La douzième année du règne de Nabuchodonosor, qui régnait à Ninive, la grande ville ; au temps d'Arphaxad, qui régnait sur les Mèdes à Ecbatane,
In the twelfth year of the reign of Nabuchodonosor, who reigned in Nineve, the great city; in the days of Arphaxad, which reigned over the Medes in Ecbatane,
Il bâtit autour d'Ecbatane des murailles de pierres de taille, de trois coudées de large et de six coudées de long ; il donna à la muraille une hauteur de soixante-dix coudées et une largeur de cinquante coudées ;
And built in Ecbatane walls round about of stones hewn three cubits broad and six cubits long, and made the height of the wall seventy cubits, and the breadth thereof fifty cubits:
il éleva sur les portes des tours de cent coudées de haut, et leur largeur à la base était de soixante coudées ;
And set the towers thereof upon the gates of it an hundred cubits high, and the breadth thereof in the foundation threescore cubits:
il fit les portes, des portes s'élevant à une hauteur de soixante-dix coudées, et leur largeur était de quarante coudées, pour le passage de ses armées puissantes et pour la revue de ses gens de pied ;
And he made the gates thereof, even gates that were raised to the height of seventy cubits, and the breadth of them was forty cubits, for the going forth of his mighty armies, and for the setting in array of his footmen:
en ces jours-là, le roi Nabuchodonosor fit la guerre au roi Arphaxad dans la grande plaine, qui est la plaine sur les confins de Ragau.
Even in those days king Nabuchodonosor made war with king Arphaxad in the great plain, which is the plain in the borders of Ragau.
Et tous les habitants de la montagne s'unirent à lui, et tous ceux qui habitaient le long de l'Euphrate, du Tigre et de l'Hydaspe, et dans la plaine d'Arioch, roi des Élyméens ; et de très nombreuses nations des fils de Chélod s'assemblèrent pour le combat.
And there came unto him all they that dwelt in the hill country, and all that dwelt by Euphrates, and Tigris and Hydaspes, and the plain of Arioch the king of the Elymeans, and very many nations of the sons of Chelod, assembled themselves to the battle.
Alors Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, envoya des messagers à tous les habitants de la Perse, et à tous ceux qui habitaient vers l'occident, à ceux qui habitaient la Cilicie, Damas, le Liban et l'Anti-Liban, et à tous ceux qui habitaient sur la côte de la mer,
Then Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians sent unto all that dwelt in Persia, and to all that dwelt westward, and to those that dwelt in Cilicia, and Damascus, and Libanus, and Antilibanus, and to all that dwelt upon the sea coast,
et à ceux qui étaient parmi les nations du Carmel et de Galaad, de la haute Galilée et de la grande plaine d'Esdrelon,
And to those among the nations that were of Carmel, and Galaad, and the higher Galilee, and the great plain of Esdrelom,
et à tous ceux qui étaient en Samarie et dans ses villes, et au-delà du Jourdain jusqu'à Jérusalem, et à Bétané, et Chélus, et Kadès, et au fleuve d'Égypte, et à Taphnès, et Ramessé, et dans tout le pays de Gessen,
And to all that were in Samaria and the cities thereof, and beyond Jordan unto Jerusalem, and Betane, and Chelus, and Kades, and the river of Egypt, and Taphnes, and Ramesse, and all the land of Gesem,
jusqu'au-delà de Tanis et de Memphis, et à tous les habitants de l'Égypte, jusqu'aux confins de l'Éthiopie.
Until ye come beyond Tanis and Memphis, and to all the inhabitants of Egypt, until ye come to the borders of Ethiopia.
Mais tous les habitants du pays méprisèrent l'ordre de Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, et n'allèrent point avec lui à la guerre ; car ils n'avaient pas peur de lui, et il était à leurs yeux comme un homme seul ; ils renvoyèrent ses ambassadeurs les mains vides et couverts d'opprobre.
But all the inhabitants of the land made light of the commandment of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, neither went they with him to the battle; for they were not afraid of him: yea, he was before them as one man, and they sent away his ambassadors from them without effect, and with disgrace.
Alors Nabuchodonosor entra dans une grande fureur contre tout ce pays, et il jura par son trône et par son royaume qu'il se vengerait de tous les territoires de Cilicie, de Damas et de Syrie, et qu'il ferait périr par l'épée tous les habitants du pays de Moab, et les fils d'Ammon, et toute la Judée, et tous ceux qui étaient en Égypte, jusqu'aux confins des deux mers.
Therefore Nabuchodonosor was very angry with all this country, and sware by his throne and kingdom, that he would surely be avenged upon all those coasts of Cilicia, and Damascus, and Syria, and that he would slay with the sword all the inhabitants of the land of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and all Judea, and all that were in Egypt, till ye come to the borders of the two seas.
Il marcha en bataille avec sa puissance contre le roi Arphaxad, la dix-septième année, et il l'emporta dans son combat ; car il renversa toute la puissance d'Arphaxad, et tous ses cavaliers, et tous ses chars,
Then he marched in battle array with his power against king Arphaxad in the seventeenth year, and he prevailed in his battle: for he overthrew all the power of Arphaxad, and all his horsemen, and all his chariots,
et il se rendit maître de ses villes, et il vint jusqu'à Ecbatane, et il prit les tours, et il pilla ses rues, et il changea sa beauté en ignominie.
And became lord of his cities, and came unto Ecbatane, and took the towers, and spoiled the streets thereof, and turned the beauty thereof into shame.
Il prit aussi Arphaxad dans les montagnes de Ragau, et le transperça de ses dards, et l'extermina entièrement ce jour-là.
He took also Arphaxad in the mountains of Ragau, and smote him through with his darts, and destroyed him utterly that day.
Puis il s'en retourna à Ninive, lui et toute sa suite de nations diverses, une très grande multitude d'hommes de guerre, et là il se reposa et fit des festins, lui et son armée, pendant cent vingt jours.
So he returned afterward to Nineve, both he and all his company of sundry nations being a very great multitude of men of war, and there he took his ease, and banqueted, both he and his army, an hundred and twenty days.
Et la dix-huitième année, le vingt-deuxième jour du premier mois, on parla dans la maison de Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, de se venger, comme il l'avait dit, de toute la terre.
And in the eighteenth year, the two and twentieth day of the first month, there was talk in the house of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians that he should, as he said, avenge himself on all the earth.
Il appela donc tous ses officiers et tous ses grands, et leur communiqua son conseil secret, et décréta de sa propre bouche l'extermination de toute la terre.
So he called unto him all his officers, and all his nobles, and communicated with them his secret counsel, and concluded the afflicting of the whole earth out of his own mouth.
Alors ils résolurent de détruire toute chair qui n'aurait pas obéi à l'ordre de sa bouche.
Then they decreed to destroy all flesh, that did not obey the commandment of his mouth.
Et quand il eut achevé son conseil, Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, appela Holopherne, le chef de son armée, qui était le premier après lui, et lui dit :
And when he had ended his counsel, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians called Holofernes the chief captain of his army, which was next unto him, and said unto him.
Ainsi parle le grand roi, le seigneur de toute la terre : Voici, tu sortiras de ma présence, et tu prendras avec toi des hommes qui se confient en leur propre force, cent vingt mille hommes de pied, et douze mille chevaux avec leurs cavaliers.
Thus saith the great king, the lord of the whole earth, Behold, thou shalt go forth from my presence, and take with thee men that trust in their own strength, of footmen an hundred and twenty thousand; and the number of horses with their riders twelve thousand.
Et tu marcheras contre tout le pays d'occident, parce qu'ils ont désobéi à mon commandement.
And thou shalt go against all the west country, because they disobeyed my commandment.
Et tu leur déclareras qu'ils me préparent la terre et l'eau ; car je sortirai dans ma fureur contre eux, et je couvrirai toute la face de la terre des pieds de mon armée, et je les leur livrerai pour être pillés ;
And thou shalt declare unto that they prepare for me earth and water: for I will go forth in my wrath against them and will cover the whole face of the earth with the feet of mine army, and I will give them for a spoil unto them:
de sorte que leurs morts rempliront leurs vallées et leurs ruisseaux, et que le fleuve sera rempli de leurs cadavres jusqu'à déborder ;
So that their slain shall fill their valleys and brooks and the river shall be filled with their dead, till it overflow:
et je les emmènerai captifs jusqu'aux extrémités de toute la terre.
And I will lead them captives to the utmost parts of all the earth.
Toi donc, tu partiras et tu t'empareras d'avance pour moi de tous leurs territoires ; et s'ils se livrent à toi, tu me les réserveras jusqu'au jour de leur châtiment.
Thou therefore shalt go forth. and take beforehand for me all their coasts: and if they will yield themselves unto thee, thou shalt reserve them for me till the day of their punishment.
Mais quant à ceux qui se révolteront, que ton œil ne les épargne point ; livre-les au carnage et au pillage partout où tu iras.
But concerning them that rebel, let not thine eye spare them; but put them to the slaughter, and spoil them wheresoever thou goest.
Car, aussi vrai que je vis et par la puissance de mon royaume, tout ce que j'ai dit, je l'accomplirai de ma main.
For as I live, and by the power of my kingdom, whatsoever I have spoken, that will I do by mine hand.
Et prends garde de ne transgresser aucun des commandements de ton seigneur, mais accomplis-les pleinement, comme je te l'ai ordonné, et ne tarde pas à les exécuter.
And take thou heed that thou transgress none of the commandments of thy lord, but accomplish them fully, as I have commanded thee, and defer not to do them.
Alors Holopherne sortit de la présence de son seigneur, et appela tous les gouverneurs, les capitaines et les officiers de l'armée d'Assur ;
Then Holofernes went forth from the presence of his lord, and called all the governors and captains, and the officers of the army of Assur;
et il fit le dénombrement des hommes d'élite pour le combat, comme son seigneur le lui avait ordonné, jusqu'à cent vingt mille, et douze mille archers à cheval ;
And he mustered the chosen men for the battle, as his lord had commanded him, unto an hundred and twenty thousand, and twelve thousand archers on horseback;
et il les rangea comme on ordonne une grande armée pour la guerre.
And he ranged them, as a great army is ordered for the war.
Et il prit des chameaux et des ânes pour leurs bagages, en très grand nombre ; et des brebis, des bœufs et des chèvres sans nombre pour leurs provisions ;
And he took camels and asses for their carriages, a very great number; and sheep and oxen and goats without number for their provision:
et des vivres en abondance pour chaque homme de l'armée, et beaucoup d'or et d'argent de la maison du roi.
And plenty of victual for every man of the army, and very much gold and silver out of the king’s house.
Puis il partit avec toute sa puissance pour précéder le roi Nabuchodonosor dans l'expédition, et pour couvrir toute la face de la terre vers l'occident avec leurs chars, leurs cavaliers et leurs hommes de pied d'élite.
Then he went forth and all his power to go before king Nabuchodonosor in the voyage, and to cover all the face of the earth westward with their chariots, and horsemen, and their chosen footmen.
Une grande multitude de divers pays vint aussi avec eux comme des sauterelles, et comme le sable de la terre ; car la multitude était sans nombre.
A great number also sundry countries came with them like locusts, and like the sand of the earth: for the multitude was without number.
Et ils partirent de Ninive, marchèrent trois jours vers la plaine de Bectileth, et campèrent depuis Bectileth près de la montagne qui est à la gauche de la haute Cilicie.
And they went forth of Nineve three days’ journey toward the plain of Bectileth, and pitched from Bectileth near the mountain which is at the left hand of the upper Cilicia.
Alors il prit toute son armée, ses gens de pied, ses cavaliers et ses chars, et s'en alla de là dans la montagne ;
Then he took all his army, his footmen, and horsemen and chariots, and went from thence into the hill country;
et il détruisit Phud et Lud, et pilla tous les fils de Rasses, et les fils d'Ismaël, qui étaient vers le désert, au midi du pays des Chelliens.
And destroyed Phud and Lud, and spoiled all the children of Rasses, and the children of Israel, which were toward the wilderness at the south of the land of the Chellians.
Puis il passa l'Euphrate, traversa la Mésopotamie, et détruisit toutes les villes hautes qui étaient sur le fleuve Arbonaï, jusqu'à ce qu'on arrive à la mer.
Then he went over Euphrates, and went through Mesopotamia, and destroyed all the high cities that were upon the river Arbonai, till ye come to the sea.
Et il s'empara des frontières de la Cilicie, et tua tous ceux qui lui résistaient, et parvint aux confins de Japheth, qui étaient vers le midi, vis-à-vis de l'Arabie.
And he took the borders of Cilicia, and killed all that resisted him, and came to the borders of Japheth, which were toward the south, over against Arabia.
Il enveloppa aussi tous les fils de Madian, brûla leurs tentes et pilla leurs bergeries.
He compassed also all the children of Madian, and burned up their tabernacles, and spoiled their sheepcotes.
Puis il descendit dans la plaine de Damas au temps de la moisson des blés, et brûla tous leurs champs, détruisit leurs troupeaux de gros et de menu bétail, pilla aussi leurs villes, ravagea entièrement leurs pays, et frappa tous leurs jeunes gens du tranchant de l'épée.
Then he went down into the plain of Damascus in the time of wheat harvest, and burnt up all their fields, and destroyed their flocks and herds, also he spoiled their cities, and utterly wasted their countries, and smote all their young men with the edge of the sword.
C'est pourquoi la crainte et l'effroi de lui tombèrent sur tous les habitants des côtes de la mer, qui étaient à Sidon et à Tyr, et sur ceux qui habitaient à Sour et à Ocina, et sur tous ceux qui habitaient à Jemnaan ; et ceux qui habitaient à Azot et à Ascalon eurent une grande peur de lui.
Therefore the fear and dread of him fell upon all the inhabitants of the sea coasts, which were in Sidon and Tyrus, and them that dwelt in Sur and Ocina, and all that dwelt in Jemnaan; and they that dwelt in Azotus and Ascalon feared him greatly.
Ils lui envoyèrent donc des ambassadeurs pour traiter de la paix, disant :
So they sent ambassadors unto him to treat of peace, saying,
Voici, nous, les serviteurs de Nabuchodonosor le grand roi, nous sommes devant toi ; use de nous comme il te semblera bon.
Behold, we the servants of Nabuchodonosor the great king lie before thee; use us as shall be good in thy sight.
Voici, nos maisons, et tous nos lieux, et tous nos champs de blé, et nos troupeaux de menu et de gros bétail, et toutes les enceintes de nos tentes sont devant ta face ; use d'eux comme il te plaira.
Behold, our houses, and all our places, and all our fields of wheat, and flocks, and herds, and all the lodges of our tents lie before thy face; use them as it pleaseth thee.
Voici, même nos villes et leurs habitants sont tes serviteurs ; viens et traite-les comme il te semblera bon.
Behold, even our cities and the inhabitants thereof are thy servants; come and deal with them as seemeth good unto thee.
Ainsi ces hommes vinrent vers Holopherne et lui parlèrent de cette manière.
So the men came to Holofernes, and declared unto him after this manner.
Alors il descendit vers la côte de la mer, lui et son armée, et mit des garnisons dans les villes hautes, et prit d'entre elles des hommes d'élite pour lui servir d'auxiliaires.
Then came he down toward the sea coast, both he and his army, and set garrisons in the high cities, and took out of them chosen men for aid.
Et eux, et tout le pays d'alentour, les reçurent avec des couronnes, avec des danses et avec des tambourins.
So they and all the country round about received them with garlands, with dances, and with timbrels.
Cependant il renversa leurs frontières et coupa leurs bois sacrés ; car il avait décrété de détruire tous les dieux du pays, afin que toutes les nations n'adorassent que Nabuchodonosor seul, et que toutes les langues et toutes les tribus l'invoquassent comme dieu.
Yet he did cast down their frontiers, and cut down their groves: for he had decreed to destroy all the gods of the land, that all nations should worship Nabuchodonosor only, and that all tongues and tribes should call upon him as god.
Il vint aussi vis-à-vis d'Esdrelon, près de la Judée, vis-à-vis du grand défilé de la Judée.
Also he came over against Esdraelon near unto Judea, over against the great strait of Judea.
Et il campa entre Guéba et Scythopolis, et il y resta un mois entier, afin de rassembler tous les bagages de son armée.
And he pitched between Geba and Scythopolis, and there he tarried a whole month, that he might gather together all the carriages of his army.
Or les enfants d'Israël, qui habitaient en Judée, apprirent tout ce qu'Holopherne, le chef de l'armée de Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, avait fait aux nations, et de quelle manière il avait pillé tous leurs temples et les avait réduits à néant.
Now the children of Israel, that dwelt in Judea, heard all that Holofernes the chief captain of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians had done to the nations, and after what manner he had spoiled all their temples, and brought them to nought.
C'est pourquoi ils eurent une peur extrême de lui, et furent dans l'angoisse pour Jérusalem et pour le temple du Seigneur leur Dieu ;
Therefore they were exceedingly afraid of him, and were troubled for Jerusalem, and for the temple of the Lord their God:
car ils étaient depuis peu revenus de la captivité, et tout le peuple de la Judée s'était rassemblé récemment ; et les vases, l'autel et la maison avaient été sanctifiés après la profanation.
For they were newly returned from the captivity, and all the people of Judea were lately gathered together: and the vessels, and the altar, and the house, were sanctified after the profanation.
C'est pourquoi ils envoyèrent dans tout le territoire de Samarie, et dans les villages, et à Béthoron, et Belmen, et Jéricho, et à Choba, et Ésora, et dans la vallée de Salem ;
Therefore they sent into all the coasts of Samaria, and the villages and to Bethoron, and Belmen, and Jericho, and to Choba, and Esora, and to the valley of Salem:
et ils s'emparèrent d'avance de tous les sommets des hautes montagnes, et fortifièrent les villages qui s'y trouvaient, et amassèrent des vivres pour les provisions de guerre ; car leurs champs venaient d'être moissonnés.
And possessed themselves beforehand of all the tops of the high mountains, and fortified the villages that were in them, and laid up victuals for the provision of war: for their fields were of late reaped.
De plus, Joacim le grand prêtre, qui était en ces jours-là à Jérusalem, écrivit à ceux qui habitaient à Béthulie et à Bétomestham, qui est vis-à-vis d'Esdrelon vers la plaine, près de Dothaïm,
Also Joacim the high priest, which was in those days in Jerusalem, wrote to them that dwelt in Bethulia, and Betomestham, which is over against Esdraelon toward the open country, near to Dothaim,
leur ordonnant de garder les passages de la montagne ; car par là se trouvait l'entrée de la Judée, et il était facile d'arrêter ceux qui voudraient monter, parce que le passage était étroit, pour deux hommes au plus.
Charging them to keep the passages of the hill country: for by them there was an entrance into Judea, and it was easy to stop them that would come up, because the passage was straight, for two men at the most.
Et les enfants d'Israël firent ce que Joacim le grand prêtre leur avait ordonné, avec les anciens de tout le peuple d'Israël, qui habitaient à Jérusalem.
And the children of Israel did as Joacim the high priest had commanded them, with the ancients of all the people of Israel, which dwelt at Jerusalem.
Alors tout homme d'Israël cria vers Dieu avec une grande ferveur, et c'est avec une grande véhémence qu'ils humilièrent leurs âmes ;
Then every man of Israel cried to God with great fervency, and with great vehemency did they humble their souls:
eux, leurs femmes et leurs enfants, leur bétail, tout étranger et mercenaire, et leurs serviteurs achetés à prix d'argent, mirent des sacs sur leurs reins.
Both they, and their wives and their children, and their cattle, and every stranger and hireling, and their servants bought with money, put sackcloth upon their loins.
Ainsi tout homme, toute femme, les petits enfants et les habitants de Jérusalem se prosternèrent devant le temple, mirent de la cendre sur leurs têtes et étendirent leurs sacs devant la face du Seigneur ; ils mirent aussi un sac autour de l'autel,
Thus every man and women, and the little children, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, fell before the temple, and cast ashes upon their heads, and spread out their sackcloth before the face of the Lord: also they put sackcloth about the altar,
et ils crièrent vers le Dieu d'Israël, tous d'un commun accord et avec instance, afin qu'il ne livrât pas leurs enfants au pillage, leurs femmes à la dépréciation, les villes de leur héritage à la destruction, et le sanctuaire à la profanation et à l'opprobre, pour la joie des nations.
And cried to the God of Israel all with one consent earnestly, that he would not give their children for a prey, and their wives for a spoil, and the cities of their inheritance to destruction, and the sanctuary to profanation and reproach, and for the nations to rejoice at.
Dieu exauça donc leurs prières et regarda leurs afflictions ; car le peuple jeûna plusieurs jours dans toute la Judée et à Jérusalem devant le sanctuaire du Seigneur Tout-Puissant.
So God heard their prayers, and looked upon their afflictions: for the people fasted many days in all Judea and Jerusalem before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty.
Et Joacim le grand prêtre, et tous les prêtres qui se tenaient devant le Seigneur, et ceux qui servaient le Seigneur, avaient les reins ceints de sacs, et offraient l'holocauste perpétuel, avec les vœux et les dons volontaires du peuple,
And Joacim the high priest, and all the priests that stood before the Lord, and they which ministered unto the Lord, had their loins girt with sackcloth, and offered the daily burnt offerings, with the vows and free gifts of the people,
et ils avaient de la cendre sur leurs tiares, et ils criaient vers le Seigneur de toute leur force, afin qu'il regardât favorablement toute la maison d'Israël.
And had ashes on their mitres, and cried unto the Lord with all their power, that he would look upon all the house of Israel graciously.
Alors on annonça à Holopherne, le chef de l'armée d'Assur, que les enfants d'Israël s'étaient préparés pour la guerre, qu'ils avaient fermé les passages de la montagne, qu'ils avaient fortifié tous les sommets des hautes collines et qu'ils avaient placé des obstacles dans les plaines ;
Then was it declared to Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Assur, that the children of Israel had prepared for war, and had shut up the passages of the hill country, and had fortified all the tops of the high hills and had laid impediments in the champaign countries:
ce qui le mit dans une grande fureur, et il appela tous les princes de Moab, les capitaines d'Ammon et tous les gouverneurs de la côte de la mer,
Wherewith he was very angry, and called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast,
et il leur dit : Dites-moi maintenant, fils de Chanaan, quel est ce peuple qui habite dans la montagne, quelles sont les villes qu'ils habitent, quelle est la multitude de leur armée, en quoi consiste leur puissance et leur force, et quel roi est établi sur eux, ou quel chef de leur armée ;
And he said unto them, Tell me now, ye sons of Chanaan, who this people is, that dwelleth in the hill country, and what are the cities that they inhabit, and what is the multitude of their army, and wherein is their power and strength, and what king is set over them, or captain of their army;
et pourquoi ont-ils résolu de ne pas venir à ma rencontre, plus que tous les habitants de l'occident ?
And why have they determined not to come and meet me, more than all the inhabitants of the west.
Alors Achior, le chef de tous les fils d'Ammon, dit : Que mon seigneur écoute maintenant une parole de la bouche de son serviteur, et je te déclarerai la vérité sur ce peuple qui habite près de toi et qui occupe ces montagnes ; et il ne sortira aucun mensonge de la bouche de ton serviteur.
Then said Achior, the captain of all the sons of Ammon, Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of thy servant, and I will declare unto thee the truth concerning this people, which dwelleth near thee, and inhabiteth the hill countries: and there shall no lie come out of the mouth of thy servant.
Ce peuple descend des Chaldéens ;
This people are descended of the Chaldeans:
et ils séjournèrent autrefois en Mésopotamie, parce qu'ils ne voulaient pas suivre les dieux de leurs pères, qui étaient au pays de Chaldée.
And they sojourned heretofore in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of Chaldea.
Car ils abandonnèrent la voie de leurs ancêtres et adorèrent le Dieu du ciel, le Dieu qu'ils connaissaient ; c'est pourquoi on les chassa de la présence de leurs dieux, et ils s'enfuirent en Mésopotamie, et y séjournèrent de nombreux jours.
For they left the way of their ancestors, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew: so they cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days.
Puis leur Dieu leur commanda de partir du lieu où ils séjournaient et d'aller au pays de Chanaan ; là ils habitèrent, et ils s'enrichirent d'or et d'argent, et d'un bétail très nombreux.
Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Chanaan: where they dwelt, and were increased with gold and silver, and with very much cattle.
Mais quand une famine couvrit tout le pays de Chanaan, ils descendirent en Égypte et y séjournèrent tant qu'ils y trouvèrent de la nourriture ; ils y devinrent une grande multitude, de sorte qu'on ne pouvait plus compter leur nation.
But when a famine covered all the land of Chanaan, they went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, while they were nourished, and became there a great multitude, so that one could not number their nation.
C'est pourquoi le roi d'Égypte s'éleva contre eux, usa de ruse avec eux, les accabla par le travail de la brique et en fit des esclaves.
Therefore the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtilly with them, and brought them low with labouring in brick, and made them slaves.
Alors ils crièrent vers leur Dieu, et il frappa tout le pays d'Égypte de plaies incurables ; c'est pourquoi les Égyptiens les chassèrent de devant eux.
Then they cried unto their God, and he smote all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues: so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight.
Et Dieu dessécha la mer Rouge devant eux,
And God dried the Red sea before them,
et il les conduisit au mont Sina et à Kadès-Barné, et il chassa tous ceux qui habitaient dans le désert.
And brought them to mount Sina, and Cades-Barne, and cast forth all that dwelt in the wilderness.
Ainsi ils habitèrent au pays des Amoréens, et ils détruisirent par leur force tous ceux d'Hésebon, et passant le Jourdain ils possédèrent toute la montagne.
So they dwelt in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength all them of Esebon, and passing over Jordan they possessed all the hill country.
Et ils chassèrent devant eux le Cananéen, le Phérézien, le Jébusien, le Sichémien et tous les Guergésiens, et ils habitèrent dans ce pays de nombreux jours.
And they cast forth before them the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, the Jebusite, and the Sychemite, and all the Gergesites, and they dwelt in that country many days.
Et tant qu'ils ne péchaient pas devant leur Dieu, ils prospéraient, parce que le Dieu qui hait l'iniquité était avec eux.
And whilst they sinned not before their God, they prospered, because the God that hateth iniquity was with them.
Mais quand ils s'éloignèrent de la voie qu'il leur avait prescrite, ils furent détruits dans de nombreux combats très rudes, et furent emmenés captifs dans une terre qui n'était pas la leur ; le temple de leur Dieu fut renversé par terre, et leurs villes furent prises par les ennemis.
But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many battles very sore, and were led captives into a land that was not their’s, and the temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by the enemies.
Mais maintenant ils sont revenus à leur Dieu, ils sont remontés des lieux où ils étaient dispersés, ils ont pris possession de Jérusalem, où se trouve leur sanctuaire, et ils se sont établis dans la montagne, car elle était déserte.
But now are they returned to their God, and are come up from the places where they were scattered, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate.
Maintenant donc, mon seigneur et gouverneur, s'il y a quelque erreur chez ce peuple et s'ils pèchent contre leur Dieu, considérons que cela sera leur ruine, et montons, et nous les vaincrons.
Now therefore, my lord and governor, if there be any error against this people, and they sin against their God, let us consider that this shall be their ruin, and let us go up, and we shall overcome them.
Mais s'il n'y a pas d'iniquité dans leur nation, que mon seigneur passe maintenant son chemin, de peur que leur Seigneur ne les défende, que leur Dieu ne soit pour eux, et que nous ne devenions un opprobre devant tout le monde.
But if there be no iniquity in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we become a reproach before all the world.
Et quand Achior eut achevé ces paroles, tout le peuple qui se tenait autour de la tente murmura, et les grands d'Holopherne, et tous ceux qui habitaient au bord de la mer et en Moab, dirent qu'il fallait le tuer.
And when Achior had finished these sayings, all the people standing round about the tent murmured, and the chief men of Holofernes, and all that dwelt by the sea side, and in Moab, spake that he should kill him.
Car, disaient-ils, nous n'aurons pas peur de la face des enfants d'Israël ; car voici, c'est un peuple qui n'a ni force ni puissance pour un rude combat.
For, say they, we will not be afraid of the face of the children of Israel: for, lo, it is a people that have no strength nor power for a strong battle
Maintenant donc, seigneur Holopherne, nous monterons, et ils seront une proie pour être dévorés par toute ton armée.
Now therefore, lord Holofernes, we will go up, and they shall be a prey to be devoured of all thine army.
Et quand le tumulte des hommes qui étaient autour du conseil eut cessé, Holopherne, le chef de l'armée d'Assur, dit à Achior et à tous les Moabites, devant toute l'assemblée des autres nations :
And when the tumult of men that were about the council was ceased, Holofernes the chief captain of the army of Assur said unto Achior and all the Moabites before all the company of other nations,
Et qui es-tu, Achior, et vous, mercenaires d'Éphraïm, pour avoir prophétisé contre nous aujourd'hui, et avoir dit que nous ne devions pas faire la guerre au peuple d'Israël, parce que leur Dieu les défendra ? Et qui est Dieu, sinon Nabuchodonosor ?
And who art thou, Achior, and the hirelings of Ephraim, that thou hast prophesied against us as to day, and hast said, that we should not make war with the people of Israel, because their God will defend them? and who is God but Nabuchodonosor?
Il enverra sa puissance, et il les détruira de la face de la terre, et leur Dieu ne les délivrera pas ; mais nous, ses serviteurs, nous les détruirons comme un seul homme, car ils ne peuvent soutenir la force de nos chevaux.
He will send his power, and will destroy them from the face of the earth, and their God shall not deliver them: but we his servants will destroy them as one man; for they are not able to sustain the power of our horses.
Car avec eux nous les foulerons aux pieds, et leurs montagnes seront enivrées de leur sang, et leurs champs seront remplis de leurs cadavres, et leurs pas ne pourront subsister devant nous, car ils périront entièrement, dit le roi Nabuchodonosor, seigneur de toute la terre ; car il a dit : Aucune de mes paroles ne sera vaine.
For with them we will tread them under foot, and their mountains shall be drunken with their blood, and their fields shall be filled with their dead bodies, and their footsteps shall not be able to stand before us, for they shall utterly perish, saith king Nabuchodonosor, lord of all the earth: for he said, None of my words shall be in vain.
Et toi, Achior, mercenaire d'Ammon, qui as prononcé ces paroles au jour de ton iniquité, tu ne verras plus ma face dès ce jour, jusqu'à ce que j'aie tiré vengeance de cette nation venue d'Égypte.
And thou, Achior, an hireling of Ammon, which hast spoken these words in the day of thine iniquity, shalt see my face no more from this day, until I take vengeance of this nation that came out of Egypt.
Et alors l'épée de mon armée et la multitude de ceux qui me servent passeront à travers tes flancs, et tu tomberas parmi leurs morts, quand je reviendrai.
And then shall the sword of mine army, and the multitude of them that serve me, pass through thy sides, and thou shalt fall among their slain, when I return.
Maintenant donc, mes serviteurs te ramèneront dans la montagne, et te placeront dans l'une des villes des passages ;
Now therefore my servants shall bring thee back into the hill country, and shall set thee in one of the cities of the passages:
et tu ne périras pas, jusqu'à ce que tu sois détruit avec eux.
And thou shalt not perish, till thou be destroyed with them.
Et si tu te persuades en ton esprit qu'ils seront pris, que ton visage ne s'abatte point ; je l'ai dit, et aucune de mes paroles ne sera vaine.
And if thou persuade thyself in thy mind that they shall be taken, let not thy countenance fall: I have spoken it, and none of my words shall be in vain.
Alors Holopherne commanda à ses serviteurs qui servaient dans sa tente de prendre Achior, de le mener à Béthulie et de le livrer entre les mains des enfants d'Israël.
Then Holofernes commanded his servants, that waited in his tent, to take Achior, and bring him to Bethulia, and deliver him into the hands of the children of Israel.
Ses serviteurs le prirent donc et le menèrent hors du camp dans la plaine ; ils s'en allèrent du milieu de la plaine vers la montagne, et arrivèrent aux fontaines qui étaient au-dessous de Béthulie.
So his servants took him, and brought him out of the camp into the plain, and they went from the midst of the plain into the hill country, and came unto the fountains that were under Bethulia.
Et quand les hommes de la ville virent eux, ils prirent leurs armes et sortirent de la ville vers le sommet de la colline ; et tous les hommes qui se servaient de la fronde les empêchèrent de monter en jetant des pierres contre eux.
And when the men of the city saw them, they took up their weapons, and went out of the city to the top of the hill: and every man that used a sling kept them from coming up by casting of stones against them.
Néanmoins, s'étant glissés secrètement sous la colline, ils lièrent Achior, le jetèrent à terre, le laissèrent au pied de la colline et s'en retournèrent vers leur seigneur.
Nevertheless having gotten privily under the hill, they bound Achior, and cast him down, and left him at the foot of the hill, and returned to their lord.
Mais les Israélites descendirent de leur ville, vinrent à lui, le délièrent, l'emmenèrent à Béthulie et le présentèrent aux gouverneurs de la ville ;
But the Israelites descended from their city, and came unto him, and loosed him, and brought him to Bethulia, and presented him to the governors of the city:
lesquels étaient en ces jours-là Ozias, fils de Michée, de la tribu de Siméon, et Chabris, fils de Gothoniel, et Charmis, fils de Melchiel.
Which were in those days Ozias the son of Micha, of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris the son of Gothoniel, and Charmis the son of Melchiel.
Et ils convoquèrent tous les anciens de la ville, et toute leur jeunesse accourut, ainsi que leurs femmes, à l'assemblée, et ils placèrent Achior au milieu de tout leur peuple. Alors Ozias l'interrogea sur ce qui s'était passé.
And they called together all the ancients of the city, and all their youth ran together, and their women, to the assembly, and they set Achior in the midst of all their people. Then Ozias asked him of that which was done.
Et he répondit et leur déclara les paroles du conseil d'Holopherne, et toutes les paroles qu'il avait prononcées au milieu des princes d'Assur, et tout ce qu'Holopherne avait dit avec orgueil contre la maison d'Israël.
And he answered and declared unto them the words of the council of Holofernes, and all the words that he had spoken in the midst of the princes of Assur, and whatsoever Holofernes had spoken proudly against the house of Israel.
Alors le peuple se prosterna et adora Dieu, et cria vers Dieu, disant :
Then the people fell down and worshipped God, and cried unto God. saying,
Seigneur, Dieu du ciel, regarde leur orgueil, et aie pitié de l'humiliation de notre nation, et regarde la face de ceux qui te sont sanctifiés en ce jour.
O Lord God of heaven, behold their pride, and pity the low estate of our nation, and look upon the face of those that are sanctified unto thee this day.
Puis ils consolèrent Achior et le louèrent grandement.
Then they comforted Achior, and praised him greatly.
Et Ozias l'emmena de l'assemblée dans sa maison, et fit un festin aux anciens ; et ils invoquèrent le Dieu d'Israël toute cette nuit pour obtenir du secours.
And Ozias took him out of the assembly unto his house, and made a feast to the elders; and they called on the God of Israel all that night for help.
Le lendemain, Holopherne commanda à toute son armée et à tout son peuple qui était venu se joindre à lui, de lever le camp contre Béthulie, de s'emparer d'avance des montées de la montagne et de faire la guerre aux enfants d'Israël.
The next day Holofernes commanded all his army, and all his people which were come to take his part, that they should remove their camp against Bethulia, to take aforehand the ascents of the hill country, and to make war against the children of Israel.
Alors leurs hommes vaillants levèrent leurs camps ce jour-là, et l'armée des hommes de guerre était de cent soixante-dix mille hommes de pied et de douze mille cavaliers, sans compter les bagages et les autres hommes qui étaient à pied parmi eux, une très grande multitude.
Then their strong men removed their camps in that day, and the army of the men of war was an hundred and seventy thousand footmen, and twelve thousand horsemen, beside the baggage, and other men that were afoot among them, a very great multitude.
Et ils campèrent dans la vallée près de Béthulie, près de la fontaine, et ils s'étendirent en largeur sur Dothaïm jusqu'à Belmaïm, et en longueur de Béthulie jusqu'à Cynamon, qui est vis-à-vis d'Esdrelon.
And they camped in the valley near unto Bethulia, by the fountain, and they spread themselves in breadth over Dothaim even to Belmaim, and in length from Bethulia unto Cynamon, which is over against Esdraelon.
Or les enfants d'Israël, quand ils virent leur multitude, furent grandement troublés, et dirent chacun à son prochain : Maintenant ces hommes vont lécher la face de la terre ; car ni les hautes montagnes, ni les vallées, ni les collines ne pourront supporter leur poids.
Now the children of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, were greatly troubled, and said every one to his neighbour, Now will these men lick up the face of the earth; for neither the high mountains, nor the valleys, nor the hills, are able to bear their weight.
Alors chaque homme prit ses armes de guerre, et quand ils eurent allumé des feux sur leurs tours, ils restèrent et veillèrent toute cette nuit.
Then every man took up his weapons of war, and when they had kindled fires upon their towers, they remained and watched all that night.
Mais le second jour, Holopherne fit sortir tous ses cavaliers à la vue des enfants d'Israël qui étaient à Béthulie,
But in the second day Holofernes brought forth all his horsemen in the sight of the children of Israel which were in Bethulia,
et il examina les passages qui montaient à la ville, et vint aux fontaines de leurs eaux, et s'en empara, et y mit des garnisons d'hommes de guerre, et lui-même s'en retourna vers son peuple.
And viewed the passages up to the city, and came to the fountains of their waters, and took them, and set garrisons of men of war over them, and he himself removed toward his people.
Alors tous les chefs des enfants d'Ésaü, et tous les gouverneurs du peuple de Moab, et les capitaines de la côte de la mer vinrent à lui et dirent :
Then came unto him all the chief of the children of Esau, and all the governors of the people of Moab, and the captains of the sea coast, and said,
Que notre seigneur écoute maintenant une parole, afin qu'il n'y ait pas de défaite dans ton armée.
Let our lord now hear a word, that there be not an overthrow in thine army.
Car ce peuple des enfants d'Israël ne se confie pas en ses lances, mais dans la hauteur des montagnes où ils habitent, parce qu'il n'est pas facile d'arriver au sommet de leurs montagnes.
For this people of the children of Israel do not trust in their spears, but in the height of the mountains wherein they dwell, because it is not easy to come up to the tops of their mountains.
Maintenant donc, mon seigneur, ne combats pas contre eux en bataille rangée, et il ne périra pas même un seul homme de ton peuple.
Now therefore, my lord, fight not against them in battle array, and there shall not so much as one man of thy people perish.
Reste dans ton camp, et garde tous les hommes de ton armée, et que tes serviteurs s'emparent de la fontaine d'eau qui sort du pied de la montagne ;
Remain in thy camp, and keep all the men of thine army, and let thy servants get into their hands the fountain of water, which issueth forth of the foot of the mountain:
car tous les habitants de Béthulie en tirent leur eau ; ainsi la soif les tuera, et ils livreront leur ville, et nous et notre peuple nous monterons sur les sommets des montagnes voisines, et nous y camperons pour veiller à ce que personne ne sorte de la ville.
For all the inhabitants of Bethulia have their water thence; so shall thirst kill them, and they shall give up their city, and we and our people shall go up to the tops of the mountains that are near, and will camp upon them, to watch that none go out of the city.
Ainsi eux, leurs femmes et leurs enfants seront consumés par la faim, et avant que l'épée ne vienne contre eux, ils seront renversés dans les rues où ils habitent.
So they and their wives and their children shall be consumed with fire, and before the sword come against them, they shall be overthrown in the streets where they dwell.
Ainsi tu leur rendras un mauvais salaire, parce qu'ils se sont révoltés et n'ont pas accueilli ta personne avec paix.
Thus shalt thou render them an evil reward; because they rebelled, and met not thy person peaceably.
Et ces paroles plurent à Holopherne et à tous ses serviteurs, et il ordonna de faire comme ils l'avaient dit.
And these words pleased Holofernes and all his servants, and he appointed to do as they had spoken.
Ainsi le camp des enfants d'Ammon partit, et avec eux cinq mille Assyriens, et ils campèrent dans la vallée, et s'emparèrent des eaux et des fontaines des eaux des enfants d'Israël.
So the camp of the children of Ammon departed, and with them five thousand of the Assyrians, and they pitched in the valley, and took the waters, and the fountains of the waters of the children of Israel.
Alors les enfants d'Ésaü montèrent avec les enfants d'Ammon, et campèrent dans la montagne vis-à-vis de Dothaïm ; et ils en envoyèrent quelques-uns vers le midi et vers l'orient vis-à-vis d'Ekrebel, qui est près de Chousi, sur le torrent Mochmour ; et le reste de l'armée des Assyriens campa dans la plaine, et couvrit la face de tout le pays ; et leurs tentes et leurs bagages étaient dressés en une très grande multitude.
Then the children of Esau went up with the children of Ammon, and camped in the hill country over against Dothaim: and they sent some of them toward the south, and toward the east over against Ekrebel, which is near unto Chusi, that is upon the brook Mochmur; and the rest of the army of the Assyrians camped in the plain, and covered the face of the whole land; and their tents and carriages were pitched to a very great multitude.
Alors les enfants d'Israël crièrent vers le Seigneur leur Dieu, parce que leur cœur défaillait, car tous leurs ennemis les avaient environnés de toutes parts, et il n'y avait aucun moyen de s'échapper du milieu d'eux.
Then the children of Israel cried unto the Lord their God, because their heart failed, for all their enemies had compassed them round about, and there was no way to escape out from among them.
Ainsi toute la troupe d'Assur resta autour d'eux, leurs gens de pied, leurs chars et leurs cavaliers, pendant trente-quatre jours, de sorte que tous les vases d'eau manquèrent à tous les habitants de Béthulie.
Thus all the company of Assur remained about them, both their footmen, chariots, and horsemen, four and thirty days, so that all their vessels of water failed all the inhabitants of Bethulia.
Et les citernes furent vidées, et ils n'avaient pas d'eau pour boire à leur faim un seul jour ; car on leur donnait à boire par mesure.
And the cisterns were emptied, and they had not water to drink their fill for one day; for they gave them drink by measure.
C'est pourquoi leurs petits enfants étaient découragés, et leurs femmes et leurs jeunes gens défaillaient de soif, et tombaient dans les rues de la ville et aux passages des portes, et il n'y avait plus aucune force en eux.
Therefore their young children were out of heart, and their women and young men fainted for thirst, and fell down in the streets of the city, and by the passages of the gates, and there was no longer any strength in them.
Alors tout le peuple s'assembla vers Ozias et vers les chefs de la ville, les jeunes gens, les femmes et les enfants, et ils crièrent à haute voix, et dirent devant tous les anciens :
Then all the people assembled to Ozias, and to the chief of the city, both young men, and women, and children, and cried with a loud voice, and said before all the elders,
Que Dieu soit juge entre nous et vous ; car vous nous avez fait un grand tort, en ce que vous n'avez pas demandé la paix aux enfants d'Assur.
God be judge between us and you: for ye have done us great injury, in that ye have not required peace of the children of Assur.
Car maintenant nous n'avons personne pour nous aider ; mais Dieu nous a vendus entre leurs mains, pour que nous soyons terrassés devant eux par la soif et par une grande destruction.
For now we have no helper: but God hath sold us into their hands, that we should be thrown down before them with thirst and great destruction.
Maintenant donc, appelez-les à vous, et livrez toute la ville pour être pillée au peuple d'Holopherne et à toute son armée.
Now therefore call them unto you, and deliver the whole city for a spoil to the people of Holofernes, and to all his army.
Car il vaut mieux pour nous être livrés au pillage par eux, que de mourir de soif ; car nous serons ses serviteurs, afin que nos âmes vivent, et que nous ne voyions pas la mort de nos petits enfants devant nos yeux, ni nos femmes ni nos enfants mourir.
For it is better for us to be made a spoil unto them, than to die for thirst: for we will be his servants, that our souls may live, and not see the death of our infants before our eyes, nor our wives nor our children to die.
Nous prenons à témoin contre vous le ciel et la terre, et notre Dieu et le Seigneur de nos pères, qui nous punit selon nos péchés et les péchés de nos pères, afin qu'il ne soit pas fait selon ce que nous avons dit aujourd'hui.
We take to witness against you the heaven and the earth, and our God and Lord of our fathers, which punisheth us according to our sins and the sins of our fathers, that he do not according as we have said this day.
Alors il y eut de grands pleurs d'un commun accord au milieu de l'assemblée ; et ils crièrent vers le Seigneur Dieu à haute voix.
Then there was great weeping with one consent in the midst of the assembly; and they cried unto the Lord God with a loud voice.
Alors Ozias leur dit : Frères, ayez bon courage, attendons encore cinq jours, pendant lesquels le Seigneur notre Dieu pourra détourner sa miséricorde vers nous ; car il ne nous abandonnera pas entièrement.
Then said Ozias to them, Brethren, be of good courage, let us yet endure five days, in the which space the Lord our God may turn his mercy toward us; for he will not forsake us utterly.
Et si ces jours passent sans qu'il nous vienne aucun secours, je ferai selon votre parole.
And if these days pass, and there come no help unto us, I will do according to your word.
Et il dispersa le peuple, chacun à son poste ; et ils s'en allèrent sur les murailles et les tours de leur ville, et renvoyèrent les femmes et les enfants dans leurs maisons ; et ils étaient dans une grande humiliation dans la ville.
And he dispersed the people, every one to their own charge; and they went unto the walls and towers of their city, and sent the women and children into their houses: and they were very low brought in the city.
Or, en ce temps-là, Judith en entendit parler ; elle était fille de Merari, fils d'Ox, fils de Joseph, fils d'Oziel, fils d'Elcia, fils d'Ananias, fils de Gédéon, fils de Raphaïm, fils d'Achitob, fils d'Éliou, fils d'Éliab, fils de Nathanaël, fils de Samaël, fils de Salasadai, fils d'Israël.
Now at that time Judith heard thereof, which was the daughter of Merari, the son of Ox, the son of Joseph, the son of Ozel, the son of Elcia, the son of Ananias, the son of Gedeon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Acitho, the son of Eliu, the son of Eliab, the son of Nathanael, the son of Samael, the son of Salasadal, the son of Israel.
Et Manassé était son mari, de sa tribu et de sa parenté, lequel mourut au temps de la moisson des orges.
And Manasses was her husband, of her tribe and kindred, who died in the barley harvest.
Car, comme il se tenait surveillant ceux qui liaient les gerbes dans le champ, la chaleur vint sur sa tête, et il tomba sur son lit, et mourut dans la ville de Béthulie ; et on l'enterra avec ses pères dans le champ entre Dothaïm et Balamon.
For as he stood overseeing them that bound sheaves in the field, the heat came upon his head, and he fell on his bed, and died in the city of Bethulia: and they buried him with his fathers in the field between Dothaim and Balamo.
Ainsi Judith resta veuve dans sa maison pendant trois ans et quatre mois.
So Judith was a widow in her house three years and four months.
Et elle se fit une tente sur le toit de sa maison, et mit un sac sur ses reins, et portait ses vêtements de veuve.
And she made her a tent upon the top of her house, and put on sackcloth upon her loins and ware her widow’s apparel.
Et elle jeûnait tous les jours de son veuvage, excepté les veilles des sabbats et les sabbats, les veilles des nouvelles lunes et les nouvelles lunes, et les fêtes et jours de réjouissance de la maison d'Israël.
And she fasted all the days of her widowhood, save the eves of the sabbaths, and the sabbaths, and the eves of the new moons, and the new moons and the feasts and solemn days of the house of Israel.
Elle était aussi d'un bel aspect et très belle à voir ; et son mari Manassé lui avait laissé de l'or et de l'argent, des serviteurs et des servantes, du bétail et des terres ; et elle y demeurait.
She was also of a goodly countenance, and very beautiful to behold: and her husband Manasses had left her gold, and silver, and menservants and maidservants, and cattle, and lands; and she remained upon them.
Et il n'y avait personne qui lui dît une parole mauvaise, car elle craignait Dieu grandement.
And there was none that gave her an ill word; as she feared God greatly.
Or, quand elle entendit les paroles amères du peuple contre le gouverneur, parce qu'ils défaillaient par manque d'eau ; car Judith avait entendu toutes les paroles qu'Ozias leur avait dites, et qu'il avait juré de livrer la ville aux Assyriens après cinq jours ;
Now when she heard the evil words of the people against the governor, that they fainted for lack of water; for Judith had heard all the words that Ozias had spoken unto them, and that he had sworn to deliver the city unto the Assyrians after five days;
alors elle envoya sa servante, qui avait l'intendance de tout ce qu'elle possédait, pour appeler Ozias, Chabris et Charmis, les anciens de la ville.
Then she sent her waitingwoman, that had the government of all things that she had, to call Ozias and Chabris and Charmis, the ancients of the city.
Et ils vinrent vers elle, et elle leur dit : Écoutez-moi maintenant, ô vous, gouverneurs des habitants de Béthulie ; car les paroles que vous avez prononcées devant le peuple aujourd'hui ne sont pas justes, concernant ce serment que vous avez fait et prononcé entre Dieu et vous, et vous avez promis de livrer la ville à nos ennemis, à moins que dans ces jours le Seigneur ne vienne à votre aide.
And they came unto her, and she said unto them, Hear me now, O ye governors of the inhabitants of Bethulia: for your words that ye have spoken before the people this day are not right, touching this oath which ye made and pronounced between God and you, and have promised to deliver the city to our enemies, unless within these days the Lord turn to help you.
Et maintenant, qui êtes-vous pour avoir tenté Dieu en ce jour, et pour vous tenir à la place de Dieu parmi les enfants des hommes ?
And now who are ye that have tempted God this day, and stand instead of God among the children of men?
Et maintenant, vous éprouvez le Seigneur Tout-Puissant, mais vous ne saurez jamais rien.
And now try the Lord Almighty, but ye shall never know any thing.
Car vous ne pouvez sonder la profondeur du cœur de l'homme, ni percevoir les choses qu'il pense ; comment donc pouvez-vous sonder Dieu, qui a fait toutes ces choses, et connaître sa pensée, ou comprendre son dessein ? Non, mes frères, ne provoquez pas la colère du Seigneur notre Dieu.
For ye cannot find the depth of the heart of man, neither can ye perceive the things that he thinketh: then how can ye search out God, that hath made all these things, and know his mind, or comprehend his purpose? Nay, my brethren, provoke not the Lord our God to anger.
Car s'il ne veut pas nous aider dans ces cinq jours, il a le pouvoir de nous défendre quand il voudra, même chaque jour, ou de nous détruire devant nos ennemis.
For if he will not help us within these five days, he hath power to defend us when he will, even every day, or to destroy us before our enemies.
Ne liez pas les desseins du Seigneur notre Dieu ; car Dieu n'est pas comme un homme, pour être menacé, ni comme un fils d'homme, pour être chancelant.
Do not bind the counsels of the Lord our God: for God is not as man, that he may be threatened; neither is he as the son of man, that he should be wavering.
C'est pourquoi attendons de lui le salut, et invoquons-le pour qu'il nous aide, et il entendra notre voix, s'il lui plaît.
Therefore let us wait for salvation of him, and call upon him to help us, and he will hear our voice, if it please him.
Car il ne s'est élevé personne de notre temps, et il n'y a personne aujourd'hui en ces jours, ni tribu, ni famille, ni peuple, ni ville parmi nous, qui adore des dieux faits de main d'homme, comme cela se faisait autrefois.
For there arose none in our age, neither is there any now in these days neither tribe, nor family, nor people, nor city among us, which worship gods made with hands, as hath been aforetime.
C'est pour cette cause que nos pères furent livrés à l'épée et au pillage, et firent une grande chute devant nos ennemis.
For the which cause our fathers were given to the sword, and for a spoil, and had a great fall before our enemies.
Mais nous ne connaissons pas d'autre dieu ; c'est pourquoi nous espérons qu'il ne nous méprisera pas, ni aucun de notre nation.
But we know none other god, therefore we trust that he will not despise us, nor any of our nation.
Car si nous sommes ainsi pris, toute la Judée sera déserte, et notre sanctuaire sera pillé ; et il redemandera la profanation de celui-ci de notre bouche.
For if we be taken so, all Judea shall lie waste, and our sanctuary shall be spoiled; and he will require the profanation thereof at our mouth.
Et le massacre de nos frères, la captivité du pays et la désolation de notre héritage, il les fera retomber sur nos têtes parmi les nations, partout où nous serons dans l'esclavage ; et nous serons un scandale et un opprobre pour tous ceux qui nous posséderont.
And the slaughter of our brethren, and the captivity of the country, and the desolation of our inheritance, will he turn upon our heads among the Gentiles, wheresoever we shall be in bondage; and we shall be an offence and a reproach to all them that possess us.
Car notre servitude ne sera pas tournée à notre faveur ; mais le Seigneur notre Dieu la tournera à notre déshonneur.
For our servitude shall not be directed to favour: but the Lord our God shall turn it to dishonour.
Maintenant donc, ô frères, montrons un exemple à nos frères, parce que leurs cœurs dépendent de nous, et que le sanctuaire, la maison et l'autel reposent sur nous.
Now therefore, O brethren, let us shew an example to our brethren, because their hearts depend upon us, and the sanctuary, and the house, and the altar, rest upon us.
De plus, rendons grâces au Seigneur notre Dieu, qui nous éprouve, comme il l'a fait pour nos pères.
Moreover let us give thanks to the Lord our God, which trieth us, even as he did our fathers.
Souvenez-vous de ce qu'il a fait à Abraham, comment il a éprouvé Isaac, et ce qui est arrivé à Jacob en Mésopotamie de Syrie, lorsqu'il gardait les brebis de Laban, frère de sa mère.
Remember what things he did to Abraham, and how he tried Isaac, and what happened to Jacob in Mesopotamia of Syria, when he kept the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother.
Car il ne nous a pas éprouvés par le feu, comme il l'a fait pour eux, pour sonder leurs cœurs, et il n'a pas tiré vengeance de nous ; mais le Seigneur châtie ceux qui s'approchent de lui, pour les avertir.
For he hath not tried us in the fire, as he did them, for the examination of their hearts, neither hath he taken vengeance on us: but the Lord doth scourge them that come near unto him, to admonish them.
Alors Ozias lui dit : Tout ce que tu as dit, tu l'as dit avec un bon cœur, et il n'y a personne qui puisse contredire tes paroles.
Then said Ozias to her, All that thou hast spoken hast thou spoken with a good heart, and there is none that may gainsay thy words.
Car ce n'est pas d'aujourd'hui que ta sagesse est manifestée ; mais dès le commencement de tes jours tout le peuple a connu ton intelligence, parce que la disposition de ton cœur est bonne.
For this is not the first day wherein thy wisdom is manifested; but from the beginning of thy days all the people have known thy understanding, because the disposition of thine heart is good.
Mais le peuple avait très soif, et ils nous ont contraints de faire comme nous l'avons dit, et de nous lier par un serment que nous ne romprons pas.
But the people were very thirsty, and compelled us to do unto them as we have spoken, and to bring an oath upon ourselves, which we will not break.
Maintenant donc, prie pour nous, car tu es une femme pieuse, et le Seigneur nous enverra de la pluie pour remplir nos citernes, et nous ne défaillirons plus.
Therefore now pray thou for us, because thou art a godly woman, and the Lord will send us rain to fill our cisterns, and we shall faint no more.
Alors Judith leur dit : Écoutez-moi, et je ferai une chose qui passera de génération en génération aux enfants de notre nation.
Then said Judith unto them, Hear me, and I will do a thing, which shall go throughout all generations to the children of our nation.
Vous vous tiendrez cette nuit à la porte, et je sortirai avec ma servante ; et dans les jours que vous avez promis pour livrer la ville à nos ennemis, le Seigneur visitera Israël par ma main.
Ye shall stand this night in the gate, and I will go forth with my waitingwoman: and within the days that ye have promised to deliver the city to our enemies the Lord will visit Israel by mine hand.
Mais ne vous informez pas de mon action ; car je ne vous la déclarerai pas, jusqu'à ce que les choses que je fais soient achevées.
But enquire not ye of mine act: for I will not declare it unto you, till the things be finished that I do.
Alors Ozias et les princes lui dirent : Va en paix, et que le Seigneur Dieu soit devant toi, pour tirer vengeance de nos ennemis.
Then said Ozias and the princes unto her, Go in peace, and the Lord God be before thee, to take vengeance on our enemies.
Ils s'en retournèrent donc de la tente et s'en allèrent à leurs postes.
So they returned from the tent, and went to their wards.
Judith se prosterna la face contre terre, mit de la cendre sur sa tête et découvrit le sac dont elle était vêtue ; et vers le temps où l'on offrait l'encens du soir à Jérusalem dans la maison du Seigneur, Judith cria d'une voix forte et dit :
Judith fell upon her face, and put ashes upon her head, and uncovered the sackcloth wherewith she was clothed; and about the time that the incense of that evening was offered in Jerusalem in the house of the Lord Judith cried with a loud voice, and said,
Seigneur, Dieu de mon père Siméon, à qui tu as donné une épée pour tirer vengeance des étrangers qui avaient délié la ceinture d'une vierge pour la souiller, et découvert sa cuisse pour sa honte, et pollué sa virginité pour son opprobre ; car tu avais dit : Cela ne sera pas ainsi ; et pourtant ils l'ont fait.
O Lord God of my father Simeon, to whom thou gavest a sword to take vengeance of the strangers, who loosened the girdle of a maid to defile her, and discovered the thigh to her shame, and polluted her virginity to her reproach; for thou saidst, It shall not be so; and yet they did so:
C'est pourquoi tu as livré leurs chefs au carnage, de sorte qu'ils ont arrosé leur lit de sang, étant trompés, et tu as frappé les serviteurs avec leurs maîtres, et les maîtres sur leurs trônes ;
Wherefore thou gavest their rulers to be slain, so that they dyed their bed in blood, being deceived, and smotest the servants with their lords, and the lords upon their thrones;
et tu as livré leurs femmes au pillage, et leurs filles à la captivité, et toutes leurs dépouilles pour être partagées entre tes enfants bien-aimés, qui ont été mus par ton zèle, et ont eu en horreur la souillure de leur sang, et t'ont appelé à leur aide : ô Dieu, ô mon Dieu, exauce-moi aussi, moi qui suis veuve.
And hast given their wives for a prey, and their daughters to be captives, and all their spoils to be divided among thy dear children; which were moved with thy zeal, and abhorred the pollution of their blood, and called upon thee for aid: O God, O my God, hear me also a widow.
Car tu as opéré non seulement ces choses, mais aussi celles qui sont arrivées auparavant et celles qui ont suivi ; tu as pensé aux choses qui sont maintenant et à celles qui sont à venir.
For thou hast wrought not only those things, but also the things which fell out before, and which ensued after; thou hast thought upon the things which are now, and which are to come.
Oui, les choses que tu as résolues se sont présentées et ont dit : Voici, nous sommes ici ; car toutes tes voies sont préparées, et tes jugements sont dans ta prescience.
Yea, what things thou didst determine were ready at hand, and said, Lo, we are here: for all thy ways are prepared, and thy judgments are in thy foreknowledge.
Car voici, les Assyriens se sont multipliés dans leur puissance ; ils se sont élevés avec leurs chevaux et leurs cavaliers ; ils se glorifient dans la force de leurs gens de pied ; ils se confient dans le bouclier, la lance, l'arc et la fronde ; et ils ne savent pas que tu es le Seigneur qui brises les guerres : le Seigneur est ton nom.
For, behold, the Assyrians are multiplied in their power; they are exalted with horse and man; they glory in the strength of their footmen; they trust in shield, and spear, and bow, and sling; and know not that thou art the Lord that breakest the battles: the Lord is thy name.
Renverse leur force par ta puissance, et abats leur vigueur dans ta fureur ; car ils ont résolu de souiller ton sanctuaire, de polluer le tabernacle où repose ton nom glorieux, et d'abattre par l'épée la corne de ton autel.
Throw down their strength in thy power, and bring down their force in thy wrath: for they have purposed to defile thy sanctuary, and to pollute the tabernacle where thy glorious name resteth and to cast down with sword the horn of thy altar.
Regarde leur orgueil, et envoie ta colère sur leurs têtes ; donne entre mes mains, à moi qui suis veuve, la force que j'ai conçue.
Behold their pride, and send thy wrath upon their heads: give into mine hand, which am a widow, the power that I have conceived.
Frappe par la ruse de mes lèvres le serviteur avec le prince, et le prince avec le serviteur ; brise leur superbe par la main d'une femme.
Smite by the deceit of my lips the servant with the prince, and the prince with the servant: break down their stateliness by the hand of a woman.
Car ta puissance ne réside pas dans la multitude, ni ta force dans les hommes vigoureux ; car tu es le Dieu des affligés, le secours des opprimés, le soutien des faibles, le protecteur des délaissés, le sauveur de ceux qui sont sans espérance.
For thy power standeth not in multitude nor thy might in strong men: for thou art a God of the afflicted, an helper of the oppressed, an upholder of the weak, a protector of the forlorn, a saviour of them that are without hope.
Je te prie, je te prie, ô Dieu de mon père, et Dieu de l'héritage d'Israël, Seigneur des cieux et de la terre, Créateur des eaux, Roi de toute créature, exauce ma prière ;
I pray thee, I pray thee, O God of my father, and God of the inheritance of Israel, Lord of the heavens and earth, Creator of the waters, king of every creature, hear thou my prayer:
et fais que ma parole et ma ruse soient leur blessure et leur plaie, eux qui ont résolu des choses cruelles contre ton alliance, contre ta maison sainte, contre le sommet de Sion et contre la maison de la possession de tes enfants.
And make my speech and deceit to be their wound and stripe, who have purposed cruel things against thy covenant, and thy hallowed house, and against the top of Sion, and against the house of the possession of thy children.
Et fais que toute nation et toute tribu reconnaissent que tu es le Dieu de toute puissance et de toute force, et qu'il n'y en a point d'autre qui protège le peuple d'Israël que toi seul.
And make every nation and tribe to acknowledge that thou art the God of all power and might, and that there is none other that protecteth the people of Israel but thou.
Or, après qu'elle eut cessé de crier vers le Dieu d'Israël, et qu'elle eut achevé toutes ces paroles,
Now after that she had ceased to cry unto the God of Israel, and had made an end of all these words.
elle se leva de l'endroit où elle s'était prosternée, appela sa servante et descendit dans la maison où elle demeurait les jours de sabbat et les jours de fête,
She rose where she had fallen down, and called her maid, and went down into the house in the which she abode in the sabbath days, and in her feast days,
et elle ôta le sac dont elle était vêtue, quitta ses vêtements de veuvage, lava tout son corps avec de l'eau, s'oignit d'un onguent précieux, tressa les cheveux de sa tête, y mit un diadème et revêtit ses vêtements de joie, dont elle s'était parée pendant la vie de Manassé son mari.
And pulled off the sackcloth which she had on, and put off the garments of her widowhood, and washed her body all over with water, and anointed herself with precious ointment, and braided the hair of her head, and put on a tire upon it, and put on her garments of gladness, wherewith she was clad during the life of Manasses her husband.
Et elle mit des sandales à ses pieds, et se para de ses bracelets, de ses chaînettes, de ses anneaux, de ses boucles d'oreilles et de tous ses ornements, et elle se para magnifiquement pour attirer les yeux de tous les hommes qui la verraient.
And she took sandals upon her feet, and put about her her bracelets, and her chains, and her rings, and her earrings, and all her ornaments, and decked herself bravely, to allure the eyes of all men that should see her.
Puis elle donna à sa servante une outre de vin et une cruche d'huile, et remplit un sac de grain rôti, de masses de figues et de pain blanc ; elle enveloppa toutes ces choses ensemble et les lui chargea sur elle.
Then she gave her maid a bottle of wine, and a cruse of oil, and filled a bag with parched corn, and lumps of figs, and with fine bread; so she folded all these things together, and laid them upon her.
Elles s'en allèrent ainsi vers la porte de la ville de Béthulie, et y trouvèrent Ozias et les anciens de la ville, Chabris et Charmis.
Thus they went forth to the gate of the city of Bethulia, and found standing there Ozias and the ancients of the city, Chabris and Charmis.
Et quand ils la virent, que son visage était changé et ses vêtements différents, ils admirèrent sa beauté avec un très grand étonnement, et lui dirent :
And when they saw her, that her countenance was altered, and her apparel was changed, they wondered at her beauty very greatly, and said unto her.
Que le Dieu, le Dieu de nos pères, te fasse trouver grâce, et qu'il accomplisse tes desseins pour la gloire des enfants d'Israël et pour l'exaltation de Jérusalem. Alors ils adorèrent Dieu.
The God, the God of our fathers give thee favour, and accomplish thine enterprizes to the glory of the children of Israel, and to the exaltation of Jerusalem. Then they worshipped God.
Et elle leur dit : Ordonnez qu'on m'ouvre les portes de la ville, afin que je sorte pour accomplir les choses dont vous m'avez parlé. Ils ordonnèrent donc aux jeunes gens de lui ouvrir, comme elle l'avait dit.
And she said unto them, Command the gates of the city to be opened unto me, that I may go forth to accomplish the things whereof ye have spoken with me. So they commanded the young men to open unto her, as she had spoken.
Et quand ils l'eurent fait, Judith sortit, elle et sa servante avec elle ; et les hommes de la ville la suivirent des yeux jusqu'à ce qu'elle fût descendue de la montagne, et qu'elle eût passé la vallée, et ils ne purent plus la voir.
And when they had done so, Judith went out, she, and her maid with her; and the men of the city looked after her, until she was gone down the mountain, and till she had passed the valley, and could see her no more.
Elles marchèrent ainsi droit devant elles dans la vallée ; et la première garde des Assyriens la rencontra,
Thus they went straight forth in the valley: and the first watch of the Assyrians met her,
et ils se saisirent d'elle et l'interrogèrent : De quel peuple es-tu ? d'où viens-tu ? et où vas-tu ? Et elle dit : Je suis une femme d'entre les Hébreux, et je m'enfuis de chez eux, car ils vous seront livrés pour être consumés ;
And took her, and asked her, Of what people art thou? and whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she said, I am a woman of the Hebrews, and am fled from them: for they shall be given you to be consumed:
et je viens devant Holopherne, le chef de votre armée, pour lui dire des paroles de vérité ; et je lui montrerai un chemin par lequel il pourra passer et se rendre maître de toute la montagne, sans perdre le corps ni la vie d'aucun de ses hommes.
And I am coming before Holofernes the chief captain of your army, to declare words of truth; and I will shew him a way, whereby he shall go, and win all the hill country, without losing the body or life of any one of his men.
Or, quand ces hommes entendirent ses paroles et regardèrent son visage, ils admirèrent grandement sa beauté et lui dirent :
Now when the men heard her words, and beheld her countenance, they wondered greatly at her beauty, and said unto her,
Tu as sauvé ta vie en te hâtant de descendre vers la présence de notre seigneur ; maintenant donc, viens à sa tente, et quelques-uns d'entre nous te conduiront jusqu'à ce qu'ils t'aient remise entre ses mains.
Thou hast saved thy life, in that thou hast hasted to come down to the presence of our lord: now therefore come to his tent, and some of us shall conduct thee, until they have delivered thee to his hands.
Et quand tu seras devant lui, n'aie pas peur en ton cœur, mais parle-lui selon ta parole, et il te traitera bien.
And when thou standest before him, be not afraid in thine heart, but shew unto him according to thy word; and he will entreat thee well.
Alors ils choisirent parmi eux cent hommes pour l'accompagner, elle et sa servante ; et ils la menèrent à la tente d'Holopherne.
Then they chose out of them an hundred men to accompany her and her maid; and they brought her to the tent of Holofernes.
Alors il y eut un grand rassemblement dans tout le camp ; car sa venue s'était ébruitée parmi les tentes, et ils l'entourèrent pendant qu'elle se tenait hors de la tente d'Holopherne, jusqu'à ce qu'on l'eût annoncé.
Then was there a concourse throughout all the camp: for her coming was noised among the tents, and they came about her, as she stood without the tent of Holofernes, till they told him of her.
Et ils admiraient sa beauté, et à cause d'elle ils admiraient les enfants d'Israël, et chacun disait à son prochain : Qui mépriserait ce peuple, qui a parmi lui de telles femmes ? Certes, il n'est pas bon qu'il en reste un seul homme, car, si on les laissait aller, ils pourraient tromper toute la terre.
And they wondered at her beauty, and admired the children of Israel because of her, and every one said to his neighbour, Who would despise this people, that have among them such women? surely it is not good that one man of them be left who being let go might deceive the whole earth.
Et ceux qui étaient proches d'Holopherne sortirent, ainsi que tous ses serviteurs, et ils l'introduisirent dans la tente.
And they that lay near Holofernes went out, and all his servants and they brought her into the tent.
Or Holopherne reposait sur son lit sous un pavillon qui était tissé de pourpre, d'or, d'émeraudes et de pierres précieuses.
Now Holofernes rested upon his bed under a canopy, which was woven with purple, and gold, and emeralds, and precious stones.
On lui parla donc d'elle ; et il sortit devant sa tente, précédé de lampes d'argent.
So they shewed him of her; and he came out before his tent with silver lamps going before him.
Et quand Judith fut venue devant lui et devant ses serviteurs, ils s'étonnèrent tous de la beauté de son visage ; et elle se prosterna la face contre terre et lui rendit hommage ; et ses serviteurs la relevèrent.
And when Judith was come before him and his servants they all marvelled at the beauty of her countenance; and she fell down upon her face, and did reverence unto him: and his servants took her up.
Alors Holopherne lui dit : Femme, rassure-toi, n'aie pas peur en ton cœur ; car je n'ai jamais fait de mal à quiconque a voulu servir Nabuchodonosor, le roi de toute la terre.
Then said Holofernes unto her, Woman, be of good comfort, fear not in thine heart: for I never hurt any that was willing to serve Nabuchodonosor, the king of all the earth.
Maintenant donc, si ton peuple qui habite dans la montagne ne m'avait pas méprisé, je n'aurais pas levé ma lance contre eux ; mais ils se sont fait ces choses à eux-mêmes.
Now therefore, if thy people that dwelleth in the mountains had not set light by me, I would not have lifted up my spear against them: but they have done these things to themselves.
Mais maintenant, dis-moi pourquoi tu t'es enfuie de chez eux et es venue vers nous ; car tu es venue pour ton salut ; rassure-toi, tu vivras cette nuit et à l'avenir ;
But now tell me wherefore thou art fled from them, and art come unto us: for thou art come for safeguard; be of good comfort, thou shalt live this night, and hereafter:
car personne ne te fera de mal, mais on te traitera bien, comme on traite les serviteurs du roi Nabuchodonosor mon seigneur.
For none shall hurt thee, but entreat thee well, as they do the servants of king Nabuchodonosor my lord.
Alors Judith lui dit : Reçois les paroles de ta servante, et permets à ton esclave de parler en ta présence, et je ne dirai aucun mensonge à mon seigneur cette nuit.
Then Judith said unto him, Receive the words of thy servant, and suffer thine handmaid to speak in thy presence, and I will declare no lie to my lord this night.
Et si tu veux suivre les paroles de ta servante, Dieu accomplira parfaitement la chose par toi, et mon seigneur ne faillira pas dans ses desseins.
And if thou wilt follow the words of thine handmaid, God will bring the thing perfectly to pass by thee; and my lord shall not fail of his purposes.
Aussi vrai que vit Nabuchodonosor, roi de toute la terre, et que vit sa puissance, lui qui t'a envoyé pour le maintien de tout être vivant ; car non seulement les hommes le serviront par toi, mais aussi les bêtes des champs, le bétail et les oiseaux du ciel vivront par ta puissance sous Nabuchodonosor et toute sa maison.
As Nabuchodonosor king of all the earth liveth, and as his power liveth, who hath sent thee for the upholding of every living thing: for not only men shall serve him by thee, but also the beasts of the field, and the cattle, and the fowls of the air, shall live by thy power under Nabuchodonosor and all his house.
Car nous avons entendu parler de ta sagesse et de ta prudence, et il est rapporté dans toute la terre que toi seul es excellent dans tout le royaume, puissant en savoir et admirable dans les faits de guerre.
For we have heard of thy wisdom and thy policies, and it is reported in all the earth, that thou only art excellent in all the kingdom, and mighty in knowledge, and wonderful in feats of war.
Quant à ce qu'Achior a dit dans ton conseil, nous avons entendu ses paroles ; car les hommes de Béthulie l'ont sauvé, et il leur a déclaré tout ce qu'il t'avait dit.
Now as concerning the matter, which Achior did speak in thy council, we have heard his words; for the men of Bethulia saved him, and he declared unto them all that he had spoken unto thee.
C'est pourquoi, ô seigneur et gouverneur, ne méprise pas sa parole, mais garde-la dans ton cœur, car elle est vraie ; car notre nation ne sera pas punie, et l'épée ne prévaudra pas contre eux, à moins qu'ils ne pèchent contre leur Dieu.
Therefore, O lord and governor, respect not his word; but lay it up in thine heart, for it is true: for our nation shall not be punished, neither can sword prevail against them, except they sin against their God.
Et maintenant, afin que mon seigneur ne soit pas déçu et frustré dans son dessein, la mort même est tombée sur eux, et leur péché les a surpris, par lequel ils provoqueront la colère de leur Dieu toutes les fois qu'ils feront ce qui ne doit pas être fait ;
And now, that my lord be not defeated and frustrate of his purpose, even death is now fallen upon them, and their sin hath overtaken them, wherewith they will provoke their God to anger whensoever they shall do that which is not fit to be done:
car les vivres leur manquent, et toute leur eau est épuisée, et ils ont résolu de mettre la main sur leur bétail, et ont dessein de consommer toutes les choses que Dieu leur a défendu de manger par ses lois ;
For their victuals fail them, and all their water is scant, and they have determined to lay hands upon their cattle, and purposed to consume all those things, that God hath forbidden them to eat by his laws:
et ils sont résolus de dépenser les prémices et les dîmes du vin et de l'huile, qu'ils avaient sanctifiées et réservées pour les prêtres qui servent à Jérusalem devant la face de notre Dieu ; lesquelles choses il n'est permis à personne du peuple de toucher même de ses mains.
And are resolved to spend the firstfruits of the the tenths of wine and oil, which they had sanctified, and reserved for the priests that serve in Jerusalem before the face of our God; the which things it is not lawful for any of the people so much as to touch with their hands.
Car ils en ont envoyé quelques-uns à Jérusalem, parce que ceux qui y habitent ont fait de même, pour leur en rapporter une permission du sénat.
For they have sent some to Jerusalem, because they also that dwell there have done the like, to bring them a licence from the senate.
Or, quand on leur en apportera la nouvelle, ils le feront aussitôt, et ils te seront livrés pour être détruits le jour même.
Now when they shall bring them word, they will forthwith do it, and they shall be given to thee to be destroyed the same day.
C'est pourquoi moi, ta servante, sachant tout cela, je me suis enfuie de leur présence ; et Dieu m'a envoyée pour faire avec toi des choses dont toute la terre sera étonnée, et quiconque les entendra.
Wherefore I thine handmaid, knowing all this, am fled from their presence; and God hath sent me to work things with thee, whereat all the earth shall be astonished, and whosoever shall hear it.
Car ta servante est pieuse, et sert le Dieu du ciel jour et nuit ; maintenant donc, mon seigneur, je resterai avec toi, et ta servante sortira de nuit dans la vallée, et je prierai Dieu, et il me dira quand ils auront commis leurs péchés ;
For thy servant is religious, and serveth the God of heaven day and night: now therefore, my lord, I will remain with thee, and thy servant will go out by night into the valley, and I will pray unto God, and he will tell me when they have committed their sins:
et je viendrai te le montrer ; alors tu sortiras avec toute ton armée, et il n'y aura aucun d'eux qui te résiste.
And I will come and shew it unto thee: then thou shalt go forth with all thine army, and there shall be none of them that shall resist thee.
Et je te conduirai par le milieu de la Judée, jusqu'à ce que tu viennes devant Jérusalem ; et je placerai ton trône au milieu d'elle ; et tu les mèneras comme des brebis qui n'ont point de berger, et un chien n'ouvrira pas même la gueule contre toi ; car ces choses m'ont été dites selon ma prescience, et elles m'ont été déclarées, et je suis envoyée pour te les dire.
And I will lead thee through the midst of Judea, until thou come before Jerusalem; and I will set thy throne in the midst thereof; and thou shalt drive them as sheep that have no shepherd, and a dog shall not so much as open his mouth at thee: for these things were told me according to my foreknowledge, and they were declared unto me, and I am sent to tell thee.
Alors ses paroles plurent à Holopherne et à tous ses serviteurs ; et ils admirèrent sa sagesse et dirent :
Then her words pleased Holofernes and all his servants; and they marvelled at her wisdom, and said,
Il n'y a pas une telle femme d'une extrémité de la terre à l'autre, tant pour la beauté du visage que pour la sagesse des paroles.
There is not such a woman from one end of the earth to the other, both for beauty of face, and wisdom of words.
De même Holopherne lui dit : Dieu a bien fait de t'envoyer devant le peuple, afin que la force soit entre nos mains et la destruction sur ceux qui méprisent mon seigneur.
Likewise Holofernes said unto her. God hath done well to send thee before the people, that strength might be in our hands and destruction upon them that lightly regard my lord.
Et maintenant, tu es belle de visage et spirituelle dans tes paroles ; certes, si tu fais comme tu l'as dit, ton Dieu sera mon Dieu, et tu habiteras dans la maison du roi Nabuchodonosor, et tu seras renommée par toute la terre.
And now thou art both beautiful in thy countenance, and witty in thy words: surely if thou do as thou hast spoken thy God shall be my God, and thou shalt dwell in the house of king Nabuchodonosor, and shalt be renowned through the whole earth.
Alors il commanda de l'introduire là où était dressée sa vaisselle, et ordonna qu'on lui préparât de ses propres mets et qu'elle bût de son propre vin.
Then he commanded to bring her in where his plate was set; and bade that they should prepare for her of his own meats, and that she should drink of his own wine.
Et Judith dit : Je n'en mangerai point, de peur que ce ne soit une offense ; mais on me servira des choses que j'ai apportées.
And Judith said, I will not eat thereof, lest there be an offence: but provision shall be made for me of the things that I have brought.
Alors Holopherne lui dit : Si tes provisions venaient à manquer, comment pourrions-nous t'en donner de semblables ? car il n'y a personne de ta nation avec nous.
Then Holofernes said unto her, If thy provision should fail, how should we give thee the like? for there be none with us of thy nation.
Alors Judith lui dit : Aussi vrai que ton âme vit, mon seigneur, ta servante n'aura pas dépensé ce que j'ai, avant que le Seigneur n'ait accompli par ma main les choses qu'il a résolues.
Then said Judith unto him As thy soul liveth, my lord, thine handmaid shall not spend those things that I have, before the Lord work by mine hand the things that he hath determined.
Alors les serviteurs d'Holopherne l'introduisirent dans la tente, et elle dormit jusqu'à minuit, et elle se leva vers la veille du matin,
Then the servants of Holofernes brought her into the tent, and she slept till midnight, and she arose when it was toward the morning watch,
et elle envoya dire à Holopherne : Que mon seigneur commande maintenant qu'on laisse sortir ta servante pour la prière.
And sent to Holofernes, saving, Let my lord now command that thine handmaid may go forth unto prayer.
Alors Holopherne commanda à sa garde de ne pas l'empêcher ; elle resta ainsi trois jours dans le camp, et sortait la nuit dans la vallée de Béthulie, et se lavait dans une fontaine d'eau près du camp.
Then Holofernes commanded his guard that they should not stay her: thus she abode in the camp three days, and went out in the night into the valley of Bethulia, and washed herself in a fountain of water by the camp.
Et quand elle sortait, elle suppliait le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël de diriger sa voie pour le relèvement des enfants de son peuple.
And when she came out, she besought the Lord God of Israel to direct her way to the raising up of the children of her people.
Ainsi elle rentrait pure, et restait dans la tente jusqu'à ce qu'elle prît sa nourriture le soir.
So she came in clean, and remained in the tent, until she did eat her meat at evening.
Et le quatrième jour, Holopherne fit un festin pour ses seuls serviteurs, et n'appela aucun des officiers au banquet.
And in the fourth day Holofernes made a feast to his own servants only, and called none of the officers to the banquet.
Alors il dit à Bagoas, l'eunuque qui avait l'intendance de tout ce qu'il possédait : Va maintenant, et persuade cette femme hébreue qui est avec toi de venir vers nous, et de manger et boire avec nous.
Then said he to Bagoas the eunuch, who had charge over all that he had, Go now, and persuade this Hebrew woman which is with thee, that she come unto us, and eat and drink with us.
Car voici, ce sera une honte pour notre personne si nous laissons partir une telle femme sans avoir joui de sa compagnie ; car si nous ne l'attirons pas à nous, elle se moquera de nous.
For, lo, it will be a shame for our person, if we shall let such a woman go, not having had her company; for if we draw her not unto us, she will laugh us to scorn.
Alors Bagoas sortit de la présence d'Holopherne, vint vers elle et dit : Que cette belle jeune fille ne craigne pas de venir vers mon seigneur, pour être honorée en sa présence, boire du vin et se réjouir avec nous, et être traitée aujourd'hui comme l'une des filles des Assyriens qui servent dans la maison de Nabuchodonosor.
Then went Bagoas from the presence of Holofernes, and came to her, and he said, Let not this fair damsel fear to come to my lord, and to be honoured in his presence, and drink wine, and be merry with us and be made this day as one of the daughters of the Assyrians, which serve in the house of Nabuchodonosor.
Alors Judith lui dit : Qui suis-je maintenant pour contredire mon seigneur ? Certes, tout ce qui lui plaira, je le ferai promptement, et ce sera ma joie jusqu'au jour de ma mort.
Then said Judith unto him, Who am I now, that I should gainsay my lord? surely whatsoever pleaseth him I will do speedily, and it shall be my joy unto the day of my death.
Elle se leva donc et se para de ses vêtements et de toute sa parure de femme ; et sa servante alla étendre à terre pour elle des peaux douces vis-à-vis d'Holopherne, qu'elle avait reçues de Bagoas pour son usage quotidien, afin qu'elle pût s'y asseoir et manger.
So she arose, and decked herself with her apparel and all her woman’s attire, and her maid went and laid soft skins on the ground for her over against Holofernes, which she had received of Bagoas far her daily use, that she might sit and eat upon them.
Or, quand Judith entra et s'assit, le cœur d'Holopherne fut ravi d'elle, son esprit fut troublé, et il désira grandement sa compagnie ; car il attendait l'occasion de la séduire depuis le jour où il l'avait vue.
Now when Judith came in and sat down, Holofernes his heart was ravished with her, and his mind was moved, and he desired greatly her company; for he waited a time to deceive her, from the day that he had seen her.
Alors Holopherne lui dit : Bois maintenant, et réjouis-toi avec nous.
Then said Holofernes unto her, Drink now, and be merry with us.
Et Judith dit : Je boirai maintenant, mon seigneur, car ma vie est plus honorée en moi aujourd'hui qu'en tous les jours depuis que je suis née.
So Judith said, I will drink now, my lord, because my life is magnified in me this day more than all the days since I was born.
Alors elle prit, et mangea et but devant lui ce que sa servante avait préparé.
Then she took and ate and drank before him what her maid had prepared.
Et Holopherne prit un grand plaisir en elle, et but plus de vin qu'il n'en avait jamais bu en un seul jour depuis qu'il était né.
And Holofernes took great delight in her, and drank more wine than he had drunk at any time in one day since he was born.
Or, quand le soir fut venu, ses serviteurs se hâtèrent de partir, et Bagoas ferma sa tente par-dehors, et renvoya ceux qui servaient de la présence de son seigneur ; et ils s'en allèrent à leurs lits, car ils étaient tous fatigués, parce que le festin avait été long.
Now when the evening was come, his servants made haste to depart, and Bagoas shut his tent without, and dismissed the waiters from the presence of his lord; and they went to their beds: for they were all weary, because the feast had been long.
Et Judith fut laissée seule dans la tente, et Holopherne était étendu sur son lit, car il était rempli de vin.
And Judith was left along in the tent, and Holofernes lying along upon his bed: for he was filled with wine.
Or Judith avait commandé à sa servante de se tenir hors de sa chambre à coucher, et d'attendre sa sortie, comme elle le faisait chaque jour ; car elle avait dit qu'elle sortirait pour ses prières, et elle en avait parlé à Bagoas dans le même but.
Now Judith had commanded her maid to stand without her bedchamber, and to wait for her. coming forth, as she did daily: for she said she would go forth to her prayers, and she spake to Bagoas according to the same purpose.
Ainsi tous sortirent, et il n'en resta aucun dans la chambre à coucher, ni petit ni grand. Alors Judith, se tenant près de son lit, dit en son cœur : Seigneur, Dieu de toute puissance, regarde en ce moment les œuvres de mes mains pour l'exaltation de Jérusalem.
So all went forth and none was left in the bedchamber, neither little nor great. Then Judith, standing by his bed, said in her heart, O Lord God of all power, look at this present upon the works of mine hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem.
Car voici maintenant le temps de secourir ton héritage, et d'exécuter tes desseins pour la destruction des ennemis qui se sont levés contre nous.
For now is the time to help thine inheritance, and to execute thine enterprizes to the destruction of the enemies which are risen against us.
Alors elle s'approcha de la colonne du lit qui était à la tête d'Holopherne, et en détacha son cimeterre,
Then she came to the pillar of the bed, which was at Holofernes’ head, and took down his fauchion from thence,
et s'approchant de son lit, elle le prit par les cheveux de sa tête et dit : Fortifie-moi, Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, en ce jour.
And approached to his bed, and took hold of the hair of his head, and said, Strengthen me, O Lord God of Israel, this day.
Et elle frappa deux fois son cou de toute sa force, et elle lui enleva la tête.
And she smote twice upon his neck with all her might, and she took away his head from him.
Et elle fit rouler son corps hors du lit, et détacha le pavillon des colonnes ; et peu après elle sortit, et donna la tête d'Holopherne à sa servante ;
And tumbled his body down from the bed, and pulled down the canopy from the pillars; and anon after she went forth, and gave Holofernes his head to her maid;
et celle-ci la mit dans son sac à provisions ; ainsi elles s'en allèrent toutes deux ensemble, selon leur coutume, pour la prière ; et quand elles eurent passé le camp, elles contournèrent la vallée, montèrent la montagne de Béthulie et arrivèrent à ses portes.
And she put it in her bag of meat: so they twain went together according to their custom unto prayer: and when they passed the camp, they compassed the valley, and went up the mountain of Bethulia, and came to the gates thereof.
Alors Judith dit de loin aux sentinelles de la porte : Ouvrez, ouvrez maintenant la porte ; Dieu, notre Dieu même, est avec nous pour montrer encore sa puissance en Jérusalem et sa force contre l'ennemi, comme il l'a fait en ce jour.
Then said Judith afar off, to the watchmen at the gate, Open, open now the gate: God, even our God, is with us, to shew his power yet in Jerusalem, and his forces against the enemy, as he hath even done this day.
Or, quand les hommes de sa ville entendirent sa voix, ils se hâtèrent de descendre à la porte de leur ville, et ils appelèrent les anciens de la ville.
Now when the men of her city heard her voice, they made haste to go down to the gate of their city, and they called the elders of the city.
Et alors ils accoururent tous ensemble, petits et grands, car il leur paraissait étrange qu'elle fût revenue ; ils ouvrirent donc la porte, les reçurent, firent un feu pour s'éclairer et les entourèrent.
And then they ran all together, both small and great, for it was strange unto them that she was come: so they opened the gate, and received them, and made a fire for a light, and stood round about them.
Alors elle leur dit d'une voix forte : Louez, louez Dieu, louez Dieu, dis-je, car il n'a pas retiré sa miséricorde de la maison d'Israël, mais il a détruit nos ennemis par mes mains cette nuit.
Then she said to them with a loud voice, Praise, praise God, praise God, I say, for he hath not taken away his mercy from the house of Israel, but hath destroyed our enemies by mine hands this night.
Elle tira donc la tête du sac, la montra et leur dit : Voici la tête d'Holopherne, le chef de l'armée d'Assur, et voici le pavillon sous lequel il était couché dans son ivresse ; et le Seigneur l'a frappé par la main d'une femme.
So she took the head out of the bag, and shewed it, and said unto them, behold the head of Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Assur, and behold the canopy, wherein he did lie in his drunkenness; and the Lord hath smitten him by the hand of a woman.
Aussi vrai que le Seigneur vit, lui qui m'a gardée dans la voie où j'ai marché, mon visage l'a trompé pour sa destruction, et pourtant il n'a pas commis de péché avec moi, pour me souiller et me couvrir de honte.
As the Lord liveth, who hath kept me in my way that I went, my countenance hath deceived him to his destruction, and yet hath he not committed sin with me, to defile and shame me.
Alors tout le peuple fut dans un étonnement admirable, et ils se prosternèrent et adorèrent Dieu, et dirent d'un commun accord : Béni sois-tu, ô notre Dieu, qui as aujourd'hui réduit à néant les ennemis de ton peuple.
Then all the people were wonderfully astonished, and bowed themselves and worshipped God, and said with one accord, Blessed be thou, O our God, which hast this day brought to nought the enemies of thy people.
Alors Ozias lui dit : Ô fille, tu es bénie du Dieu Très-Haut au-dessus de toutes les femmes de la terre ; et béni soit le Seigneur Dieu, qui a créé les cieux et la terre, et qui t'a dirigée pour couper la tête du chef de nos ennemis.
Then said Ozias unto her, O daughter, blessed art thou of the most high God above all the women upon the earth; and blessed be the Lord God, which hath created the heavens and the earth, which hath directed thee to the cutting off of the head of the chief of our enemies.
Car cette confiance qui est la tienne ne s'éloignera pas du cœur des hommes qui se souviennent de la puissance de Dieu pour toujours.
For this thy confidence shall not depart from the heart of men, which remember the power of God for ever.
Et que Dieu tourne ces choses à ta louange perpétuelle, pour te visiter en biens, parce que tu n'as pas épargné ta vie pour l'affliction de notre nation, mais que tu as vengé notre ruine, marchant par une voie droite devant notre Dieu. Et tout le peuple dit : Amen, amen.
And God turn these things to thee for a perpetual praise, to visit thee in good things because thou hast not spared thy life for the affliction of our nation, but hast revenged our ruin, walking a straight way before our God. And all the people said; So be it, so be it.
Alors Judith leur dit : Écoutez-moi maintenant, mes frères, et prenez cette tête, et suspendez-la au lieu le plus élevé de vos murailles.
Then said Judith unto them, Hear me now, my brethren, and take this head, and hang it upon the highest place of your walls.
Et dès que le matin paraîtra et que le soleil sortira sur la terre, prenez chacun vos armes, et que tout homme vaillant sorte de la ville ; et mettez un chef à leur tête, comme si vous vouliez descendre dans la plaine vers la garde des Assyriens ; mais ne descendez pas.
And so soon as the morning shall appear, and the sun shall come forth upon the earth, take ye every one his weapons, and go forth every valiant man out of the city, and set ye a captain over them, as though ye would go down into the field toward the watch of the Assyrians; but go not down.
Alors ils prendront leurs armes, et iront dans leur camp, et réveilleront les chefs de l'armée d'Assur, et ils courront à la tente d'Holopherne, mais ils ne le trouveront pas ; alors la peur tombera sur eux, et ils fuiront devant votre face.
Then they shall take their armour, and shall go into their camp, and raise up the captains of the army of Assur, and shall run to the tent of Holofernes, but shall not find him: then fear shall fall upon them, and they shall flee before your face.
Ainsi vous, et tous ceux qui habitent le territoire d'Israël, vous les poursuivrez et vous les renverserez dans leur fuite.
So ye, and all that inhabit the coast of Israel, shall pursue them, and overthrow them as they go.
Mais avant de faire ces choses, appelez-moi Achior l'Ammonite, afin qu'il voie et reconnaisse celui qui méprisait la maison d'Israël, et qui l'avait envoyé vers nous comme pour le livrer à la mort.
But before ye do these things, call me Achior the Ammonite, that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel, and that sent him to us as it were to his death.
Alors ils appelèrent Achior de la maison d'Ozias ; et quand il fut venu et qu'il vit la tête d'Holopherne dans la main d'un homme dans l'assemblée du peuple, il tomba sur sa face, et son esprit défaillit.
Then they called Achior out of the house of Ozias; and when he was come, and saw the head of Holofernes in a man’s hand in the assembly of the people, he fell down on his face, and his spirit failed.
Mais quand on l'eut ranimé, il tomba aux pieds de Judith, lui rendit hommage et dit : Bénie sois-tu dans toutes les tentes de Juda et dans toutes les nations qui, entendant ton nom, seront dans l'étonnement.
But when they had recovered him, he fell at Judith’s feet, and reverenced her, and said, Blessed art thou in all the tabernacles of Juda, and in all nations, which hearing thy name shall be astonished.
Maintenant donc, raconte-moi toutes les choses que tu as faites en ces jours. Alors Judith lui déclara au milieu du peuple tout ce qu'elle avait fait, depuis le jour où elle était sortie jusqu'à l'heure où elle leur parlait.
Now therefore tell me all the things that thou hast done in these days. Then Judith declared unto him in the midst of the people all that she had done, from the day that she went forth until that hour she spake unto them.
Et quand elle eut cessé de parler, le peuple poussa de grands cris et fit éclater une joie bruyante dans leur ville.
And when she had left off speaking, the people shouted with a loud voice, and made a joyful noise in their city.
Et quand Achior eut vu tout ce que le Dieu d'Israël avait fait, il crut fermement en Dieu, circoncit la chair de son prépuce et fut agrégé à la maison d'Israël jusqu'à ce jour.
And when Achior had seen all that the God of Israel had done, he believed in God greatly, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined unto the house of Israel unto this day.
Et dès que le matin parut, ils suspendirent la tête d'Holopherne à la muraille, et chaque homme prit ses armes, et ils sortirent par bandes vers les défilés de la montagne.
And as soon as the morning arose, they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall, and every man took his weapons, and they went forth by bands unto the straits of the mountain.
Mais quand les Assyriens les virent, ils envoyèrent vers leurs chefs, lesquels allèrent vers leurs capitaines et leurs tribuns, et vers tous leurs commandants.
But when the Assyrians saw them, they sent to their leaders, which came to their captains and tribunes, and to every one of their rulers.
Ils vinrent donc à la tente d'Holopherne et dirent à celui qui avait l'intendance de toutes ses choses : Réveille maintenant notre seigneur ; car ces esclaves ont eu l'audace de descendre contre nous pour combattre, afin d'être entièrement détruits.
So they came to Holofernes’ tent, and said to him that had the charge of all his things, Waken now our lord: for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battle, that they may be utterly destroyed.
Alors Bagoas entra et frappa à la porte de la tente ; car il pensait qu'il dormait avec Judith.
Then went in Bagoas, and knocked at the door of the tent; for he thought that he had slept with Judith.
Mais comme personne ne répondait, il l'ouvrit, entra dans la chambre à coucher et le trouva jeté sur le plancher, mort, et sa tête lui avait été enlevée.
But because none answered, he opened it, and went into the bedchamber, and found him cast upon the floor dead, and his head was taken from him.
C'est pourquoi il cria d'une voix forte, avec des pleurs, des soupirs et un grand cri, et il déchira ses vêtements.
Therefore he cried with a loud voice, with weeping, and sighing, and a mighty cry, and rent his garments.
Après cela, il entra dans la tente où Judith logeait ; et ne l'ayant pas trouvée, il s'élança vers le peuple et cria :
After he went into the tent where Judith lodged: and when he found her not, he leaped out to the people, and cried,
Ces esclaves ont agi traîtreusement ; une seule femme hébreue a couvert de honte la maison du roi Nabuchodonosor ; car voici, Holopherne gît à terre sans tête.
These slaves have dealt treacherously; one woman of the Hebrews hath brought shame upon the house of king Nabuchodonosor: for, behold, Holofernes lieth upon the ground without a head.
Lorsque les chefs de l'armée des Assyriens entendirent ces paroles, ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, et leur âme fut saisie d'un trouble extrême ; et il y eut un grand cri et un bruit immense par tout le camp.
When the captains of the Assyrians’ army heard these words, they rent their coats and their minds were wonderfully troubled, and there was a cry and a very great noise throughout the camp.
Et quand ceux qui étaient dans les tentes l'apprirent, ils furent frappés de stupeur à la vue de ce qui s'était passé.
And when they that were in the tents heard, they were astonished at the thing that was done.
La crainte et le tremblement s'emparèrent d'eux, de sorte qu'aucun homme n'osa plus rester en présence de son prochain, mais s'élançant tous ensemble, ils s'enfuirent par tous les chemins de la plaine et de la montagne.
And fear and trembling fell upon them, so that there was no man that durst abide in the sight of his neighbour, but rushing out all together, they fled into every way of the plain, and of the hill country.
Ceux aussi qui campaient dans les montagnes autour de Béthulie s'enfuirent. Alors les enfants d'Israël, tous ceux d'entre eux qui étaient guerriers, s'élancèrent contre eux.
They also that had camped in the mountains round about Bethulia fled away. Then the children of Israel, every one that was a warrior among them, rushed out upon them.
Alors Ozias envoya à Bétomasthém, à Bébaï, à Chobaï, à Cola et dans toutes les contrées d'Israël, des messagers pour annoncer ce qui s'était passé, afin que tous se jetassent sur leurs ennemis pour les exterminer.
Then sent Ozias to Betomasthem, and to Bebai, and Chobai, and Cola and to all the coasts of Israel, such as should tell the things that were done, and that all should rush forth upon their enemies to destroy them.
Dès que les enfants d'Israël l'eurent appris, ils tombèrent tous d'un commun accord sur eux, et les taillèrent en pièces jusqu'à Chobaï ; de même aussi ceux qui vinrent de Jérusalem et de toute la montagne (car on leur avait appris ce qui s'était passé dans le camp de leurs ennemis), et ceux qui étaient en Galaad et en Galilée les poursuivirent par un grand carnage, jusqu'au-delà de Damas et de son territoire.
Now when the children of Israel heard it, they all fell upon them with one consent, and slew them unto Chobai: likewise also they that came from Jerusalem, and from all the hill country, (for men had told them what things were done in the camp of their enemies) and they that were in Galaad, and in Galilee, chased them with a great slaughter, until they were past Damascus and the borders thereof.
Et le reste des habitants de Béthulie se jeta sur le camp d'Assur, le pilla et s'enrichit considérablement.
And the residue that dwelt at Bethulia, fell upon the camp of Assur, and spoiled them, and were greatly enriched.
Et les enfants d'Israël qui revenaient du carnage s'emparèrent de ce qui restait ; les bourgs et les villes des montagnes et de la plaine eurent aussi un grand butin, car la multitude en était immense.
And the children of Israel that returned from the slaughter had that which remained; and the villages and the cities, that were in the mountains and in the plain, gat many spoils: for the multitude was very great.
Alors le grand prêtre Joacim et les anciens des enfants d'Israël qui habitaient Jérusalem vinrent pour voir les bienfaits que Dieu avait accordés à Israël, et pour voir Judith et la saluer.
Then Joacim the high priest, and the ancients of the children of Israel that dwelt in Jerusalem, came to behold the good things that God had shewed to Israel, and to see Judith, and to salute her.
Et lorsqu'ils furent venus vers elle, ils la bénirent d'un commun accord, et lui dirent : Tu es l'exaltation de Jérusalem, tu es la grande gloire d'Israël, tu es la grande joie de notre nation.
And when they came unto her, they blessed her with one accord, and said unto her, Thou art the exaltation of Jerusalem, thou art the great glory of Israel, thou art the great rejoicing of our nation:
Tu as fait toutes ces choses de ta main ; tu as fait beaucoup de bien à Israël, et Dieu s'en est complu : sois bénie du Seigneur Tout-Puissant à jamais. Et tout le peuple dit : Amen.
Thou hast done all these things by thine hand: thou hast done much good to Israel, and God is pleased therewith: blessed be thou of the Almighty Lord for evermore. And all the people said, So be it.
Et le peuple pilla le camp pendant l'espace de trente jours ; ils donnèrent à Judith la tente d'Holopherne, toute son argenterie, ses lits, ses vases et tous ses meubles ; elle les prit et les chargea sur sa mule, prépara ses chariots et les y déposa.
And the people spoiled the camp the space of thirty days: and they gave unto Judith Holofernes his tent, and all his plate, and beds, and vessels, and all his stuff: and she took it and laid it on her mule; and made ready her carts, and laid them thereon.
Alors toutes les femmes d'Israël accoururent pour la voir, et elles la bénirent et formèrent entre elles des chœurs de danse en son honneur ; elle prit des rameaux à la main et en donna aux femmes qui étaient avec elle.
Then all the women of Israel ran together to see her, and blessed her, and made a dance among them for her: and she took branches in her hand, and gave also to the women that were with her.
Elles mirent une couronne d'olivier sur sa tête et sur celle de sa servante qui l'accompagnait ; et elle marchait devant tout le peuple, menant la danse de toutes les femmes ; et tous les hommes d'Israël suivaient armés, portant des couronnes et chantant des hymnes.
And they put a garland of olive upon her and her maid that was with her, and she went before all the people in the dance, leading all the women: and all the men of Israel followed in their armour with garlands, and with songs in their mouths.
Alors Judith commença ce chant d'actions de grâces dans tout Israël, et tout le peuple répétait après elle ce cantique de louange.
Then Judith began to sing this thanksgiving in all Israel, and all the people sang after her this song of praise.
Et Judith dit : Commencez un chant pour mon Dieu sur les tambourins, chantez au Seigneur sur les cymbales ; entonnez en son honneur un psaume nouveau, exaltez-le et invoquez son nom.
And Judith said, Begin unto my God with timbrels, sing unto my Lord with cymbals: tune unto him a new psalm: exalt him, and call upon his name.
Car le Seigneur est celui qui brise les guerres ; car au milieu des camps, au milieu de son peuple, il m'a délivrée de la main de ceux qui me persécutaient.
For God breaketh the battles: for among the camps in the midst of the people he hath delivered me out of the hands of them that persecuted me.
Assur est venu des montagnes du septentrion, il est venu avec les myriades de son armée ; leur multitude a tari les torrents, et leur cavalerie a couvert les collines.
Assur came out of the mountains from the north, he came with ten thousands of his army, the multitude whereof stopped the torrents, and their horsemen have covered the hills.
Il se vantait de brûler mes frontières, de passer mes jeunes gens au fil de l'épée, d'écraser les enfants à la mamelle contre la terre, de livrer mes petits enfants en proie et mes vierges au pillage.
He bragged that he would burn up my borders, and kill my young men with the sword, and dash the sucking children against the ground, and make mine infants as a prey, and my virgins as a spoil.
Mais le Seigneur Tout-Puissant les a confondus par la main d'une femme.
But the Almighty Lord hath disappointed them by the hand of a woman.
Car leur puissant n'est pas tombé par des jeunes gens, ce ne sont pas les fils des Titans qui l'ont frappé, ni de fiers géants qui l'ont assailli ; mais Judith, fille de Mérari, l'a désarmé par la beauté de son visage.
For the mighty one did not fall by the young men, neither did the sons of the Titans smite him, nor high giants set upon him: but Judith the daughter of Merari weakened him with the beauty of her countenance.
Car elle a quitté ses vêtements de veuve pour le relèvement de ceux qui étaient opprimés en Israël ; elle a oint son visage de parfums, elle a lié ses cheveux d'un bandeau et a pris une robe de lin pour le séduire.
For she put off the garment of her widowhood for the exaltation of those that were oppressed in Israel, and anointed her face with ointment, and bound her hair in a tire, and took a linen garment to deceive him.
Ses sandales ont ravi ses yeux, sa beauté a captivé son âme, et le cimeterre a tranché son cou.
Her sandals ravished his eyes, her beauty took his mind prisoner, and the fauchion passed through his neck.
Les Perses ont tremblé devant son audace, et les Mèdes ont été troublés par sa hardiesse.
The Persians quaked at her boldness, and the Medes were daunted at her hardiness.
Alors mes affligés ont poussé des cris de joie, et mes faibles ont crié à haute voix ; mais les autres furent épouvantés ; ceux-là élevèrent la voix, et ceux-ci furent renversés.
Then my afflicted shouted for joy, and my weak ones cried aloud; but they were astonished: these lifted up their voices, but they were overthrown.
Les fils des jeunes femmes les ont percés, ils les ont blessés comme des enfants de fugitifs ; ils ont péri dans le combat du Seigneur.
The sons of the damsels have pierced them through, and wounded them as fugitives’ children: they perished by the battle of the Lord.
Je chanterai au Seigneur un cantique nouveau : Seigneur, tu es grand et glorieux, admirable de puissance et invincible.
I will sing unto the Lord a new song: O Lord, thou art great and glorious, wonderful in strength, and invincible.
Que toute créature te serve, car tu as parlé et elles ont été faites ; tu as envoyé ton esprit et il les a créées, et nul ne peut résister à ta voix.
Let all creatures serve thee: for thou spakest, and they were made, thou didst send forth thy spirit, and it created them, and there is none that can resist thy voice.
Car les montagnes seront ébranlées sur leurs fondements avec les eaux, les rochers fondront comme la cire devant ta face ; mais tu es miséricordieux envers ceux qui te craignent.
For the mountains shall be moved from their foundations with the waters, the rocks shall melt as wax at thy presence: yet thou art merciful to them that fear thee.
Car tout sacrifice est trop peu pour être un parfum de bonne odeur devant toi, et toute la graisse ne suffit pas pour ton holocauste ; mais celui qui craint le Seigneur est grand en tout temps.
For all sacrifice is too little for a sweet savour unto thee, and all the fat is not sufficient for thy burnt offering: but he that feareth the Lord is great at all times.
Malheur aux nations qui s'élèvent contre ma race ! Le Seigneur Tout-Puissant tirera vengeance d'elles au jour du jugement, en mettant le feu et les vers dans leur chair ; et elles les sentiront et pleureront éternellement.
Woe to the nations that rise up against my kindred! the Lord Almighty will take vengeance of them in the day of judgment, in putting fire and worms in their flesh; and they shall feel them, and weep for ever.
Dès qu'ils furent entrés dans Jérusalem, ils adorèrent le Seigneur ; et aussitôt que le peuple fut purifié, ils offrirent leurs holocaustes, leurs offrandes volontaires et leurs dons.
Now as soon as they entered into Jerusalem, they worshipped the Lord; and as soon as the people were purified, they offered their burnt offerings, and their free offerings, and their gifts.
Judith aussi consacra tous les meubles d'Holopherne que le peuple lui avait donnés, et elle offrit au Seigneur le pavillon qu'elle avait enlevé de sa chambre à coucher.
Judith also dedicated all the stuff of Holofernes, which the people had given her, and gave the canopy, which she had taken out of his bedchamber, for a gift unto the Lord.
Le peuple continua ainsi de se réjouir à Jérusalem devant le sanctuaire pendant l'espace de trois mois, et Judith resta avec eux.
So the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for the space of three months and Judith remained with them.
Après ce temps, chacun s'en retourna dans son héritage, et Judith revint à Béthulie et demeura dans ses possessions ; elle fut, de son temps, honorée dans tout le pays.
After this time every one returned to his own inheritance, and Judith went to Bethulia, and remained in her own possession, and was in her time honourable in all the country.
Beaucoup la désirèrent, mais aucun homme ne l'approcha tous les jours de sa vie, depuis que Manassé, son mari, était mort et avait été réuni à son peuple.
And many desired her, but none knew her all the days of her life, after that Manasses her husband was dead, and was gathered to his people.
Elle crût de plus en plus en honneur, et elle vieillit dans la maison de son mari, atteignant l'âge de cent cinq ans ; elle rendit la liberté à sa servante, et elle mourut à Béthulie ; on l'ensevelit dans la grotte de Manassé, son mari.
But she increased more and more in honour, and waxed old in her husband’s house, being an hundred and five years old, and made her maid free; so she died in Bethulia: and they buried her in the cave of her husband Manasses.
Et la maison d'Israël la pleura pendant sept jours ; avant de mourir, elle distribua ses biens à tous les plus proches parents de Manassé, son mari, et aux plus proches de sa propre parenté.
And the house of Israel lamented her seven days: and before she died, she did distribute her goods to all them that were nearest of kindred to Manasses her husband, and to them that were the nearest of her kindred.
Et il n'y eut plus personne qui jetât l'effroi parmi les enfants d'Israël pendant les jours de Judith, ni longtemps après sa mort.
And there was none that made the children of Israel any more afraid in the days of Judith, nor a long time after her death.
