dedans et d'airain au-dehors, et il n'a jamais rien mangé ni bu.
Then Daniel smiled, and said, O king, be not deceived: for this is but clay within, and brass without, and did never eat or drink any thing.
Alors le roi, en colère, appela ses prêtres et leur dit : Si vous ne me dites pas qui est celui qui dévore ces offrandes, vous mourrez.
So the king was wroth, and called for his priests, and said unto them, If ye tell me not who this is that devoureth these expences, ye shall die.
Mais si vous prouvez que Bel les dévore, Daniel mourra, car il a blasphémé contre Bel. Et Daniel dit au roi : Qu'il soit fait selon ta parole.
But if ye can certify me that Bel devoureth them, then Daniel shall die: for he hath spoken blasphemy against Bel. And Daniel said unto the king, Let it be according to thy word.
Or les prêtres de Bel étaient au nombre de soixante-dix, sans compter leurs femmes et leurs enfants. Et le roi se rendit avec Daniel au temple de Bel.
Now the priests of Bel were threescore and ten, beside their wives and children. And the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel.
Les prêtres de Bel dirent : Voici, nous allons sortir ; et toi, ô roi, fais placer les mets, prépare le vin, puis ferme la porte et scelle-la de ton propre anneau.
So Bel’s priests said, Lo, we go out: but thou, O king, set on the meat, and make ready the wine, and shut the door fast and seal it with thine own signet;
Et demain, quand tu entreras, si tu ne trouves pas que Bel a tout mangé, nous subirons la mort, ou bien Daniel, qui a parlé faussement contre nous.
And to morrow when thou comest in, if thou findest not that Bel hath eaten up all, we will suffer death: or else Daniel, that speaketh falsely against us.
Ils ne s'en inquiétaient guère, car ils avaient fait sous la table une entrée secrète par laquelle ils s'introduisaient toujours et consommaient ces choses.
And they little regarded it: for under the table they had made a privy entrance, whereby they entered in continually, and consumed those things.
Lorsqu'ils furent sortis, le roi fit placer les mets devant Bel. Mais Daniel commanda à ses serviteurs d'apporter de la cendre, et ils la répandirent par tout le temple, en présence du roi seul ; puis ils sortirent, fermèrent la porte, la scellèrent du sceau du roi et s'en allèrent.
So when they were gone forth, the king set meats before Bel. Now Daniel had commanded his servants to bring ashes, and those they strewed throughout all the temple in the presence of the king alone: then went they out, and shut the door, and sealed it with the king’s signet, and so departed.
Pendant la nuit, les prêtres vinrent avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants, selon leur coutume, et ils mangèrent et burent tout ce qui était là.
Now in the night came the priests with their wives and children, as they were wont to do, and did eat and drink up all.
Le lendemain, de grand matin, le roi se leva, et Daniel avec lui.
In the morning betime the king arose, and Daniel with him.
Le roi dit : Daniel, les sceaux sont-ils entiers ? Il répondit : Ils sont entiers, ô roi.
And the king said, Daniel, are the seals whole? And he said, Yea, O king, they be whole.
Aussitôt qu'il eut ouvert la porte, le roi regarda la table et s'écria d'une voix forte : Tu es grand, ô Bel, et il n'y a en toi aucune tromperie !
And as soon as he had opened the dour, the king looked upon the table, and cried with a loud voice, Great art thou, O Bel, and with thee is no deceit at all.
Alors Daniel se mit à rire et retint le roi pour qu'il n'entrât pas, et il dit : Regarde maintenant le pavé, et considère bien de qui sont ces pas.
Then laughed Daniel, and held the king that he should not go in, and said, Behold now the pavement, and mark well whose footsteps are these.
Le roi dit : Je vois des pas d'hommes, de femmes et d'enfants. Et le roi entra en fureur.
And the king said, I see the footsteps of men, women, and children. And then the king was angry,
Il fit saisir les prêtres, leurs femmes et leurs enfants, qui lui montrèrent les portes secrètes par lesquelles ils entraient pour consommer ce qui était sur la table.
And took the priests with their wives and children, who shewed him the privy doors, where they came in, and consumed such things as were upon the table.
C'est pourquoi le roi les fit mettre à mort et livra Bel au pouvoir de Daniel, qui le détruisit avec son temple.
Therefore the king slew them, and delivered Bel into Daniel’s power, who destroyed him and his temple.
Il y avait aussi en ce lieu un grand dragon, que les Babyloniens adoraient.
And in that same place there was a great dragon, which they of Babylon worshipped.
Le roi dit à Daniel : Diras-tu aussi que celui-ci est d'airain ? Voici qu'il vit, qu'il mange et qu'il boit ; tu ne peux dire qu'il n'est pas un dieu vivant ; adore-le donc.
And the king said unto Daniel, Wilt thou also say that this is of brass? lo, he liveth, he eateth and drinketh; thou canst not say that he is no living god: therefore worship him.
Daniel répondit au roi : J'adorerai le Seigneur mon Dieu, car il est le Dieu vivant.
Then said Daniel unto the king, I will worship the Lord my God: for he is the living God.
Mais toi, ô roi, donne-m'en la permission, et je tuerai ce dragon sans épée ni bâton. Le roi dit : Je te la donne.
But give me leave, O king, and I shall slay this dragon without sword or staff. The king said, I give thee leave.
Alors Daniel prit de la poix, de la graisse et des poils, les fit cuire ensemble et en fit des boules qu'il jeta dans la gueule du dragon ; le dragon en creva, et Daniel dit : Voici les dieux que vous adoriez.
Then Daniel took pitch, and fat, and hair, and did seethe them together, and made lumps thereof: this he put in the dragon’s mouth, and so the dragon burst in sunder : and Daniel said, Lo, these are the gods ye worship.
Les Babyloniens, ayant appris cela, en conçurent une grande indignation et conspirèrent contre le roi, disant : Le roi est devenu Juif ; il a renversé Bel, tué le dragon et fait mourir les prêtres.
When they of Babylon heard that, they took great indignation, and conspired against the king, saying, The king is become a Jew, and he hath destroyed Bel, he hath slain the dragon, and put the priests to death.
Ils vinrent donc trouver le roi et dirent : Livre-nous Daniel, sinon nous te ferons mourir, toi et ta maison.
So they came to the king, and said, Deliver us Daniel, or else we will destroy thee and thine house.
Le roi, voyant qu'ils le pressaient avec violence, fut contraint de leur livrer Daniel.
Now when the king saw that they pressed him sore, being constrained, he delivered Daniel unto them:
Ils le jetèrent dans la fosse aux lions, où il resta six jours.
Who cast him into the lions’ den: where he was six days.
Il y avait dans la fosse sept lions, auxquels on donnait chaque jour deux corps et deux brebis ; mais alors on ne leur donna rien, afin qu'ils dévorassent Daniel.
And in the den there were seven lions, and they had given them every day two carcases, and two sheep: which then were not given to them, to the intent they might devour Daniel.
Or il y avait en Judée un prophète nommé Habacuc, qui avait fait cuire un potage et émietté du pain dans un vase, et il allait aux champs pour l'apporter aux moissonneurs.
Now there was in Jewry a prophet, called Habbacuc, who had made pottage, and had broken bread in a bowl, and was going into the field, for to bring it to the reapers.
L'ange du Seigneur dit à Habacuc : Porte le repas que tu as à Babylone, à Daniel, qui est dans la fosse aux lions.
But the angel of the Lord said unto Habbacuc, Go, carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel, who is in the lions’ den.
Habacuc répondit : Seigneur, je n'ai jamais vu Babylone, et je ne connais point la fosse.
And Habbacuc said, Lord, I never saw Babylon; neither do I know where the den is.
Alors l'ange du Seigneur le prit par le sommet de la tête, le porta par les cheveux de sa tête, et le posa à Babylone, au-dessus de la fosse, avec toute la célérité de son esprit.
Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown, and bare him by the hair of his head, and through the vehemency of his spirit set him in Babylon over the den.
Et Habacuc cria, disant : Daniel, Daniel, prends le repas que Dieu t'a envoyé.
And Habbacuc cried, saying, O Daniel, Daniel, take the dinner which God hath sent thee.
Daniel dit : Tu t'es souvenu de moi, ô Dieu, et tu n'as point abandonné ceux qui te cherchent et qui t'aiment.
And Daniel said, Thou hast remembered me, O God: neither hast thou forsaken them that seek thee and love thee.
Daniel se leva et mangea ; et l'ange du Seigneur remit aussitôt Habacuc en son lieu.
So Daniel arose, and did eat: and the angel of the Lord set Habbacuc in his own place again immediately.
Le septième jour, le roi vint pour pleurer Daniel ; il s'approcha de la fosse, y regarda, et voici que Daniel était assis.
Upon the seventh day the king went to bewail Daniel: and when he came to the den, he looked in, and behold, Daniel was sitting.
Alors le roi s'écria d'une voix forte : Tu es grand, Seigneur Dieu de Daniel, et il n'y en a point d'autre que toi !
Then cried the king with a loud voice, saying, Great art Lord God of Daniel, and there is none other beside thee.
Et il le fit sortir de la fosse, et il y fit jeter ceux qui avaient voulu sa perte ; et ils furent dévorés en un instant devant ses yeux.
And he drew him out, and cast those that were the cause of his destruction into the den: and they were devoured in a moment before his face.
